[Q] S-OFF, but I cannot restore a nandroid backup - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'll start off saying that I was perm rooted using the older visionary that was in the market, before it got pulled. I currently have S-OFF, and clockwork recovery installed, however I can't restore a backup because I keep getting errors with DATA and CACHE when trying to restore. It seems I have lost root? When Formatting DATA, I get the error "E:format_root_device: can't find mmc partition " userdata" I get the same for CACHE. I've also tried to flash a stock ROM that has root, failure.. I'm not sure what to do at this point. The phone wont boot, but will boot into recovery.
If anyone could help I would SOOOO appreciate it.
EDIT: When booting into recovery, I get the error "E: Can't mount CACHE: recovery/command"

Same problem
I am running into the same issue with my MT4G. Did you ever resolve the issue?

same prob here
+1 w/ mytouch 4g. Can get into fastboot, recovery, but I get the same MMC partition errors. Any ideas? Been trying to find a manual download of a clockwork mod 2.5.1.3 to see if I can sideload via fastboot.
Edit: attemted to sideloaded CWM 2.5.1.2 via fastboot, came up with "FAILED (remote: not allowed)". Does this mean I somehow lost root? On the hboot screen it says s-off...

If you've applied any updates after rooting via Visionary, you may have lost root. There have been issues with the Visionary method and even the original root was found to be flawed, there's a new root via gfree which will not allow a carrier override.
Try re-rooting via the guide in the wiki.

Can't Use custom Rom or create Nandroid Backup

Hi guys,
I got an Evo earlier this week and tried to root it first thing. I read that it might not be possible on the latest ones, but I wanted to try it anyway. I now have S-Off and root with HBoot 2.02 using some instructions from here and unRevoked 3.2.
I've been trying to take a nandroid backup and keep getting errors. I tried using Rom Manager (which just boots to ClockWorkMod Recovery and does nothing), tried to use ClockWorkMod Recovery which gets an error like can't mount /system and then I'm stuck in a continuous boot loop, and I've tried to use Amon-RA recovery which gives me an error to run nandroid-mobile.sh and then I'm stuck in a boot loop again.
Everytime I try to do a backup, I have to rerun the RUU and then UnRevoked to get my phone back in working order. It's already been about the 5th time I've done this. I've read and searched everywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Need Help Restoring Phone After Updating W/O Wipe

Okay so here's what happened:
I saw S-Off was released.
I decided to install the latest nightly before applying it. I was intoxicated.
I forgot to wipe data/factory reset. I DID NANROID, HOWEVER. I flashed the rom and gapps.
When I rebooted, it sits at the myTouch 3g Slide splash page.
At this page I have access to ADB on my pc, but for some reason can't write to any of the folders I tried.
Holding back while I reboot brings me too fastboot.
Fastboot will not flash the current nightly for me to my phone, when renamed update.zip. Fastboot also gives me an error trying to restore my nandroid piece by piece. It won't erase boot or recovery, nor will it flash those or the other pieces. It says it can send the file, but it fails on writing them.
In case the solution is to start from scratch and reroot etc., I tried that, but I cannot copy exploid to my phone, it says it doesnt have permission (same error as before).
I know this is fixable, and if anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful.
Also, I can provide any more details necessary.
Also, I can get to fastboot, hboot, recovery (not clockworkmod, the blank one with a phone icon and red arrow), and the splash page which seems to have limited ADB functionality.
HELP!
If you can get into the stock recovery, you can flash the clockwork update.zip and get into clockwork recovery. You need to do that and then reflash a ROM. If you broke root in all of this, then you won't be able to do that. I'm also assuming your s-off failed, it still is s-on? If so, that's probably why it isn't writing the partitions from your nandroid, but I'm not positive about that, since recovery can write to those partitions. If you need the clockwork update.zip, let me know and I'll attach it when I get home, I know their site is down at the moment. But yeah, get that clockwork update.zip on the root of your sd card and try flashing it through the stock recovery and then a custom ROM again. Report back whether it was successful or not

Recovery image would't update/install.

