Noob questions!
I perm rooted with the visionary method and have S-off.
Before permrooting I had visionary.sh run the script to automatically overclock me to 1200mhz at boot.
Now that I have perm root how do I make the overclock stick? I can still overclock with gscript, but running setcpu doesn't gime me the option to go over 806mhz without running gscript first. I just wanna boot up and have the clock speed set.
Secondly, what is fastboot and how can I implement it... I'm assuming (from what I've read) it just drastically cuts down the boot time, which would be awesome.
Thanks!
1) I think you need to install a kernel that is capable of overclocking. Try BaconBits in the dev section.
2) Fastboot has nothing to do with boot times. It is a protocol by which you can communicate with your phone to flash different partitions when there are new radios, bootloaders, kernels, etc.

baconbits is the most stable overclocking kernel right now in my preference.
but i believe youre referring to fast boot as in what is used in the desire z roms, correct? where your phone is put into this "hybernating stage" once turned off and takes about 4 seconds to turn on. is that what youre referring to?

Yep, that's the fastboot I meant.
Is there a way to install bacon bits without a computer yet?
If you want to overclock you just have to flash an overclocking kernel there's two available.
Fastboot is only available on the desire z rom which you can also flash, but you'll lose stock FroYo

Have you tried installing the ROM Manager app? There's a repository in there that allows you to install the Bacon Bits without having to use a computer. That's how I did it.
As for your overclock, assuming you're on a permanent root, just use SetCPU and check the check-box that says "Set on boot." Every time you boot your phone, whatever setting it was at will automatically set it to that specific clockspeed. I also recommend using profiles in SetCPU to manage your overclocking shenanigans.

I have just done this and i can confirm im stable at 1.7ghz
Warning: This will change your Mac Address to 00.11.22.33.44.55. This will not usually cause problems, but if it does make sure you take the usual precautions before flashing
I dont take any credit for this, just putting up the guide
And i am also not responsible for your phone blowin' up)
First download this
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11401539/G2-Fast.zip
PS... It will bork your radio;( Because its based on the G2 Kernel and that has no radio;P
Extract the files to your desktop
put the bcm4329.ko on the root of your sdcard then reboot your phone holding down the trackpad as the phone restarts, this will take you into fastboot.
you then go to your pc command line and type
fastboot flash zimage [zImage1805Mhz] [make sure your in this path!]
then when you reboot you will have no wifi, you then need to add this code in the term emulator on your phone
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system [enter]
cp /sdcard/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko [enter]
mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system [enter]
You will now have wifi, and a kernel which is lightening fast at 1.8ghz, im stable at 1.7, 1.8 freezes for me;( there is also a zimage for 1900ghz, but was very unstable for me when i tried...
Confirmed working on a Sense ROM, If your using the G2 ROM then just flash Bacon Bits... Bacon Bits works fine with a G2 ROM and will get you up to 1.497ghz
But i think this works with a G2 ROM as well, as its a G2 kernel that will bork your radio
Good Luck Guys

Maybe some benchmark results? That would be very nice
Edit:
Oeps.. I'm sorry..
There is already a benchmarktest (G2).

Hey JD .
Are You experience any disadvantages?
with oc at 1.7
What ROMs does this work on ? The initial posting doesn't say, so does it work on any ROM on the DZ ? e.g. the G2 ROM, Asian ROM, etc ? I'm not clear if this is a complete ROM flash.

Not really mate,
Maybe faster battery drain when at the top speeds, But i have it at 1ghz for most of the day, then when i need the power, I just tell Scotty in the power room to juice it up;P
Beam me up Scotty to 1.7ghz;P

1) Its a kernel flash, so no its not a ROM flash, you will keep your same ROM.
2) If im talking about this kernel borking the radio, you can presume im using Sense because it has radio and the G2 doesnt

ok, well based on the fact that a member here with an Asian DZ had problems with the update thingy that gtrab did, I was wondering if they might also have problems with this ? We seem to be treating as all stock DZs the same in this forum in the most part, and different ones have different ROMs/kernels - e.g. Europe vs Bell vs Asia.
Can this be done directly on the phone? For example with ROM Manager and Clockwork? I don't like messing with cables, connecting to PC, etc.

