Basically just wondering if the Ad Free ( app where it kills application ads ) bogs down the phone at all?
Honestly I run this app and haven't really noticed any bogging down. If it slows it down at all it is not noticeable by me. It works kind of like adblock for Firefox or Chrome which don't really slow down your browser. Maybe in devices with less powerful hardware you would notice a difference, but so far on my EVO I see no difference at all when apps start up because of Ad Free.
ad-free and 4g
I have noticed that adfree tends to freeze up some web pages when on 4g. When I revert to the original host file the sites load fine. I don't have any problems when on 3g thought. Hope this helps.

Alright cool. I was just unsure how it accomplished blocking the ads, and thought that it could be bogging the evo down.
It works by editing the host file so known ad serving URL's are redirect to 127.0.0.1
It shouldn't hurt anything.
I now Vaelek removed it from VaelPak saying it wasn't playing nice with an increasing number of things. Can't remember details though.

I heard somewhere that Ad-Free Android slows your phone down. I never installed it, but im pretty sure I have it. I have no ads on any apps and my browser is kind of slow. I'm running CM7 nightly #14. Does anyone know if this comes pre-installed on CM7?

I'm not sure if it's already cooked into CM7 or not, but I will say that I don't think it slows the phone down. However, if the hosts files get out of date, it will indeed cause your browser speeds to dwindle greatly. Usually updating the hosts files correct that problem.

i've never noticed a problem with browser speeds... Love not having adds in some of the apps though!
I have never noticed any problems with it either.
Depending on how your hosts file is set up, you may notice a slowdown before a timeout occurs.
Consider this, the web page in question calls certain ads. Your hosts file points to some address that instead of just saying file does not exist, it sits there until a time out occurs. In this sense, slowdowns can occur. I don't recall of having localhost/127.0.0.1 as the IP in the hosts results in a simple file not found, or this stalling issue.
Hi, I got my evo about a week ago and I'm just getting into the custom ROMs. I rooted and flashed Myns 2.2 RLS5 as my first new ROM but I have a few questions, can anyone help me?
1. In the Spare Parts app, i see there are many addons like Trackball Alert, etc. I checked all the ckeckboxes to install but after they installed, I can't find them anywhere on the phone. Where are these addons stored?
2. I noticed there is a "Warm Themed Market" and I like it but it seems that whenever I install/update an app from AppBrain, the Market downloads some sort of update which reverts Myn's Market theme and styling back to the ugly green. Is this avoidable?
3. Also it seems that there is already certain updated apps on the ROM such as Adobe Reader 10.0.1, Adobe Flash 10.1.106.16, etc. Is there any reason for this or will I want to update to the latest versions of there because I'm seeing update notifications in AppBrain when I sync.
4. I love the ROM but it just seems like the 3G is a bit slower than it was on my stock EVO. I went ahead and flashed the update-Warm-TwoPointTwo-RLS5-Hosts-Fix.zip for the Browser slowness fix. I also updated my profile and PRL. Now I'm getting an average of 600kb/s DL speed on 3G (I didn't get the speed stats stock but they definately seemed faster). Is this normal or is there something I can do about the speed. Not a dealbreaker just a little annoying.
Thanks!

1) I'm not sure, I always just assumed those other settings were for different types of phones, and that they didn't apply to the Evo
2) You can indeed stop the Market from updating itself. Very annoying when that happens. Use root explorer or another root level file explorer and navigate to /system/app. Find "MarketUpdater.apk". (make sure the system is mounted r/w) Rename to "MarketUpdater.bak", changing the file extension will disable the app. That will stop your market from updating itself. Next, go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications> select 'all'tab. Scroll down and find Market and select it. Click uninstall updates. Thats it
EDIT: You can also use Titanium Backup Pro to 'freeze' the MarketUpdater.apk. That will also have the same effect.
3) I'm not sure about all of the apps, but if you update Flash, hulu won't work. If you don't use hulu, I don't believe there's any reason not to update. Some of the other apps, such as Gmail are themed. If you update it or reinstall it from the Market, you'll lose the theming of that app.
4) I never really attributed slow 3g speeds to any specific ROM, as Sprin't 3g speeds have been sub par lately, and speeds seem to vary greatly. The browser fix that you mentioned worked for me as far as the slowness in the browser. There's also another fix for slow 3g speeds, which I also did try, but personally didn't notice any difference. However, many people claim this method to work great, so it's worth a try. Find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922978 Also, for me, the host update fix for the slow browser works fine when I'm on the 3g, but while on 4g the browser still hangs. I could only fix that by removing all hosts files, and thus having ads again. I'd rather have ads than a slow browser.
Hope that clears stuff up a bit for ya.

I'm using xScope and am not sure if ad blocking exists. Are there any browsers that allow you to block ads? It seems like the ads are really slowing me down.

