My brother accidentally installed it on his phone and wants to go back to stock 2.1.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The easiest way is to use Odin to flash it back to stock DI18, but this will return it to a factory setting, as in he will have to redownload his apps and contacts, unless he has them saved to gmail, in which case those will show up as soon as he enters his gmail info into the phone.
The other, more time consuming way is to flash the modem bin only through Odin, and then through ClockworkMod (if it doesnt have it applied already, find the one click root and recovery thread in the Dev section), flash the stock DI18 rom directly over what is there without wiping the data.
For info on how to do either of these, check the wiki (its a sticky up at the top of this section) or do a search... usefull terms are odin, cwm, clockworkmod, etc.
Thank you.ha

Lol how do you accidentally do something when you have to odin to get there? Glad you got it taken care of though.

There is also a zip that is flashable with cwm. Some people have upgraded that way.
ok im about to get my samsung epic and i want to put 2.2 on it but i really don't know what to do. And i don't know how to put a rom or stock on it so can anyone tell me step to step directions on how to put 2.2 on the samsung epic when you just got the phone.
BTW im new to the fourm
Follow this link to the wiki. It has links to other posts that will answer all your questions.

Step one search 1 click root and cwm (clock work mod) recovery. read the instructions to set your phone up and install. You'll be first clicking the soft menu button. That's bottom left under the screen. Click settings-applications-development. Make sure to choose usb debugging AND stay awake for the 1 click! Once you have both of them installed you need to find the dk28 thread. That's 2.2. Read those instructions put phone in dowmnload mode holding the number 1on your actual hardware keyboard.
All the right info is available in the respected threads. Search both of these in the development section. Once you are on xda website and click into the Epic 4g Development forum, use the tool on the top right that's says search this thread. Also pm me if you get stuck on any specific part.
Xtra advice, read and reread all instructions until you are comfortable with the steps. One more topic to search for is "how to return to stock" incase anything goes wrong. The only tricky part is the gps but there are also 3 threads I believe on how to make sure gps works properly. Read those as well. I know you want to click and have 2.2 but it does take a bit of research.

Welcome to XDA. As jprocha101 said, the wiki is your friend. Here's a link to the guides and references section. The comprehensive guide is pretty good.
The steps you'll follow are:
1. Root and install ClockWorkMod recovery (CWM) with 1-click.
2. Flash DK28 (leaked froyo build)
3. Choose a ROM (I like Viper and Bonsai) and flash with CWM.
4. Enjoy your better Epic.
The guide goes into details. It will be very helpful. If that doesn't work, search the Epic forums.
Again, welcome!

As of right now the roms are mostly stock optimized as much as possible (if your using dk28 or Froyo 2.2, the proper name). If you are sticking with 2.1, or DI18, eclair, you can flash a rom to overclock/undervolt which lets your phone run at 1.6g instead of 1.0g processor speed. If your using 2.1 and you use tanims odex script found in the development section, you can theme the phone, re odex it, and add on MobileAP a tether app people tend to favor. Keep searching, you'll learn all the things you can do with your phone.
Getting root is the biggest deal, cause you can run apps on a root level and unlock more features for example, when you back up your phone with any of the backup programs available on the market, if you have root, you can back up more user data as well as just the apps themselves but be careful to only restore data on the same rom you backed it up on or you might run into trouble. Once again, welcome to XDA, glad to have you aboard.

well heres my problem all i want to do is put 2.2 on my device and ya and probably some other themes like the gingerbread but i don't want to put all of the roots and roms on my device cause i don't want to brick it and make it slower. See my point
Bricking your phone is nearly imposible with the Epic and Odin (you know, the Norse god who resurrects fallen warriors to fight another day, get it?!). To get to 2.2 you're going to have to root and install the DK28 rom anyway, and you'll need to root again on 2.2 to get cusom themes, too.
Once you've rooted and installed CWM you're good to go. Everything else can be done from clockworkmod (except going back to stock).
There's really very little danger. All the devs give their disclaimer about bricking phones as a CYA move.
Btw, one of the threads has videos as walkthroughs. Those are very helpful.

k thanks and what thread is that do you know?
Sorry been away, root and recovery are easy click menu-settings-applications-development then check usb debugging, and stay awake. Plug in usb into your pic and run the script. Follow on screen instructions which is choose root hit enter let it do its thing
Phone will reboot, then do recovery same way, nothing to worry about trust me

both DI18 2.1 and DK28 2.2 (froyo) have a tar file called that because they end in .tar.md5 If they end in .md5, rename the file, and delete the .md5 so it ends up being filename.tar. They also have a flashable update zip for each. Its personal opinion and I prefer the update zips. I like to keep my stock rom update zip on my usb card and if anything goes wrong I just flash it right over the problem. A tar file requires odin and I rather use it least as possible only for going back stock.
Download the dk28 update.zip file, the victory .pit file, and the dk28 modem (all available from the wiki); and download odin3 1.6 and I'll get you going with it. It is going to take 3 separate steps after you get past the root and recovery.

