[Q] nandroid question - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this is obvious or answered elsewhere but am I able to take a nandroid I made of my phone and transfer it to a new phone that is coming from tmobile? I have a stuck power button and am getting a warranty replacement. I think this would work but I didn't know if the nandroid would only be able to be used on the phone it was made on.

I know on the G1 that it saved to the SD, so it's conceivable.

if its from a g2 to another g2 that would be fine....but some other phone thats a NO..NO!! just make sure to do a data wipe....etc

It will be another g2. Thanks for the quick replies.

I just got a refurb evo with 2.1 loaded on it
Once I get RA Recovery back installed via TOASTS method - can I just restore my NAND Backup that I made before I took the other EVO in?
Thanks !

Probably. You may run into issues if the two devices are different hardware revisions or something, I don't know. But it can't hurt to try.

Just wanted to bump this to see if anyone else has actually tried this or not
Thanks
Absolutely have put my nandroid's on clients and friends phone. They liked my setup and was easier than flashing everything lol. Connect phone to puter. Disk drive obviously open nandroid folder. Move your saved nandroids individually from your computer to the very last folder of your nandroid folder on if SD card. Making sense, basically folders go nandroid, device number, backups. If you do not have a nandroid folder then after you do recovery do a quick backup and then u will have one on ur phone.

I would like to thank both of you for your quick replies
So I went to the sprint store earlier.. got my EVO replacement.. 002 with the glitter back and 2.1
cool..
Got home found out the USB port was busted..like bad...
Drove back up...they apologized... and then the tech grabedd another refurb box off the shelf..
This time.. White EVO 4g.. Brand new.. sprint stickers on it and everything.. 2.2..build date printed on the battery cover... the first refurb did not have that
Just now got back to rooted 2.2 with RA Recovery.. going to try to move the backup from the other NAND folder to the new one.. and hope 4g wont break
Thanks
again!
Don't forget to check your radios, just in case.

HELP!!! I destoryed my EVO and just got a new one.

Ok so I fell on my evo (Hard) and completely smashed it. It does not turn on at all.
My Smashed phone was rooted etc... I did have Nandroid back ups on that phone.
I just got my new one and put my old SD card in it. I go into recovery and I get a back screen with a small pic of a phone and a red "!"
Is there anything I can do to image my new phone to the same as my old one?

Have you already rooted the new phone?
1. You still need to root the new phone
2. If you made your nandroid with amon ra (which you should), make sure you delete the wimax.img from the old nandroid before you try to restore it on the new phone otherwise you will hose your 4G forever.
Finally, in the interest of minimizing issues, you're better off just setting up again from scratch in case there's some compatibility problem with your new evo and you'll end up having to work backwards to figure out what's wrong.

that's what I did....took all of 2 hours I think including the rooting process. Just start fresh or I bet you will run into some bugs.
Ok I just re-rooted the phone.
How to i delete the Wimax.img?

Go into the nandroid folder and delete the wimax file.
Again, it's not recommended to restore a nandroid from a different phone, if you still want to, it's up to you, just make sure you delete the wimax file.
hmmm sounds like I might be playing with fire if I do this so I guess I will just do it manual. Thank you for the heads up!
Can I have your broken phone? I want to do a flip.

I would not use a nand from another phone like others have said it will break your 4G FOREVER.

[Q] Can I use an old backup from micro SD on a new phone?

My old phone met an untimely death, but i was able to get the micro sd out and it has all my old nandroid backups on it. When i get my new incredible tomorrow, if i root it, can i then just flash a recent backup and will that restore eveything?
I'm going to assume you mean SD card, since CDMA phones don't have SIMs...
If so, then it should work, but make sure you have the same screen type as the old phone. However, it would probably be best to start fresh. A fresh start on a new phone can do wonders for your experience
Besides, there's root for the latest OTA now, so you can just update it all the way, root, and install whatever ROM you want. I, personally, would just start fresh, because the SD crad has all my data that I need anyway.
Hope I helped!
Do you mean micro sd, not sim card?
If your old phone was an incredible, you should be able to restore from an old backup.
Give it a try, I don't see how it could hurt.

From OP's posting history, it looks like it was an Incredible. I'm with you on this one brian, give it the old college try, as it were.
Im a little shot today, yes i meant micro sd. I had a droid incredible. Insurance is sending me a new one today. Im assuming/hoping it will have the same screen
Alright, try restoring from the backup after rooting and post back telling how it goes
NO. lol
do not use it.
read this post from my thread last week or so, when i got my new inc.

