All of it's stupid retarded quirks, bugs, and glitches have worn me thin in the patience department for this stupid phone.
The final straw that broke the camels back:
Now for absolutely NO reason on every reboot the WiFi is switched on. Yet it doesn't do anything. The WiFi light blinks and the icon appears but that is it. After around 3 minutes of the phone being on, it switches off by itself.
I have NEVER had this problem before and I haven't changed ANYTHING on my phone for a solid few months.
This is the type of **** I'm talking about. Windows Mobile just breaks itself for no friggin reason other than it is poorly written.
If they had a "Trade your Windows Mobile device for an iPhone" promotion, I would be the first damn person in line.
I am over Windows Mobile and Microsoft in general.

I've been looking into getting a blackberry probably a curve. as long as I can find a device that let me ssh and telnet into the servers I support I'm good.
I have gotten over all the things you can do with it...I actually did a hardreset and really do not have plans on putting too many custom apps onit ...I just want the device to work as intended...the hell with the pizazz
try a symbian based phone. i use one as my second phone. i never reflashed it just works all the time.

I believe the 3G iPhone is coming out this year. They need one like the touch slide or something. I text too much to consider the iPhone's keyboard.
LOL @ Symbian based phone... A few of us have tried it with "smart" phones - I, for example, tried it with a Nokia E61. All I can say is - good luck... The software you can get for the symbian pretty much all sucks and looks like it was written for Windows 3.1 (and as a software developer I know why - the way software is written for Symbian OS couldn't possibly be more quirky); the menu system looks and feels like win 3.1, and the OS itself has EVERY BIT as many quirks. Oh - and outlook push? Good luck - they'll say it can do it - have fun with that (haha). Blackberry push? Same there. Office documents? Sure - open them... Have fun editing and then trying to re-open desktop side. The *only* thing symbian does better, in my opinion, is allow syncing with more than one PC - but since I have outlook push to my 8525, that's not an issue for me anyway
I tried and tried to love my symbian. In the end, I unloaded that turd for less than $100 US on eBay and bought my 8525 - which SMOKES the symbian based E61.

Like I said it's a second phone (actually my wife's) it takes good pictures and can do more than the average phone. I actually like the camera better, when you click the button it actually takes the picture. MP3 ringtones actually work flawlessly from the sd card. I wish MS and HTC could get those 2 issues right. Otherwise, I really enjoy tweaking my phone and installing ton's of useless stuff to waste my time....LOL... I started with my MPX200 and after my backlight broke for the 10th time I grabbed the symbian phone, only to end up back with a MS based phone. MS is just too big to avoid. Could be better, but I still like the fact that I can customize till my heart is content....even with the bugs..keeps my adrenaline flowing....lol

Gotta agree.... symbian no way. Lived with it for ages on my SE P900 and it did rock but the support was garbage!
Moved on to the TyTN as a gamble and it was totally worth it.
Funny you guys mention that, I'm looking to get a Nokia E51 as my going out phone. I need something "smart" and small. Despite what you say, I love the navigation compared to Windows Mobile Smartphone (WM 6 Standard). You're telling me 5 different "more" pushes to get through settings? Screw that.

=) There are different followings. I love Windows Mobile... as long as it has a touch screen. I've played with many of the WM Standard (and by standard, I mean non-touchscreen devices) devices released in the states, and they all seem cumbersome as hell. Recently played with a Blackjack II and it had literally 7 pages in settings. In my opinion, Symbian (S60) and BlackBerry have the non touchscreen OS market on lock. Whats the point of functionality if it takes too long to find it?
irockash I just bought an E51. It is one of the best and most capable phones I have ever had - for it's size especially. I am originally a Symbian fan, but once I was introduced to Windows Mobile 2 and a half years ago I bought little else but HTCs. I have to say, that every once in a while I go back to Symbian for a try - namely the latest Nokias - N82, E51 etc, and they are really trouble-free compared to WM. They don't freeze up, they work flawlessly, and generally run faster than MW phones. Unfortunately there's no Skype for Symbian - you have to use 3rd party apps like Fring, and they work alright. I have to say however that at the end of the day I would have to choose WM over Symbian if I want to have a SERIOUS phone with loads of functionality - the Nokias like the N82 are super because of the 5mega-pixel camera and very good video recording, but give me my WM anyday - and I mean HTC ONLY! I guess each of us has our preferences.
I have both a symbian (SE W950i) and wm phone (hermes)...
Simply put, Symbian is no where near WM as far as customization, flexibility, and support is concerned. Symbian is just too plain and bland, and the W950i freezes way more than my hermes, not to mention that occasionally I can't even pick up phone calls. What's worse....I cannot do anything about since I can't mess with the firmware.
OTOH, cooking WM is easy if you spend some time studying it. I can do almost whatever I want with it. Most "problems" people encounter has to deal with the Rom's stability + application installed.
I would never go back since using my WM touch screen phones. My wife can't figure it out though. Her 6682 runs without reboot though for about 2 weeks when the battery dies...lol. Then I find it in the car and charge it so I can call her sometimes....lol. It's simpler for her to use, but it's not near as capable as my phone. It's better than the free phones most people typically have. So if I was techno dyslexic I would go for the symbian phones.
MS squashed the competition and will keep it that way. Even the IPhone 2 is promising, but MS will squash them too. Thanks to Apple for reving up the competition though! (Bill Gates owns half of them anyway)
So if I had to give up WM, I'd be bored for awhile........ I would suggest loading a good reliable rom & don't load anything else. yeah right....
Agreed! Well said! I had an N82 for 3 days - I mean the camera IS on par with a DEDICATED digital camera - even for night photos - but the functionality and flexibility of WM phones are UNBELIEVABLE and that's what I'd go for if I had to choose only ONE of the two OSs and have it for the rest of my life. Regardless of the little idiosyncracies - Windows Mobile ROCKS!
Also, as a serious audiophile, I really really urge that people think TWICE, or TRICE, before jumping on WALKMAN phone. I bought the w950i as I only paid a little over $200 for it new, and it has 4gb built-in. I'd expected the sound quality to be at least as good as some MP3 players....boy was I wrong..my Hermes + SRS WOW with Stock earbuds beat the crap out of the walkmanphone with whatever EQ on it, even if I amped the phone and use it along with my Sennheiser HD600, there's still no match at all. I immediately felt stupid for buying that phone. Fortunately, the phone was for my GF so it didn't bother me too much and she didn't seem to care too much about Sound Quality, convenience was all that matters to her. As for me, WM, hands down. I wouldn't mind playing with an iphone after it gets matured. ATM, there's just so many things that's lacking on it...undeniably, the UI is great...Apple's always good with UI and design..a very innovative company indeed. And TBH, I thought HTC's Apps played a great deal of a role in keeping the competition up. If WM looks like WM5/Stock WM6....I wouldn't be surprised that WM would slowly get crushed by Apple in the future.
I will probably jump ship to when an 3G Iphone is available and I see that you can actually install 3d party apps on it.
I did however see the new Samsung I780 and it looks very nice, small formfactgor, localised proper keyboard, 3G, Wifi, bt, GPS and touchpad like on a notebook to control stuff..
I've been a WM user for a long time. I used to lurk on the forums waiting for all of the new roms waiting to install them all. I also used to try out EVERY new 3rd party app that hit the market. I've been a long time member here, in fact my registration here is the longest standing for any website I'm actually active on.
It pains me to leave it all though. I'm buying an iPhone in the next couple of weeks. When it first came out, I still had my "Well who cares, I've got my good old HTC" mindset but have seen it perform better for the purposes I have reduced to using my phone for.
I want to be clear on what those purposes are, I listen to alot of podcasts and audio books. I also do alot of email and text messaging. Thats pretty much it. I don't need a great camera or fast Internet. with that said, the iPhone handles the audio that has become such a big part of my phone usage over the past year better than any WM device ever built.
How can you go wrong with a 160dpi 3.5" multi-touch screen anyways?

