02 XDA Exec in the UK

...does anyone know if and when 02 are going to release a new ROM for the Exec?
I've had mine running now for a while with the Blackberry Connect software and it's not what you call stable. The service stops for no reason, or hangs or simply wont connect, I have to reset frequently.
I used an 02 Mini-S for a while and that was rock solid... shame the Exec isn't.

Thats the million dollar question.
Various posts about this with no answer.
I emailed O2 a week or 2 ago asking the very same thing. I did get an answer which basically said they don't know with no plans. O2 Cust service said they usually know a few months in advance but haven't heard anything.

...our company got them just as they'd released the Blackberry Connect update, got that hot off the press straight from 02.
It's not such a bad piece of kit, the only wobbles I have are with the BB functionality and the phone... but then again as I said previously, the Mini-S was faultless...

Guess your company should of pressured O2 into confirm/agreeing upgrade commitment contract etc...
Sorry, I wished O2 were better ie they release some great phones/PDA devices but still think of them as 12 month contract phones. Don't see the big picture.
Company I work for (one of the big banks in the UK) where trialing the XDA EXEC but couldn't really get what they wanted from O2.
Shame as all IT guys love the machine - just software was a bit pants.

...feel enclined to agree... it would have been useful to be able to browse the web on them, but they tell us as we're on a Blackberry tariff Internet access is unavailable... tried several technical work arounds to no avail.
Odd really, previously we had some T-Mobile MDAIII's with Blackberry functionality and we could browse the web with them quite well.
We were hoping for some kind of Terminal Services remote control of our services over a VPN of some description with the Exec..but the lack of Internet access on them put a stop to that.

I don't think, this is a problem specifically with the O2 company. I beleive the entire HTC Universal device provider whether O2, IMate, TMobile, QTEK, etc... HAS NO PLANS OF RELEASING ANY ROM UPDATE FROM NOW ON. Why? To them, our device is a thing of the past. They are concentrating more on their current NEW or UPCOMING devices.

...I'll not be too impressed if thats the case. I think the latest 02 device is the Orbit, looks ok, only seen it on the website though.

We decided to scrap the BlackBerries in favour of Mini S and Execs. That effectively brings in Exchange Push E-mail synchronisation, Phone Service and Internet access as well... not to say you can install GPS Sat Nav on them and other good things.
Granted, I had to understand how to make a Certificate Based Authentication to comply to the Corporate Policy, and having strong password is a real pain in the proverbial -- but still it beats all devices.
My only grudge against Exec is not so much free RAM; as a result Navigon MN|5 requires a reboot beforehand if you're going somewhere far - to prevent nasty surprises during the trip (esp. considering the goddam strong password which you can't enter with your finger...)

... Which is really SHAME, because there are so far NO "New" or "Upcoming" Phone Edition devices with VGA screen... Universal is one of a kind. Granted there are VGA devices with GPS - but no phone; or nice phones with GPS - but only QVGA or even 240*240 screen.
We've paid shedload of money and... once again guys, tough, go buy another one. ARRRRGHHH!!!!

I guess during the Christmas holidays I'll just go and try one of the ROMs that can be found here - got nothing to lose and all to gain, and a good experience of flashing ROMs on previous XDA II Himalaya.
If these hold Push E-mail updates, screw the O2 updates altogether.

facebook places?

can someone modify the facebook app to allow the places function to work in south africa?
it says its not available. but on facebook for bb,. places works in s.a?

Same here. Possibly in the new version. IDK about modifying.

You really would have to wait.
The last time I tried "Places" for my country on my HTC, it was unavailable, but BB and iPhone users could do it.
As of today (or actually, the middle of last month), apparently now all smartphone users in Singapore (not here though ) are able to use Facebook "Places".
I'm not sure how reliable any of this information is, but apparently there are a lot of factors to consider when using places, such as your phone model, and even your carrier - which apparently, relates to your ISP??
Apparently some carriers are recognized by Facebook, and some only after some updates from Facebook.

I think the best advice is to just be patient.
I can confirm that it works in Australia, Perth specifically.

Google Wallet for Australian Nexus Virgin Mobile

hello, i own a galaxy nexus GSM and i am on the australian carrier Virgin Mobile, i followed all the instructions to install wallet and set it up but it still comes up with a unsupported carrier popup, is there an issue? cheers.

