Some Explanation on the Deal with WP7 and MicroSD cards - Windows Phone 7 General

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/17/windows-phone-7s-microsd-mess-the-full-story-and-how-nokia-ca/
Enjoy the read. I think a few of us here said security was a main reason. I find it ironic that SD cards have been used so insecurely over the years that actually using them the way they were intended has been met with such outcry by users
I do think businesses will sort of love this, though

I have to admit that I'm surprised at how few devices support the secure features of SD cards..
I'd think alot of people forgot or didn't know that SD cards could be secured like that.
It's definitely a good read. Thanks for posting it.

How the security conscious business is going to like it if the device lacks on device encryption???????

Ues I read it but asdumed you were talking about storage encryption. The only two oses that make use of swcured sd cards is wp7 and symbian. Wp7 will prolly get that in the first or second update. When will android?

I never mentioned the Android, but I will make the same speculation in the next release.
And as for the encrypted exchange communication and attachment encryption - TouchDown for Android.
BTW, password protection != encryption

[Q] Memory Card

i am forced to use my 2gb memory card, since somehow my 8gb card doesn't work anymore, like if i was to put it in my phone it would freeze, or wouldn't show up in the sdcard settings, and when i put it in my sdcard adapter and put it in my comp, it still doesn't show up and my comp starts slowing down and freezes, but i'm planning on getting a new card for my aria(until the htc atrix comes out hehe) but will a 64gb card work on the aria or the highest is 32gb, cause if 64 will work it'll make my iTouch pretty much worthless, but even if a 32gb will work i'ma get rid of my iTouch
Max supported is 32.

Don't get Kingston cards unless marked being made by Japan. Just got a Taiwan make and boy... less than 1 MBps speeds on a class-4 card is pretty not awesome.

HTC is coming out with a comparable device.
Working for MCO, Kingston would mix and match where cards were made. Just because the 1st one out of the box was legit, didnt mean the 2nd was.
Backflip indeed was horrible but it opened me up to a new OS and now I love Android.
Im running a 32GB SDHC card, gave my girl my 8 and have a bowl of cards. None have given me issues on my phone with any of the ROMs. My GF has a Incredible and doesnt have any issues either.
Yes, this thread is worthless.
FYI, Google makes the Atrix...lol
Actually motorola makes the Atrix.seeing as it was out well before the Google buyout.

In any case, I thought the max was 16GB! So, no not worthless IMO.
I suggest you get a Sandisk on e-bay perhaps class 6 or 10 so you can run your ROM's cache and Davlink in there. I'm I right? eh? eh?

[Q] Micro SD self deleting files. What am I doing wrong?

I just bought a 32gb class 4 micro sd card and after formatting it via my desire Z, i keep on running into a really really wierd problem.
I would connect my phone to the computer and set it as disk drive and drag/drop a group of files in it (ie. playlist file or small ringtone files) and as soon as I eject it and unplug the cable from my phone, the files are suddenly gone again.
What am I screwing up and how do I fix this?
Is it possible that my format method is wrong? if so, can someone explain what's the best way to format the card properly.
Why did you even format it in the first place?? Don't fix what's not broken...
What OS are you using on your computer?
I usually format every card i get as a habit. Don't know why, I was just taught to do that and never really thought it would hurt.
I'm using Windows 7
Try format it from your computer to FAT32
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using XDA App
I've already done that a while back. it actually made the card read only when i put it on my phone.
I think you've got a defected micro sd mate

All SD cards, thumb drives, etc. are already formatted, usually FAT32, so you are wasting your time doing exactly what is already done. If you were to format to something besides FAT32, that would make sense.

Well, again, it's just a habit, but nothing wrong with it I believe. I waste maybe a few minutes doing a quick format.
But yeah, I'm sending the card back to the seller for an exchange so hopefully it's just bad luck. If not I'll have to spend more money on a better card eventhough this one is a Kingston class 4 which was unsettling....

Sprint Releasing Security Update that Cripples SGSIII

I knew it would come! Since im on T-Mobile, it won't effect me right away but:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2590...security_update_bye_bye_universal_search.html
Which takes away a basic core service that's been around before ISO even existed. Remember desktop search from Windows 95?
I COMPLETELY DEPEND on the global search mechanism on the Google widget because i keep everything sorted using keywords. I have over a thousand contacts separated by keywords, linked together with emails and pics (im in the building trade industry).
Google is known for their awesome search capabilities using keywords, how can they strip something like this away.
I need this search ability. The iphone is very tempting now.

