GPS Reminder app? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there such an app to where I can input an address and when ever my gps catches me close to that address, it reminds me I needed to do something at that address.
Scenario : I need to get something from my parents house next time I am over there, but since I do not know what that will be, can my phone remind me next time the gps sees me there?

I have Tasker set up to turn on my wifi when I am in close proximity to my house, so I am sure there's probably a way to do this as well. I'm sure you could have it read a message back to you or play a generic .wav file reminder.

geonote , find it at the market, its very good

pretty neat idea. ill have to check out that geonote app. also, this would be really easy with tasker.

lost evo. anyway of finding it?

Somehow I managed to lose my evo and its nowhere to be found. Its fully rooted running dc 3.2.3. Is there any way of locating it or remoty turning on gps? I don't have any special software for that type of stuff. any help is appreciated
sprint used to have the family locator thing where all the lines on your account could be located by their gps signal. dunno if they still have it or not, i haven't used it in a while.
I tried that but gps needs to be turned on. Is there a way to remotely turn on gps?
Any chance sprint might be able to help? the phone seems to be on, no one has made any calls with it or otherwise used it so I'm pretty sure it's somewhere where I can find it. I wonder if Sprint will (I say will because I'm pretty sure they can) try to find the phone via their cell towers or at least an approximate location.
i know windows mobile had software that could turn on gps and reply back to your other phone via sms its gps coordination... but the software had to be built into the rom so its not uninstallable.
ive been wondering if theres an app or similar for android.
just in case someone swipes my phone i'd like to be able to track it.
would be nice if a dev had this feature built into a rom so noone can disable or remove it.
Sprint could help but won't (I have tried). Family locator needs sms verification with user of phone before it will activate. Unless you had installed an app to track it you don't have any options. Look on craigslist or ebay.
Next time use "wheres my droid" or some other such software. Unfortunately google thinks that having an app switch on gps is a privacy issue so they disabled that api in 2.x, so you are really out of luck even if you had software.
I have quick sshd installed on mine so hopefully will be able to remote in and run ase, delete files, etc.
Sprint Family Locator will work. It doesn't require user authorization and it does not require the phone to have GPS turned on. Try it. The only thing it will do is send the phone a message saying that SFL has been activated (or the phone has been located via SFL).
Finally got family locator to find my phone but it's giving me a 0.5 mile radius by some apartments complexes that i didn't go to yesterday. I lost it somewhere by a lake and I guess someone's found it and taken it home. I'm hoping they'll turn on the GPS antenna so I can get a more precise location.
Edit: I was under the impression that GPS needs to be turned on because CC told me it does. When i started the service it wasn't working properly and locating my phone so I really thought that GPS needs to be on. I tried it out on some other phones on my account today and it wasn't locating any of them so i called CC and they did some things over there and locator started working. I probably could have found it yesterday if locator worked properly.

glad to see you've found your phone...lolz.
half mile radius doesn't really qualify as finding it

That sucks man. Did you have a password on it?
I have three apps for this sort of thing:
The previously suggested "Wheres My Droid". If you lose your phone, you can send an SMS to it with a custom phrase that will turn on the sound to ring for up to 5 minutes.
Lookout Mobile. A combo of GPS location, antivirus and contact/picture backup. You can log in through the website to locate.
Mobile Security. The best, IMO. Log into the website and it will locate the phone with options to lock, send a text, send a sound alarm. Key feature: If you are rooted, you can flash the app to your system of your phone, which means it won't appear in your app drawer and can't be uninstalled...its invisible unless a thief has the expertise to pull it off the phone with ADB. Was able to successfully pinpoint the address the phone is currently at.
In conjunction with these, you might want to download 'Protector'. This is basically an app that password protects certain apps/functions to your liking. I use it to require access to the market (so apps like lookout cant be uninstalled), system apps (like astro or estrongs...same idea) and sensitive $ data like Mint.com and Paypal apps.
I like redundancy on issues like this so thats why I have all three apps going. Also, always leave your GPS on. There is no battery drain issue unless an app is actually utilizing it, and that will be obvious because the GPS logo will appear in the notification bar next to the 3g/CDMA/Power icons.
You can make your phone pretty useless to anyone who isn't you by using the above ideas.
Pintail is always the first app i install, just text Locate and a pin number and it will send you the address of where its at. Coordinates would be nicer though.

Wow they must have changed that policy then. I had lost a treo 600 back in the day and they told me it needed to activate it with a code sent to the handset. Good to know they changed that and I apologize for being inaccurate.
Family locator works on phones without gps by using tower triangulation. But as you see it isn't all that accurate.
Good luck!
* I use ' tasker' to listen for sms and it will send sms back with location and ip. I can then ssh into phone and do various things there.