You can use the Adblock plus extension for Firefox.
AdFree works for me, and works for in-app ads as well (banners).
Thanks, I'll give them a try.
I see AdFree is for rooted users only so I guess I'll figure out how to root first. Thanks again.
I used to use Adfree on my Nexus One and loved it. Have not rooted my Galaxy yet or I would be running it.
Is there anyway to block ads without rooting the pixel xl?
Download Adguard, it's a VPN that blocks ads through chrome. But using it drains battery quicker so also install macrodroid from the play store and there's a macro that only enables it when you open chrome

ive actually been using adguard with my current 6p which is rooted, honestly i hate it always had internet issues. Ad Away seems to be very good but of course you need root for it
If you're asking about a solution for the browser then use Firefox and install the Adblock Plus addon. If you're talking about the whole system, such as in apps or games, you will need root for that.

I've been using Adguard for ages and it works just fine, even better than Adaway. If some apps have issues, you can exclude them from Adguard. It usually happens because Adguard has a more extensive list of hosts to block compared to the default Adaway list.
Also, battery life isn't really affected. It's a local VPN. It seems like it uses a lot of battery because Android will attribute data consumption to it since every app is routed through Adguard.

I recommend netguard. Allows control over data for all apps (ability to fully shut data, wifi or both for individual apps. (Like ios)
Blocks Ads well, creates a local fake VPN that doesn't extract your data or slow your connection and is stable
I use Opera Browser as it has a built in ad blocker and doesnt require dealing with a standalone ad blocker. I have been using this on my N5 and will likely continue on my Pixel XL when it arrives. I use Chrome for browsing sites I know arent laden with ads and use Opera for sites that I am not sure of as it makes browsing those sites easier, quicker and safer. For example if I open an article someone posted to Facebook and am interested in the content but do not know the site itself ill use Opera, but if its a site I frequent and know its not bogged down with ads I use Chrome.
As others have pointed out this only really applies to web browsing. For app based ad's it requires rooting.
EDIT: I just checked in chrome and adblocking is working fine. Is there a way to fix this in Samsung browser without? Even with the Adguard extension and antitracking features, it still fails to block 90% of tracking stuff and ads based on a couple AdBlock tests I use. All of it works perfectly in chrome, without even the need for any other software like Adguard. I thought AdAway worked on a systemwide level so apps can't forcefully show ads because the connection is literally blocked...?
It blocks some ads, but fails to block way more. As soon as I use the Adguard extension for Samsung browser (I use Samsung browser, prefer it over chrome for a ton of reasons) then all the ads get blocked (but almost no tracking stuff, despite Samsung browser supposedly having antitracking built in).
I've tried adding a few of my favorite lists to AdAway from ublock origin and blokada, and again, they do block a few things but nowhere remotely near what they should be. Something is fundamentally not working.
What is going on? AdAway has generally worked for mw on other phones.
I'm unrooted and did use ad block fast and that let some ads through especially on xda then I used abp and that blocks everything even add on xda I'm using the Samsung browser as well

I realize there are VPN options and Samsung browser extensions, but I'm referring to AdAway, the root ad blocking solution, which is superior to all of those for a number of reasons.
True I knew you ment root version but thought I'd comment sorry it not much help

You got it. Adaway uses an antiquated system as NEW ad's utilize some new crazy backends/whatnot that Adguard updates daily. Forgive me for trying to put my two cents in.
But it seems like your expectations are too high and you're disappointing yourself. To say it worked fine for Other phones, which I am not denying it didn't as I used to use adaway back in the day too, doesn't mean that it SHOULD work on newer phones. it has just become too much of a hassle to be consistent IMO.
BUT. I am out. Goodluck!

That's not the issue. There is not a better adblocker than root-based adblockers, and there is not a better root-based adblocker than AdAway.
It works fine in chrome, and in Samsung browser beta, and in all apps system-wide with none of the issues of non-root VPN-based adblockers.
My issue is how to fix it not working on Samsung browser.
I should have been more clear about that in the OP. There is nothing broken in AdAway—the issue is in Samsung browser specifically (and only the stable channel build, as this issue isn't even present on th beta builds), and so I'm seeking info and solutions regarding this.
Just use NextDNS at router level instead of fiddling with this garbage.
And never use my mobile phone with cellular data or outside of my home? Speaking of garbage....

NextDNS at home. Works great. As for mobile data, you could always switch to another browser, preferably Brave Browser.

Actually NextDNS works *everywhere* if implemented correctly.
Adblocking in AdAway, Adfree, et-al is easily bypassed especially in apps.
The irony in (garbage) is the Samsung browser... ;-)

You said it before I did.
I'm not sure what could be causing such a problem aside from the Samsung Browser ignoring the normal hosts file location, thus leading to the ads not being rerouted/blocked.
Only other thing that I can think of that might cause this issue is not having the systemless hosts module installed in Magisk, however, AdAway wouldn't work on Chrome either if this was the case...
The samsung browser might have a data saver or dns over https setting (or maybe a load pages faster type option) . If so those features bypass hosts file. Really this is better served in the adaway thread suggested to you earlier, your issue is not device specific (adaway works fine on my p6p and firefox browser) . I say post there (or even better on samsung browser's forum if such exists).