Dude is a troll plain and simple. His replies betray his genuineness .
meanwhile, trolls aside, I really don't understand how Apple won the injunction with the overwhelming prior art of Google Desktop Search [released Oct 2004] and (I really dislike using this as an example of anything, but it applies) BonziBUDDY [released 1999].
to lesser extents, we have:
ISYS
- prototyped as "Homer" in 1987
- released in 1988
---- was actually a tool to search documents and databases on a private network, searched locally as well
Copernic Search
- released in 1996
---- web multi-search tool, local search functions added well before iPhone (I don't remember when though)
Microsoft Actors/Agents
- released originally as MS Bob in Mar 1995
Windows Desktop Search
- as of v4, included with WinVista, RTM Nov, 2006

BUT and that is a BIG BUT this LGOG is something I wouldnt have never expected from LG , not since the original LG 510 has there been a more stable and good working phone.

Blackberry seems to be shooting to be just good enough with this phone. Dual core processor, 1 gb RAM and a smaller screen by today's standards seem like this is the device they are testing the waters with when really they should go for broke. Realistically this could be their last hurrah.
Personally I want to see them succeed. I dont think i will ever buy another blackberry, but a third strong OS would keep all systems innovating at a very high rate instead of encouraging stagnation.

Hd2 was able to run ICS before most android devices at the time. The webos tablet and blackberry was also able to run android. Doesn't surprise me the bb10 will too. A smartphone these days no matter the stock OS can in some way run android. Even the iPhone could run android and has in the past

Look, you might think the hardware isn't all there. That isn't the big picture. Watch your mind explode. No iPhone, no Android as we know it, No widgets, no Windows 8, and to come full circle, no blackberry, no iPhone.
Android will die one day. Blackberry might die too. Analyst are already predicting the iPhone's doom. But, BB only gives us more. The ideas that blackberry comes up with will enhance the android phones. Competition brings innovation. I hope blackberry does great and brings timely updates too. Imagine if all the other os's updated like Apple. Don't think for a second blackberry didn't take note to our fragmentation. They have the same 2 phones worldwide for a reason.
And don't think for a second our brand loyalty its less fickle than it is. We will jump ship in drones. Blackberry might not be leading the pack now. But, now is very relative.
So, i agree with everyone.

The only level of encryption approved by pretty much every government worldwide for their secure communications. Blackberry will still have it's place in corporate and gov't settings for a while yet, but I don't see the mass appeal that they want and need to regain their once dominant position. They would have to do something more eye-popping than what they did.
On a somewhat different note, what are thoughts that some others have about upcoming platforms? Firefox OS, Tizen, Ubuntu, etc... I read that Samsung will be releasing Tizen phones in Q3.

Well see...I'm happy with the direction android is going in so far. if anything, since iOS doesn't seem to be encouraging innovation with that boring stagnant ui and features, I would like a good third player in the market whoever it may be to keep Google on its toes and android moving along. I agree with that sentiment. For the average person, blackberry is a known name so they'll give it a shot. And if the OS is smooth and understandable, they won't have any trouble flocking to it. And businesses will buy in bulk.

You hit it right there that people prefer comfort thats why (since rim gave people PLENTY of time to get comfortable with android lol) I don't think they'll FLOCK but I agree there will be people willing to give it a shot and yeah it could actually catch momentum so all we can do is wait and watch haha I'm excited to see how the mobile landscape looks by the end of this year since it changes so rapidly
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
I believe android will remain dominant for many years to come I see bb10 as more of a threat to wp8. BlackBerry has made it easy to port over android apps meaning they could easily out shine wp quickly when it comes to apps. I also believe people will defect from android also but not in droves android will remain dominant if only for the choices you can get their is a device out their that fits everyone's needs
Here is a question? Will we need to buy the app again? I assume so. Honestly, both phones are appealing.
There was a good article today about the demise of phones. It could be a great thing. If the losers leave and the leaders cut back we might see more stellar phones from less manufacturers. Lg won't make 30 different phones a year. So, the 5 they end up making might get faster updates.

storage space

is this what we really get from a 16gb phone? i just notice this..

That's all. It's [email protected]#king insane. And no apps2sd without rooting. More insane. Google and Samsung must realise that such a stupid decision will scare developers away. There must be more that 30 games on the Play Store that require 1gig now. Not only that either. Spotify do not allow you to save off line playlists to the sd card!
I filled my internal memory in 10 days!!
Look on the bright side. The Windows Surface 64gig only lets you use about 24! (don't quote me on that figure).

Theres a mod out there that lets u swap ur internal memory space with a external sdcard. Getting a 64 gig card would give u a boost. I believe they did this so consumers would buy the larger memory phones, just like crapple does. Bad for us consumers, good for the business
