[Q] app install issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone
I'm having an issue with not being able to install a particular app, angry birds. The problem is that during the original install my evo decided to take a **** and which left a half installed program.
Since then every attempt to install despite the version gives the following via notification:
Angry Birds Installation unsuccessful.
This error is pretty generic and doesn't give me much help. Is there any log file to which more detail is written to? I'm thinking that I will have to manually remove all of the files that were installed. Does an adb have a control file the same way a deb or rpm would that I could pull this from?
basic info:
Evo 4G
android version 2.2
kernel 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e htc-kernel at and18-2 #11
Basic sprint ROM, not rooted
I'm trying to avoid having to flash to get it installed but I know that would work.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

I don't know if this will work at all but the first thing I would do is try clearing the cache and then redownloading it.

This happened to me on a previous ROM I was using. Unmount the SD card, install angry birds, remount SD card and should be good to go.

Tried clearing the cache but no dice. Thanks metalhead, didn't even know you could clear apps cache until I google'd it.
Unmounting the sdcard worked perfectly. No idea why unless there is some temporary data on there until it installs to internal memory. Thanks bender, I should have posted here a month ago when this problem started.

"Installation unsuccessful" Market error messages

Hi there,
For the past couple of days, I've been getting "installation unsuccessful" error messages whenever I download anything from the Market. The apps are downloaded, and Android tries to install them but fails every time. I've gotten successful installations on one or two occasions, though, seemingly at random.
I have 22MB of internal storage left, and I used to be able to install apps with only 10MB, so that's not the cause. And I have around 2GB on my SD card. Funny thing is, I can't even install some .APKs of beta apps that I know should work, because I've installed them before. I thought the issue was solely related to the Market, but the Market isn't involved when installing apps from "unknown sources", or is it?
Does anyone have any suggestions besides doing a hardreset? Anyone experiencing similar issues?
Cheers
I had the same issue with my Desire. After i searched on the internet, i found a lot irellevant sollutions to this issue.
What i did? I did a backup of my SD card, format SD, restore settings to default and that it.
It was a hard decision but i couldn't find any other solution. After that, everything goes normaly, even today!
Thanks for the reply! I still hope I don't have to do a hardreset, but if nothing else works, I guess I have to go ahead and wipe that thing.
Have you tried the fix_permissions script? You can run this from the Amon Ra recovery or go to the Market and download ROM Manager. It's under the Utilities section of ROM Manager
I guess that's only for rooted devices?
OK, I give up. If no one has a solution to this, I'll just hardreset the darn thing

Is there a backup tool that can restore all your apps in a way that the Market will recognize them under "Downloads"? I restored apps from a backup once, but that was pretty pointless since I no longer could enjoy updates through the Market without having to re-download every single app.
Titanium Backup has a "Market Doctor" to fix your Market links, but you need to be rooted.
If you aren't, I'd suggest syncing with AppBrain, which at least means you won't need to search for all your apps on the Market again.

Dave

Have you tried connecting your phone to pc in disk drive mode and doing a scandisk of SD card.
I had the same problem (card was mounted as read-only)
After I done scandisk it found and fixed the problem.

No, I had not tried that since the SD card appeared to be working. I used to get quite a few "SD card damaged" messages until I let Android format the card. I tried Scandisk now but it didn't take care of the Market issue unfortunately. Thanks anyway
But it does indeed seem like the SD card somehow is to blame. Those few apps that I actually have been able to install have been installed to the internal storage.
I think this problem started when I for some reason decided to clear the Market's cache and data. Thing is, I have set Android to install apps to the SD card by default (adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2) and that might have something to do with it as well, although it worked fine for three weeks.
I got this when I installed the unofficial OTA update for 2.2. Only fix was to try another custom rom.
Have you tried to go into manage applications and then clear all data for the market app ? This has solved some similar problems for me in the past.
Yes, I cleared the Market's cache and data, and I actually did that before the issue started as well. I just hope a hardreset will fix it all, going to erase everything later today
For the record, I had to not only perform a hardreset, but delete the .android_secure folder on my memory card where apps are stored to get the Market working again. I could probably just have deleted the .androd_secure folder, but then I would have lost all apps installed to the SD anyway
Works like a charm now.
hey did you find a solution to your problem???
if you did please tell me

Yes, but not the one I wanted Look at my post about yours.
i was having the same installation unsuccessful problem. i deleted the .android_secure folder and i can now install all the apps that werent working. i did not have to do a full flash of the ROM.

