I recently bought a Desire. The home button rarely works at all, although everything else seems OK. Have tried uninstalling Market apps, Factory reset, removing SD card. Phone is not rooted, was O2 with HTC Sense (now unlocked). This is my first Android phone; I would be grateful for any help. Any ideas??
Probably a hardware fault if factory reset didn't fix it
If its under warranty HTC or your provider will (should) fix it at no charge as long as there's no visible damage (been dropped or water damage).
If its not under warranty I would root it and get Button Savior from the android market, it will give you on-screen hardware keys. Or you could remap the home key to the search key, also requires root.

Thanks, that gives me some options

I have had an HTC Desire via T-Mobile UK for a couple of months. It runs Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense interface. I have made no modifications to the phone. This evening the phone would not turn off so I removed the battery. Then it would not boot.
When I press the power button, the screen comes on, the phone vibrates (once) and I get the red ring -- and that's it. It sits with a blank screen apart from the red ring/disc.
I have tried removing the battery (that's the only way to switch it off), removing memory card and SIM. Still nothing. Then I tried a factory reset by clearing the memory, which appeared to work -- but no improvement. It remains stuck at the red disc.
Is my phone goosed? Is this a hardware fault?
The only thing I did before this problem was to try to install Swype using a APK file via my memory card and installing a third party app installer. The app installer did not find the APK file on my memory card so I couldn't install Swype - but I noticed a lot of forced closes before I tried to switch off. I presumed switching off the phone would resolve this. Then my problems began...
I don't think it's f***ed... try a hard reset, if that doesn't work flash an original HTC rom again.

does the triangle look like this... /!\ if so press volume up and tap the power button.
hope this helps! good luck!
The device has been factory reset. Several times. No difference. Maybe a new ROM will cure it. I'm surprised that a ROM could be so easily corrupted. This "red ring of death" on an HTC Desire might become more common in the months ahead.
OK. I promised to report back when the problem was resolved.
I got the phone back yesterday, one month and three days after I sent it for repair. The company I sent it to (the one I had the warranty with) could not fix it so sent it to HTC.
The device has a new IMEI, which tells me that the motherboard was replaced. It was, therefore, a major hardware fault and not an OS/software fault.
I'm not sure if it was a coincidence that I was messing around with non-standard software (using a non-Market source) or whether this goosed my mobo but my mobo was most certainly goosed.
So, for posterity, the red ring of death on an HTC Desire (and possibly some other handsets) is, indeed, a ring of death. The phone is f*cked.
The red ring you talk about seems to be some kind of error screen on T-mobile handsets. As far as I know, a non T-mobile handset has a black screen with 4 triangles, 1 in each corner.
Glad you got it sorted though

Hi Every one
IS there anybody who can guide me on my HTC Dz for following issue.
I am facing this problem from 2 days back.
My phone is HTC desire z singapore based model running on 2.2.1 update.
Never rooted ,working on stock rom. Using since last december 2010.
I love it .
But fom past few days its touchscreen sceen hanging after wake up each time.
even touch screen buttons i.e. home , back menu , etc. wont work in that situation.
Each time I have to press power butto to wake him up and slide unlock slider.
But whatever that time I was running on screen that keep running, i just cant interact with it.
When ever I connect USB cable for any purpose , it even not respond to any touch, just keep charging.
Before this issue I was only browsing inbuild You Tube app on phone and nothing download from outside app market.
To solve by my side , I try with Complete power off and start up, remove battery and card for few second and also with factory reset. But still there is problem.
I am waiting for update from htc for 2.3 so may be it can solve issue..if this is related with ROM.
Can anyone give me suggestion on this ?
Thanks in advance.
Did u also try to do a full factory reset?
First a fall , thanks for your feedback
Yes I did
I already try with factory reset + battery removal for few second + sd card removal + sim card removal + restarts and power offs for many times
But still the same situation
Hi all
My lock screen is going crazy. Every time I lock the phone, and the screen goes off, it immediately comes back on again - just like I've pressed the power button. It's very odd. The phone actually reboots if I press the power button a couple of times.
Any suggestions? I've even reinstalled the rom bit it's still happening.
I've checked the timeout and it's set to 30 seconds. Also there are no apps running and no animated wallpaper. There is no issue with the power button - the phone works fine apart from this.
I'm running CM7 on my HTC Desire. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jonny

Yes still happens. ALso installed a new rom from scratch. Still happens!
Very bizarre. Incidentally my down-volume button on the rocker no longer works. And reboots are more frequent, mostly when the phone has been locked for a few seconds and I press the power button...
I've screwed about with it a lot over the year so I think I'd like to unroot and install stock HTC rom again. I'd like to give it to my Dad when I get my galaxy nexus anyway.
Are there any instructions/steps available detailing how to unroot and put back to the factory rom?
Thanks again for all your help.
Jonny
I dont think that will fix it. Sounds like a hardware issue on the motherboard. Perhaps water damage...
But yes, search for RUU to return to stock. You can use the GB 2.3.3 one from HTCDev.com
Having read your first post I thought it was the accelometer that might be faulty, but now I'm not sure. As the previous user said it may be water damage.
To remove root, just install the latest official RUU. Normally found in the Android Dev Forums
I was snowboarding this weekend, and when I took a break I realized my power button broke (it wouldn't lock the screen). When I took the phone out of my pocket, it was all wet, but still worked perfectly fine.
However, it wasn't completely broken. If I pulled the battery, the phone would automatically turn on.
Any ideas?
Phone: Desire Z
ROM: RCMix3d v4 Runny
edit: phone automatically turns on if i put the battery in. acts as if the power button is permanently pressed down?
Factory reset, if that doesnt work then try reflashing rom, if that dont work i would say your power switch is broken. Good luck!

Will a factory reset affect my phone being unlocked or rooted?
No it wont, it delets all installed apps and you have to resync your google account... Maybe its a better idea to reflash the rom using superwipe inbetween but if its a hardware problem it wont help at all
have a look (thats what some other xda user did to clean his phone):

okay, a friend of mine had dz out in the woods while he was hunting and it was raining and got wet. Power button was not working, according to him. He was going to get it repaired, but before that, i had to copy his contacts to old nokia communicator, well, i noticed the power button was actually working on his DZ.
I would say the button got wet, water is short circuiting it so its like its fully pressed all the time, so try dry it/wait, and it could work soon.

thanks, this is kind of what i think is happening
Since a while my desire is having back button problems. Since I have tried different roms after the problem occurred and the problem persisted with each of those roms, I believe this is a hardware issue. Now, I could of course have my phone serviced to resolve the problem. But the downside would be that I don't know if this still falls under warranty (the device is over a year old) and that I would lose my phone for a period. Since my contract ends in October and I was planning on purchasing another phone by then anyway, I thought maybe there are some options to help me stick out the time. For example, I was wondering if it's possible to modify it such that pressing the search button also triggers a back press. Since I _never_ user the search button, I would not lose functionality but would gain a bigger, more usable back button.
So, my question is: Is it possible to modify the search button to act as a back button also, in result creating one big back button where pressing anywhere would suffice?
Thanks in advance for your help!
FYI: My desire is rooted and runs Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 at the moment.
have look here /system/usr/keylayout/bravo-keypad.kl
and here
remap keys as you require
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip! Couldn't get it working at first with manually editing the keymap, but after some searching I found "ButtonRemaper" with which I could get it working.
hmm this only works within a rom right? since my volume up button is useless so to access hboot often requires several tries...
You right just in the Rom
