[Q] How much data are you using? - Windows Phone 7 General

Just curious how data heavy WP7 is. Anyone checked their usage? I realize we can't see a solid month yet, but at the least we might be able to see some trends

TMoUS doesn't make this easy to determine, they give you all your data sessions, you'd have to add them all up to find out it seems. Their own total says 0

It's extremely data heavy if you're a Zune Pass subscriber, and stream lots of music.
Not really compatible with AT&T's new 2GB data plans, IMO, and even a 5GB cap is cutting it close if you listen to a lot of music - prolly won't even be enough for many people.
If they thought the iPhone was taxing their network, just wait until they have lots of people on their phones streaming Zune Pass music, in Addition to all the iPhone/iPad users.

I do most of my data consumption over wifi, but I don't try to slow it down when on-network, though the connection speed usually drops (except when I'm in ATL or Charlotte)

Good call on the Zune pass. I imagine a lot of people on att are gonna be getting some big bills next month. They really need to add another tier to their data plans.

I've been on WP7 exclusively since 10/8 or 10/15.

259.1950 MB 8/28-9/27 HD2

ckacey: You simply don't use your phone that much as far as data goes. Do you even have Zune Pass?
When I was on AT&T I had a Samsung Jack to start, and I'd do solidly above 300MB on that phone. keep in mine, I had 0 (zilch, none) AT&T reception at my house, so all my data usage was outside the house - about 15 miles away is when I'd get any AT&T 3G coverage. I switch to an Aria (well they upgraded me for free because of my reception issues... not that it made a difference...) and my data usage went up above 500MB a month - likely due to the better YouTube Player application and a better web browser, in addition to more services integrated with the phone (Facebook, Twitter, FourSquares, etc.).
Again, with no AT&T reception anywhere near me.
With T-Mobile I dont' get any 3G here (but I can at least make calls and get 'G' reception) and I do over a Gig.
In a 3G area with a WP7 device I'd probably do tripple that over a month due to Zune Pass streaming and downloading.
2G is going to cut it close for a lot of people on AT&T. 5G will be enough on T-Mobile and later Sprint/Verizon for most people, but people who use the hell out of their devices as glorified Zune HDs will probably run into trouble especially when you couple everything else they do on the phone.
Especially those that don't spend as much time in front of a computer like me.
WiFi isn't everywhere (maybe for some people, but not for a majority of us) and in many cases the 3G connection is faster than what you'd get off WiFi (i.e. using a Vibrant or 3G WP7 device in an HSPA+ market will often net you faster speeds unless you have getting WiFi off a Fibre or very high speed connection).
Each song you stream off Zune Pass is probably about 4-5MB data, accounting for perhaps a lower streaming bitrate since I see most of the ones I downloaded are in the 5-8 MB range in size.

I have about 350gb of Zune pass content on my laptop. I've been a subscriber since Urge got cancelled and sold my account to Rhapsody (I can't stand Real Networks) unfortunately WiFi isn't everywhere we need it and cell coverage is less than ideal.
My phone is a satellite to my PC, I'd say it burns through about 1-3gb of non USB traffic each month. My Xbox and PC are the real hogs and I don't know how people put up with a capped home connection.

I've used 55.58MB of data so far (had it since it launched). That's only because I have wifi almost everywhere I go (home, work, school). I love the turn of data button

17mb since i got my wp7, most of the time, i'm on wifi ... i knew i shouldn't of unsubscribed from the tmobile tv service just yet .

This is all great info. Thanks so much to everyone that's replied thus far.
With my Sprint Palm Pre I find that I burn through 1-1.5GB per month. Mostly from streaming podcasts and web surfing when away from home.
WP7 could be a totally different animal for me though. I have a Zune HD and Zune Pass. I've long loved the idea of having a Zune phone and the possibility of having access to the Marketplace anywhere I go. I spent some time with a Samsung Focus at an AT&T store this week and loved it. However, the 2GB cap on their new tiered plan is of major concern to me. I don't like the idea of having to be conservative with my data usage :/

Yep, so you usage patterns may be more similar to mine, because with my Vibrant I get around a Gig and if I actually got 3G here I'd probably be around 1.5-2G a month.
Yea, I think I'm going to have to get a Zune HD. My Android phone just doesn't cut it as a media device (it's downright f'ing terrible, to put it nicely) and I need something to put my media on. The HD2 is too damn big to carry around as a second media device and WM6.5 is clunky as hell to use for that purpose.
Unless I can sell both, in which case I'd just get an HD7.

