I tried searching but do not understand the method to fixing this.
I can go into BOOTLOADER and FASTBOOT.
How do I recover my phone when in those two. I tried clicking on RECOVERY but it goes to the splash screen again and gets stuck.
Currently using CM6
Does anyone know? I really need my phone for work.
My post on AndroidForums:
I have a rooted phone.
It was acting weird for the first time today. Whenever I pressed a button it would open up some weird windows I've never seen before. Like a weird looking calendar. So I restarted it and now it won't start up.
I did text someone with wet fingers and some small bits of water got on the keyboard.

Do you still have ESPRIMG.zip from when you rooted? Try putting that on the root of your sd card and going into the bootloader. It may or may not fix your problem though, heard mixed stories.

I downloaded the one from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Espresso
then I went into bootloader and ran update.zip (also from there).
Restarted the phone and now it's still stuck on the splash screen.
What has happened?

Okay this thread seems to have a solution.
However I find it hard to follow. WTF is a flash recovery? Someone walk me through it please!
When I open up ESPRING.zip,
there's a recovery.img. Is that my problem? Do I need a different recovery.img?

You're going about this all wrong. Okay, let me try to explain. I think you're mixing up recovery and bootloader. You enter the bootloader by holdijg volume down while holding the power button on boot. It should scan for ESPRIMG.zip, and if it finds it, it will flash it from the sd card. Recovery is the place where you flash roms. If you're flashing clockwork recovery, you flash update.zip from recovery, and you get to recovery from the bootloader. But you can't get to recovery, because obviously somethings wrong with recovery. So what I'm saying is put ESPRIMG.zip on the root of your sd card, not in any folders or anything, and then go into the bootloader by holding volume down and power. It should automatically scan for and install the zip. Report back your results
By the way, its ESPRIMG.zip not ESPRING.zip. M, not N.

What happens if you don't try to get to recovery? Try doing just doing a normal boot, see if it works. It may have to do a normal reboot to fully install everything. You might even try letting it reinstall esprimg again and then selecting yes when it prompts to reboot.

Yeah I tried that too.
I guess my phone is bricked, right?
There are bricked phones for sale on eBay for $60+
Someone must know how to fix these.
Oh well, I just hope I can get $60+ for it so I can reimburse what I spent for a new phone.

Yeah the reason bricked phones go for that price is because the digitizer, LCD, keyboard, it all still works. It's just the mainboard that's toast.
Yeah, sorry man, I'm out of ideas. I mean your phone can't be TOTALLY bricked, it can boot into the bootloader, there's got to be some way to fix it. I just don't know how you would do that. You know what, actually, I have an idea.
Use 7zip or winrar to extract recovery.img from ESPRIMG.zip and go into fastboot and fastboot flash recovery.img. Here's a guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Fastboot
Scroll down to the guide for flashing a custom recovery. This MAY not work because you are s-on still I'm assuming, but we do have an engineering image I believe, so it MIGHT work. Worth a shot at least. You could then you might be able to boot into recovery and flash clockwork and then be able to get your phone working again. You could also try fastboot flashing other partitions in the ESPRIMG.zip but start with recovery.
Try booting the phone with no SD card in it. Mine usually loops on the splash screen if I have it in. Probably won't be your issue, but worth a shot.

Hi all- I just replaced my phone with Asurion because the screen is dead. I have it rooted s-off with Virtuous 3.2 ROM and stock kernel (my sig is not up to date). I want to reset it before I return it. My problem is I cannot do it because I have no screen. I think I pushed it to S-Off in recover when I still could see a little of it using my good phone as a good guide. Not sure it worked though and don't know how to verify.
Is there a way for me to do this with my PC using ADB? I will need detailed instructions because I am not familiar with ADB or the syntax.
Thanks..........mm
How about putting the stock 2.2 PB31IMG, on your sd card, booting into fastboot. All you should have to do is wait a minute out two to let it load the file then just press volume up to have it start updating. After it's done you will have a stock unrooted 2.2.

Wouldn't I need to navigate the screen to get into fastboot and load the update.zip?
I also thought that would not change the s-off. I am not too concerned about that though because this was not a warranty replacement. Mostly want to wipe the phone.
Thanks

If you can, take the SD card out and use a micro SD adapter to put the image on the card, then boot into HBOOT. It will automatically find the image and ask you if you want to update. Select yes and you should be back to stock with S-ON.
ETA:
Oh... wait, you don't have a screen at all, even in HBOOT or recovery?

