Why don't you do a google search? There's a lot of information out there... even the 250 page Gingerbread user manual has been released.
It's basically just an improved UI with some extra **** added in.
it will make you more awesome and sexier to the ladies eyes, consequently, you will get laid like crazy bro....
I've never received an OTA while running a custom ROM. If you're running rooted stock, I'd keep my eyes peeled for news here before installing it, just in case it will do something to root.
Otherwise, I like to be surprised so I know very little about it other than near field communications will be built into Gingerbread.
Also, Gingerbread will go back in time and kill Hitler.

You won't get an OTA if you're running a custom ROM. But Cyanogen is bound to come out with a 2.3 version way before any official OTAs. I can't imagine it'll affect rooting etc because everyone running Cyanogen will want their phones to stay rooted.
Stevie have you misunderstood Sleef?
Official OTA updates could maybe affect ease of rooting,... when 2.1 landed for the Hero those who jumped in head first and applied the OTA got stuck for about 2 months until a new method was found.

Yeah, I was, no problem. But thanks for adding the additional info, which I should have done really - which is as you say that if course you're on a *stock* ROM and are rooted/S-OFF you should not accept/apply an OTA until it's been verified it won't lock you out of root/S-OFF !
any 2.3 ota will most certainly change the way we have to root, and it might be a while until someone works out how to do it again.
Custom 2.3 roms will be out pretty quick, even if its just a rooted stock so you have no real need to accept any ota that is offered once rooted.
It'll help you get a gf because somehow she'll realize that despite you not owning an iphone, you have gingerbread!
hehe
I probably could have been a little less vague.
Also, I'm positive that someone who knows what they're doing will take the OTA and make a flashable ROM out of it so eager folks can take it for a spin without actually applying the OTA themselves. 2.3 CyanogenMod shouldn't be too far behind.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but should the source code be made available, a dev could make a working ROM even before the G2 specific OTA, right?

Sorry this is a little off topic but I was on my cousins rooted droid x. I went on rom manager and there were much more providers for roms.

AFAIK,... The 2.3 source from Google is out,... but the 2.3 kernel from HTC is still needed before anything stable can be built (instead of trying generic builds not specifically for our device so all hardware/features will not work). HTC usually release their source after releasing the update.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong....

I don't think the source code is out yet, just the SDK. Shouldn't need a 2.3 kernel from HTC to make a stable build, I'm sure Cyanogen is up to the job.

Aha,... ok.
I assumed there would be a problem going from 2.6.32 (froyo kernel) to 2.6.35 (gingerbread) as that is where there were holdups on the Hero. Fingers crossed then.
.... a teeny bit OT... Has anyone heard of Bumptop? Or is it just me that didn't know what it was? Google took over earlier this year, and it does resemble the 3d gallery + the Android 3.0 tablet video. Just installed to my laptop,... Very nice, even without a touchscreen. Maybe that is what we have to look forward to next year?
Now that I know I can get ladies with gingerbread this will help me a lot -_-
But those of you that actually put real info thanks lol...I just getting more into android development and just want to make sure nothings gonna get messed up if I do get the ota update..cyanogen I'm sure is gonna have it ready shortly, seeings how they broke froyo pretty quick. In all entirty I was just making sure if wouldn't add s back ok somehow and increase security features.

Nice. Looks like someone just cooked a rom from the CM repo. They have a gingerbread branch, but work to merge the froyo tree into the gingerbread one is a largely manual process, and still much closer to the beginning than the end.
Don't let this get anyone's hopes up. CM7 is likely still pretty far away.

Yup, there should be some major steps made once Google releases the Nexus One 2.3 drivers. Then we'd have to wait for HTC to release (if it ever does) 2.3 drivers for other stuff we might need (like the cameras) or else we'd just get some hacked up alternatives, if that.
we need an HTC device with gingerbread... that would make things a lot easier.
Its gonna take maybe a month. They gotta get all the froyo stuff merged over. Then you'll start to see nightlys. I don't think anything from the nexus s is going to help us. Cyan got the cams working real fast for froyo by writing code himself.