Read the post???
Its not a "problem". it was backed up on another device. whether its your nandroid or not, you're restoring it on another device. different ID. if they refurb ur old phone and someone else gets it, rooted or not, things can get messed up. i suggest just reflashing the rom and re set everything up and make a new backup, and trash the old one. if you back up apps with Titanium backup, theres not too much you'd have to go through and set other than settings/tweaks. even if you use adw launcher, you can save those settings to ur sd card as well..
Meant i read the link that you sent me.....thanks for the info. I have mostly everything backed up on titanium so ill just do that. thanks for the help. never knew anything about the Android ID

[Q] 4g broke and cant unroot HELP

Need help fixing 4g. Dont know when it stopped working but I have tried other roms and no luck. I have updated the radio then the profile and then the prl, I rebooted and then did the wimax and profile and prl and deleted some wimax file like one of the post said to do. No luck at all
I then tried to unroot to see if sprint would swap it out. When I try to unroot it tells me my battery is less then 30% and the other ruus say they dont see my phone. I dont know how I rooted it but I think it was with unrevoked not sure.
4g says scanning then connecting and back to scanning thats it. I use mikrom 4.61 right now
Did you try restoring a backup that had wimax working?
This epic reply brought to you by none other than my roxx'd out Evo.

Did you check your RSA keys with the app from the Market?
Is your battery less than 30%? If it is, plug it in. If you want to unroot, just dl the s-on zip, flash that, then place the PC36IMG.zip on the root of your SD Card and go to hboot and let it update.
I got it unrooted. I did the unrevoke on patch and tried like 5 zip files and one of them worked. So its stock but I don't think 4g is working yet ill know tomorrow when I goto work.
Now what is this thing from the market for? Never mind I looked it up. So if my key is lost what do I do then? Send it in?
And no I didn't have any backups

You should have to buy a new phone for being a moron. This is why every post about rooting reminds you to make a backup. You messed up live with the consequences. Sorry that is harsh, but this is preventable and all to common. People are way to over their heads messing with their phones like this. Now you will try to get your phone replaced and because of people like yourself replacement warrenties get more strict and costs go up. Sorry for the rant it just really annoys me that people keep ruining their phones because they are clueless.

Me? No I didn't. Everyone says to do a backup but when I found my backup it didn't help. Even the stock Rom didn't help. So if someone can tell me how to backup the wimax key that may help next time. But what I see is once its gone its gone, not even a backup will help. One thing I did learn is that I'm staying with mik's Rom lol.
I rooted my evo and now I see a wimax backup in the recovery. I have never seen that in the backup of the recovery before. But many things have changed so could it be something they added in down the road? I rooted the phone when it first came out. But now I see what you are talking about the backup. Maybe next time someone can fill me in on that and not be such a ass.

It's easiest to do with Amon-Ra recovery, which you can find out about installing if you do a search for Amon-Ra 2.3. When using Ra, go to backup, and just check "Wimax." It'll backup just your wimax. Now, just go into your nandroid folder on your sd and add a "-wimax_key"to the end of the file name so you can remember it, and then put that backup in multiple safe places.
Are you sure it's your phone that is having the issue? Sprint could just have an outage. I've had some janky 4g coverage lately.
If it is your phone, what recovery and version are you running? All the new recoveries backup the Wimax keys. It's not true that "once it is gone, it's gone." I imagine you ran Unrevoked to root it which installs Clockworkmod recovery, so your original nandroid backup should have the keys backedup already. In that case you'd just need to wipe and then restore the nandroid. Upon doing that, it will also restore your Wimax key. DL the Wimax key checker from the market as previously mentioned and verify your RSA (Wimax) key is present. You are good to go if so.

Thanks for the info. It was the phone for sure and I must have had the very first recovery version because I never seen the wimax backup before. Now on my new phone I see the wimax and other things I can backup. So on this one I checked them all and did my backup So that must be why the backup I found didnt help me. I never thought about checking to see if the recovery had updates.

[Q] Craigslist safety net

Just have a quick question. Recently bought a phone on craigslist and even though the guy did a factory reset before giving it to me, it still has some of his files and apparently TB backups on the internal. So, wanting to have a way of tracking this guy down if things go bad, say, I get blacklisted, I'd like to be able to do so. I think I know the answer but want to make sure, a nandroid will save all the information on the internal including TB backups, data files, EVERYTHING, right? As if you were restoring it to the exact state it was in when you made the nandroid, right? If I were to use Rom Manager to make a complete backup, is it going to backup the SD card too? I want to say the last time I made a backup on my old phone, it was HUGE compared to the previous backup. Meaning, almost 3 gigs I think as opposed to maybe an 800 mb one before. Or could that be because the old backup was ICS and JB is just that much bigger.
I think I'm confident in believing that just making a nandroid would be all I need since the SD card is mine and contains none of his information. I want to make sure just in case and thought this would be the best way to figure it out. I would have no idea how to search for a question like this lol. Thanks in advance folks.
Backup your files and then tell us.
I highly doubt that it would work. My reason being is that if I backed up my files on my exterbal sd card and say get another note 2 and restored the same bacjup on there it would just install it correctly. See where im going?
If it were to change the imei number from the other phone then there would be two phones running the same imei number... which is paradoxical. Not possible.
Theres always variable change though. It might work it might not.
I'm a consultant... ask me anything... I'll run away.

A nandroid backup is a exact image of your OS, kernel, and boot image, that doesn't make a backup of your titanium backups because your titanium backups are stored in your internal SD. The best thing to do is make a copy of your internal SD in your computer or just copy your titanium backup folder to your computer.