I avg 2-5gb per month of usage. I have been throttled once by t-mobile (hit the 5gb softcap). That is with the hd2. I'm guessing it might drop some just due to subsribing to podcasts on zune, and transferring them to the phone instead of downloading straight to the phone.
I use wifi some at home and work, just depends. I get a lot faster speeds at work on my data connection.

305 MB since it's launch, in UK, but i can see data usage going up. there are not many useful apps in MP (marketplace) atm.

i don't think they have to worry about the phone7 users (both of them) taxing the network ;-)
last month i used 4Gb on tmo.

I think there needs to be a live tile that tells you your internet usage as there is a widget called 3G Watchdog that does it on Android.

i have 12 gb data plan, used 48 MB in the last 6 days.
most of the time i use wifi.

You're only one person. Think of potentially hundreds to thousands of people in an area using that much data.
It can be an issue, potentialy, and people on AT&T cannot use that much data without basically paying almost double for their data plan.

Dash or Blackjack? Help me decide please!

I have an unhealthy habit (well, according to my wife anyway ) of replacing my phones every 3-4 months. So far this year I had 8525 (excellent phone but a bit too bulky for my liking) and Nokia N75 which is my current phone. However, I am sorely missing a real keyboard and would like something a tad smaller/slimmer then 8525. So far my choices have been narrowed down to Dash and Blackjack. I was able to briefly fondle both phones and am now at the crossroads, which one to choose?
Both phones share many similarities but there are also major differences. Being a 3G user on at&t network I have been spoiled by both 8525 and N75, so as far as data is concerned Blackjack is a clear winner. However, BJ has some major annoyances that I am not sure I will be able to tolerate. First, whoever designed the keyboard on the BJ should be slapped with a live wet trout. To make d-pad flush with soft keys was a major oversight IMO. Second, I do not care for a proprietary charge/sync/audio port. I like Dash's keyboard much better and the curved shape feels really good in hand. Wi-fi is a bonus but is something I can definitely live without. Otherwise, both phones appear to be fairly similar.
I am leaning towards purchasing Dash, but am afraid that lack of 3g will frustrate me. Can anyone who's using or used both phones share their thoughts as to which one I should choose? Is at&t EDGE fast enough to handle streaming audio like Shoutcast? Money is not an object, both phones are about the same price.
Sounds like to me that you'll like the HTC Cavalier more. With twice the speed of the Dash at 400mhz, it also carries 3G capability. The only downside is that it's about $500+ in most sites. I use the Dash and I love it but don't count on EDGE streaming anything with decent quality. Depending where you are at, EDGE vary in speed. I get about 120kbps on average which is slow for me. It does the job and I won't complain since I'm only paying $5.99 for the internet access. As for Wi-Fi, it's a BIG PLUS. I know you mention that you don't care much for it but trust me, you'll want it if you purchase the Dash. Wi-Fi is a luxury feature at the moment since not many phones actually have it especially in such a slim factor like the Dash. Whenever I'm home, I turn on my Wi-Fi and hope one day when T-Mobile has officially set up their 3G network, I'll be browsing and zooming through my webpages without the Wi-Fi.