My girlfriend got a blackberry curve a few months ago and I am amazed by how FAST and how WELL it works. Makes me jealous I'm stuck with this bloated troll known as Windows Mobile.
I definetly sympathize with you on this topic - many of times lately I've scoured the AT&T website debating to get a phone that I CAN'T flash 30 frigging times a day - just so I can lead a normal life again.
I think it boils down to what you want it to do. I like to have the flexibility to shape it any and every way I can, and try to find a way around something that doesn't work well. Some people prefer simple and reliable.

I live in Japan, home of some really slick phones that never make it to Europe or the states. Most people look at my Tytn and say things like, "its so clunky!" and "what?! it doesn't have a TV tuner?!"
But recently I sent my Tytn away for servicing (HTC refused me by the way, caught me out with a different bootloader) and it was away for a week. They gave me one of those slick phones as a replacement and I totally went into withdrawal. It felt like when I was quitting smoking and the replacement phone was like that nicorette gum - necessary and yet sooo unsatisfying. For me Matt, there is no more "normal life" to go back to.
Iphone is really, really nice. But in the end it is going to be just like Mac computers. With WM and with Windows, I can do what I want, how I want, when I want (and usually for free). Iphone and OSX trade these freedoms for a smoother, cleaner and more stable system. It is a fair trade-off and may fit some people's needs, but I'll take the former any day.
It is now 2nd half of 2010. Apple has released the 4th version of the iPhone. Blackberry has released it's best touch screen device to date, the BB Torch. Android is poised to move into 2nd place and can possibly become market share leader in the coming months. Windows Phone 7 is being polished and will launch within the next 2-3 months.
So where does this leave us Touch Pro 2 owners? Our processors, even when overclocked are not even close to what newer smartphones have under the hood. As much as I've enjoyed using WM 6.5 with HTC Sense and MaxManilla and Cookies HomeTab and MaxSense, I'm beginning to feel like no amount of tweaking and ROM flashing can save our devices. App support for WM 6.1 and 6.5 has come to a grinding halt in my opinion. No one can argue with the fact that all the best apps are now on iPhone and Android.
So I ask my fellow Rhodium owners... when are you going to switch, and what are you going to switch to?
im moving to android...next year when i get my upgrade...windows mobile...is dead...and it kinda hurts...because when it runs right...its so smooth, but alot of the consumer market wants apps, which WINMO does have...but we dont have the novelty apps like iphones and androids...to me android is like...iphone on steriods with a touch of windows mobile productivity
my contract will be expiring until aug of 2011 so I still got like a year to go until I can upgrade. Based on what I have seen so far, I think I will be moving to android or possibly to iphone 4 because now ATT requires everyone to get a data plan, I am possibly will move to iphone 4 becasue the price will be the same regardless it's a smartphone or iphone.
So far, I am looking at captivate, iphone 4, or xperia. I am leaning toward captivate and ihpone 4 but still have not yet made up my mind.
I like HTC's sense but to be honest, I am pretty much given up on any of the WinMo phones so it's most likely going to be either android or iphone.
The good news I guess for me is that I still got a year to go so I can wait and keep looking around and shopping.
yea, its almost the end for my Rhodium. Im looking at either the Blackberry Torch or any of the WP7 phone. Might try the torch first and let the WP7 matured out first.
But its been nice using the Rhodium, surely its not the quickest but it gets the job done. Im still gonna keep it, one of the best phone that i've use.
ill be switching to android, ive never liked the iphone OS and WP7 is just a clone
as for when, i dont know, im not under a contract ATM so ill switch whenever i see an android phone with a nice TP2-like keyboard, preferably on sprint
android on a htc device most likely. love winmo tho. if they get their act right ill remain loyal.

