HBoot 2.02, HW ver 0004, custom kernels? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Pardon my ignorance here, but I just swapped out my Epic for an EVO, and I can't seem to find a solid answer for this:
I have a Ver 0004 EVO with HBoot 2.02, and after checking out my evoinfo.txt, it seems I have a Nova screen. Is there any way I can find out what version of the camera I have, so I can see if I can install custom kernels or not? I'm assuming that since the drivers source code wasn't released yet, there are still no custom kernels for the new cameras. I'm currently running MYN's with HTC's 17 kernel, s-off, but to be honest I'd love to try one of the Desire HD roms, or CM since I had it on my Hero.
Also, I'm still within my 30 days and have NO issues with swapping my EVO until I get the hardware version combos I want. What are the differences between the nova and epson screens? If I have a hardware 0004 phone anyways, should I be looking for an Epson screen over the Novatek, or are the Nova screens better? Picture quality, backlight, color saturation, etc.
Thanks in advance for the help guys.

If its a version 4, you have the newer camera hardware.

nova screens are a little brighter, and have more of a blue "cool" tint to them. epsons have more of a warm tone, and the whites look a little yellow.

OK, so look for HW 0003, with a Nova screen. Sad part is, the phone I originally swapped out was that combo, but there was horrible light leakage.

I didn't know 0004's had nova that must be very rare I still can't tell which I have the dmesg letters hurt my eyes
Swyped from Eva running Myn's RLS4!

So wait, Nuggy, you have HW 0004 and a custom kernel?

Is there a way to identify the camera chip?

I have a rooted EVO with Hardware Version 003 and was curious to know if there was a way to identify the camera chip in my phone (as I just found out that some of the 003 versions have the same chip that is in the 004 and therefore would benefit from the 3.30 OTA)
Thanks in advance..
What's the difference between the new camera chip and the old one?
Sure there is, just take your phone apart. Or you could try one of the older ROMs and see if the camera still works.
I was told if you are able to run a custom Kernel and your camera still functions properly you have the old chip. Don't know if this is true being that I got a 0003 Evo days before they rolled out the 0004's, so I would think I have the new chip but all old roms and custom kernels work fine for me. I'd also like to know what the improvements are regarding the new chip cuz my camera is ****...

Yes it is true. I have a 0004 version phone and my kernal only works with Myns rom with the #17 kernal. I have tried every other kernal and its a no go. Only a black screen.

In what ways is it better? If it is "better" at all?

Sounds like a downfall. Wanna trade? haha
I've heard that one camera isn't "better" than the other but rather, HTC had to go to a different parts supplier.
If anyone knows any different, please add.

If HTC swapped chips with out upgrading, they really have their head up their @ss. IMO that's the Evo's only downfall, the camera with my a500 killed the Evo cam I think my i880 did too.
I have 2 EVO's, one with the new chip and one ithe the old chip and 3.29 software. Bought them the same time. There is a huge difference. The new chip focuses quick even in low light. Almost impossible to to get a blury pix, even if moving while pressing the shutter. Tried with Barcode software. On small barcodes the new chip grabs the code and on the old chip you screw arround forever. Also the color accuracy is almost perfect on the new chip. On the old one it appears to accent blues. HTC is trying to cover it up and claims there is no difference in cameras or software, only a different vender for 2 months and now they are back to the origional camera. That sounds like a crock to me.

Rooted Incredible not as fast as stock?

Hey everybody, I have a curious question for everyone, have you ever compared your rooted phone to a stock Incredible? I'm just curious because my sister just got a new Incredible from Verizon and it just seemed a little snappier than my phone running CM 6.1 Anyone else ever experience this? Also her screen seemed a bit nicer, is there any chance I recieved an LCD model and she got an LED? How would I find this out? Thaks everybody.

How many apps does she have installed? Just wait a month when she has 20 or 20 so apps downloaded. And if it's still faster, your rooted, you have a custom rom, just overclock, and rip her apart on benchmark.
Haha, the funny thing is she actually has more apps installed than I do. I've never really overclocked my DINC either.

Damn, that's weird. And I only overclock if I'm running a benchmark, or using psx4droid, because nothing says speedy playstation games then 1.19Ghz.
And if it feels speedy then it probably is just the UI (sense) making the basic screens quick and snappy. Both of you download an app that uses alot of processing power (psx4droid) and see who's comes out on top.

Dunno bro.
In my experience with CM with the Droid 1, it's always been a quirks first performance second rom. If you go back to a stock rooted ROM it should be faster.
Just think I found out the opposite, I've had my Incredible since the first day of release, so I should have the AMOLED and she has the SLCD, so does anyone know if the SLCD has better quality than the AMOLED?
Better contrast on the amoleds.