He's talking about T-Mobile T-zones Internet which is $5.99 a month
The T-Zone internet access is sort of hit or miss. Everyone used to be able 'utilize' The TZones $5.99 plan for full internet access. Originally designed for limited web service on a vanilla cell-phone -- we all used to be able to use it's proxy settings on our WM devices and cheat our way into full Edge internet access. Over the past year T-Mobile has been working on ways to enforce this basic TZone access on WM devices. Seems these changes are being implemented by region, as it still works for many, but not all, T-Mobile WM device using subscribers. It stopped working for me about 6 months ago, with WM5. There's a bunch more about this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=306361
WM6 includes a T-Zones update, which enhances with a separate WAP browser that gives you TZones limited access to the web (movie times, weather, news, etc) For a couple bucks more a month, you can sync your corporate or personal email accounts to TZones, and to your device. Messenger, IE, and anything else that connects to the Internet won't work with TZones.
If you're unable to jury-rig your Dash for unlimited access at the TZones rate, they want you to purchase the $30 per month 'Total Internet' plan that includes unlimited EDGE and HotSpot WiFi access. You can opt for the Blackberry plan, no WiFi -- unlimited EDGE for $20 -- comparatively pretty reasonable.
You asked about Shoutcast with EDGE. Don't know about AT&T, but with T-Mobile, not so great. Fine for lower bitrate voice audio like newscasts. Music skips >a lot< and video can be downright frustrating. What I find better is packing 20 hours or so of recorded Shoutcast streams from my laptop to the 2-gig MicroSD card in my Dash. Using ULEAD video products, I've converted about 10 hours of video into high quality files that all fit on my 2-gig card with a lot of room to spare. I'd say microSD card useage is a better consideration than streaming (with the Dash). There's a learning curve, but it pays off
As to which is better -- I'd say a overall a Dash is better, mainly as a hold-over device until all the new gadgetry that'll be out in 6 months, or better yet, a year. I helped someone set up their BlackJack. It's nice too. What I didn't like about the BJ: battery life. Without changing something in the registry, the broadband-service radio stays on, even if you aren't currently using, or just don't use, broadband. Prior to the registry change, the device barely made it through a day -- low battery alerts after 7-8 hours. After the change, it's on par with the Dash, however, will only use AT&T's EDGE service. The average user isn't going to think to Google this, or find the software that lets them make the change.
With a 2-year commitment, you can get a Dash for free via Amazon.com or LetsTalk.com. There are probably offers for the BJ, but I'm not familiar with AT&T.
As you have an interest in audio -- the 2.0 Bluetooth on the Dash produces amazing sound on a set of Motorola S9 headsets (also Bluetooth 2.0). I believe the BJ is Bluetooth 1.2 even after a WM6 upgrade.

Hi, some more thoughts about both phones... I own a Blackjack, my girlfriend a Dash, so I know them quite well.
Well, if you really are a 3G user... this is a big plus for the blackjack. I am from Germany, so I am not sure if it makes sense the German/American EDGE/3G networks, but here in Germany the blackjack is definitely much quicker with HSDPA (up to 1,8 Mbps) compared to EDGE.
But this is the only "objective" factor that I can mention. Oh, maybe one more: I like the Wi-Fi support omy Blackjack very very much. But here in Germany the Dash is also offered by O2 (called XDA Cosmo), and this version offers Wi-Fi as well. If you have the opportunity to get the Dash including Wi-Fi support (I think the original HTC devices support Wi-Fi as well) I would go for it...
Just a few more points that I noticed:
- the standard battery of the Blackjack is really weak, the dash will work longer. But I got a 2nd, extended battery with my blackjack, and I am quite happy with it. Disadvantage: it is thicker than the standard battery, so the device is not so slim/elegant anymore. Anyway, I think it still looks great.
- in my opinion, the blackjack "feels" better - I think the keyboard is a little more solid (?), and - sounds stupid - I really like to touch the blackjack, don't know how Samsung did it.
- On the other hand, I prefer the display of the Dash/Cosmo (I think it is a little brighter/clearer)
I emailed HTC Support two days ago and told them how disappointed I am with the company for delaying the WM6 packages.
This is the response I got:
Hello Sir,
The Rom update for the Windows mobile 6 for the S620 has not been released yet. Please be a bit more patient. As soon as the update will be released (hopefully end of September) It should be available for download from the E- Club section of the HTC website.

I'm seriously considering selling my S620 and buying a Blackjack because they HAVE actually made the s/w available already.
HTC's support has been very poor - I know this from earlier experience.
Hang in there ... I'm told by my contact at Microsoft the WM6 for S620 will be released by HTC on 17-Aug. Which means sometime within 2 weeks of that ;-)

Looking for new carrier, any help?

