i mean is there a benefit to doing it over the data part? only diff i'm aware of is that (in this case, street view) putting an app in the system bit means i can't update it and as i can't get adb working on my PC, then i have to :
backup all my apps, barr those in system, flash a new rom (but remove the apks from the zip file), then reinstall all apps again
i need google street view and since adb doesnt work, this is the only way that i know of how to do this.
They're put on /system/app as that's where they originally live...if it's an app from the Market it will update itself correctly
It's also a space thing as if they were all on /data/app then you'd eat up your space in no time (unless using A2SD)
umm, ok stupid queston, why is it then no matter whose rom i try (here or modaco), if an app is on /system it is never updated? i *always* get an error during installation
few weeks back, it was google maps, now it's the updated street view.
i've flashed a new rom now but removed street.apk from the zip and can now install just fine, and can update as needs be.
I dunno, I'm stock and just today had Flash and Maps update automatically
If your system apps won't update there's something wrong with your custom ROM.
it wouldn't just be me then though?
i'm using leedroids latest and that's not updating, same with opendesire earlier on, modaco ones etc etc
Are you wiping before you install the ROMs? I've never had a problem updating system apps via the market in my ROM.
of course. full wipe

just uninstall the app and re-install it from market
You can't if its on the system partition. Updates go on the /data/ partition, though...
Other way is to get the APK in question and install it using a file manager, it'll do the same thing
uninstalling also isn't allowed, neither is updating. it seems that once it's there, it's there.
now, i've got adb working and can list what's in system etc but it gave a read only error when i was trying to 'rm Street.apk'
remount didn't appear to be a valid option. alls working now anyways. just need to remember to remove certain apks from a zip before flashing.
funky
You *can* update system apps with market updates, as has been said before. The app remains on the system partition and the phone uses the data version instead. If it's not working for you I don't know why, but it's absolutely fine for me.
So what we need is a mod that will give you the option of replacing the system/app with updated market version, but replaces it on system and not data.

Thats great for you, and i appreciate that you do that with your rom +mods, but it means relying on you. Would be good if android would have it as an inbuilt function.
But i guess with newer phones having increased internal storage + a2sd this won't be an issue for much longer.
It's never going to happen as part of standard Android, because the system partition is read only. Also the system has to be a set standard in order to allow upgrades to work.
Hello everyone.
I've recently switched to the Data++ Hboot with 10MB cache. Ever since then I haven't been able to download large apps from the Market.
I was wondering how to make the Market save the APK's on the SD Card instead of the cache partition. If I remember correctly this has been implemented in a number of ROMs, including the Oxygen ROM to name one. Where would I change that?
Sorry for deviating from the topic, but I have this strong urge to ask you this: How did you get 10MB cache with Data++? According to alpharev.nl, Data++ gives 5MB cache....
On a side note, I also have 10MB cache but my apps are installing fine (with a little help from A2SD).....how big are the apps you're trying to download? Maybe I haven't come across "big" ones yet...

Oh I see they've updated their website. I'm using an older version of Data++ (System 180M, Cache 10M, Data 261M). I still have the img plus a screenshot of the website to compare MD5, if you're interested.
Well, it was just a guess. Downloads to Angry Birds (both versions) and Rocket Bunnies are not working, to name a few. Since they're all over 10MB I assumed it was due to the smaller cache partition. I'm also using A2SD btw.
Hmmm, they are not too big then (was expecting 20+MB).....I just downloaded those two apps couple of hours ago on my one and it's running fine even though I've only got 10MB cache.
Normally you'd need a file manager (like the one with Titanium backup or root explorer) to do the job of moving .apk files to SD..these are normally stored in /data/app inside the internal memory and requires root access to get them...but the files must be downloaded in the first place.
Is your system up-to-date? I too had similar problems until I did a complete flash-over and updated everything.... unfortunately I didn't work out the cause of it

Oh I see, I was under the impression the apks get saved on the cache partition. In that case, I should look for the problem elsewhere. Yes, I'm running the latest Sense ROM (2.29 with the 5 ending), but modified to suit my needs. I guess it could be related to that.
More info about the 'non-downloading'. When I click on install in the Market, the download icon appears quickly in the notification bar and then quickly disappears. Was this the same problem you were having?
In short....yes...that was the main sympton I had....the download icon disappears quickly....and it only happened to some of the apps
Have you tried rebooting the phone?...

