Hey guys I saw over in the cdma forum that they managed to overclock the hero. Is it possible to move that hack over to the GSM hero or no?
if your phone is rooted and running a 1.5 based rom you can overclock.
If your rooted and running a 2.1 based rom then at the moment you can't overclock but you can still underclock (as the Kernal overrides the ability to overclock)
Very cool find. I wonder too, if the hack can be ported to the GSM Hero. They both run very similar processors, after all.
It's very possible on 1.5, but for 2.1 we need the kernel sources.
So lenny your saying if I apply the kernel patch over a 1.5 rom it'll work? just like that? seems way too easy
If your running a rooted 1.5 rom then all you need to do is download overclock widget from the market.
It is that simple yes.

That doesn't overclock. You can just tell it to run full capacity.
edit: correct me if i'm wrong
Yes i belive your correct, we need to apply the patch to the 1.5 kernel source recompile sign and flash if I am correct
I'm going to try it.

Please report back, i'm very interrested
I'm gonna give it a go as well
To bad the official 2.1 release will come out soon. Still i'm so excited over this
when we get the kernel source for 2.1 it should work for that too, I would say
I thought the kernel level overclock for the hero turned out not to work?
If we are talking about the one that allegedly got to run at 660mhz?
they're putting out roms that run at 710 over in the cdma forum. there saying they can max it out to 750 ish though.

ive already started porting drivers from .29 to .27 for the gsm hero as i did for the cdma hero. ive been busy for a while now trying to get overclocking to work. now that me and phh have gotten the ugly part out of the way and its working. i can say for sure that it can easily be ported to the gsm hero. im finishing up rewriting it and cleaning it up now. but once im finished ill try and get back on porting .29 drivers to .27 for the gsm hero. so far i have all but camera working on the cdma hero in eclair with .27. i know no camera is a big drag down. but hey its better then hardly anything with .27

Can anybody compile a kernel patch to overclock the htc hero on 1.5?
I currently have a hero and my gf just got the EVO and the battery life is pretty rough on it of course like we all know but i just flashed an under-volt kernal and it seems to work very well, is this possible yet for the EVO? Here are the links below about the topic

AFAIK, most of the kernals we already have available undervolt the CPU.
okay, sorry im a noob to the EVO, as of yet i dont own one, i have a very good undestanding how ever thing works with my hero. So like the latest Fresh Rom for the EVO, has undervolt?

Fresh Rom is a ROM, not a kernel. The kernel that comes with Fresh Rom by default is the stock HTC kernel which has no undervolting. You have to flash an alternate kernel after you flash the ROM which will allow undervolting.
There are a few kernels from which to choose from available here.

There are several threads in her in the dev section here with various kernels for the hero. I use Damage Control 3.2.3 ROM and therefore use a kernel from the developers there. However there is another thread (not ROM related per-se) that goes deeper into the different kernels that are available and being worked on. If you prefer another ROM search those threads... Since the release of the complete source code recently several dev's are tweaking the kernels to integrate with their ROM's.
Seek and yee shall find... (If you go to the DamageControl link, Look for info on post #2. You will have to scroll a bit because it's a beast as is the size of the thread.
I think Baked Snack ROM does the most undervolting. He said he has undervolted it so low with stability.
That ROM does wonders to your battery... let me just say that.
Ok peeps! It's time someone stepped up and posted a thread that addresses the most critical of (the technically inclined) humanity's issues:
ROMS - From the bunch out there, which one is your favorite and why?
I'll start this poll by posting the ones available in the Android Development forum. If none apply, please post what you are using and why.
Not sure if we can change polls after they started so probably can't add any options after the initial post, but suggestions might make it into a next edition. For now I'll post 20 ROMS
Let's get our 'droid on people!
Bumping back to top so more people can see the poll. Would be great if some admin could sticky this poll for the duration so we could get more participants and maybe get a better sense of what the community is doing / using.
Been trying out a few ROMs lately, though currently happy with Froyo DeLite, it's pretty much the stock Froyo release by HTC just with root and no new hboot, just what i was looking for.
I'm running this one: [ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N by ieftm. Which one is it in your list?

LOL... When preparing this poll I had counted 20 ROMs. When I finished filling out the forms, I had 19 and an open space and couldn't figure out what was missing so I used the 20th spot and filled it in with "others". Guess now I know which one I forgot
Just vote for others and leave your comment. Thanks for commenting and sorry to all that I messed this up by forgetting that ROM

Which ROM did you most like up till now?
Personaly, so far I have to say I liked LeeDroid Mod and Cyanogen. If I had to choose I would be hard pressed. But despite that I am still stuck on a Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo).
For me, I love the purity and simplicity of a non-sense ui. Hence my passion for Cyanogen (amongst the non-sense mods). But I must confess that I miss Friendstream, and clock / weather widget and animations, and also the HTC calendar. This brings me back to LeeDroid. If I were somehow able to get these 3 things on a Cyanogen Mod, I'd be in trouble because then I'd have to choose one of them !
Neophyte
I like Sense. It's the only phone skin I've come across that I think adds something to the phone UI.
I've tried Dj Droid and Leedroid, and all the Neophyte ROMs. I've stuck with the latter as they're really quick, seem totally stable and basically I can't find anything wrong with them!

I think there are 2 NeoPhyTe ROMs out there, right? NexTSense and NeoPhyTe ROM. Which one do you prefer?
I'm confused between so many ROMs and so many changes. What I want is one rooted but first of all STABLE (without any bugs) ROM. I don't need nothing special added or removed from official one.
If someone can suggest the one - I would be thankfull.
Me too which one, and especially how to ROOT for lamers like us?