Hey guys. I was with T-mobile for a while but after they started throttling me aI switched to Sprint and got an Evo 3D. I'm sick of sprint now, but NEED Unlimited data because this is what I use for my home internet. Would anyone know of any good, cheap month-to-month GSM carriers that fit this discription? HSPA+ connectivity would be awesome too if that exists.
Can't wait to get back on the Nexus train!
Edit* for durp
There are no month-to-month options that give you unlimited data without throttling.
The only possible option is signing contract on Verizon and tricking them into giving you unlimited data. At that point you can just buy cable high speed at home and a month to month cell plan for much less... and you never have to worry about anything.
Get a home ISP. For God's sake people, these wireless plans are not meant to be exploited as home network solutions. Unless you're an extremely light home user that'll only use 10-15gb between both the phone and home, you need to just pay for cable high speed...
Most carriers don't give unlimited data anymore. If that is a priority, you could see if Verizon/AT&T and/or T-Mobile give unlimited data for business users, and see if you could sign up as a business user.
And martonikaj is right, if you use 10s or 100s of GBs per month at home, better to get a landline internet option. That itself will save you money.
And for the few ones that claim to have unlimited data, the data coverage is ****ty. What's the point of having 'unlimited' when you have no data most of the time?
I'm sorry to say but everyone is right. Go buy home internet. Quit being el cheapo.
Its people like you that require cell providers to throttle, remove unlimited plans , and "optimize networks"
If you used the cell phone as designed and as intended as a mobile device not home internet you'd be fine

That's classic.
I already pay for one Internet bill. I'm not paying for two. I do almost everything from my Mobile and I've done it this way for the last 5 years. And I'll continue to do it this way, thank you all very much.
Mobile phone's aren't dumb phones anymore, they are full on computers. Stop acting like it's 1999.
It's my fault that AT&T continues to waste cash on failed mergers or rebranding efforts? That Sprint bet on the wrong wireless standard? That T-Mobile was cheap and didn't want the iPhone when they had multiple chances to grab one and as a direct consequence it stunted their growth and with the continual loss of subscribers will eventually finish their company? It's my fault that companies couldn't look five years down the road and see a hint of the future? It's literally right there in the palm of your hand. It's my fault for signing a contract to use "unlimited" data when it was offered and offered gratefully? I even got a thank you when I re-signed. Twice.
The future is MOBILE, gentlemen. I just embrace it and use my iPhone, Galaxy Nexus, N9 and Lumia 800 the way it was designed and meant to be used as my central communications tool. Voice, text and data all working together without limits.
Quit making excuses for being cheap

That's cool and all, but these phones aren't meant to be home routers for regular home internet use on multiple computers and devices. People really need to just buy a modem and pay for home internet. Having just a smartphone for their only data may be practical for some people but its nowhere near efficient (cost or hassle wise) for most. As I said earlier, its cheaper to get a prepaid plan for your cell phone and a home cable connection with no data cap than it is to pay Verizon or AT&T monthly for just cell service.
Cell companies don't offer unlimited data anymore because they don't need people taking their phones and burning 150gb a month on 3G/4G. That's just not where the industry is right now. And you're crazy if you think that unlimited data on phones will be coming back any time soon.
To the poster who said "everything should be mobile", I can only say that there's a fixed amount of spectrum that very large and powerful companies and the very large and powerful government in the US is fighting over. There's only so much data that can be transmitted on that spectrum. Therefore you will have limits on mobile. Even with LTE, the engineers are getting very close to maxing out what they can transmit over mobile. Now of course they can get more by sticking a cell on everything, but that is going to take a while.
All in all, if you use more than 10 GB you should use a wireline connection that has the bandwidth capability to feed high bandwidth uses over a long time frame.

Sprint Unlimited Data

I know they say it's unlimited, but is there a point which they will boot you?
I have never approached the 2gb warning before but I just moved and have had my computer tethered and gone over 8 gb in 7 days. (A lot of video streaming)
Will Sprint give the boot if this continues?
I only know of them booting people who are using Verizon PRLs and roaming over like 50gb a day. And I've been watching for years.

If Sprint determines that you are tethering without a tethering plan, there is a chance you might get the boot.
There a morons that have posted here that they tethered their Xboxes and played games over the network and used dozens of gigs of data (without even paying for the 5GB tethering plan), and then were offended when Sprint called them on it.
Although you are probably safe as long as you aren't roaming or downloading torrents.