Hi everyone,
I've done a LOT of reading/searching, but since I can't find sulution decided someone could help.
Just to avoid future questions:
>My Desire is rooted.
>I tried using fastboot (Error: - not allowed)
>I tried using adb (I get an error that /system/bin/sh cannot be found).
>I tried Unreavoked3, but since the phone is rooted, the recovery doesn't isntall.
>I tried ROM Manager. It says the recovery is up to date, but when you boot it, it is stock.
>I'm using original USB cable supplied with the phone.
The only way I get into CWM recovery is flashing update.zip on my sdcard (fakeflash?).
My question are:
1. Why i cant access shell via adb?
2. How should i flash recovery?
Thank You in advance.
So if you turn the phone on whilst holding the volume down button and then select Recovery it doesn't boot into the custom Recovery?
No, it boots into stock recovery.
I just use the Android Flasher Utility (here). Really quick and painless, but you need s-off though.
I'm quite curious, how are you rooted without a custom recovery?
Maybe I don't get it, I bought the phone about a year ago and rooted using unreavoked utility. The recovery I get to gives me 4 options. Text is in blue colour, reboot, apply update.zip and wipe options. What I do, is apply update.zip so i get into CMW recovery.
If you rooted with unrEVOked it flashes CWM. If you've never had that you're not rooted
I'd go back to 100% stock with an RUU suitable for your phone and then root again
EDIT: You weren't rooted and then accepted an OTA update did you?
I think I didn't. So if I:
1. Do a nandroid backup now, I have custom rom installed.
2. Then go back to stock RUU.
3. Root the phone.
Can I do a nandroid restore so I don't have to install everything back again?
EDIT: But I have Superuser app, and if I enter Terminal, type "su" I get root privileges. How can I not be rooted?

[Q] Nandroid backup problem

Hi all,
I finally decided to root my HTC Desire. It's running 2.10.405.2, with a 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 Radio and HBOOT 0.93.0001. The recovery is Clockwork 2.5.0.7
I went thru the latest Unrevoked, and I got it rooted the first time.
Yet, I can't perform a nandroid backup in order to flash a MIUI rom. This is the displayed error message i got :
Backing up boot
Error while dumping boot image
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC :
I'm lost !
I had exactly the same problem and had to install clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 in order to be able to create a nandroid backup.
Search the desire development thread for the latest clockworkmod, download the .img version and reflash the phone using unrevoked but before you start, go into unrevoked settings and tell it to use the .img you downloaded instead of the standard one. 3.0.0.5 will then be your standard recovery and will let you backup/flash etc.
Hope this helps

Also,
Keep ROM Manager installed, because although It's generally **** and I'd never use it if I didn't have to, it has one use . .
Sometimes, you may try to flash a zip in Clockworkmod (CWM) 3.0.0.5 and it will tell you it can't flash it due to some edify scripting issue (or something like that!!)
As rare as it is, if this happens, reboot to android, run ROM Manager and ask it to install recovery. When it's done, ask it to reboot to recovery and it will install CWM 2.5.0.7 then boot into it, which will let you flash the zip which you couldn't flash before. Awesome!
The good thing is, once you leave recovery, 2.5.0.7 is gone and next time to reboot to recovery (not using ROM Manager) you will be back to 3.0.0.5.
Double awesome!!
What I've advised in the last 2 posts works well for me and has done for months, so hopefully it will work for you too.
Don't use ROM Manager for anything other than this though, cos apart from this it is rubbish!!
EDIT: CWM is here by the way

Hi,
I used Unrevoked with the latest Clockwork recovery. Unfortunately, I got this error message : "Error, failed to get root. Is your firmware too new ?"
I think I must reset the phone though I don't want to... That'll do like I did the 1st time.
That sucks !
Sorry to hear that Kev94,
Here's a few suggestions that have worked for others who got your error message:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/249730-unrevoked3-your-firmware-too-new.html
I have another problem : I just reset the phone via the phone option. Everything went fine, except it rebooted into recovery, then I rebooted it normally, and eventually nothing was reset or changed ! It was like nothing happened... WEIRD !
I'd like to wipe the phone via the recovery option, yet I can't mount /data.
Is there gonna be a problem if I choose to wipe, given it says it can't mount /data ? ->I don't want to brick or corrupt my phone, get boot loop or anything else.
Have similar problem
Again, i just performed a wipe data/factory reset via the recovery, and nothing changed ! Should I try a HBOOT "clear storage" ?

Phone is dead?

Hi
I was about to give my phone to my father, as i just got a new one. I was trying to clean up the system, so i did a partision on my sd card, and when i then tryed to reflash the phone using rom manager, i would get a error that /cache/update.zip was missing, even thought i tryed to reinstall rom manager. So i thought i could just boot to my clockwork, and do a factory reset there, so i did that. Now the phone wont boot, it just cycles throught the cyanogen boot animation. and if i go into clockwork everytime i try to select something, it just gives me a black screen, so i seems i cant reflash the device?
does any one got any ideas on how to get this phone alive again?
Did you successfully apply /sdcard/update.zip through ClockworkMod? Were there any errors? Which ClockworkMod version are you using?
You could try reflashing the Recovery partition through fastboot, although I believe you need a S-OFFed device to do that. If your device is S-ON you can use a RUU to unroot your device and then use Unrevoked to root it again. There should be a thread about that in the Desire Dev forum.