Nice to see one other person realizing the potential of the Vision's CPU
So I had my phone previously overclocked to 1.9ghz back when it was new and hot stuff but then decided to install bacon bits to get my led notification working. Totally overlooked that the bacon bits would replace my OC with the 1.5ghz... I was ok with it since I just want 1Ghz. Shortly after I realized my wifi tether was not working with baconbits and reverted to my previous backup which is pretty much a stock root.
A bit later I attempted to do the kernel flash again and it just sent me to a boot loop. Reverted back again.
Tried OC Neon got a boot loop...
Reverted.
Tried the flippys new zip...boot loop...
Reverted....
Tried new OC neon...Boot loop...
what the sh!t!
Any suggestions I may have overlooked would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
EDIT: Just noticed that restoring the boot & system only, brings the device to working order... If anyone requires any extra info about what I am running on, I'd be more than happy to share.
bump for some help?
Not sure what is going on here, but how were you overclocked previously? Had you already successfully flashed a custom kernel before or were you running a script. If you were using a script, perhaps it modified a system file that is incompatible with new kernels (causing the boot loop).
On my successful overclocking, I flashed flippys first 1.9ghz kernel using adb.
Well, I'm not sure what could help then. Did you try wiping the cache/dalvik-cache when flashing a new kernel (don't expect it to do anything, but you never know)? Maybe try restoring a backup from before you installed the 1.9GHz kernel just to see if flashing a new kernel works when everything is stock...
Oh, just thought of something that maybe should have been obvious (if it is the cause anyway). Are you using a script or app like SetCPU to overclock? The kernels you are trying do not support 1.9 GHz, so trying to set that at boot with them may cause your boot loop. Try setting your max frequency lower (maybe back to 806 MHz to be safe) before flashing a new kernel to see if that fixes thing...
yeah I'm not using a script or anything right now. I've tried a full wipe and nothing seems to be taking. I'm gonna try to flash the older kernels and see what happens later tonight. Hoping for the best :]
Hi,
Finally I rooted my device. Next step - battery saving.
I can use an app like SetCPU or franco.Kernel. Both do the same: have tools to manage CPU work, profiles etc.
Kernel looks very interventional.
While using an app looks more safe (you can always go back to original settings and uninstall the app).
What would you recommend to do next (after rooting) if I want to save my battery (and stay with Stock ROM)?
PS: I'm a heavy internet user, I have apps installed which are all the time connected to internet (facebook, skype etc.).
As far as battery savings go, Franco's Kernel is the definite way to go. I've seen some pretty crazy battery stats from some users who are using the kernel.
I flashed the kernel last night and charged my phone all night so I will be testing it out today. Remember, you may not see the battery stats you want at first, give it a few days for the kernel to bake into the phone and gather stats.
As far as SetCPU is concerned, you will only be able to change the CPU settings, whereas by using Francos Kernel, you can not only change CPU, you can undervolt the battery, and also turn off one of the cores so that it can save battery life. There are many more things you can do with the kernel than you would be able to do by using SetCPU.
My opinion: Don't waste your 3 or 4 dollars on SetCPU, flash the kernel, I think you will be a lot more happy with the battery savings along with all the different customizations.
By the way, if you're a heavy internet user, I'd strongly suggest going with a kernel (particularly franco's) as you should get amazing battery life while the screen is on. I've seen user stats of up to 4 hours of on-screen time. Pretty insane.
+1 with franco kernel app..it's getting better every update

OK. You won. I will go for Franco kernel?
Is there a guide how to install Franco kernel? Step by step for dummies.
Or is there the only way by purchasing Fraco app from Market for 2$ (I don't remember what's the price).
Is this non free APP must have or not?