Maybe when/if ATT offers a subsidized flagship Android handset, then I'll think of switching. Especially a device with a slider QWERTY keyboard. Or if an unlocked Android phone really piques my interest (enough to justify paying full price).
Android seems to be carrying on in the spirit of Windows Mobile, offering customization and freedom, completely in contrast to Apple's walled garden. Its still not quite as slick and streamlined as the iPhone, but I have high hopes for Android in the next year or so.
As fluid, user-friendly, and popular as the iPhone may be, I still can't stand its closed architecture. Its annoying that Steve Jobs and Apple fanboys claim the iPhone is "the best" when they are still making big updates to add features which WM has had for years. Everything from tethering to multitask, icon folders, and on previous updates: cut&paste, stereo bluetooth, and so much more. And its still outrageous to me that you can't even activate an iPhone without installing Apple's bloated software package on your home computer.
I had big expectations for the Blackberry Torch and Blackberry OS 6, since there (for some time now) has been the possibility of my work forcing me to switch to a BB device. But it appears the phone has fallen far short of RIMs promises and hype. Blackberry 6 is still years behind Android and Apple. A pretty home page, with most things underlying basically the same as the old Blackberry, and tons of other issues. RIM has proven that they are out of touch with the new smartphone landscape, and will continue to lose market share to the competition. Too bad, with their dominance in the enterprise arena, and reputation for security, they could have stayed THE major player, if they had played their cards right.

I've already moved on from the TP2 to the Evo, and Android, not WP7 is the real successor to WinMo. For all the tweaks I made to get my TP2 working smoothly, the Evo trumped it in almost every way out of the box. Aside from voice dial, there isn't anything from WinMo that Android doesn't do better. Much better. I had been using WinMo since the Mogul, and while Android 1.6 isn't all that hot, 2.2 with Sense is both familiar and superior.
And the hardware just smokes the TP2.
android is really catching my eye right now. i got a tilt 2 off ebay a couple of months ago and its been fun using it. i also have a pure from at&t as well and i keep switching between the 2 devices. my wife has iphone and as great as it is its not for me. i love to custimise and tweak otherwise i might as well just have a crappy flip phone if i just wanted a phone. i keep eye balling the samsung captivate but im a big htc fan. i keep seeing leaked upcoming phones from htc but not sure if when at&t will get any of those. i am intrigued with wp7 as well. both i and my wife are eligible for upgrades and i use her line to upgrade phones for me as well. i dont want to jump the gun and get the captivate but its getting very tempting to since at&t suck at getting any new smartphones.

As someone who works in manufacturing, I was shocked that a product like this would even be marketed (I consider 5 soft resets a day and slow response as "defective".) I really wish I had gotten Android instead, but I'm stuck with this phone for the next year at the very least. I got burned!

I am not sure what I will be moving over to yet. Im on Sprint so I may look toward the Samsung Epic. That phone is Android but it does have an actual keyboard. I am sad too because I have become so accustomed to winmo. I love the file explorer, the freedom, the cutting and pasting. Perhaps I will wait to see what windows Phone 7 has to offer, but I think having the keyboard and the freedom to customize is most important.

You hit the nail squarely on the head here. I considered (and still am) an Android based phone but I like the "easy button" convenience of ActiveSync. I've owned all three iterations of the Blackjack and this is my first HTC product and I have to say that I am enjoying it completely. The price disparity between the Jack and the Tilt 2 was the only thing that kept me from buying it right off the bat. Having said that, some of the features that got broken with the WM6.5 update are unacceptable. Threaded messaging worked perfectly before I updated my Jack, not so much afterward, and I hope the new official ROM update for the Tilt 2 addresses this and other issues. It was a relief to find out that it was either a Microsoft or ATT software engineer that effed things up, and not a Samsung issue as I originally assumed.
I also considered the iphone, as when i got the Jack the 3GS model was coming out so I could've gotten a 3G for a song, but I feel the same about that crappy itunes garbage software. Absolute ****e, IMO. I had to fix my daughter's desktop so many times a few years back because of that crapware and I'm not willing to go there again.
I also considered a crackberry, but nothing really interested me at the time except for the Bold and that was just as expensive as the Tilt 2.

I'd say don't blame the phone, blame the software. While the Rhodium hardware may not spec out like the bleeding edge stuff that has been released in the last few months, it is more than up to the task of handling a properly polished WM6.x ROM. I really would have liked to see this phone with 6.1 on it. As I implied in my above reply, 6.1 worked pretty flawless for me but 6.5 has been just this side of an unmitigated disaster. Throw in all the bloat and crap that ATT wants to put on their WM smartphones and you have what we got.
Again, my hope is that the new official ROM update will address all the issues that WM6.5 created.
I have had no problems and very rarely have to reset..
I'll be waiting until a good phone has all the hardware features I like in the TP2, either android or WM7 I don't care, I'll judge in a year.
The TP2 was the best phone out for me needs when I got it, and it'll be a year or so probably before something comes out that'll make me switch. It does all I want, and more, now. Higher res and faster speed would be nice, HDMI out and a few other hardware goodies would rock, but it isn't required.
I went thru the gambit of HTC/at&t phones over the last few years. I still even have a 3125 & 8525 in my desk. I got the first Tilt, and after I got it tweaked the way I wanted it, (eventually stayed with stock rom too), it has been a work horse for almost THREE YEARS! The last two years I had it, never had to hard reset it!!!
Now I have the Tilt2...all I can say is.... WOW... I am looking forward to the next three years.
One thing folks should understand about WinMo.. or Windows in general. A lot of the 'bugginess' can be attributed to third party apps, just like your desk/laptop.
I am worried about WinMo 7. I hear the new platforms are essentially a
Zune versus a pocket pc. My phone needs to be an extension of my desk/laptops, can a Zune platform fill the bill?