The amoled is hardware version 0002 in settings and slcd is 0003.
Amoleds have a higher contrast ratio, so everything looks a little richer on amoled. However, the pixel arrangement is a little different, so text should look a little clearer on the slcd display.
Its a trade off; I'd go for the amoled if I had a choice.

It may not be the app count that matters as much as the type of apps.. And have you ever changed kernels when you switched to cm6?
Last time I was running Cm 6.1 I had Invisibleks #18
Its a number of things. A huge dalvik cache from regular use, browser history, app cache, lots of gmail, text messages, ****ty apps with memory leaks, album thumbs, sync schedules, etc. Also an odexed phone optimizes an app's library making it slightly snappier.
ok, well invisa-whatever(can never remember its name???) is a "special" kernel(sorry if your its dev and reading this), apps arent gona kill you that much... if you running slower rooted and on a dif rom then chances are its your kernel... most roms run faster than the stock. OC'd phone have a tenancy to kill battery very quickly, and the inc already has bad batt life(only thing I dont like about it) so I would suggest flashing a dif kenrel and possibly a dif rom... find a rom w/ sense that you like and ziggy is where its at... if you can find a asop kenrel by him(there are a few i think) then that would likely be your best bet for non sense kernels. His kernels are usually very snappy and can be OC'd if you really want, not to mention the batt life is amazing by comparison. I hate to sound like a ziggy fan boy but it really is the best kernel set I have ever used.

[Q] Any time I flash a kernel my camera stops working

I followed the root guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
and am running the sprint lovers rom but....
I am ok without Fresh but not ok with the stock kernel the battery drain is horrible..
I have tried the SBC kernel, and the netarchy-toastmod kernels.. if i flash either one of them in any flavor.. my camera stops working
I had a V003 evo from June but it had the purple hue screen and was gathering dust under the screen as well so I picked up a new one for $140 at radio shack and sold the old one.
the new one says V003 but honestly anytime i flash a kernel other then what comes in the above link my camera stops working so i am thinking it may have the new camera hardware but be labled v003...
any suggestions, feedback, options?
thanks in advance!
EDIT:
Phone info:
Hardware V 003
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel that works 2.6.32.17-gee557fd #15
Build: 3.70.651.1
dont remember how to itentify my panel if that helps remind me how ill gladly share
It most likely has the new camera. The new source is needed to get it working on custom kernels. 003 and 004 have this new camera in it.

[Q] Evo hardware question. Please and thank you

I had a couple HW:004 and now I have a HW:003.
Really, what are the differences?? And should I go through the process of unrooting and exchanging for an 004 and rooting again?
The main difference is how the camera was set up, that's about it really. Some people say the screen is just a little different as well.
What do you mean by 'set up'? Is it hardware, software? Is the 004 camera technically different or better than the other 003 version?
Thanks a lot!!
I believe it is software, but its still 8MP 720p HD recording, just differently integrated into the phone. Its still the same, just different, if you know what I mean.
Lol
welp doesn't seem like it's worth the unroot, exchange, re-root process.

I've been reading about the 003 hw version and the kernels for it. That there are more options and better flashable kernels. Would you by chance have a link or know the location of these kernels?
My preference is a kernel with an overclock(maybe an undervolt) without the need for an overclock app, for the stock 3.70.
Thank you!!

anything with HAVS basically has a setcpu installed inside, SBC offers full bettery charge.
There ya go

Hardware differences?

I have seen multiple posts on how there is a different screen from 002 to 003, but what about everything else? Whats the difference between 003 and 004 and what does each one entitle to being different? Does it matter if you are running 004 and put on a rom that doesnt say if its only for a certain version?
What i did was i rooted and installed myn's warm twopointtwo on my cousins 004 evo and now his camera will not work. Is this because of the hardware version or is it something different?

What exactly is happening when you try to use the cam? does it crash and go back to the home screen or does it just have a white screen instead of showing the camera view?
the main difference in the hardware version is the type of screen that you have (epson or novatek). I don't think that there are alot of differences other than that.
The camera will not start up most of the time and when it does it will be a black screen. It still has the interface to take pics, go to gallery and the settings menu but even if you take a picture its black
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The Hardware version isn't a guaranteed indicator of which screen type you get; there are Novatec and Epson screens across all of the hardware versions.
The differences are subtle; slightly different material for the back cover, different height for the power button, etc. Hardware version 004 I believe does have a slightly different camera module though. Specs are the same, but it's a different model number. I don't know the exact model numbers specifically, though.

What version of warm 2.2 are you installing? For 004 hardware it needs to be rls4 or rls5 as they will include the new camera drivers( most 004's have a different camera)