Well, yea, not that. COME ON HTC!!!!! where's that source.
Most of you guys probably only want AOSP, but for those of you with extra time on your hands and with nothing else to do I present to you my first ROM, built from Shipped ROM.
The ROM is completely zipaligned, deodexed, and most Verizon Bloatware apk.s are removed. If there are any remaining, please let me know in the comments.
This should be one of the fastest Stock ROMs available. I know other people may have created the same kind of ROM, but please, don't flame on me.
Of course, this ROM still runs Android 2.2.1, however I hope to update that in future test version, as well as AOSP.
I also must warn you, the file size is a gigantic 240MB. If all goes well with this test ROM, AOSP will be next

this not meant to flame at all, but since gingerbread is official and has been for awhile, why would you be working on froyo at all?
its not like gb was a leak that has random bugs and froyo is a better option

Anyone out there interested in bringing Myns 2.3 over to the inc2??? i spoke with MYN and he said if i knew any inc2 dev that would be interesting in porting it he would be all for it. I freakin loved his rom on my original Inc but unfortunately i have no dev skills or experience Hopefully someone out there will want to tackle this project. i think it would be a great rom for us. PM me if anyone is interested. thx
I'd like to see it as well but I also have no experience.

Coming from the Eris forums, now comfortable with porting on the dinc2... Do you have a link to the rom? I'll take a look at it and see what I can do. Been looking for a first rom port, this sounds like a good start...

Here you go! If you can pull this off you will be my HERO. also Myn is very cool and responds to any question no matter how dumb they are lol.

by the way he did give his permission, but a message to him saying u talked to me would be appreciated im sure
Cool. Thanks for the link. I'll send him a pm and start on porting this over this week. I think the hardware hasn't changed a lot, so it shouldn't be too intense (I hope anyways...lol). Give me a few days and I'll post a progress update (or start a new thread if I get something worthwhile sooner...).

Still working on it... twopointtwo is a Froyo based rom, so I'm switching to the Evo 3D twopointthree and to see what I can get (Rather stick with the GB based ports, instead of rolling back...). The devices have some similarities, so I should be able to get a decent port (I hope). I've been fairly busy lately, so it probably won't be anything for the next couple weeks...

The Incredible version (twopointtwo) was Froyo, according to the information in the OP. The Evo 3d version is GB, 2.3.4, and the device specs are similar to ours, so it should work. I've got the port files swapped and will be testing today to see if it boots. With any luck, could have a working port by the end of the week at this rate...
I haven't tried the port file, so don't get your hopes up yet guys! I'll post another update later today and let you all know how the tests are going...

NP... First test just boots back into recovery, so I've got some more porting to do tonight to get it booting... Hoping to have a bootable test by tomorrow or Friday...
EDIT: Still just boots back to recovery. I need to try a few other kernels and see what I can get to boot this...
im trying to port cm10/jelly bean but have had no luck. i got it to boot but it gets to the launcher and reboots im using the kernel from cm9 alpha6 any ideas/input on kernel that would be better to use or what i may be doing wrong ive never ported anything to the epic touch but i assume its not much different than motorola photon any help would be great thanks in advance
You might want to pm agat63 or chris41g as they have been all over kernel development around here lately and would probably be best equipped to give you an answer... or get at mijjahz or bigtoysrock as team noc has been working on a jb port as well

I hope this doesn't read wrong, if it does I apologize. The only option I know of right now is mijjahs as his team is working on jb port right now. But if there kernel isn't compatible with cm10 you have no options. Porting a ROM, especially one of a different OS version requires extensive development because you are taking a ROM from another phone and trying to get it working on our phone. Here is the part that I hope doesn't come across wrong. If you are capable of doing that I would expect that you know exactly what you need to get a working kernel done. Which begs the question, are you actually developing a cm10 port for our phones or are you just trying to install a cm10 build from somewhere else? Again please don't take that wrong. I am just trying to figure out what you are doing because if you are just trying to install one don't. You will likely permanently brick your phone. But if you are actually developing a cm10 build for us great! Start with mijjahs.