I think I could well be going to Android as I'm more swayed by the full qwerty keyboard than an operating system.
The new HTC G2 or Vision will be the way forward and I suspect I'll just take whatever OS is offered with it.
Even got a gmail account set up in readiness for the switch. It's a shame as I have no issues with WinMo but if they cannot provide the correct hardware then I'm off.
the touch pro 2 has been the best phone i've ever had. yes it was glitchy at the beginning and it froze daily, but with the right setup, its perfect. Im running the Energy Rom right now, with Spb Mobile Shell 3.5 and a custom Spb skin. Its so customizable its sickening. I've had it in this configuration for the last 3 months, and I have not had to reset my phone for that whole period of time. on top of that, my battery life is longer. I hope they will make an updated version of the Rhodium with the slide out keyboard. I really don't want to upgrade to a phone without it.

working in manufacturing, you shoudl have known to try out any technology before you buy it. i have tilt2 and i mess with it everyday, flashing and tweaking, and within the year or so ive had the fone ive only had 2 times where ive had to SOFT reset. never had a problem that needed a hard reset.
even now i have it oc'd at 768 and no freezing never lags, no errors.
a lot of times its just that you need to match the technology u buy. some people are windows peeps, some are google peeps, some are apple peeps.
if your constantly getting lags, needing to reset... blah blah blah... then u probably need a more simple form of tech like iphone.
if you like to tweak and customize (and know a lil something about computers) go for windows.
if you want a phone thats psp/computer, go with android.
you want a weak version of psp, go with iphone.

I am going to stay with the Tilt2 until sometime next year. I really do not care about the speed of the processor or much else as long as the phone does what I want it to do. However, support of applications is the main issue. More and more applications are getting released for the iPhone and Android only and there are a number I would like to have. MS has abandoned WinMo (which makes little sense to me, but anyway), so moving to a new platform is essential to obtain newer applications.
So, the choice is the iPhone or Android. I dislike Apple's closed system so this brings us to Android. Unfortunately, there is no Android device that I find compelling right now. What I want is an HTC device running Sense with a keyboard and at least a 4'' screen. Hopefully. such device would be released soon (it has to be GSM because of travel requirements).
Wow is all I can say...I bought the focus and the UI blew me away as soon as I turned it on, I bought the focus. I have used all the mobile OS and this by far is the most sleek, easy to use, and just plain nice of all, I don't miss c&p bug I do miss multitasking in apps like last.fm, I can still send it back and get something else, but what's better then this? I'm typing this from wp7 now and man this keyboard is awesome, the level of little details they put into wp7 is crazy, gotta say I'm really impressed here, I'm sticking with this for a while to see where this goes, hopefully MS stays true to their word and keeps on supporting with updates, as for apps, I've come to realize that I don't need a million apps, I only use like 20 anyway, but it seems to be growing fast anyway. All in all super impressed with wp7,9/10 from me and if this keeps getting better, I don't see myself going back to anything else.
Yea I played with the Focus today at the AT&T(worst wireless carrier in the universe) store and I love the UI and how smooth the OS is. I'm currently on Evo 4G, but I'm considering WP7 once it comes to Sprint. I previously had the iPhone 3GS and WP7 user experience is very comparable with iOS. While I like Android the lack of GPU acceleration is a huge issue, until that's implemented the user experience will never compare to iOS and WP7. I'm holding out for the January update to see if MS adds free turn by turn navigation, better landscape support(what idiot decided that you can't input a URL in landscape mode?), flash and copy and paste.
Is there a list of wp7 problems or missing features? Cause it seems like I'm missing very little atm.

Go Android or if you must iPh or W7 if you want all that exchange compatibility with MS apps etc at work.

Symbian has way better Exchange functionality than Windows Phone 7. WP7 may not be thoroughly suitable for serious business use until Q3/Q4 2011. It's not the device/OS to get if you want great Exchange support. An HD2 or Blackberry Torch would be optimal for business use (assuming you like Touchscreens, otherwise a Bold would do).
There is no comparison between WM6.5/Symbian and WP7 when it comes to Exchange support. WP7's support is actually kind of embarassing considering it comes from Microsoft, TBQH. It's better than Android at least, and maybe on par with iOS, or perhaps a little worse than Apple, even - at the moment, at least.

Well while I AM enjoying the focus at the moment, I am waiting for CES as well, I want to see what everyone offers as far as Android and Hopefully Nokia shows what it plans to do with Symbian because if it gets a revamp, I may have to get the N8, I will have a lot of money to spend, because I sold the extra focus I had (buy one get one free ATT), so If I want something else I can sell this one as well. Isn't it just Nokia now who are actively developing Symbian?
Symbian will be ditched to midend and Meego or however it's called will be used as highend platform. Known for months.
Symbian development is over for me. Nokia has a reeeaally hard time to give really competitive hardwarwe. I would forget it.
And yes, only Nokia does Symbian. All of the rest kicked it out, significant move.