I had some success getting it onto my phone. Here's what I did (Also note, I'll use Wallet Online when referring to the checkout system used to pay for stuff on the Play Store, and Google Wallet when referring to the mobile phone app)
Flashed the factory image of 4.1.1 (with Google Wallet support)
Rooted (Using the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit) and installed MarketEnabler and Titanium Backup
Unfroze / Defrosted Google Wallet in TB
Set ME to spoof T-Mobile (US)
Installed the updated version of Google Wallet
Before that (about two years ago now) I added my Visa Debit card to Wallet Online and have paid for lots of marketplace items.
When I was able to run Google Wallet, I added the debit card I had through Wallet Online. It asked me for a mailing address inside the US. I used my parents in-laws address (I don't think Google sends you anything, it seems to be for verification purposes) and the card added successfully.
Tonight I went to K-Mart and tried to buy a photo frame ($29 worth). It told me the card was declined and I needed to see the card issuer, so unless I'm doing something wrong, Google Wallet is a no-go when you add your own (Visa) cards.
I suggest trying the above to get Google Wallet on your phone in the first place, then (if you have the time) fiddle around with some settings, such as turning off root (in the Superuser app), unspoofing your mobile (something I haven't done yet, but I doubt it'll make a difference), adding a different type of card (such as a credit and not a debit card, or a card from MasterCard etc.) and even trying the Google Prepaid card (I have $10 on it, but I don't know if it'll work, as I only just tapped the icon to set it up)
I would really love to see this rolled out officially to other countries and not just the US. If Visa are now on board, surely Google should be able to flick a switch on their end (if it's that easy) and let us buy stuff with our phones?

Also if after you set it to T-Mobile (US) you notice the rom you have hasn't got Google Wallet, you can just search for it in the Play store
Adding your debit card in that way wont work because the US address wont match the one Visa has for you ... I just used the Google Prepaid card up at coles and it worked fine, they looked at me strange though

Google wallet is somewhat pointless in Australia still as you can only use prepaid cards to add funds to use the NFC feature, I stick with my debit card.

well i got it to work guys! also i was talking about the latest verison of google wallet, 1.5, and now i have it working and linked to my debit card. i installed the modified version in the android development forums a few hoours ago, and works fine! yes please use market enabler because it may require you to use the t-mobile server durring activation. cheers! thanks for the helpguys!

Glad to hear you had some success. Can I ask if you've tried to pay for something yet? Your post says it works fine when linked to your debit card, but that could mean the app is working fine, or you can pay for stuff. Also, can we get a link to the development thread you referred to?

At first I wondered about that, because purchases are actually done through a virtual MasterCard (go into the Google Wallet app, edit an existing card and look at the "Via" field. Hit the ? to read more about it) but I guess if the charges are done via Wallet Online, then yeah they would cross-reference your details.
All Google has to do (as far as I can see) is just change the UI on their form to allow non-US locations. There must be some international card issuer BS to go through though, even though I can successfully buy anything I want online using PayPal or by entering in my card details directly.

I worded that wrong, adding your card is possible but when buying something it will fail ... that is because of the AVS that checks the cardholders billing address so unless it is a US card you're buggered

yes it works, i am curently in the city testing it out, i think the issue is that either my debit card details are wrong or there is an issue with my actual bank, i still need to resolve, attemtped at startbuks swanston st melb and mcdonalds melbourne central shoping centre, whenever i tried it, it either declined it or it wont go through, any ideas? cheers.

the latest 1.5 version of google wallet allows us to use our own decit and credit cards. cheers.

make up your mind... first you say it works and then you say it doesn't.... Yes you can add your credit/debit card but no it will not work when you goto buy something, like i've already said

Interesting about the AVS system. What I wonder is, could someone use an address like 123 Fake Street, Melbourne, 30010 (note the additional 0 at the end) and hope that the AVS system matches the first four numbers, doesn't find anything for 30010 and ignores the final zero in the post code, thinking it's just useless extra data? That'd satisfy the AVS and meet the 5 digit zip code requirement for adding a card, if AVS only matches numerical data
Of course, I'm just hypothesizing here, and am not suggesting anyone does this, as it could be seen as exposing a weakness in AVS and you could have all sorts of people running your way.

Google wallet is not available for your device or mobile network with latest google wallet app direct from the play store on stock jellybean 4.1.1 yakju an jellybro cm10 custom rom on both Telstra an Vodafone networks with my unlocked gsm galaxy nexus, go figure I even tried market enabler lol, more importantly when will Australian galaxy nexus users be able to purchase songs from google music like US users.

I've tried various ways on my SGS3 (Telstra) and nothing has worked so far. AVS is definitely playing a role. I've got a US Unlocked virtual credit card, but not even that passes AVS checks even though one is issued with a US address when you get the card. Tried this with Hulu Plus and they're probably the most anal when it comes to AVS. Anyway, found a workaround to that problem, but I digress.
Another thing I reckon is that "Google" is not set up on Australian PayPass terminals as a registered merchant, hence why even the prepaid Google card with $10 fails. As with many, I see no reason why we cannot use Google Wallet [yet] down under. Oh well, my conventional debit/credit chipped cards work fast and well, albeit without the "whoah!" factor if I used my phone.