Roam a lot on verizon PRLs and or tether to consoles and streaming HD quality videos. Usually happens when u get > 10 gigs of tethering using obvious tools (aforementioned).
You could easily use 8gb in 7 days on just your phone streaming music and watching videos for part of each day. If you start using 8gb a day for extended time periods then you might be suspect.
Ok, so from what you have said, I could be ok.
I am tethering without a tethering plan however...and 5gb of tethering isn't going to work, because most of the data goes to Netflix...
I'm not trying to get the boot, I have no problem with Sprint or their service.
Do they give a warning or just tell me I have no service anymore?
My buddy who works for Time Warner told me that ISP/carriers cant monitor individual data legally so they don't know where it is going just that a the amount being used. At this point I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes they call or send a warning letter but that would be months down the road. The call would be along the lines of Mr. ideseth I see you have been using a lot of data lately. And your reply would be yes I am really enjoying this unlimited package thanks for checking in with me.
Although tethering without a sprint package IS against the terms of use as long as you are not roaming you shouldnt have anything to worry about. Sprint knows customers use their phone to use netflix, there is an android application, its the same amount of data usage either way, thats expected usage. ENJOY YOUR TRULY UNLIMITED DATA WITH SPRINT!
p.s. I am switching from sprint to t-mobile due to poor service LOL :silly:
They my not know what the hell you're doing but they sure as hell know what ports are being used. Phones do not connect to the ports that consoles / high def streaming services connect to. Using the info on where you're connecting to; they can make a very accurate educated guess on what you're doing and give you the "warning letter" before they boot you.

The 2gb warning that you see on your phone i believe is just a stock warning for data usage regardless of your carrier.
your good I've gotten up to about 15gb in one month, although i wasn't tethering just using a lot of data. But i don't think they'll watch you that much because I've had several months upwards of 10gbs. never any warnings or letters..

You'll be fine I tether for work everyday, andbhave been for over 2 years. The only choices for internet at my house are dial-up, satellite or 3g, we don't have cable or fios out here in the sticks and dial-up and satellite are both too slow, and satellite is unreliable during storms, and in Florida we get alot of storms in the summer months. Between my 4 lines on my account we use anywhere between 150-250gbs of data a month. The line I tether from averages 80+GB a month and I make maybe 2 calls and a handful of texts from it occasionally, its line is almost entirely data use and I've never gotten a call or letter, but I very rarely use any roaming unless a tower is down. I've been with sprint for almost 15 years or so and have been eating their data for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as all my snacks in between for as long as I can remember. As the phones have gotten better my data use has increased. Right now on my personal line I'm at ~73gb and just a little past halfway thru my billing cycle this month. My wife's line is at ~41gb, my work line which is the one I tether my whole house from is at ~97gb and the 4th line which my dad uses is around 60gb so far this month. Sprint only really cares about roaming data cuz they pay a pretty penny to whoever's tower you're roaming on vs. their own network which costs them a few tenths of a cent per GB for you to use. They make a few thousand percent profit on in network data. If you used 10 GB of data a month their cost to profit ratio would be a $1.50 cost to $8.50 profit just from your premium data charge, plus the over and above profit they make off of your actual plan. Its surprisingly cheap for them to provide in network data, but roaming data they pay whoever the tower is leased from around 15ยข per GB versus about .15 of a cent per gb of in network data

[Q] Tethering to Xbox Live is painfully slow 50kbps. Other tethering is fine. Ideas?