Yes, tried that. Also tried clearing the dalvik cache and cache but with no success. I have found this while looking for a solution on Google. Seems someone else is having the exact same problem.

Hmm, yea. The thing that's really frustrating is I still don't know what the problem was in my case..if I did I could've been a little bit more helpful. In my "rage" I just flashed a new kernel and a new ROM and that sorted out the problem for me....didn't stop to wonder what was actually causing it.
EDIT: I think changing the kernel, especially, did it for me...
Hmm…
I have the same problem (except my /cache is 3MB so I can't download files larger than that).
Funny though, it used to work just fine (I have Angry Birds and flash for example), it has only recently started to act up.
If anyone finds a solution (possibly without flashing), I'll be quite grateful
P.S.
When my download fails (downloading icon simply disappears), my logcat shows DownloadManager reporting that there is not enough space (with about 60MB on /data) and then Vending complains about the file not being found (because DownloadManager didn't download it).
Seems like a bug in DownloadManager to me. It probably doesn't look up the cache (mine is in /data/cache IIRC) but uses the free space on /cache to determine if there is enough to fit the .apk.
I'm now working on same think. Need to Market downloading apps to SD card instead of /cache. So is there any tweak for this?
Yep.
Requires a little bit of knowledge about how linux handles mount points.
Basically, the easiest way is to bind mount a folder on the sdcard/data to /cache.
I get this .. I just clear the market cache ... go back into the market , all fine .
I normally have to " download " stuff 3 times , before it installs.
ROM: Cyanogenmod-7-09192011-NIGHTLY-Desire
Market version: 3.1.5
Every time I start market it works perfectly 4-5 seconds, and than I get message "The application Market (proces com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly." And "force close" option.
I had no problem with market v2.
New market doesn't like my 5MB cache partition, even though its bound to data. The logcat shows this
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It was working fine on cm7 here, ensure the correct permission are set
Anyway I removed it as it is completely unusable under low edge connection, even on wifi its slow
Sent from my HTC Desire
Works fine so far on my device running oxygen 2.2.2 and oxygen r2 hboot. No problem downloading even with bigger files.
But like mentioned before it's totally not useable under slow connections, so back to version 2 for now.
I figured out that version 3.1.3 is working normally and version 3.1.5 not.
I unistalled updates to v2 but few minutes later it has been auto updated do 3.1.5 again.
Remove MarketUpdater.apk from /system/app. But make a backup before, just in case. Or are you on stock rom?
This same thing is happening to my wife's Desire. I have her on cm7 RC1 and AlphaRev's modified partition sizes. I can't remember if I had her cache size reduced or not.
Anyone find a solution for this yet?

You could try making an expandable ramdisk for cache. Im going to try this again when I get chance.

on cm7 with 5mb cache partition it works..so i dont think its a problem with the cache..
maybe some crap market data somewhere in the rom..to make a clean thing, u should remove at all the market from ur system..reboot couple of times (without market, so the market data should be deleted) then push the new market in system and i wuould say it should work for sure

Ok, that's good to hear. I hate having to do system critical stuff to her phone cause my luck tends to bricks things time to time, and if it's my phone then no big deal, I can take the time to fix it. But when it's hers.... well, you know. Took me long enough to convince her to let me flash cm7.
I'll try to do your suggestion and I'll report back.

Its definitely something to do with cache.
Code:
purchase to PURCHASE_COMPLETED, the tickle was faster.

17:36:17.625 Error 1164 statfs /cache/download failed, errno: 13
17:36:17.625 Debug AndroidRuntime 1164 Shutting down VM
But what can market data do to cache?
of course u should have the /cache/download symlinked to /data/..somewhere..i dont have that error..do u have that symlink?
EDIT: btw i found statfs errno = 13 mean permission denied..so it fails to execute the statfs command..are the permissions correct for the /cache/download/? Maybe the new market do some additional checks

Its a bind rather than simlink, but yes, same script as CM now use. It happens both with and without. I'll have a look at that though...
EDIT - Changed from rwxrwx--x to rwxrwxrwx, reboot, no change.