Just another thought. If you have a bluetooth headset you could wander around there and see where it connects. 10 meters?
sorry to hear of your misfortune.
yes.. only way to work.. is to have an app that helps you loaded before you loose it.
Half mile radius, sounds like tower triangulation to me. NOT GPS.
This is a warning to all.. spend a little time to find an app you like to do this ASAP. you will feel better.
there are few in the Market. I use Wavesecure.
these apps use Text messages to activate functions on your phone. Can give you a lot of control over the phone.
1. Checkout Craigslist or Ebay to see if your phone is listed.
2. If you can not find it online. Then tell sprint it is lost.. so it will be turned off so they can not use it or sell it.
3. I hope you have insurance that covers loss.

that is a good idea.. but battery on evo will not last long...it might be dead by now or very soon.
Seriously, drop everything and invest into some sort of software and set it up properly so you won't be in a ****ty situation like this. Now I gotta go hunting on ebay/craigslist and drop another $400... FML.
another $400? This is why people should buy insurance. at the most it is $100.
FYI depending on how long you have had the line open, you can still add insurance to the phone within 30 days I believe. Most likely wont help you but you never know.

[Q] Wi-fi disconnecting on AOSP (Non-Sense) ROMs.

After trying out several ROMs I have noticed that my wi-fi randomly disconnects, but only for (Non-HTC/Sense) ROMs.
I'm running OpenDesire at the moment, which I really like, but the arbitrary disconnetion of wi-fi is driving me crazy.
As far as I can tell, it has done this with the other Non-Sense ROMs I have tried as well, and I have no idea why.
Wi-fi does switch on, but (part of) the problem _seems_ to be that the phone has trouble actually getting an IP; other than that, and why it does this, I have no idea.
The settings (in *#*#4636#*#* test mode) are basically the same as they are for, say, the official HTC Sense OTA or Pinky, for which wi-fi seems to work perfectly.
Although, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at/for...
Anyone have any ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated
It's not having an issue with getting an IP, it's having an issue with authentication.
The first thing I noticed with these roms is they do not re-prompt to enter a password again if you have mis-typed it at all. This leads to wpa_supplicant client to effectively force a connection and get a refusal in quick succession. The wpa_supplicant client on the phone then disables the connection until you step in and either choose to reconnect or edit the password manually.
The issue we are having is related to this;
After being connected to WiFi for a fair period of time, it re-authenticates with the base station/router as it's supposed to do.
From memory, the re-auth happens every 60 minutes and most decent routers are able to change this.
At this point, the client (phone) tries to re-auth and fails (for whatever reason). Instead of prompting for a password (as it should do). It tries 3 times in total and stops.
After the last failed attempt, it disables the connection that it failed to connect to and jumps back to mobile data (if available).
So. Yes, there is a major issue with the wpa_supplicant in non-sense roms. Could we get the devs to investigate this, as it's really getting to be a major pain in the arse!
I see... Thanks for the clarification. Nicely explained.
So, short of jumping ship to Sense, there's really not much I can do then, other than wait for someone more skilled than me to come up with a solution?
No workaround, third party app, router setting or anything?
Unknown at this moment in time.
I'm investigating this in my own limited knowledge of Android and Linux systems, so far I've not come up with anything solid.
As far as settings you can change on your router, it all depends on your router and it's firmware.
I've got three different routers here:
A) Trendnet TEW-435BRM v4.00.07 : No way to change Key Renewal length
B) Linksys WRT160Nv2 v2.0.03 : Able to change Key Renewal length
C) MZK-MF150 v1.00.16 : Able to change Key Renewal length
Check your router, try increasing the length and have a play around. It's not a fix, the issue is either in the AOSP kernels or the wpa_supplicant module.
My NetGear WNR2000 does not seem to have any (easy) way of configuring Key Renewal Length, but I'll have a look around. Else, I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and go with Sense for a while...
At least now I know it's not just me. That's always comforting.
Thanks for the help acolwill!
No problems at all.
I have been trying to locate an app that will automatically restart the WiFi if a disconnection takes place, however, I've yet to find one :|
Anyone out there know of one?
eham, there's an app on the market called "WiFi Auto ReEnabler"
Give it a try, as it may well be the answer you've been looking for!
Sounds very promising indeed. Will get right on that.
Tried an app called Wifi Fixer, but that was a bust. Actually somehow managed to make things worse (for me, anyway).
Thanks for the tip. I'll be back with an update...
Ok, so "WiFiReEnabler" does actually do just that; re-associate with the network everytime the screen wakes. Unfortunately, what it doesn't do is stay resident.
It will let itself get killed by the system very easily, so I still have had a few times where I had to manually deactivate and activate wifi because WiFiReEnabler didn't have my back.
If the developer could make this a helper app/system service, this seems like it could be a decent workaround though.
I did however find an app called "Fix My WiFi" (£0.99 in Market) that seems to take care of the problem nicely, and quietly, so far (about 16 hours and counting, fingers crossed).
It also has some options to set different levels of aggressiveness, and notifications, which I like.
I also found a free app called "Wifi Reassociate" that seems to address the same issue. Haven't gotten around to trying it yet, as Fix My Wifi still seems to be doing its job.
Still, a tip for anyone with the same problem.
With that (hopefully) outta the way, I'm off to celebrate the anniversary of my birth.
Be well, friends.