No, you must have the kernel flashed in order to install Franco's app. (After you flash the kernel, install the app, it's worth it.)
Back on topic, get on your phone's web-browser and come to this website. Go to Galaxy Nexus CDMA development, and Francos Kernel will be on the first page on the GN CDMA forum.
From here, click on Francos Kernel thread, and scroll down through his very first post until you see a link for Franco's Kernel Milestone #2. This is the newest stable kernel and is in a .zip file form that you can install directly from your phone. Select Milestone #2, and your phone will automatically download the zip.
Next, you must reboot into recovery. Turn your phone completely off, then hold down volume up, volume down, AND the power button at the same time and this will boot you into your bootloader. From here you will see a green START menu. Use the volume DOWN key and press down until you see Recovery. Once you see recovery, press the power button to boot into recovery.
Next, you need to go to *install from .zip*. After you have selected that, go to /download and you should find francos kernel. From here, use the volume keys to scroll down to *Yes, I want to install...*, and press the power button to select the kernel. Your phone will start downloading the kernel.
After the kernel is installed, press *Go Back* and then select reboot. Your phone will now have Francos Kernel.
Hope this helped.
Just noticed your location and you have stock 4.0.4? I'm guessing your GSM? If so, don't follow these instructions, go to GSM development instead. Epic Fail.
Search daemon controller and try if the app works with your kernel. The daemon are very fast to change the CPU clock and governor ..

Yes. I'm with GSM version. I need to update my signature.
I can install zip files via recovery (I already know how to do that). So I will search for Franco kernel GSM version.
Well I was running CM7 or something along those lines, and I wanted to go back to my regular stock rom, so I flashed the PB31 and went back. Well now my phone regularly semi-reboots back to the white HTC screen and then ever so once in a while will restart from the Droid start up screen. Is there a patch to just get there to stop, and if not if I just applied the S-On patch and downloaded the firmware upgrade would that be all I need to do (just flash the S-On not the entire PB31?)

Arr you still rooted? What is your goal, to be stock rooted or unrooted, s-on or off? What hboot and android version are you currently on?
Yea I'm still rooted, I re-rooted after flashing the stock PB31 so that I could remove the bloatware. I want to keep some form of Stock Rom so that I can keep all my Facebook contacts in my contacts because you can't do that with any other ROMs that I've used. My goal is to have my phone whatever it needs to be to quit returning to that white screen every couple of minutes. Android Version is 2.2 (If I unroot and S-On I'll just go to the latest OTA which at the moment I have blocked from popping up) and the HBoot version is 0.92.0000. Also a lot of my apps keep force closing, I've ran Fix Permissions so I figure returning to Stock somehow will fix that. My CM kept force closing everything and started running super slow which is what forced me to go back stock.

I would not go s-on for any reason. It will be much harder to get s-off again once your on the newest android version. You actually have to downgrade to 2.2 froyo to get s-off again. I would go into clockwork and format everything in mounts and storrage menu except emmc and sd. Then flash the latest 4.08.605.15 ruu thru hboot http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip. Then you will be up to date, complete stock, and can root again by flashing cwm http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot, and then superuser http://dinc.does-it.net/Superuser/SuperUser_3.0.7.zip thru cwm. You could also flash my Touch Of Blue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492720 rom based off of 4.08.605.15. Its mostly stock with a few enhancements, and all the facebook stuff will work.
Yea I was looking through your rom earlier. I'm going to go ahead and download it and the kernel you're using. Can you give me some settings that will work well as far as performance and battery life (higher favor in performance). Do I still need to go and format all of that stuff if I take your rom/kernel route? Also could you give me a link on how to do the "ruu through Hboot update?"

My rom already has the gingertiny kernel built in, but has been updated from the version in the rom. So you may want to go to incredikernel.com and download the latest one and flash it.
Yes you still need to wipe everything before flashing the rom. You should always wipe before flashing any rom. The only time you dont need to wipe is if your flashing an update to a rom your already running.
I use lagfree governor, sio scheduler and am undervolted by 50 volts. I also use V6 supercharge with 512hp multitasking, bulletproof launcher, and nitro lag nullifier. However im all about battery life over performance. That being said, performance is still great with the abobe settings. If you want more performance, i would skip undervolting and use performance governor.
Here is guide on how to flash PB31IMG.zip images thru hboot. http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=79
I'm liking it a lot so far. About to go in and clear out a little more of the bloatware and flip on Smartass in Set CPU for the new GingerTiny. 1 suggestion or maybe I'm overlooking it, is there a way to change the red VerizonWireless in the pull down? Seems blue would flow better. I saw you were working on the "low space warning..." Also how do you flash the apk for the HTC lock screen? I flashed the OTA and it was a zip so I understood, but what about flashing an apk?