Yeah..as the title says.. 3 weeks ago this hacker hacked into my network..
placed rootkits in all my 3 computers and then hacked its way to my Desire and my wifes iphone. good thing i had wireshark running same time.
So.. 5 units hacked with the method in like 1 houre. Bad luck for me i guess.
And kaspersky didnt give me any warnings at all. bye bye kaspersky.
Anyway... i flashed my desire's HBOOT just to be sure. after i did a check with "AutoKiller Memory Optimizer" all kinds of malware services was attached to most of my apps.
1- downgraded HBOOT
2- flashed stock HBOOT from alpharev
3- Changed recovery from CWM to 4EXT as i suspected the recovery being infected somehow.
I checkd my log... the hacker had removed some files and moved shell files from an folder to another as well as busybox and so on. it was so many i thought il be better of installing new ROM.
I tried with Gingervillain first... everything installed fine..
checking with "root explorer" i see same files that had been moved and added was still there.
OK.. i tried again..
full wipe with 4ext and then installed Runnymede.. still.. when i check my root partition most of the files still there and i get same results doing a root check.
any idees...? im not sure if my kernel is right. it should be, when i installed Runnymede. when checking kernel v.
it says.. "[email protected] #11"
May be kernel rootkit? does the kernel start before recovery?
can someone plz confirm this?
baseband seem to be the same
any advise as for how to start from scratch will be much appreciated.

Full wipe wipes /cache, /data and /sd-ext to my knowledge. There is a possibility some of the files remain on /system. Use 4EXT to manually format each partition using format option.

That seems in order. Long name in attach marks modules added to that kernel.

Ok
well.. i did the format manually in 4EXT.
I suspect some files still to be there..also some boot files containing malware script.
what file contains the boot script? i mean.. what file is the first to be triggered when booting in HBOOT. because many things in the recovery doesnt seem right. and the hboot fastrecovery starts with a delay.
Like when i want to partition or when i want to format all partitions except sd. Acts like it doesnt want to.
Anyway.. was just wondering if i could just adb and delete every file folder that is in in my phone and then flash recovery and ROM again.
Is that what RUU does?
is that something to recomend?
RUU is complete wipe of everything. /system, /hboot etc.
Download the correct one for your phone, *follow its instructions* (may need a gold card - google it) and run it on a clean pc.
Clean your pc ie format and reinstall after taking backups.
Then start again wit ha new hboot/rom setup.
Is that even possible? Infecting an Android phone via a Wi-fi network?
And Recovery shouldn't be able to get infected. I think ONLY /data can, and eventually /system if it's mounted as RW.
But on a wipe data gets deleted, and on a ROM install /system and boot (which holds the kernel and ramdisk) is deleted anyway.
RADIO starts before HBOOT. And there's absolutely no way they can be infected.
To be safe:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery *OVERKILL*
Then just do fastboot flash recovery {RECOVERY}
And there's nothing more you must do. HBOOT reflashing is 100% pointless.

I just installed cyanogen mod 7.2 stable(It's a clean install and i have wiped every thing) following that installed the latest gapps package(gapps-gb-20110828-signed).
The market would not even load and crash constantly.
I have tried these tips:
1.Cleared data and cache (settings-> applications-> market -> Then clearing cache)
2.Wiped Dalvik cache
3.Fixed permissions.
4.Changed "language"
5.Re-installed gapps package.
All this was to no avail.
Downloaded "jelly bean" market and installed it.
Now the market would load ok but it crashes when i try to download some application. It sucks.
Any suggestion ?
Try Increase your MTD Partition if you have any... It should fix it... If not, delete your account from the settings (Accounts) and log on while opening PlayStore. Hope it helps.
Have you flashed the right Gapps? Some of the latest ones are for ICS Users and i have found they dont work.
Just google "Gapps" and then find the one without ICS
Hope this helps