Wifi On/Off with TASKER???

Whats the best easiest way for this?? Ive tried a few from searching on google, directs me to droidforums.com but they seem to not work that well. Plus, some people use variable set, using %HOME = 1 and all that. Others go straight to the point of wifi near - on but somehow it doesnt work right. Can anyone help me? i just need a WiFi Near really, to toggle and connect to my HOME. I use Y5 app in the market, which does it but its not always reliable, doesnt always activate it ON/OFF but its exactly what I want but with TASKER, since it seems a hell of a good app!! Thank you.
can you not set up a "in range of" style thing? Like it goes off your GPS when you are near home and it will then turn on wifi.
I don't have the app and just did a quick skim of the website... sorry if this doesn't help

Block Internet for a single app on a single network

Hi,
I use tTorrent to download big files when I'm at work (we have a fiber connection, there's no problem). I set it on Wifi only, but I owuld like to prevent it from downloading from my home network (I don't have a lot of bandwidth allocated). Is this possible? I know that the app can't do it (didn't expect more anyway) but is there an app who could do that for me?
I tried blocking the tTorrent port on my router but I can't figure out how :/
Thank you!
This sounds like a job for TASKER!! lol AMAZING app and really one of the main reasons I put up with a lot of android BS, and not move to the iPhone. Be warned Tasker is scary at first since it SOOO powerful, however after some reading and youtube videos I was up and running, examples of what I have it do.
on random times of the day Tasker will send a text to my wife explaining how much I love her.
When I launch camera, or gallery the brightness of the screen goes all the way up, when I launch the camera NFC enables.
When I launch a web browser screen rotation turns on, when I leave it turns off.
at 7pm the phone goes in to auto reply mode explaining to any would be textures and callers I'm working out and I'll get back to them soon
There's one I found that if your going over 5MPH auto text will turn on and will explain to people your driving.
Sleep mode after 12pm and off at 7am
Tasker & astrid make for a wonderful location based reminder team!
Locale is mch like tasked only VERY VERY simple, and you will be frustrated at the fact that you cant to 1 tenths of what Tasker does. lol
-------------------------------
these are very basic commands, there are MANY MANY more.
Dont forget to hit THANKS!
You could also do this at the network level. Set up a static reservation for your phone so that it always gets the same ip address. Then block the port(s) that the program uses for that ip assess address. Net result is that the firewall will prevent the connection.

LBE Privacy Guard is your best solution. It has individual app firewall, and app permission manager.
That tasker app sounds like it makes life a little easier. I'm going to have to check that out

How does it behave without a BT connection?

Work no longer let's us carry our phones with us there for the 360 will spend a lot of its time with no phone connection. I'm assuming it will still keep time? I only ask because an early Sony smart watch couldn't. What else? Can you still set timers use the stop watch? Can you use apps that don't require Internet connection like a calculator?
Anyone?
I don't have one but if it's like the g watch you will be able to still use the functions you asked about.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
That's what I would expect.. But you never know these days. I just didn't want some usless brick that says please sync all day.
Thanks
Yes, I can still check the time, set a timer, use the stop watch, etc. I haven't found a calculator app that works on the round display, yet.
It seems like voice recognition doesn't work, but anything you can run from the menu does. So you can set an alarm, timer, etc, though you have to use the touch interface which may not be as flexible.
I hope they give the option for offline voice recognition at some point. I think it would be very advantageous to be able to do basic tasks like setting reminders, alarms and creating notes etc. these could easily then sync once the phone is reconnected. There's no hardware reason why this wouldn't be possible it will just require implementation.

Also, if you put it in airplane mode, it doesn't even give you the voice prompt screen... instead it immediately shows the list of activities / apps you can do. Voice on that screen does not work at all. Too bad!

I'm pretty sure this is not possible. When you first take it out of the box, it asks for a language, after selecting one, no swiping, tapping, or anything else can get it from a screen saying to download the Wear app on your phone. It simply will not do anything until it does.
That's my experience, anyway. I couldn't get anything until my phone synced.

Yeah I talked to motorola customer service and they said that it won't ask that if it doesn't detects a android phone nearby. Hope this is true.
You have access to all of your watch apps like still. All apps that depended on your phone (like google now) won't work anymore. Basically what you'd expect.