I live in a 3G/HSDPA area and usually get around 2-2.5Mbps on my phone when doing a speedtest. I frequently use my phone (a nexus 5) to tether to my PC as we don't have home broadband (can't get it, even though I'd damn love to, as don't have the homeowners permission and despite multiple requests they deny permission as they're old fashioned and don't believe in internet!! Shocking yea but that's a tale for another day...anyway...back to my problem). I've tethered to my PC and iPad over the last 30 days, downloaded updates and streamed online videos without a single lag or buffer...well maybe the occasional one but it's ok, really! However, I got my xbox one today and as you probably know, unlike the xbox 360, game updates are 1-2gb compared to 8-256mb. I do have a 15gb mobile broadband plan which works fine on xbox live but there's no way in hell I'm using that to download 1-2gb updates lol so I go to use my unlimited mobile data on my phone and it immediately locks me down to 50kbps. I suspect the carrier is throttling me. The weird thing is I turned off tethering, rebooted my phone, enabled tethering again and connected to my iPad to download 1gb worth of app updates and it downloaded at full speed. When I tether to my PC it usually doesn't throttle me either. What is it with xbox live that it doesn't like? Any hack or tweak you guys know for android that can prevent the carrier from throttling me? I'm on the Three UK network for your information. Just to confirm, I don't get throttled on my 15gb broadband plan but that's no use to me when I am faced with 1-2gb game updates....updates of that size would eat my monthly allowance in no time at all! So yea...I'm frustrated right now as this xbox one refuses to let me play games without updating them. Yea...it forces me to update. Kinda gay, right?
P.s. I know you internet n00bs probably have unlimited home broadband like many other people. It's not the fact I'm refusing to get home broadband...I want it really badly! But i can't have it without the homeowners permission and I'm not in a position to find alternate accommodate yet so there's no way around this for me unless I can stop the carrier from throttling me to 50kbps coz those speeds are unusable! I don't wish to game online using mobile tethering...for that I'm happy to use my non-throttled broadband account, I just want to tether to download the updates!
Ok just had the shock of my life when trying to install Forza 5. It wants to download a whopping TEN GIGABYTE (10GB) update. That's insane! I was expecting 1-2gb and the prospect of that was bad enough. Well, it's just got worse. It wants to download 10GB! Is there any solution you guys know of...at all...to stop the carrier throttling me on android? Or am I fighting a lost cause here?

T-mobile Prioritization?

Rant incoming..... tl;dr .... 20GB in 8 days, "data guzzler list" getting 0.1mbit now during peak hours and 5mbit on off-time....
So was happily watching youtube videos when got hit with that buffering. Noticed I was getting poor internet connection, saw full bars. Ran speed test, a whopping .10 mbps... Called them, they said I'm on the prioritization list because in 8 days, racked up 20GB which means I'm in the 95~ percentile in data usage on my unlimited data plan... Went through the phone, sure enough... 2-4GB per day by youtube... Still, not even a nice warning, and they treat me like it's my fault I was actually using my unlimited service... Even during the call, they were like, "just tell him he's on the list and nothing can be done. He used too much data...."
Well first thing I did was turn off high quality streaming because that's a gas guzzler for sure.... But I would have loved a warning text that I'm using too much data, but not even that... Anyone else noticed this? Funny thing, went through 2 customer reps both never saw that before, and tech support said they are doing something new.... Fun times.... They are not "throttling, they are making your data less of a priority", but 0.1 mbps consistent throughput for a minute... that's not prioritizing, that's throttling...
Oh, and best yet... they thanked me for my 11 years being a customer with them... Yea... >_>

Yeah thats BS. As long as you are not doing P2P sharing they should not throttle you . If you have a true unlimited plan that should be exactly what it is. I understand that they are not home internet providers but if they provide you a service that is unlimited then throttle you then there must be a fair use policy . I know people using 5 to 10 times the data u are and not getting throttled. 2 to 4 GB a day is high but in reality its only about one and a half full length HD movies . Im surprised they did not restore you speeds and let you off with a fair warning . I miss the good old days where they throttled at the phone and and not at the server. On my GS2 you could delete the throttle folder and make a few other tweaks and never get throttled even on a 1 GB Plan . What area do you live in . are you in the USA?
the carriers need to make it clearer about what "unlimited" really means, but, on the other hand, I dont think anyone should be using their cell phones as their primary means of accessing the internet, unless the carriers come out and say that they are ok with that.
cant you use your home internet/wifi for all this heavy duty data consumption?
yeah, a warning would have been nice, but c'mon dude, thats a pace of over 80 gigs of data per month, and that is just crazy...
and yeah, there are worse offenders than you, but even so..
20 GB is pretty unreasonable, so I don't disagree with them.
Yea, I know 20GB in 8 days was high, which is why I'm going to restrict youtube's HQ streaming... but still... Even with FCC latest decision and then Tmobile is doubling down on throttling to control both legit and illegal data... that's ridiculous....
Also, no warning... I had to find out from calling in.... I usually call them because I got dropped out of the LTE and they need to "register" me back onto the tower... And I check my monthly usage.... 50GB a month.... Recently, with this new phone... HQ streaming really is HQ streaming.... Because I was on a M8 before and had no issues... I might as well live on the 4g only band.... because apparently only LTE is being metered....
I waste that much data in like a month and i think is a lot lol