Yup, no screen even in hboot. However if it loads the update.zip automatically (I don't recall this. As I recall you have to enter recovery from hboot, choose install update.zip, and then confirm.) Then all I would need is to know a couple key presses.
Best would be something in ADB on the PC so I see and confirm what happens.
Thanks

Connect the dead screen Inc to your computer and boot into recovery (hopefully you remember how to do it in the blind or you have another phone to look at what you have to press).
Google the adb commands, navigate to the phone memory and zero format the crap out of it
I went through the same thing, just an idea that could help you out.
Get yourself a giant magnet and rub it all over the phone. Stick it to the battery while it's in too, so everything gets a some magnetic wipe love.
I'm a romwhore, and I'm damn proud of it.
Lol magnets.
Just shake the phone vigorously to scramble your phone's data, render it useless.
Try one fo these:

Part 2: 2.2 stock using OTA RUU
1. Make sure you're rooted with clockworkmod recovery.
1A. If you're s-off, download http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/sto...orever-son.zip
(NOTE: the unrevoked s-on tool does *not* support the 2.15.00.09.01 radio. If you're running that radio, download this, and flash that PB31IMG.zip in HBOOT before continuing.)
1B. Push that to your SDCard and flash it via clockworkmod recovery.
2. Download this zip file: http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/sto....605.1_RUU.zip
3. Push PB31IMG-3.21.605.1_RUU.zip to your SDCard, renaming it to "PB31IMG.zip" (no quotes)(delete any other PB31IMG.zip you might have on there before pushing).
4. Boot into HBOOT, and it should recognize the PB31IMG.zip. Start the update and go get a drink (it might reboot once or twice, don't worry about it).
5. When that's done, reboot and you're at 2.2 stock!
That's it! These steps should bring you back to either 2.1 stock or 2.2 stock for a send-in!

sorry I don't have the exact key presses...
Here are the button presses you need for the PB31IMG flash way.
From phone being off
1. Hold vol - and power button
2. Wait about 2 minutes and let it load the PB31IMG file
3. Press vol + after 2 mintues
4. It should reboot kind of quickly
5. After about another 3-4 minutes (after it vibrates letting you know it rebooted) press vol + again.
6. Let it run through the rest and it should reboot again and that should bring it back to the regular stock setup screen that would come up if you just bought the phone.
These are as accurate as I can remember.

Push the update image to the sd card manually (take it out and use a micro sd adapter), boot up to hboot, wait about one minute, push the volume up key (that says yes you want it to find and update the inage) and it should start. Wait a good 15 minutes and press the volume up key to reboot.

I can actually see CWM for a second, then i get the errors. Is there a bootable CWM, like the NookColor?

Yea, I put it onto the root, applied the PB31IMG and rebooted. Same fcking problem. WTF?!?!
DroidHam,
try pulling the battery, wait around 10 minutes, put the battery in and boot the phone. Yes, it is very important to wait for that long.
Post your results if it booted or not, i had the same issue.
Also let me know if this is a refurbished phone.
ya its a refurb...
I downloaded this:
build-3.26.605.1-release-152016-baseband-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG
Renamed it and it flashed. Then when I rebooted, it doesn't show me CWM anymore, just the HTC screen, a "popping, kind of electric noise", and then 5 vibrations and blank screen, with green blinking LED.
I downloaded the restore above, and renamed it. It doesn't allow me to flash it. It scans it, but never gives me the option to press up to flash.
Keep in mind, S-ON is now set, whereas it was S-Off before.
Previously I was seeing CWM for a split second then it would crash. I dont see CWM anymore but its still crashing at the same point.
If I copied a nandroid backup onto a different phone, it cant be COMPLETELY ****ed right? Just needs to be rebuilt somehow?
So when I put the battery back in in 10 minutes, should I reflash that RUU I mentioned above, or what?