But erasing that folder removed all the apps you had installed on your memory card, right?

Make the Market download apks to SD Card

Hello everyone.
I've recently switched to the Data++ Hboot with 10MB cache. Ever since then I haven't been able to download large apps from the Market.
I was wondering how to make the Market save the APK's on the SD Card instead of the cache partition. If I remember correctly this has been implemented in a number of ROMs, including the Oxygen ROM to name one. Where would I change that?
Sorry for deviating from the topic, but I have this strong urge to ask you this: How did you get 10MB cache with Data++? According to alpharev.nl, Data++ gives 5MB cache....
On a side note, I also have 10MB cache but my apps are installing fine (with a little help from A2SD).....how big are the apps you're trying to download? Maybe I haven't come across "big" ones yet...

Oh I see they've updated their website. I'm using an older version of Data++ (System 180M, Cache 10M, Data 261M). I still have the img plus a screenshot of the website to compare MD5, if you're interested.
Well, it was just a guess. Downloads to Angry Birds (both versions) and Rocket Bunnies are not working, to name a few. Since they're all over 10MB I assumed it was due to the smaller cache partition. I'm also using A2SD btw.
Hmmm, they are not too big then (was expecting 20+MB).....I just downloaded those two apps couple of hours ago on my one and it's running fine even though I've only got 10MB cache.
Normally you'd need a file manager (like the one with Titanium backup or root explorer) to do the job of moving .apk files to SD..these are normally stored in /data/app inside the internal memory and requires root access to get them...but the files must be downloaded in the first place.
Is your system up-to-date? I too had similar problems until I did a complete flash-over and updated everything.... unfortunately I didn't work out the cause of it

Oh I see, I was under the impression the apks get saved on the cache partition. In that case, I should look for the problem elsewhere. Yes, I'm running the latest Sense ROM (2.29 with the 5 ending), but modified to suit my needs. I guess it could be related to that.
More info about the 'non-downloading'. When I click on install in the Market, the download icon appears quickly in the notification bar and then quickly disappears. Was this the same problem you were having?
In short....yes...that was the main sympton I had....the download icon disappears quickly....and it only happened to some of the apps
Have you tried rebooting the phone?...

Yes, tried that. Also tried clearing the dalvik cache and cache but with no success. I have found this while looking for a solution on Google. Seems someone else is having the exact same problem.

Hmm, yea. The thing that's really frustrating is I still don't know what the problem was in my case..if I did I could've been a little bit more helpful. In my "rage" I just flashed a new kernel and a new ROM and that sorted out the problem for me....didn't stop to wonder what was actually causing it.
EDIT: I think changing the kernel, especially, did it for me...
Hmm…
I have the same problem (except my /cache is 3MB so I can't download files larger than that).
Funny though, it used to work just fine (I have Angry Birds and flash for example), it has only recently started to act up.
If anyone finds a solution (possibly without flashing), I'll be quite grateful
P.S.
When my download fails (downloading icon simply disappears), my logcat shows DownloadManager reporting that there is not enough space (with about 60MB on /data) and then Vending complains about the file not being found (because DownloadManager didn't download it).
Seems like a bug in DownloadManager to me. It probably doesn't look up the cache (mine is in /data/cache IIRC) but uses the free space on /cache to determine if there is enough to fit the .apk.
I'm now working on same think. Need to Market downloading apps to SD card instead of /cache. So is there any tweak for this?
Yep.
Requires a little bit of knowledge about how linux handles mount points.
Basically, the easiest way is to bind mount a folder on the sdcard/data to /cache.
I get this .. I just clear the market cache ... go back into the market , all fine .
I normally have to " download " stuff 3 times , before it installs.