Good post. You made some valid points, but I got the impression that you believe MS dropped the ball with WP7, and I don't believe that to be a true..or even fair assessment.
It is the nature of version 1.0 of just about anything to be incomplete..to be a work in progress. In regards to smart phone OS's, its always been that way. iOS v1.0 was very limited, as was Android 1.0, and so on so forth. I was an early adopter of both platforms and was at times frustrated by the limitations. But, as an early adopter I understood that this was the way it usually is, and that things would gradually flesh out.
For me, iOS never did "flesh out" enough. I've always loved the smoothness and general quality of iOS and the iPhone, but I found myself bored by it. Android did grow and develop quickly enough to keep me engaged, and I still enjoy the control I have when using Android...and also enjoy that the relatively open nature of it allows be to constantly tinker with my device. But, even though I usually enjoy doing so, the main reason I'm always tinkering with my Android devices is because I've never been satisfied with how they felt. I hate the apparently inherent choppiness and occasional lag of Android, and my main motivation for rooting my Android devices had always been to try to get rid that.
Somewhere between those 2 extremes lies WP7. Yes, in some regards it is limited. But, I can accept this for now because, as I mentioned earlier it is v1.0 and I know these limitations are being worked on as we speak. Many people are refusing to accept that, though...and it seems that you're one of them.
The gist of the argument seems to be that MS came late to the party, so they had already known what the dress code was, and shouldve showed up fully decked out. That they shouldn't have released v1.0 until it matched its contemporaries feature for feature. I disagree with this. I think MS was right in getting a v1.0 that provided the basic user experience that they were aiming for out there as soon as was possible. Did this strategy suddenly propel WP7 to the top of the smart phone world? No, not even close. But it has managed to grab just about everyone's attention...and has solidified it's position as a viable player. I believe that is all MS wanted to accomplish by rushing to release v1.0 just before the holiday season...and I also believe that it was better for them to do so than for them to sit out until after the holidays.
I am convinced that WP7 v1.0 is the best 1.0 smart phone OS released to date. I think that MS got the basics incredibly right...and that the limitations are going to begin to be addressed very soon. Yes, MS was late to the party, but they've shown up with more style than anyone else, if not with as much substance...and they are moving much faster than both Google and Apple did to provide said substance. WP7 is a joy to interact with. It is beautiful. It's fun. So much so, that despite the current limitations, I choose to use my HD7 as my daily driver...and to leave my Android phones at home.
WP7 is in many ways very good right now, and it has an extremely bright future. I can understand that some of you don't have the patience to wait for WP7 to catch up in the few areas that it's lacking in, but such patience is a prerequisite of being a happy early adopter. If you can't enjoy experiencing the growth process of a new platform, then maybe being an early adopter isn't for you. But, please people, don't make it seem like MS blew it in regards to WP7, because that couldn't be further from the truth.
Oh, one last thing. How in the world does the HD7 have horrible build quality?? Yes, as you tilt the phone away from the optimal viewing angle, the colors somewhat fade. It is not an AMOLED screen and the black levels pale in comparison..quite literally. But, when I use my phone, I tend to keep it within the optimal viewing angles...and within those parameters, the HD7's screen displays good and VERY natural colors..unlike the overwhelmingly oversaturated colors that my Galaxy S displays...and without any banding.
Also, I love the 4.3" screen. Those extra .3" make a real difference. Do I prefer the outrageously deep blacks and the incredibly effective viewing angles of the Super AMOLED screen? Yes, if course. But, I prefer my HD7's spacious, natural looking screen in every other way.
Outside of the screen though, I don't see how anyone can critize it's quality. I've owned MANY top of the line mobile devices, and none have felt better in the hand than the HD7. It looks good and feels good because HD7 uses high quality materials..unlike Samsung. People complain about the thinness of the back cover. It is just as thin..or thick, as the one on the Evo...and I don't see anyone criticizing it's quality. Despite being thin, it feels great when attached to the phone. The soft touch surface is great.
I'm also aware of the complaints about a relatively large gap between the removable and fixed portions if the back of the phone. I found this to be an optical illusion caused by the unfortunate location of the white sim card right where it's partially visible through the gap. But, I found an easy fix. I pulled my SIM card and colored the upper third of it with a black sharpie. Guess what...after that, the so called huge gap magically disappeared. The gap itself is no larger than on most phones. The location of the sim card was the problem. It looks great after taking a sharpie to it.
I can't reply to all the parts of that. Will take too long.
The build quality of the HD7 is terrible compared to the Dell Venue Pro. HTC was never known for having superior build quality. The HD2 was pretty good, though. Don't know why they paid so little attention to the HD7...
The HD7 has basically the same LCD panel from the Evo and/or HD2. It's not a good panel. It has bad color saturation and terrible viewing angles. It's also overly reflective. Size can only make up for so much, but you can get a Dell Venur Pro 16GB on contract for $50 less than an HD7 and the screen is only 0.2" smaller. The HD7 is a pretty bad phone by current standards. They used parts from last year to build a phone this year, and it's pretty apparent if you look at it next to other WP7 devices.
You can harp on the oversaturation in sAMOLED panels, but the fact and the matter is that it blows this crappy HD7 panel out of the water in almost any category. Viewing Angles, Brightness, Color Representation, etc. It's a bad screen. You can't make excuses for that... It almost looks foggy compared to an AMOLED panel (even something like the MyTouch 4G screen is obviously better).
Also, it has a smaller battery than some Blackberry Curve smartphones. 1150 mAh... Seriously? Anyone who uses their phone moderately will not be able to get good battery life out of that. It may be fine for YOU, at least now, especially with no third-party multi-tasking (this also makes WP7 perform artificially better compared to competing products - it only has to do one task at a time), but once that update comes and you're running 3-4 apps concurrently it will nosedize. All reviews has been pretty negative on the small battery in the phone.
The camera also isn't anything to rave about.
The materials used to build the phone are pretty dubious.
Build quality means the hardware build quality. It has nothing to do with the software.
Moving on to the software (WP7). Yes, they dropped the ball. They missed an opportunity to get a ton of frustrated Nokia and RIM users, as well as pick off more Android/iOS users when they decided to rush the OS out 6-12 months early with entire classes of functinality missing.
WP7 fails as a business phone right now, and Microsoft saying they're focusing on consumers is nothing short of an excuse. They said it will take almost a year to bake the business into the phone, so obviously that was in the roadmap. What they did was rush it out to try to save face while they "finished' the job. Coming from Android and Windows Mobile, some people are tired waiting on Manufacturers, etc. to "finish the job" while they sit there with a down syndrome phone saying "look how smooth it is, it's worth it!"
No HTML5 in the browser. No multi-tasking, C&P, embarassing Exchange Policy Support for a Microsoft OS, a user interface that in several areas looks like only 5 minutes was dedicated to design (Calendar, Dialer, etc.), lack of Flash (oand/r Silverlight), etc. Even blackberries have an HTML browser, now Not to mention WP7 didn't evne attempt to really exploit the enhancements made in Microsoft Exchange to convince business users to use it instead of RIM/Nokie/WM6.5 devices...
If you read my posts in this thread, you can clearly see that I'm not some Anti-WP7 fanboi.
But I think some people are making this OS to be way better than it actually is.
It really isn't revolutionary in any way, and falls on it face in many areas given what competing products can do and [rightfully] assuming competing products will improve as well.
The only thing that's really good about WP7 is the fact that it doubles up as a ZuneHD.
But a ZuneHD is cheaper than a whole smartphone and at this point in time it's almost worth buying an Andriod/iOS device and carrying a (much smaller) ZuneHD around than buying a WP7 device.
The hardware isn't all that good right now (will probably make a lot of "early adopters" mad at CES), and the manufacturers are paying little attention to what they're putting out.
If the Dell Venue Pro was in T-Mobile stores they would hardly sell any HD7s.