How do I root if i can't get past hboot??!
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
I attempted to root a new Incredible for a friend and had the same thing happen a few days ago. I was able to create a nandroid backup via CWM recovery, and then flashed CM 6.1. CM then bootlooped when trying to boot for the first time. After this point I was unable to get into recovery. The screen would just go blank and would vibrate multiple times. At one point I did manage to succesfully get into CWM recovery without the screen going blank, but then recovery would not recognize the SD card. I restarted and was never able to get back into recovery.
I then attempted to flash a PB31IMG.ZIP from HBOOT that was supposed to restore it to factory state. At this point the phone when blank in the middle of flashing and would not do anything other than vibrate when I would attempt to power it on.
I told them the phone just inexplicably died and they exchanged it at the Verizon store. Everything went perfect with the replacement phone. I figured what happened was a one time thing, but after reading this I would definately be hesitant to root anyone elses Incredible.
Do all phones have hboot?? I don't wanna get screwed. But this was sent was Asurion.... i really need to fix this. There must be a way please!!!

Just got off work... do the battery pull, wait 10 min, then the start phone see what happens.
I'm not sure at what point you are with the RUU image at this point so take out your sd card just to be safe.
You are getting into the Qualcomm diagnostic mode, which is basically 5 buzzes and then the green light keeps flashing green correct?
I will be on and off for the next few hours to see your results.

Can you Boot into Recovery? (Hold Power+Volume Down when phone is off)
Did you create a Nandroid backup?
yes i did trying it now thank you for the help
after i boot into recovery what is next
go down to where it says recovery using the down volume button and click on with the the power button. Hopefully this will take you into recovery mode. If it does take you into recovery mode go down to where it says wipe cache partition and click on it and select wipe. Then go to where it says advanced and click on it. Then click on dalvik cache and click on the then select wipe. If you can do this they you can try to reboot your phone. If not. Let me know.
If you didn't do a backup and you can get into recovery you can do a data factory reset. Its on the green recovery menu.
If you cant get into any of that and you get stuck on a red triangle try holding the power button and the volume up and you should see a menu with a factory reset. click on that and it should wipe your phone.
i tried the first step and it did not take me to recovery mode and of course i did not do a back up cus im a dumb ass. I did manage to get to the screen with the red triangle and did a factory rest. ok another stupid question do i reboot the system or select apply sdcard update zip.
if you did a factory data reset just reboot. Hopefully this will get you back.
It might take a few extra minutes to start up so give it a few extra minutes.
on the white htc evo screen
has it been more that 5 minutes.
still on the evo screen sorry about the delay was talking to my wife, she doesnt know i screwed up my phone had to keep her occupied
Ok give me a minute. Were having storms here so my internet is slow. First you will need a SD card for your phone. Clean it out except for one file you will need to download.
You need to download pc36ing. Zip for 3. 70. 651. 1 just search the form and you can get it for free.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
got the card and the file extracting it to the new sd card as i type this
ok dont extract the file. Just put the whole zip file on the sd card. Once you do this turn off the phone. Pull the battery if you have to. Then start the phone by holding the power button down and the down volume button. This should that us to the boot loader. One click down you should see the HBOOT usb at the bottom. Click down to go there. Once there click the power button then select fastboot, then bootloader. If everything went well you should be ask to flash something. Then select your file on the sd card.
i see what happened. this is why i dont use auto scripts. if one command fails, there is no possible way to find out which. just unroot using an ruu or a pc36img.zip and then do zikronix's there will be root tutorial. i'll link it in my sig soon.
doesnt appear to be reading the file says no image. to be honest not sure if i am doing this right. did you want me to use two different sd cards.
make sure it's named pc36img.zip exactly. and is on the root of ur sdcard (not in any folders). i have the method linked in my sig now btw.

try to follow the above link. This might be a little easier. Don't worry your phone can see be saved. If all else fails your phone is not rooted so you can take it to Sprint and tell them that your phone is jacked and you need a warranty replacement. Last resort.
Sounds like there weren't any ideas in Q&A for this one, and I haven't seen much in terms of not being able to access recovery, so here goes...
I was happily using CM7, and while reading through a Diablo III news page (hopefully it comes out soon ), my phone rebooted into a boot loop. Weird, but I figured at worst I would wipe data and reinstall a ROM. Unfortunately, I can't get into recovery any longer.
If I boot the phone normally, I see the white HTC splash screen for a few seconds, then it reboots. I can use HBOOT fine, but as soon as I try to reboot normally / boot into recovery / boot into Restore Factory Defaults, my phone will reset. Let me clarify...
Pull and replace battery
Boot into HBOOT (volume down + power)
Select Recovery
Phone reboots and reaches CWM Recovery 3 for about 1/2 second, not long enough for me to click anything
Phone reboots into boot loop
I've used HBOOT to flash to CWM Recovery 3.0.0.8, downgraded to the stock radio, run the 2.2 RUU. I'm still running up against the same boot loop problem.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a hardware problem, but I'm anxious to hear if anyone has ideas to try first. Additionally, is there any way to restore to S-ON through HBOOT in case I need to bring this into a Verizon store? I have fastboot.exe that can recognize the device over USB while the device is in HBOOT, maybe this will help?
Thanks!
Current state: Ran 2.2 RUU, S-OFF, HBOOT-0.92.0000, AMOLED, 2.15.00.07.28 radio
Thanks again.
Had this exact issue while running cm7. First couple of from when it was crackflashers. I couldn't find anything to help or fix it. I got a new dinc because I can't afford to be without for long.