[Q] "UIDs are inconsistent", most apps are FC'ing -> Can't Download from Market

[Q] "UIDs are inconsistent", most apps are FC'ing -> Can't Download from Market
So yesterday I ran your run-of-the-mill market search for updates, "update all", phone back in pocket while downloading.. when I pull it out, it's frozen up completely. I leave it for half an hour before pulling the battery, but on booting, the updates start again, and sure enough before long the damn thing freezes up. I try this again a couple of times before clearing all data of the Market and Download Manager apps. Woohoo, seems to prevent the downloads automatically starting, and thus in the short term my phone works. I'll sort out the problem app in the morning (ROM Manager seems to want to go to 4.x from 3.0.2.4, and it's by far the most system-nosy app on the update list, so I'm eyeing it with suspicion).
Morning comes, quick check on facebook and xda in the morning, seems fine. Phone in pocket. Next time I take it out, the bastard's frozen and needs a battery pull again. Swearing a bit by now, I see with some anxiety that when it finally boots, it's throwing something about "UIDs are inconsistent. You should wipe /data." Ohhh dear. Interestingly (and adding to my stress levels), it seems to have started the Sense launcher instead of Launcher Pro, and I'm getting "Swype has FC'd" errors every half a minute or so, on top of the fifteen or so FC messages for various apps after dismissing the UID error. Thank god for the hardware keyboard.
Having a look around on the net, there's a few references to a file called 'uiderrors.txt'. I've taken a look in this, and it seems to have every single app (i.e. everything listed in the All tab in Manage Applications) listed with a mismatched UID.
Any ideas? I suppose the next step is formatting the SD card, but I was wondering if anyone knows what's actually gone wrong here before I start down the path of blindly resetting things in the hope that something will work.
Virtuous 1.02 with the Standard (not Stock) kernel, on an Indian model Desire Z.
Hello... Okay first thing is wipe everything. Then reflash the Rom. If that doesn't work download a different Rom and redownload the Rom you were using. After you flash back try to fix permission. Don't format your SD card yet, let's do that if the wiping and reflashing doesn't work.

Sorry double post.
Thanks for the reply. I first formatted /data with CWM; on rebooting everything was nice and factory-like, but for the fact that nothing could install from market. After trying various fiddling around to make it work, I gave up and re-flashed Virtuous 1.02 (clearing cache and /data) - but still I can't get market installations to work. It eveidently worked for a while, because this time it managed to automatically re-install most apps from my Google account, but now I get "download was unsuccesful" for everything; paid and free. I've tried downloading on both wifi and 3G, uninstalling market upgrades, clearing cache and data for Market, Market Updater, and Download Manager, using ROM Manager to fix permissions, renaming /sdcard/.android_secure, unmouting SD card completely, and rebooting after each of these steps (except the SD card unmount obviously). I only have my primary Google account set up at the moment to try and eliminate any issues with my secondary account (which is a Google Apps email address). Now I'm at a bit of a loss. Does the download manager keep a log of the actual errors encountered?

Well try to download a different rom and flash it, try to download something not sense. I had that annoying issue before... Backup everything on your sd card and format it using clock work or go on the setting and format the sdcard there.

Why would formatting the SD card work if downloading fails even if the card is unmounted? Thanks for the reply though

Because sometimes the sd card can be corrupted and when you download stuff from the android market you will get an unsuccessful or your app says its downloading but never installs. When you restore the sdcard to its original factory it should work again. Well thats just me i guess. but i hope everything goes well my friend

i am having the same problem, i am about to lose my mind.
same issue here cant install anything on any rom
I just ran into this issue today. Anyone know if formatting the sd card actually worked? Backing up 7 gigs of whatever is on my phone is just gonna take too long. I don't wanna do it unless I really have to.
I've wiped multiple times and tried several roms, and I've even checked the rils on my radio and fixed permissions. The whole 9 yards.
Edit:i give up ._. im gonna try formatting it. are any folders on the sd card necessary to keep in order for the phone to function or keep it's root? if not, im only going to keep my music and clockworkmod folders.
had same problem, but a full wipe and clean install helped.