Coming from the hd2, the hd7 screen is fine. Maybe coming from a vibrant, its an issue, but I have seen more complaints about oversaturation and color banding of the focus screen then I have of the "washed out" look of the hd7.
I was a little worried about the back of the hd7, coming from the brushed aluminum back of the hd2, but since I'm not having to constantly pop the back to reset the phone, the back is no longer a worry and the texture is nice.
I've owned 4 HTC devices and overall the phones have been great. The best of them all (the hd2), is the only one that I had to replace due to failure. I consider that pretty good.
Maybe some early adopters will be frustrated by CES, but I doubt it. There haven't been many leaks of newer wp7 devices on the horizon. I think it might be fall before the next Gen wp7 devices hit, a full year after the hd7, which is about normal for new devices.

Dev has a warranty. Ill get enough time out of it until I get a mew device, if I get it. It a better phone than the hd7, in every imaginable way.

It's all well and good comparing feature lists, but really when you are talking about a smart mobile phone, it comes down to usability.
I put up with the quirks of WM5, 6.1 and 6.5 for a few years. While it did technically have a lot of features, it was slow and a pain in the ass to use. And if anyone not familiar with the phone used it they were immediately lost.
Now I'm using WP7 (HD7) since October and it just works. It's fast and everything is intuitive and makes sense. And oddly enough I am only very rarely missing some advanced features. For example, I thought I'd be crippled without tethering, but as it turns out I am using my laptop via tethering much less when I'm travelling because the mobile browser and mobile apps on WP7 are so much better than any previous mobile browsers I'd used, so I'm more likely to use it rather than just getting frustrated and dragging out the laptop to use the "proper" browser. The great WP7 keyboard has a lot to do with this.
And if I lend my phone to someone else so they can make a call or check their email or whatever, they can use it! WP7 passes the idiot test! I would actually get this phone for my father!
A few days ago I met a techy friend who's a nokia die-hard, he had just purchased the N8. We swapped phones for half an hour to test them out, and the look on his face afterwards was proof enough that MS is on to something. My initial impression of the N8 software was that Nokia hasn't changed their OS since 1999. There was an impressive list of features for sure, if you could find them, as the menu system and shortcuts confused the hell out of me. And fonts were tiny everywhere. Maybe I'm just spoiled by WP7 now, but the experience of using the N8 was dreadful.
TLDR; You can compare a list of features as much as you like to see which is best; but you have to experience it to appreciate it. And WP7 seems to have the edge in this regard at the moment, even above iOS and Android.

"over saturation and color banding", I have no idea what you are talking about. I have had the focus for a week now and the screen is amazing. I don't even use my laptop any longer, just IE on the Focus. I was an HTC advocate for years (8125, 8525, FUZE) and switched to the Focus after careful consideration and will never look back. I have heard these criticisms of the screen and quite frankly don't see any of it. Am I just lucky? I have been to three ATT stores and played with 3 different Focus's before buying and did not experience these screen issues.

the reviews I've read, had the screen as the "worst" of the wp7 phones, but due to bigger color range of wp7, the screen looked better than the hd2. Being the worst of the wp7 phones, is like saying the worst between a lcd, a plasma, and a dlp t.v. They are all perfectly acceptable, some people like lcd, some like plasma, I like dlp because it looks better for sports.
As far as the dvp begin better than the hd7, what are you basing this on? Hardly anyone has been able to get their hands on one. You can't go to a store and try it out since its only coming through dell and MS.
HD7 has a bigger screen, and more RAM.
Hell, even engadget can't get a review out because their demo units keep breaking...
We get it, you hate the hd7, but I don't think the dvp is any better.

I used to be one of the android tools blindly mocking WP7, it just looked... I don't know... bland. I wanted nothing to do with it. I always have at least 8 phones, new and old I like to tinker with both hardware and software. I found a guy on craigslist who wanted a behold 2 for his HD7.... I thought it was a joke... I mean he was hell-bent on the behold 2 so I figured "what the hell?" I dug up that sad excuse for a phone that I'd used for about 3 hours and called him up. He was so excited and dropped that phone on me like it was an envelope of anthrax. I figured I'd make a quick upgrade as I'd seen them going for G2s and MT4gs all over the place so I posted it. I got that mytouch 4g... screen felt tiny and the OS was just too slow... I'd used WP7 for less than 2 days and in that time I'd become an addict without even knowing I liked it. The speed, the quality of the UI, the social integration, just everything was so perfect for me... I quickly got rid of that MT4g for an unlocked Focus and since then have obtained every US released WP7 device and 2 of each the venue pro and the focus. The only android device I have remaining is a streak which is pretty much used exclusively for angry birds. I love the trade-off.
They're heavily discounted on the resale market here in Canada.

from a phone perspective, i would say that i am a general user with power knowledge. given that, windows phone is perfect for me. after 6.5 where i had to mod it to death, i am happy to just have a phone that caters to my needs and does it well. i know there are still things missing, but what is missing, i rarely used it on wm6.5 anyways, so it hasn't bothered me all too much. and no, this doesn't mean i don't want updates, i want them, especially as it enhances user experience (e.g. faster performance, HTML5, etc), but i am content with what i got as well. also, i quite like the casual gaming perspective and i have an xbox gold subscription, so it was more than obvious that getting it together was only right, that and i use live services quite a bit, so really it all just went together.
but from a developer point of view, i have been doing C# for the last year at work, so it was also only right that i got a windows phone and began utilising my skills for it. i haven't created anything final yet, but i've looked into things and began stuffing around my it in the emulator. so yea, all in all, more because i already work with a lot of MS products, it is only right to have it married all together via windows phone.
That and Australia has SO many iPhone sheep, i didn't want to be one, and Android isn't all that appealing because it reminds me too much of the management i had to do for WM6.5. And no, neither iPhone or Android are bad units, i know how to use them both, and they definitely have things over WP, but not enough to make me say that i need it over WP.
I wanted to be on the ground floor of an OS and after having a mobile rep pull a demo hd7 from re back on launch day, I was sold in about 10 minutes. I had never used a phone so smooth out of the box. Tried the vibrant and there was no the fluidity I was looking for.
As a winmo user for several years, it is nice to hav AP hone that just works where I can play withmy phone instead of constantly flashing and tweaking it.

