[Q] Method to OC G2 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know how to OC a phone in any way. So I was wondering if there are guides to do this without the phone die of overheating. I see threads such has the 1.9 ghz one and all it provided was a kernal. How do I install it using the simplest method?

Well I don't suggest doing 1.8~1.9 just yet because everyone says it's quite unstable although
I noticed a fellow member arcadia310 did a video tutorial with an easy method for overclocking to 1.4ghz. Check it out.

Setcpu

Is anyone using setcpu? I bought it back when I had the hero but I'm not sure if it will work now on this phone. I'm rooted using toast's method if that even matters for something like this. thanks in advance!
It's the same CPU as the Nexus and it has settings for the Nexus, so in theory it should work. I had a Nexus before this phone and it worked fine.
I believe, like the Hero, you need a kernel tweak to have true overclocking.
yeah I dont wanna overclock i just want to downclock when the screen is off to save battery. I tried using the nexus one settings but it didnt seem like it was working using on demand. The clock speeds it was showing were kind of goofy. Guess i should wait for the programmer to update it

true that but i have always been nervous about burning up the processor hehe
Overclocking would be nice, but I'd also like to save some battery with the on demand profile. Does anyone have it working?
I posted a patch in a thread in the development forum that would enable full support, plus overclocking, but nobody seems to have noticed it.
I might have to buy an EVO just to compile and test kernels... Or, if anybody wants to help me, shoot me a PM.
I used the unrevoked method to root and picked the N1 for the device in setcpu and it seems to be working great with the on demand setting. I have noticed a nice increase in battery life so far.

yea i use 1.5.4 pro edition... i make it go to 245mhz while idle/sleep... it works perfectly... and it runs 'ondemand'... if you dont need speed it wont go... i keep it to start at boot, and have ATK to ignore it so it doesnt close... theres no lag btw when it moves back to 998mhz

well im thinking about OCing my Tilt 2 but one little problem never OCed a phone, a computer yes, I have a general idea but not sure if its the same. 2 questions
1. How do I overclock (program, from xxxxx.txt file)?
2. What is a safe clock that won't drain the battery fast and won't overheat while still being faster then stock?
So can anyone help out a noob =D.
I'm not an expert, so I can't really help you out. There is currently no overclocker working with the TP2 (I think it's due to the Processor).
However, there's a bounty thread going, so you might want to join them.

underclocking defy..saves battery !

I have read a thread which i can't find the link to...hopefully i'll post it here. The guy experimented the whole thing for few days and watched the battery consumption using different voltages and frequencies. I saw that 245-250 mhz is very safe frequency for min and it does let your android alive without charging for 2-3 day with GPS, WIFI turned on.
I just want to know that i've tried milestone software and setCPU but i can't underclock my defy with it...any other simple way to underclock the defy?

[Q] Overclocking the Evo past 1.19

So, Im sure this was answered somewhere, and I searched all over.
With that said, why cant the Evo be overclocked past the standard 1.19 or 1.2? I know stability is an issue, but there are other ARM processors that can OC almost double. Is the Evo ARM processor just not able to handle anything past that?
Does anyone know?

You cannot compare the processor in teh Evo to other similar processors. Every single processor is different, and overclocking the evo past those speeds could brick it.
Why would you want to overclock that far? The Evo has no ventilation and crappy power management, even with an extended battery. You're taking an already unstable system and pushing it to the edge. Not only will your phone overheat and freeze, but you can permanently damage the hardware.
I know every processor is different and each one has their own limits.
There is always a risk of bricking and damaging the actual hardware, but what im asking is, in theory, and a practical test, can you push the evo processor past the 1.19 that seems to be the limit (im not talking about going huge, but is there a possibility of being able to hit the 1.5Ghz?). Because there are certain frequencies that are not stable, but ones slightly past that could be stable.
Just throwing it out there.

I would, but all the kernels that the Devs have developed have either a limit put on them, or they havent been able to allow it to OC that far

I was wondering this too. It would be nice to have the option to push it over 1.19ghz, I'll be the test dummy.
My Evo can handle 1228 fairly well but can tell its not as stable as say 1190. 1190 MHz is no prob...1267 usually crashes after a run or 3 in quadrant. 1113 runs niiiice for me and my 0004 evo

I can run 1190 just fine. Can a Dev possibly create a kernel that allows us to go past 1.2whatever.
I can't go up to 1.19 stabley
Gimme a couple a days to come up with a new sig that is cool.
if I pass 1190 endless bootloop.... then ya gotta be fast and turn that damn thing down
I can go to 1228 MHz with Tiamat but it will crash and reboot once you do a couple of things.

despite the meriad of answers you have gotten, I have been running my Evo on Sprint lovers Rom, and KiNgxKernel-Evo-12-BFS357-2.6.32.25-Flashable.zip for kernal.
I have been overclocked at 1267 since the day the kernal came out. it is singularly the only kernal that has allowed me to do this without ever crashing. OH, and I'm using
SetCPU 1267 on both min and max and scaling set to performance.

Not going too big? Going from 1.0 ghz to 1.5ghz on a phone is like going from a civic to a v8. Alot of computer cpu's dont even overclock 500 mhz. I think you're expecting a little too much from a phone. If you want more, go buy a dual-core cpu atrix 4g or something. I'm a speed freak myself when it comes to cpu overclocking (mainly on computers) but 1.113 is plenty for a phone. It even runs fine at 600mhz. Dont get me wrong, it would be cool to get it that high, but your phone would hate you lol

There are tons of kernals available in the Dev forum. I personally recommend Netarchy's kernals, but you are free to try any of them.

Until HTC drops source codes you will lose camera and other things.
How did you overclock the CPU? I have tried the setCPU and it does not work, I have my Phone rooted, installed the crazy UNleashed rom (since uninstalled) and could not get the setCPU to overclock. Even though UNleashed is made to do that, and I have read others getting over clocked. I am running Synergy now, which I do not think it can Overclock the EVO, but I would like to know how you fine folks are accomplishing this. I would love to go 1.1 right now.

If you're using a stock HTC kernel, hit menu inside SetCPU -> Perflock Disabler. Disable Perflock -> Set On Boot. Ta da.

Setcpu

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and I apologize in advance if this has been asked before but, I have an HTC Inspire 4G but have a custom rom flashed and it shows my phone model as a Desire HD. Would I actually need setcpu, or would I be fine without it?

Maybe best to ask at the Inspire or DHD sections, however, I can't see why SetCPU would be a bad thing.
SetCPU enables you to run custom clock speeds, so you can overclock or underclock as you see fit. Also, you can set parameters, so as your battery drains, different speeds are employed.
In all honesty, it is probably not something that you need perse, but if you want to have a bit of fun, I don't see why not. Just be careful if you decide to overclock...if you push too hard and your kernel doesn't support OC, you could have real dramas.

You will really have dramas. If your kernel doesn't support overclocking, you will not be able to overclock... no matter how hard you push.