[Q] Delayed Bootloops after setting up new ROMs

Hi guys,
I could not find the exact same problem anywhere else, so here we go:
I have been running on [STOPPED][ROM ICS 15 Jul] slim rom for Desire [based on Sandvold .15 & K900 build 40] successfully for some months with only slight problems. One of those being an occasional (hot) reboot out of the blue. Recently, without any particular trigger, I encountered a bootloop on one such occasion. When I removed the SD card, I was able to boot, but obviously had no data and apps did not start, so I had to reset some things.
Since then, I made a lot of full wipes in 4ext recovery, formatted and re-partitioned my SD card, even tried out another SD card, and installed several different ICS ROMs, e.g. Sandvold or AOKP. The systems always work in the beginning - I can boot and set up my stuff. At some point afterwards, I get into a bootloop again on the next reboot I make. I can always enter recovery without problems, though.
[edit: Additionally, removing the SD card now does not help anymore: bootloops seem definite]
I have not been able to completely narrow down a possible trigger. However, I noticed that without setting up my Google Account, I seem to be able to keep the phone running & booting for days. If I do enter google data, I at some point get the bootloop, whether I check the "sync/save my phone via google" or not (though not immediately after entering the account - it seems to take some time - some corrupt data to be synched perhaps?). Obviously, I am not keen on starting a new google account and losing all my apps and data, and running the phone without google at all is, let's just say, limited. I do not really see how a bootloop can be caused by some data that is coming in via google, but it comes up with an annoying certainty.
One last thing: the 4ext app currently pops up a news window regarding bootloops on some users' devices, but their recommended solution is to check in superuser whether the su binary is up-to-date. Unfortunately, it seems to be (3.1.1).
So if anybody out there has seen something like this or some suggestions as to narrow down the problem, I would much appreciate it!
Thanks in advance and best wishes from Germany!
This might be related to the google play store updating to the latest version. It is known to cause a boot loop on every restart for some ICS ROMs. Try this if it helps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ostcount=16742
Thanks so much for pointing me in this direction!
Although your link seems to be broken, it gave me the correct idea on what to search for.
I followed steps that are discussed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1944766 as well as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355660&page=1661 and seem to be finally bootloop-free again even after setting up all my stuff!
For people who might need to follow the procedure, I did the following things:
Full Wipe
Install Sandvold ROM
Download modded Play Store APK file called: Vending-3.8.15.noupdate.norestrictions
Rename APK to "Vending.apk" and push to sdcard
Mount data, system, sdcard in Recovery
Enter "adb shell"
cd /system/app
rm Vending.apk
cd /data/app (might also be /data/data or something)
rm -r com.android.vending
rm -r com.android.vending.updater
cp /sdcard/Vending.apk /system/app/
(Dalvik wipe if ROM is not a fresh install)
Boot Up
Glad it worked for you. I followed almost the same steps myself. Unfortunately this happened to me while I was travelling and I was stranded with a brick for a week.
P.S: No idea why the link got eaten up...

NEED HELP! Cant/Denied access internal/emulated storage

i wanted to install new stock rom from here but fastboot wont install it so i went to twrp and tried to flash it from there but during flashing twrp just rebooted itself and saying installation wasnt sucessful, i figured this is due to S-On but prior to flashing it i did possibly the stupidest thing, i went to ADVANCED WIPE and wiped every option on the list(dalvik, system, data, internal storage, cache) except for micro sdcard ofcourse. i then went to FIX PERMISSIONS and stupidly select the ALSO FIX SELINUX CONTEXTS. when those done i then went and install another image which is on the sdcard that i downloaded from here E9pw_Android5.0_Sense70_E1.zip . the installation went well and rebooted itself and got to the homescreen and whatnot. but the troubles came when i tried to install apps from playstore and it gave me all kind of errors known to man, even going into file manager to access the internal storage gave me problem it says something along ACCESS IS DENIED or CANT ACESSS EMULATED OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. when i opened chrome to download something the browser just crashed because apparently it wont able to access the emulated storage. yeah i fcked up badly here. dont know whatelse to do.
see below of the files that i currently have in my external microsd card:
E9pw_Android5.0_Sense70_E1.zip -WORKS
open gapps arm64 android 5.0 stock
RUU 0PJXIMG_A55ML_DTUL_L50_SENSE70_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.35.7 07.2 - DONT WORK

Thanks!
Got it fixed! by going to TWRP-->WIPE-->FORMAT DATA and reinstall the ROM. if anybody experiencing the same problem please do the same.