I always have at least 8 phones, new and old I like to tinker with both hardware and software. I found a guy on craigslist who wanted a behold 2 for his HD7.... I thought it was a joke... I mean he was hell-bent on the behold 2 so I figured "what the hell?" I dug up that sad excuse for a phone that I'd used for about 3 hours and called him up. He was so excited and dropped that phone on me like it was an envelope of anthrax. I figured I'd make a quick upgrade as I'd seen them going for G2s and MT4gs all over the place so I posted it. I got that mytouch 4g... screen felt tiny and the OS was just too slow... I'd used WP7 for less than 2 days and in that time I'd become an addict without even knowing I liked it. The speed, the quality of the UI, the social integration, just everything was so perfect for me... I quickly got rid of that MT4g for an unlocked Focus and since then have obtained every US released WP7 device and 2 of each the venue pro and the focus. The only android device I have remaining is a streak which is pretty much used exclusively for angry birds. I love the trade-off.

The appearance. I love the look of the UI and tried a couple Metro themes on WinMo and loved it. The whole UI is the only thing that grabbed me. But I also thought it was MS's iPhone...meaning something the huge company was going to do to compete with iPhone. That also meant, to me, superior quality.
But while I was trying Metro themes, I was keeping up with HD3 hardware rumors and the rumored specs, which turned out to be completely false, were very impressive and I just had to have an HD3.

i hope you realise that it was merely a design created by NAK. NAK create several concept phones with concept specs. they were never intended to be any more than that. when i first saw it, i was like... that would be pretty sweet, but seeing NAK logo, it was clear that it was just a concept phone.

LOL...hehe a lot of people made me aware of that over the few months before the real HD7 was released. I still kept hoping, though. Nevertheless, I was glad to get the real phone, regardless of the lowered specs.
yea. even though i own a trophy and i know it's probably the lowest in all the devices as there is no stand out feature, i'm still happy with my device.
i bought the HD 7 just because its windows... but to my surprise MS have developed a great mobile os... i have been using MS since PPC2000, wincCE.... and it was buggy... WP7 works out of the box as a phone, pda and a smart phone.. i know ppl will say dont have multitasking, cut and paste but to me its working very well till now....
I gave a little consideration to a Focus lately because I will be going over to AT&T within a month, but I'm just not too keen on Sammy quality lately. They had some big issue with a number of their phones and I'm wanting to avoid them. Too damn bad Dell doesn't put their WP7 phone out to the carriers to sell.
I started to use smartphone since O2 Xphone II. Moving to WM5, WM6, WM6.1 and jump over to BlackBerry due to the feature of push mail and social matter. I come back to WP7 after a year and am a happy user of WP7 now.

I had an original HTC Touch back in the day. It was awful. Then I switched back to a dumphone, the LG Voyager. Good little device, but the hardware broke after a year and a bit. So we upgraded. My wife got an iPhone, and there was nothing really that appealed to me. So I went with the Omnia 2. I knew winmo from before, and liked the look of it. But 6.5 proved to be the same frustrating experience as the HTC Touch (although I know most of the problems were due to bloatware from Samsung). I'm not profficient enough to flash, so I put up with it until I reached critical mass. I liked how my wife's iPhone "just worked". But I find iPhones themselves boring. Just rows of boxes. So I looked into Android, and found out it's the same as winmo (clutter, memory issues, fragmentation).
Then wp7 came out, I cautiously researched the hell out of it, and found that it was perfect for what I needed. it "just works", has xbox integration, office, etc. And for some reason I just love the look of it. I get so mystified when people say things like "boring dumb tiles" or "ulgy ass tiles". I don't know man, I just think wp7's look awesome. The tiles are great, it is the smoothest UI I've ever used, which to me, is bar none. Above all else on a smartpone, the UI should be front and centre.
So I went and got the Quantum (the only one available at the time), and was blown away by the hardware. I love heavy phones (feels like you've actually got something nice), and it's rigid and solid.
Anyways that's what got me here, and I expect to be a wp user for years.

WP7 did not impress me until I touched the real phone at AT&T store. Operations are so fluid and the live tiles presents more than I expected.
I'm just curious- I just sold my E4GT for an iPhone 4S- as to what your opinions are! This will be my first iPhone, I've only had android for smartphones (well Win6.1 for a few months). (although the E4GT is still my favorite phone ever).
I know this sounds like a "I'm leaving" thread, but it isn't meant to be. Just wondering what people may like about the iPhone vs. this phone, and what they hate! For me, I'm looking forward to the battery life, and the retina display, but will miss google nav, gtalk, gmail app, the notifications, etc.
If there's anyone who has both these phones, and could give some insight, please chime in.
There's a good chance I'll be back, since I change out phones every 6 months (and I got an iPhone because I've never used that OS before, so I'm curious), but I may try Win7 mobile before coming back to android as well.
On a side note, if everyone is really just hating on this thread, and I was an idiot for creating it and causing drama, I will just close it. Sorry all, was just really curious, not trying to create anything!!
My girlfriend has the iPhone, and she loves it. You'll instantly find that without jailbreak, you really can't customize the phone. For 80% of folks that's fine, very similar to the WinPhone7 experience, but you wouldn't be on XDA if you want to keep your phone stock
I will say that the application quality is better on iOS devices, seems like developers put a little more polish into them.
I'm currently in the same dilemma... Mainly because of apps. A lot of apps on iOS either take too long, or don't get released on Android at all. -Yes we have probably almost the same amount of apps on Android as on iOS, but not quality apps. Besides, for me as a startup app developer, iOS is better for business I was waiting for the SGS III, but was disappointed. Would have gotten the One X, if sprint imo wouldn't have uglyfied it. So now I'm waiting for the new iPhone, and hopefully it won't be an iPhone 4SS. Then I might consider switching too.