Doesn't sound like there are even any suggestions using fastboot, lol. [crickets chirping]

Yeah take out battery, then pull out sd card put it into a adapter and insert it to ur pc. Then find the file that was shipped specifically for ur device it looks something like this PC130mg.zip or some crap like that anyways put that on the root of your sd card. load ur card back to your phone now into hboot(volume down plus power) mode. Your phone will auto detect that file and start to ask if u want to install update say yes boom it will flash back to stock.....however my only concern would be if u need to turn s-ON before u do this.
I did this for a evo 4g and it worked but I turned s-ON first as it was in the instructions I was following. I think maybe the update file checks to see if ur S-off or on. But don't quote me on that.

Yeah, I agree with popasmurf. Put the PB31IMG.zip on your sdcard. Then let hboot discover and update it. It'll be back to stock and youll have to reroot but better than a paperweight.

Now his phone reboots and is on stock and looses his root, now he can root it again and then turn the S-on by the single file flash from recovery mode, and then use the update file again to flash the phone back to normal stock without root ( if he was taking it back) so whenever u want to manipulate the S security u must be rooted correct?

You are correct.

Thanks for the replies.
I tried this method to flash back to the stock 2.2 image before I started this thread. That's what I meant by "I've used HBOOT to ... run the 2.2 RUU." The stock image seemed to install properly in HBOOT. I have evidence that it successfully went back to stock, since I get the original ! triangle graphic instead of CWM when I try to enter recovery from HBOOT. However, I only see the graphic pop up for a brief second before it reboots again. Trying to boot into recovery or the ROM itself still result in a reboot.
I cannot achieve S-ON without having access to recovery, at least there's no way that I've found to do it through HBOOT.
Any other thoughts? I think it's a hardware problem. It appears the phone is back to stock (except it's still S-OFF), but everything outside of HBOOT causes a boot loop. I stopped in at Verizon this afternoon and they'll be sending a new phone to arrive by Tuesday. At this point, it'd be nice to try all avenues of repair for the future benefit of others that run into this problem.
Probably bad memory chips on the phone. Since it happened all of a sudden during normal use it usually indicates hardware failure.
That is pretty much what I determined. Bad hardware. Sorry for your trouble but is nice to know I'm not the only person to ever have this. Also nice to know I didn't miss something that could've brought it back to life.
I filed an insurance claim. Figured since I have had it for years and never used it I'd take advantage.

You can boot your phone like regular right? Just let it launch up or do you get loops?
Nevermind i see what ur saying. when i was flashing incorrect kernals i would get the same behavior from my phone. So i suggest you take phazeones link and try that file.Because u might have the incorrect file. There might be more than meets the eye make sure u got the right file.
When i searched for my zip file for my evo there was like 4 of them. They had to match what was said in the upper left corner of my hboot screen. So let me knoe if it worked
I wonder if he could just wipe that SD card, place a new Rom etc on it and reinstall. Bricking displays no response you've got a better shot at recovering course your SD card/battery could be bad
Since you're trying to flash the 3.x.x.x version of CWM, that may be your issue. Here's a zip for 2.5.0.5, one of the most stable earlier Recoveries. Flash through hboot as per usual.
If that doesn't work, (I'm assuming that you can boot the phone normally at this point) try re-rooting with the Unrevoked tool.
Then use Rom Manager to flash a newer Recovery (be sure to check Erase Previous Recovery under Settings). If that still doesn't work, I'll see about packaging an RUU in a PB31IMG.zip with a valid version of CWM as the recovery.img within that zip. I'm not sure about the practicality of this final option, but if it comes down to it, I'll attempt to package that up for you.
This sounds incredibly frustrating. Thus my interest in the matter.
There's gotta be a way to fix this... even if it's just long enough to get S-On and keep your warranty valid.