Yea, I know. But at the same time, you got people hitting 100+ GB, but for me, never near that, got placed with those people.... And It's all because of stupid youtube, I really wish they have an audio only/screen off mode where I just listen to debates/talk shows on there and apparently the video portion is 1080p... >_>
If Google Fi is a hit, it's only going to get worse!
I have the same issue. Called them up, they told me prioritization and for me to use less data. Sigh.

It was all fun and games for a few years until they reached their goal of users, now is back to boring company like the rest.
i saw an "unlimited data" ad by sprint one time, and while reading the fine print (because thats what i do when im eating breakfast) i saw that it said "Unlimited does not mean Unreasonable" so Tmobile isnt the only one doing this. Now i want to go above 20gb because i have unlimted 4g with tmo as well
I have done 70+ gb and never had any issues. I think this issue is more how much of a impact you create with avaliable bandwidth for other tmobile user and the length of the impact. I'm sure it's all automated so even the tmo reps may not know why or how it was triggered.
I'm one of those Data Juicers... Lol
I'm on my first week with TMO and have 42gb so far. Hope I don't run into any "prioritization" schemes.
No room for complaints about prioritization. How much would have getting past even the 5gb mark cost on Verizon or att? Why should you and people like you use up all the bandwidth with YouTube and I get slower speeds for normal web surfing? Just stop being a habitual data over user and they will ignore the couple times a year you use way to much data. My wife uses 40gb a month give or take (still to much use if you ask me) and has never been pushed to the back of the line.
*edit*
I should make my self a little clearer. Using YouTube a lot isn't a bad thing, using it for listening to music all day is just stupidity. I don't care how bad you guys are going to flame me on this because you know deep down its true. Get Spotify pay the 8 bucks a month and boom your data usage will drop dramatically. I understand its unlimited data but you should use it responsibly because your not the only one using the bandwidth.

what could you possibly be doing on a cell phone that uses 42 gigs in one week???
I would have to tether to use that much data. I usually end up around 10 to 20 gigs a month which is plenty for me. My only gripe over this is not specific to Tmo, IMO they and everyone else should not be able to use the word unlimited unless it is actually unlimited and it should be right out there in front, not in the fine print. The word unlimited cannot be qualified, unlimited means there are no limits, if there is a limit it is not unlimited. In other words tmo (and all the rest) should say "Up to 60 gigs full speed and throttled but unlimited throttled data after". They should only be able to use the word unlimited if the data is actually unlimited. Tmo 4g data is not unlimited but they are using that wording and that should change.
BTW, not trying to tell others what they should use or say how much data is enough or how much it should cost, just that the actual data and speeds you are going to get for the money you agree to pay should be clearly worded in the big print.
agreed; their sales and marketing people are afraid to give any competitor an advantage over them, by actually stating in their TOS how much data is actually "unlimited", so instead, they punish the consumers with arbitrary slowdowns and throttling when they feel they are being abused..
and, even though I think that anyone using 42 gigs a week of data is definitely violating the vaguely worded TOS that t mobile and Sprint employ, this wont stop until some legal action is taken against the carriers or the data hogs who are abusing their networks..
I'm picking up a s6 tomorrow and I'll ask them to print out the agreement in full and point out the data usage part. When I get time I'll scan and upload it so everyone can look at it. I'm sure in the tos that you agreed to it will state almost word for word what you think it would say. If it didn't you know a ambulance chasing lawyer would have a class action lawsuit right now.
thanks, I havent looked at mine in a long time, probably because I stay on wifi almost all the time, and my data useage is never more than a gig or 2..