I think whosdaman (Korey) just came back to the E4GT from an iPhone and he has also had the OG Epic I am sure you can get some feedback from him all around.
I havent had the chance to use one but I put it to most people like this. If you've bought into one system why switch? If you really haven't and you like the other then don't let any stop you from having it your way.

I will definitely be jailbreaking the iPhone, I need my wifi-tether haha! Yea I'm excited for the applications, there are so much more on there. What's nice is that EA and Gameloft have a lot of sales, so all the games can be had for $0.99, if you wait for the right time (although still can't beat the market's $0.10 appsale).

Their battery is about the same for me but the iPhone 4s has battery on sleep mode/ standby but the E4GT has better battery while in use but by the end of the day their battery drainage is about the same. Camera seems better on the E4GT maybe it's just the screen. Seriously though it's whatever floats your boat. You like massive apps, buying accessories and just want a simple phone then stick to the iPhone, for everything else E4GT is better in my opinion I hate the size of the iPhone screen and it gets boring after 2 days.

Honestly, I love the learning process of new phones, which is why I switch so often. I still have not had a Motorola or Apple smartphone ever, so those were next on my list. I went from the Samsung Instinct to HTC Diamond to HTC Hero, to Epic 4G to E4GT, and now iPhone 4S.
I have put a lot of effort into android, but I can always come back. Plus I will admit, that I will probably spend less time on forums in general (still will be on XDA a bit) since you can't customize the iPhone as much. That was another key aspect of getting a phone like the iPhone....I will have more time to study for the GMATs instead of being drawn to all these amazing devs and their work!
I don't have an iPhone but I do have an ipad 3 and it was excruciatingly painful not having jb
And I did start slight theming for it (I just spent around 3 hours)
But **** is so complicated in theming and the file system is stupidly complicated

I freaking hated jailbreaking the iPhone(on the 3gs days), everything stops working like Cydia when a new update/OS is available then you have to jailbreak all over again and spend so much time bringing everything back, it's one of the few updates I dont ever look forward to because of the hassle. My girl has my iPhone 4s now it had nothing to offer me that my E4GT couldn't do

My wife and I both used to have original Evo's and about 6 months ago I went to the e4gt, and she went with the iPhone 4s. We frequently use each others phones and we both have likes and dislikes. Here are some of our big complaints:
Most of these are the obvious *****es that everyone has...
No 4G
Small screen
No back button
No external storage
Your clueless friends act like you finally decided to get a smartphone.
Positives are:
Camera is much better
High quality look and feel. (The brushed aluminum is a nice touch)
Siri is really cool. (I have tried the leaked S voice app, and I don't think we will see anything that comes close to Siri in the next couple of years)
The iOS is very polished. The cliche is true, "it just works"...
Manufacturers of other products (home or mobile audio mainly) gear everything towards iPhone.
I personally wouldn't go to an iPhone, but I like tinkering and customizing. My wife just wants stability, excellent camera, and good battery life. I definitely see the attraction of both devices. They both have their positives and negatives, it just comes down to preference. Have fun!

Yep when you try and jailbreak, that's when you realize it's not as straightforward as you'd like.
I am waiting for the new iPhone as well, as long as it has a larger screen, LTE, and maybe starting at 32gb (I wish!)
Yeah I have both and iPhone is for people who don't do a lot with their phone. Your paying sprint 10 dollars extra and you get slow 3g. And the screen is so small.
But it is a great phone. Maybe if it were bigger and had lte maybe but sprint 3g is horrible. If your on wifi its OK.
Pure ICS only
You will curse the screen for being so tiny on a daily basis.

My sister has an iPhone and I just jailbroke it for her yesterday. It's amazing how you can customize it with Jailbreaking... I made her phone look like the SII haha. But I still prefer Android because you can customize more even compared to jailbroken iPhones, and jailbreaking isn't completely stable. I'd say that custom ROMs on our phone are in general (not like nightly builds, but regular ROMs) are more stable than jailbroken features on iPhones. I personally don't like the shape of the iPhone or the small screen. Siri also isn't anything special IMO because no one ever ends up using it... just something to brag with. Like I seriously haven't met anyone who used Siri on a daily basis for functionality. To be honest, it's faster looking at a weather widget or opening a weather app than telling Siri to get the weather anyways.

How is it a zillion clicks lol. The only one click root for the E4GT I have seen once the app is running, its one click. The auto rooter was never advertised as a one click if thats what you mean. Maybe something else back in the EG30 days but i cam just before EK02 went ota.
I thought about getting an iphone but several things turned me off about it. First the hardware feels dated and screen seems small compared to this phone. Second in order to do anything with the files on the phone you have to use a software interface of some sort. For example you cant just plug into any pc, xfer files then unplug, you need itunes. Finally it just feels like a dumbed down content delivery device to me. Android feels and functions like a computer and I like that. I do understand how the simplicity of iphone would appeal to many but its just not for me. I also like being a bit different and popping down my S2 on the table with all my friends iphones at the restaurant or bar.

My job provided me with an iPhone and I use the E4GT personally.
The iPhone "just works"...but thats it...Its a no thrills phone that just works.
I personally love my E4GT but it takes much tweaking to make it yours.
I will admit. SIRI is awesome but i feel like its just a gimmick for the "Lazy" person who doesn't want to take the few extra steps to do what SIRI does for you.
It is a learning curve but in the end, it really is up to the person and their preference.
I had both, sold the iPhone. I will never own another apple device. The best thing about android is that its open source. That is how things should be. The iPhone was too small, not customizable, and the majority of the apps are paid apps. Also, downloads took FOREVER! I also tried a Galaxy Nexus and sold it this morning. Im sticking with the E4GT until something freaking spectacular pops up. My main things about the E4GT that keep me here: Processor is fast, screen looks fantastic, camera is badass, and the roms are plentiful.
I owned iPhones for years, the biggest deal breaker by far is the tiny screen size. Buy even if it was a larger screen I would never ever be able to go back.
I do see how it is better for average users who just want something that is easy and works out of the box