This would work if he could access CWM Recovery, but he can't, thus the issue.
I wonder if he could mount something from within hboot and replace the binary code for the recovery image with a bunch of zeroes and then try flashing another through hboot again.

I was JUST about to post the same topic when I came across this. I have done the stock image restore, restored BACK to hboot 0.92, back to the most current INC radio, and have tried flashing CW3.0 and Amon_RA. Everything flashes fine but the boot loop continues and if I try to enter recovery, it lasts maybe one full second before rebooting again. The only thing that I can think of that would create this situation for me was that earlier I was trying to update the PRL via *228 on MIUI but the dialpad never popped up so I hung up.

I'll take another crack at it, but I don't think I had gotten the wrong image. No worries though, it's easy enough to try again using the link on page 1 directly. Can't hurt, right ;-)

Thanks for the sympathy . Like I mentioned, I visited the Verizon store and a new one is on its way... doesn't that mean that it doesn't matter (other than for science sake) whether this gets S-On or even fixed?
[waiting for flash of build-3.26.605.1-release-152016-baseband-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG.zip]
It just seems unlikely that this is a problem with flashing the wrong recovery, or the wrong stock image, since booting into recovery and booting normally both exhibit the same behavior. If I could boot normally into recovery but not boot into a stock image, I would suspect that I had flashed the wrong image. Since both have the same problem, I think it might be something else.
[finished flashing build-3.26.605.1-release-152016-baseband-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG.zip]
Same behavior. White htc Incredible splash screen -> darkness for a second (presumably while the ROM tries to boot) -> reboot.
Alternatively, HBOOT -> Recovery -> White htc Incredible screen -> Triangle / ! error screen for a half second -> reboot.
[finished flashing CWM 2.5.0.5]
Same behavior:
HBOOT -> Recovery -> White htc Incredible screen -> CWM recovery 2.5.0.5 for a half second (this confirms that it flashed properly) -> reboot.
I've seen threads like this but not quite the same. I'm trying to help fix my bosses Evo. I have the MT4G, so it's similar; still HTC but I guess the rooting methods or different. I'm trying to help him unroot now to sell it, but he's bricked it pretty badly. The phone will only boot into the bootloader. I put the PC36IMG file on the sd card, and it seems to start to flash that then freezes after counting up to [9] WIMAX.
If any of this is familiar to you guys, I would appreciate very much some assistance. I can't get anywhere but the bootloader, and it starts doing its own thing right away, so I guess my options are to somehow adjust the SD card using my PC. Thoughts? Thanks guys!

What version is the bootloader showing?
It shows HBOOT-0.76.2000 with radio 2.15.00.09.01. Hopefully that's helpful. Thanks again!

No big deal then, definitely not bricked...
Remove the SD Card from the phone, put the battery back in, boot back up to boot loader, plug the phone into the PC, (You might have to install HTC Sync for this) Then press the power button on the "FASTBOOT" option. Then run this exe: http://u.115.com/file/t541677279 <--- same link as the RUU EXE here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874091&highlight=stock+ruu
It's the RUU for the 3.70 update for the phone. it will return it to stock, reload the entire phone to that update, which is 2.10 hboot, and 3.70 software.
That's great news. I'll try right when I get home from work and report back in a few hours. Thank you very much!
unknownforce beat me to it yeah do what he says and have you which pc36img file did you try the amon ra right?
Hmmm... it won't seem to respond to me pressing the power button to choose options. I know the power button isn't physically broken, since the phone still powers on using it. But I've got the files you linked to downloaded and on the sd card and HTC sync installed, when I boot up it begins loading then wants me to make a selection, but I can't make any adjustments.
Okay, I've gotten past that (I had the wrong file.) Now I have the correct file, but I'm back to where it pulls up a list of things like Bootloader, Radiom Boot, Recovery, System, etc... and ends with Wimax. Then it just stalls. Because it won't boot up HTC Sync doesn't recognize it. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Forgot to mention that this phone is not finding the PC36DIAG file. I don't know if that means anything... but several hours of trying and I'm feeling like giving up.