Deleting the account and factory reset is not working....even installing the CM 7.2 again and again is not working.
What does it have to do with MTD partition ?I have got sufficient internal memoery as i told you that it's a clean install and I don't have any app installed on my device except custom CM apps.
What about going to Setting > Manage applications > Market > Force close
I know you may have tried it and seems silly but i had a problem updating my apps and i did this and everything seems to work. What about a reboot?
Edit: I found this temporary workaround so see if this helps!
Here is what I did:
1- go to app manager from settings,
2- uninstall the latest version of google play store
3- clear data and cache of google play store
4- install version Google Play Store v3.5.19
5- when you open the market, google will still prompt you to update to the latest version (dont continue, leave it as it is)
6- if you want to update/install the apps do it thru the browser in your phone/computer (it will straight away update in your phone)

If you have Custom MTD partition, the issue may be, you have a low space reserved for System (Where GAPPS are installed) and more for Data.
Try using 175, 15... It is sufficent enough to run smoothly.

BTW,How did you figure out that [mtd 175 15] will work on "CM 7.2 Stable"?Just wondering can’t we take some more space from “system”.I have had [mtd 140 5] working well with "CM Nightly”.
Not sure how much we can take from system to flash CM 7.2 Stable but I guess we can still reduce "cache" to 5MB.

And search a lil' before posting... I've had the same problem not so long ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689239
I found out the partition size because I also wanted more space for Data as I don't like installing apps on SD (It can easily get corrupted as you use the SD with your PC during File Transfer, etc and or malfunction as some SD cards aren't that strong and I don't trust any!). That partition made it run.
Another way you can increase your partion size is simply by taking out pre-installed apps and or ringtones/notifications, etc you feel you don't need (My style). Anyway, I run Erwin P's ICS on Wildy now while having a backup of my CM7 incase I need to use the Camera/Video app again... LOL (I haven't tried using the dual booting thing... Always speculating, say I am lazy... Will try that out someday soon).
Anyways... Glad you have your phone working now.
Cheers.

Cheers.

I kind of agree with most of your post,I only ever use ext for sense roms.
You say " Another way you can increase your partion size is simply by taking out pre-installed apps and or ringtones/notifications, etc you feel you don't need" I now what you mean but this doesn't increase your partition size, removing files etc from system only frees up space in the partition not increase it. Custom mtd is the only method I know to increase system partition. Regards slym.

Sorry... I guess that ain't clear enough... What I meant is this... Remove some stuffs from the ROM and Increase your Custom MTD partition... For example, if 100, 10 makes it run smoothly without edit, after edit, 90, 10 might run it good giving you extra 10MB for data... Hope I am clear here.
Cheers.
Sorry for double posting... Connection ish...

TBH I had done enough research to fix the issue.I did what one usually would have considered good research else it shouldn't have taken more than 5 endless days and nights
Even on CM forums,Android forums and several blogs.Don't know why couldn't find your post.
Anyway,"olu.danNY's" advice helped me else i was going to ditch CM7 for some other ROM .In my opinoin there should be a thread where users can update their working MTD partitions regarding their ROMs.
Right now I am running CM 7.2 Stable with [mtd 140 15] and some other users are running it even with [mtd 130 15]. i.e cache partiton was the root of the trouble.

I found out the partition size because I also wanted more space for Data as I don't like installing apps on SD (It can easily get corrupted as you use the SD with your PC during File Transfer, etc and or malfunction as some SD cards aren't that strong and I don't trust any!). That partition made it run.

I also prefer removing pre-installed apps using TB but that doesn't really help you that much.
Custom MTD partition does the real rescue and you can also use "S2E" to gain more space by moving apps to Ext partition e.g games, maps.Just make sure you don't move app data to Ext.
SOLVED
P.S. Don't attempt to shrink the cache partition "too much".
Keep it(Cache) ≥ 15

YMMV - especially with CM7. It has been mentioned a few times over the forum that CM7 has a bind script which makes your whole /data partition used as cache - as long as it's activated (default) and not corrupted there shouldn't be any problems with the play store. No idea regarding other situations but I know of people running a 5MB cache partition on CM7...

Yep,I know CM7 has some sort of script that automatically moves cache to data partition if it overflows(larger than the cache size).
I have had [mtd 140 5] working well with "CM Nightly”.
No idea why it is causing trouble with CM7.2-Stable. Maybe it's lacking that script which makes it sufficent enough to run smoothly if cahce partition is <15.
