[Q] Better WIFI hotspot/tether app? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using the tether/wifi app that comes with 2.2 vanilla rom, it sort of sucks, there's no way of adjusting ip range/address and DHCP etc.
The one from HTC sense has a better interface, just wondering if there's another app out there that has more functions in the hotspot app?

[Q] Best Froyo ROM for PPTP VPN on Dinc?

What its says! I am frustrated by not being able to connect to a pptp VPN, or if rarely connected, not being able to pass data using 3G. Using WiFi, it works perfectly.
I otherwise like the stock Froyo, and would not want to lose any stuff if possible.

[Q] What VPN solution is best/guaranteed to work

I have 2 old PIX firewalls I can use, or I could could use OpenVPN inside WRT, or anything. I have nothing setup yet.
What's the easiest VPN for the EVO to hook to?
I'm running unrooted 2.2.
There is no PIX or OpenVPN support in Android. If you root and download "VPN Connections" you can connect to a PIX or OpenVPN server. I have connected to each. Make sure to read through the bug reports. The version I was using had a routing problem that had to be corrected in vpnc-script.
I've managed to get my evo to connect a winxp pro box set up as a pptp vpn server. but only if I disable encryption on the evo. which kind of defeats the purpose.
Basically, android VPN support is spotty at best. There is an epically long google code thread on the subject.
For the time being setting up an ssh server and using connectbot seems to the best way to securely access remote networks. It's far from perfect but it's the best solution I've seen.
Some people have reported vpn success using custom roms. But they are the exception. And setting up an ssh server is probably easier than tweaking a custom rom, IMHO.
This conversation is over my head, but Logmein Ignition owns my soul.
Thanks everyone.
I might have to root my EVO again(last one was rooted, but had to get a new EVO through warantee)

Anyone get the built in wireless hotspot working?

I have a rooted Droid Incredible running Cyanogen 7. I have never been able to get the built in wireless hotspot functioning even when I was running Cyanogen 6. Here is what is happening:
I can turn on the wireless hotspot feature and my laptop is able to see the SSID. When I try to connect the connection is unsuccessful. It looks like it it hanging at obtaining an IP address.
I was able to get the Wireless Tether app from the market to work but when I use it I have to turn it on once then turn it off then turn it on once again in order to be able to connect to the SSID. The other issue is that when I activate it my notification bar shows the Wireless Tether connection active as well as an icon for the built in wireless tethering. Its not a big deal but it clutters my notification bar and it annoys me.
Can someone give me some help getting my build in wireless tethering working?
The problem with the built in tether is once you go over a certain limit verizon will start charging you, so I would recommend using the free tether app man.

What would be the difference between wireless tether app and the wireless tether built in to cm7? Why would Verizon charge for one but not the other?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Because Verizon gets notified when you use the built-in tether, if you use the one on the market they will beverages know.
I stopped using cm7 because of that same tether issue, but for me the internet wouldn't work at all, my pc would connect to the "android tether" just fine, but no internet feed.

As I understand it the only way you would be charged is if you're using Verizon's tethering app, which is separate from the built in tethering in CM7.
Yes, this is true, but even with that my pc and 360 would connect with it, but still no internet. But with any other Rom (stock included) it would work beautifully!!!!!

I noticed this for the first time today with CM7 which I installed on Friday. Will have yo try the new final to see if the wireless tether works. Would be very disappointed if it doesn't work! I don't want to go back to Virtuous.

I don't really use it but I tested it and it works fine for me.
I guess I don't really mind using the wireless tether app from the market but there are issues.
1. How do you stop both icons from showing in the notification tray?
2. How do you stop the app from showing updates with the new market? The newest versions don't work on the incredible.

[Q] Wi-Fi Direct?

Hi everybody, is there any possibility to use Samsung's technology called 'Wi-Fi Direct' on DHD? Or is there any alternatives for DHD (seems to me very useful feature because sharing Wi-Fi at home from laptop)
I am confused... What do you mean by WiFi direct? DHD has already a WiFi hotspot capabilities and usb tethering for internet sharing. All u need is to root your dhd or install a custom ROM and it will be enabled.
Hope that helps.

Well i think what the OP is talking about is ability to share files using Wifi between two devices like Samsung Galaxy S devices can. Its essentially similar to bluetooth but lot faster.

[Q] App Default

Any way to change Default Tethering app? Im trying to use this app called remote viewfinder for a Samsung Digital camera(App enables you to see what your camera sees and you can take a picture etc...) and when I run the app it tries to use the Sprint Hotspot App which currently doesn't work in my Rom at this moment.... But my Wifi tethering app seems to work... I wanted to change the default so that it uses WIFI tethering and Not sprint Hotspot.
Currently using Calukin Rom latest version