You can also just install the dk28.zip file without the need to root or anything else...but as long as your gonna run unofficial updates you may as well root and get all the benefits that come with it

? ? Can you explain that a little better. The dk28 update zip is pre rooted. Also he needs to odin the modem. Needs clockwork to flash the update.zip.

Since my phone was giving me so many problems in clock work recovery I decided to follow the stock eb13 thread so I could start again with a clean slate. This worked fine.
However, now I can not get any of the one click roots to work. Keeps telling me that it can't find my phone. It is in debug mode. I have the samsung drivers. If I didn't I wouldn't have been able to use odin.
Long story short:
I need to get the one click root to recognize the fact that my phone is plugged in.
Did you use the Samsung tool? If so reinstall the drivers for OncClick. I ran into this too and that fixed it.
No, I actually used odin to do it. I still tried what you suggested and sure enough it fixed my problem.
Thank you.
Not a problem man!
Did you get it fixed???
theres your answer

If your not having a problem using odin the easiest method is to grab it all in one install. There is a thread in development section that will flash eb13 deodexed, clockwork, and root all through using odin. I would send a link but I'm not on my comp right now. Just look for the [stock flash] tag

So last night I tried running the one click root with CWM 3, and it ran, but got stuck installing the recovery image, so I disconnected, rebooted, and ran again. Now it won't run cuz Asphalt and Free HD game demos are gone. What can I do? I really don't want to Odin just to get those two apks back
Odin a prerooted tar.. or manually install the recovery because if you made it that far ur phone should be rooted... is superuser in the app drawer now??

It was, but then I ran the one click again and it froze up my whole phone, it wouldn't even start. Somehow, messing around with Odin unlocked it, but superuser was gone, but my phone was back to normal (still missing those two apps)

There is not enough room for one click to run and copy so it deletes those 2 apps to make room. When you are rooted move a bunch of stuff to SD card and you can download and install them again.

Make sure Superuser is not still on your phone. Go into manage applications>all and see. If it is there, clear data in it. Then try one-click again.

That's what I do.
I've never gotten the one click script to work. I assume it's because I'm dumb or my hardware isn't compatible or something. It always says "phone not connected" even though it is connected and I have the proper drivers installed.
pre-rooted tars in odin are just so much easier.
If you are getting "phone not recognized" error it is 99% of time your cable you are using. The factory cable is junk!

Blackberry cable FTW! I agree. I always use my blackberry cable and never have problems.
Anyone have any explanation as to why my phone locked up while running the one click and then fixed by using Odin, abiet with everything still intact? In scared I messed up something behind the scenes. And where and how do I get a flashable tar to root my phone with?

Yeah, that shouldn't of happened unless flashed only a modem instead of a full tar. They should be greater than 150MB. Here is the link for an EB13 prerooted tar set, also in development there are a bunch of new EC05 files.

A little more information please...
Did you attempt the manual update zip via flashing it in CWM?
Did you flash a custom GB based ROM?
Thanks.
I am ...was running a rooted froyo stock rom that came with the phone.

If you followed the instructions right, you've already hosed what was previously your "stock" rom.
First, did you make a backup?
If so, wipe and restore.
If now, flash a new rom.
Did you already update the modem?
If its still on EC05, flash an EC05 rom.

MY PROBLEM IS THat i cant even get it to show up on odin!
You don't Odin to flash a rom, so that's beside the point right now.
Don't get flustered here, I am trying to help.

Dude, just restore your nand backup.
If you want to go back to stock and become unrooted, go to youtube and search samsung epic return to stock. Watch qbkings video. You will need the ec05.tar file, samsung drivers for your pc, and one additional file that should come with odin, and a valium. There are turtorials everywhere around here, but for step by step "easy" instructions, use qbkings video.

Two options if odin doesn't see your phone. Try a different cable I bought mine at staples 15 dollars for a better 6 foot cable. Second option is remove the battery hold down 1 and power insert battery. That should get you back in. Then odin to stock ec05. Find a rom of your choice like randomrom thunderhawk. After it installs use the ec05 to ei22 modem flash. That is the method that I upgraded worked like a champ.
If odin doesn't see your phone, try disabling your antivirus and firewall that was causing me problems a while back with Norton I think.