You can change the red to blue but you would need to use UOT Kitchen, google it. Its fairly easy.
You dont flash the apk you just place it in /system/app, give it the correct permissions rwx r-x r-x and correct owner and group both root. You can do this with a root file manager. If your familiar with adb, you can just boot to recovery, and then adb push the apk to /system/app and reboot. That being said in the third post of the rom there is a flashable zip you flash just like a rom, with no wiping.
The V6 supercharger works real nice on GB roms.

So i rooted my nexus 7 last weekend and i am using TWRP, stock kernel and i already tried CARBON NIGHTLY, paranoid android and now i am on liquid smooth rom, the system was slow on all 3 roms i tried (never had this on unrooted/stock) and had random crashes from the first boot. On liquid smooth its a little faster but its also the only one that keeps crashing the UI from time to time, not all the time but enough to be really annoying.
I am new to rooting and unlocking bootloader, this week has been a intense learning period for me on this so any help trying to solve the issue is welcome but keep in mind i am a noob on the subject

how much difference will it be if i intalled a different kernel ?????
will gravity box let me get rid of navbar and add pie controls?
I'm curious to know what your definition of slow is? Are you referring to the time to boot, accessing apps, etc? Not too sure what would be up with the crashes. I'm running SlimKat 4.0.0 with the ElementalX kernel, and it hasn't crashed once for me in the few months I've had the device.

Depends on the settings you choose for the kernel, in some kernels you will get a better battery life and better app performance, and some kernels are pure performance and some even focus on battery life, most though provide both features allowing the user to choose what to use and not use, so you can choose settings on custom kernels to reflect what you prefer.
For example, in my case, I use ElementalX and use its governor, set the max cpu to 1.7ghz and max gpu to 450mhz, then I use an app called Faux123 kernel enhancement pro (there are free alternatives out there) and make individual profiles for apps, so the apps that do not need heavy cpu or gpu, I can tell the kernel to throttle the cpu and/or the gpu to save battery, while I will set a 3d game for example, to max out (slightly overclock in my case) the GPU and CPU getting smoother performance. Of course, battery savings is app and usage dependent and YMMV.
ElementalX uses something called Aroma which lets you select various settings just before flashing it, it adds other functionality, like loadable module support, exFAT support. various governors, max read-ahead settings, and so on, they are outlined quite well in this thread.
Do not feel as though you must use a custom kernel if you have no need for any of the features and are happy with stock kernel performance, the stock kernel is a good kernel, it just has limitations.
And yes, gravity box will let you do as you asked, it includes pie controls of its own as well as a way to make the nav bar go away, in fact it is how I use it. If you find its pie controls too limiting, you can use LMT. Personally, I think the built-in GB pie controls are fine.
...keep in mind though GB is geared towards stock roms, it is not recommended nor supported to use GB with a custom ROM.

No problem.
You can get it from Google (the linked rom is stock 4.4.4 for N7 2013 wifi) , but you will have to open the flash-all.bat file with a text editor and remove the -w from one of the commands so it does not wipe your data. If you don't care about your data then you can use as is, you will of course need adb and fastboot setup on your pc, obviously.
I use multirom (highly recommended) so I use tassadars flashable stock zip (note, that zip is for N7 2013 wifi too, but is 4.4.3, you would have to update to 4.4.4 via ota or flash 4.4.4s system.img).
You can also use wug's toolkit and select the no wipe option. Make sure you select the correct device, the N7 2013 wifi is named Nexus 7 wifi v2 in his kit, the one without v2 is the old Nexus 7 2012.

With Tassadar's you can, but again, he does not have a 4.4.4 up yet, so I would strongly recommend at least for this time, use Wug's to flash 4.4.4 using the no-wipe option. But if you are more comfortable doing it via TWRP, you can wait for Tassadar to add a 4.4.4 flashable, or use his 4.4.3, and then extract the 4.4.4 system.img from Google factory image of 4.4.4 and fastboot flash that with a PC.