Please note this isn't a poll to figure out which ROM is king! No, it's just intended to give us a sense of what's going on in the community and what people like and are looking for so that hopefully, new developers can take that info and use it, either tweaking their existing ROM, or making new ones based on the ones people most like, or even creating something that is 180º different and goes in another direction.

Same as above for the first part of your post. Check "unrevoked" for the rest.
I've always had Modaco roms for my Android handsets (T-Mobile Pulse, HTC Hero & then Desire). They have always been extremely stable. For a close-to-stock 2.1 Sense (Eclair) ROM, Modaco r3.1 was the best for me!
I tried LeeDroid Mod 1.3a (to try out Froyo) and haven't looked back. I've decided not to update to any of the other versions (1.5, 1.6, 1.7 etc) as everything works perfectly for me!
Unless there's a significant reason to update (specifically battery life), then I'm staying on LeeDroid 1.3a.

yeah man, that rom rox
the most stock, complete, functional rooted rom i've encountered so far.
[ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N
I have tried a lot of them and now I´m using Defrost 2.5a, I know it´s not based on 2.09 Froyo but I want to try and leave Sense Ui once and for all.
Qudrant just got me 1441 and Linpack around 39-40 all the time.
I´m gonna install that Launcher Pro Plus and Beautiful Widgets for the weather and such.
If I wanted to go back to Sense, I would choose my fellow spaniard Neophyte´s 1.4a or 2.1b (both rock).
Cheers

Das que é bem verdade que os tugas andam por toda a parte!!!
I tried it yesterday and actually was impressed with it, but still not my cup o' tea. Still, I would say yeah, one of the best.
Will they be able to put the drivers for the video camera etc into the ROMS now, or the hydra kernels? I remeber hearing that they needed the source to be able to do this?
new hydra kernels were released the day the source came out, everything works in them so far that I have found.
Wait, so I can upgrad to Froyo, install Sky Raider and a custom overclocked kernel and still have video camera?
if u so desire. yes.
Froyo source does not contain ANY proprietary drivers.
I think he meant kernel source...
froyo Source.
No... He ment froyo source code, not just the kernel. see the attached link Unless i completely read this wrong...

i think...
i remember reading a while ago when we had like skyraider 1.9 that they needed the info from the 2.2 ota to make camera work. i dont think he knows that he needs the new radio. although i think you guys already stated it above. you just need the the new radio but now that unrevoked forever is out you dont need to unroot bro. there is a thread topic very easy good luck
I think what it boils down to is the question "Will we be seeing some cool roms soon?"

So far I have tried unrEVOked and AVA-FROYO V10.
unrEVOked is little bit behind on latest kernels and is stuffed with Sprint garbage. It did have great battery life with 4G and WiFi enabled (12 hours for me).
AVA-FROYO V10 was OK, very little Sprint crap... but battery life on it was extremely unpredictable (from 4 hours to 12 with cell standby chewing up most).
Unfortunately the latest radio update messed it up and now I need to reflash everything, so might as well look at other roots.

I didn't have the best luck with AVA V10, but V9 has incredible battery life. Here is a link:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/kqCqyssL/Ava_Roms.html
Whichever ROM you download, you can open the zip (don't extract), go to system>apps and delete any apks you don't want it to install when you flash it. Of course, make sure you know what apks you are removing first so you don't get problems later and have to end up re-downloading/re-flashing your phone.
unrEVOked is not a ROM, nor a kernel, and has nothing to do with battery life. Other than the superuser app showing up, it should not affect anything at all. It's a rooting process, specifically intended to unlock your NAND (S-Off, visible in the bootloader).
Popular ROM options are Fresh, MIUI, CyanogenMod. Fresh has fully working WiMax. CM is close. Don't know about MIUI, but it's probably not packing working 4G. None of them have any of the Sprint apps by default.
You can bake your own Fresh ROM with whatever you want included. CM doesn't even include the Google Apps by default (you can add them easily), so it's even trimmer.
Once you are fully rooted, and familiar with the nandroid backup process (and Titanium Backup), you can switch between ROMs fairly easily and make your own decisions.
To get started, root and then flash Fresh. Actually, wait a few days (but don't accept the current OTA if you haven't already), and install Fresh once it's been updated. Because it's based on stock with Sense, you can probably flash without clearing your data (DO clear your caches) and get off to a quick start.
Yeah, I am still learning this rooting process. I have very little time available for playing around a bit and no way in hell am I going to use time of my devs in the office. Hence me doing it the lazy way - asking you which ROM is the best for my needs and then flashing and forgetting it.
BTW, thanks for the advice so far. Saving me a lot of time!
MYNs is popular or if you want a stock one, I suggest looking at the ReEngineered Stock ROM that aamikam made. He spent alot of time fixing up the apks so that they are smaller in size and speeds up the ROM.
i would just find a rom that you like and run with it. the rom itself shouldn't make THAT much difference. from what i have seen, its your kernel that really makes the difference in batter-life and performance. Most of the bloat-ware in the majority of these roms can be removed pretty easily.
Myn has some great stuff for ROMS. Ava V10 (if you have bad battery, try a different kernel)
Here are my 3 fav Kernels:
Hero's Laptop Kernel (all i have to say is WOW)
Net's 4.2 or 4.1
King's CFS
ROMs:
Sense: Calk's or Myn's or for a pure stock feel try ReEngineered 3.70.651.1.
AOSP: Cyanogen Mod (No Contest)
Kernels:
I always stick with Stock on all the ROMs I have tried.
Have fun flashing man.
Try Azael X its very fast very little no bloat and stable 4G plus battery life is great he will update to 3.70 soon he's working on it now Rick is very picky about letting his roms out with bugs so he tests and tests before release