I'm wondering if Google is denying all foreign transactions for external cards using Google Wallet (but allowing the prepaid card), making it a combination of AVS and Wallet. Strange that they're denying one card but not another..
However your comment about the prepaid card failing is incorrect. On the way home the other night my wife and I stopped in at our local (rural) McDonalds and purchased two coffees. I paid for the lot using the $10 prepaid card and it worked fine. Only thing was, the lady behind the register had to run and grab a pen, as most "credit" transactions under $100 are usually PINned or PINless and rarely signed. But that's just me, you may be having difficulties for another reason.

You're correct. I failed to mention that I've only tried this at my local 7 Eleven. From what I've read, those who have reported it worked [more often than not], used it at McDonalds. Good on you though; I'd love to see it in action!

Per this article, folks at "Mashable" uncovered a working cell phone with a T-Mobile sim in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly meant to be a high-tech ad for the CW displaying live Tweets and crap like that. I was wondering if the inner parts were combined with another cheapo ABO Android phone, if this could be a working cell phone with 3G data and all? Or, if one could simply remove the T-Mobile sim and stick it in their GSM Nexus if they'd get working data/calls?
There are 1000 copies of the magazine scattered around LA and NY. I might try to search for one tomorrow when I'm in the city. If anyone sees one, picks it up, and sticks the sim in their GNex, let me know how it goes. Who knows how long the sim would be good for, or if it'll even work, but it might be worth trying, no?

Did you read the original Mashable article? You CAN make phone calls and use data on it. It's a real smartphone
It's probably using a prepaid TMo SIM with a month's worth of credit in it.

The 2 people in the Mashable vid were horrible! I was so angry listening to them talk.

It was only sent to subscribers, in the only two cities that "really matter", New York City and Los Angeles. Same as it was for that Esquire magazine e-ink cover and the CNN video ad which used a simple video player device with a small screen.
The CNN one was quickly hacked to play other videos. Wasn't much to do with the Esquire cover since it was made of fixed elements like a cheap LCD game toy.
The phone appears to be the guts of an Abo 810. Pretty junky little phone but what? It supports JAVA apps?
Why can't I have that on my Epic 4g? Would be nice to remotely access my printer's built in server from my phone but I can't because the phone OS built on JAVA doesn't have a full JRE, but apparently the Chinese came up with one.
I doubt much will be done with hacking those magazine phones with only 1,000 of them out there and likely the majority of them will get tossed in the trash within the next week or two.

Anyone heard of Visible (Verizon) Wireless?

Are there are any other Visible users on here? Visible is owned and operated by Verizon (it's not a MVNO). They are offering unlimited unthrottled data/talk/text/hotspot for $40/month without contract. I switched about 10 days ago. Speedtests are as high as 103Mbps! Got the deal to get the S9 for $408-$200 MasterCard they'll send in 6 weeks to equal $208. Service is exceptional and the S9 is factory unlocked. WiFi calling and Visual Voicemail work too. I'm trying the service, but I find that Visible seems to prevent the use of a VPN. (I use Private Internet Access.) T-Mobile doesn't have a problem with VPN so I'm not sure why Verizon's Visible does.

I'm using NordVPN with my S9 without issue. What VPN are you using?

I am looking to go with Visible, but need the VPN. I too have PIA. Are you using the PIA app or the OpenVPN app on your phone?

I have the PIA apk from the Google Play store. The Visible apk is the beta version, also from the Play store. I rebooted the phone after several package updates were delivered by Google this afternoon. And now PIA (updated 22 May) and Visible (updated 12 July) seem to be working together. So yeah, that's good news. Give Visible a try.

So I learned Visible is selling the ZTE R2 phone temporarily for ONLY $19 ($20.52 shipped) and I asked Customer Support if I could buy one for a backup phone since they don't offer insurance. I am using it on an S9 and if you understand it ONLY works on Verizon and there is no roaming you will do fine.
As an aside, I am trying to change the SIM Pin and require it at boot as an additional way to secure the phone. Visible will not, or cannot provide the default SIM Pin. Anyone know what it is?

I am going to give them a shot. I will be moving my GF from Meto. Metro is getting on my nerves. We cant swap the sim without them throwing a fit. Also, the store employes state we need to pay them 10 to swap the IMEI BS if you ask me. But Visible will let me turn in my OLD iPhone 5C to get credit for that free ZTE phone they are passing out. Looks like they will give you the phone no matter what. Will report back on how good the services are in Charlotte NC. I have Verizon should be a good comparison.

Visible works well in Central and Northern WI with the exception of Marathon County which has no native Verizon towers.

Thanks, can anyone try 1212 on there phone? I only have one more try before the phone locks and I need a new SIM from Visible. That means at least 24 hours without a phone.
