I have been thinking about flashing a rom or something to make my phone get a better battery life but I want people's opinions on what apps to user and potentially what rom I should use. I've never flashed a rom before either but I am rooted using juice defender and set cpu.

Have you tried cpu tuner? It gives you more options for profiles and better cpu governor control.

Haven't tried that yet. I followed someones picture on how to get setcpu setup right.

My current setup is Myn's 2.2 RLS 4 with Kings #11, no CPU tweaks, autokillers, or memory tweaks, with Watchdog and JuiceDefender, and I seem to be getting amazing battery life. I had to try out pretty much every kernel in the book before I setteled with this one though.

how many batteries do you have?
you many have to recalibrate your battery stats.
if you have 2 batteries and an external charger:
charge the OEM battery in the external charger, those usually charge SLOWER than the AC adapter which is better for the battery
when the OEM is fully charged, turn off the phone and insert the OEM battery
boot into recovery and WIPE your battery stats
reboot the phone
depending on your ROM and kernel, you should easily get at least 2 days run time per charge.
After this, don't use a 2nd battery anymore, Android sucks at recalibrating the battery stats every time you swap batteries. Really a shame.

I agree with this.
Really cause I wiped my battery stats. But I'll follow that cause it sound like you know what you are talking about.

Turn off Mobile Data always on, go to Google Talk/settings, and uncheck automatically login, then log out.
Get rid of people/facebook/twitter widgets which constantly download pictures from your thousands of facebook friends/followees, or make those widget do updates at human intervals, like maybe once every 30min-1 hour.
I dontt have any facebook widgets out. I didn't even know my google talk was always signed in like that. mobile always on is off. After doing the battery stats wipe and using the OEM battery I am already at 93%. Maybe I should get a rom? I have juice defender running at 1.5x(maybe it's a problem?) And setcpu also.

I found that having set cpu and juice defender etc. didn't improve my battery life very significantly. Or I should say, significantly enough to justify slowing down the device on purpose to save battery life.
A good kernel (like netarchy's 4.2.1 cfs havs more) will help quite a bit with idle battery consumption, and somewhat with the active usage consumption. A rom would probably not change it much, but try something like Virusrom Airbourne (I had excellent battery life results with that one).
In the end however, you won't be able to get better results than approximately this:
1) ~1% battery drop in 1 hour of idle (screen off, 3g on) time.
2) ~0.5% battery drop in 1 minute of active usage time.
That's the hardware limit - a fully charged battery will afford about 100 hours of standby, or about 200 minutes of active usage time (less with cpu intensive games, which will heat and drain the battery more, of course).
There's one big battery drainer I haven't mentioned outside normal usage.
If your cellular signal is bad, the cellular radio tends to drain the battery in a BIG way.
In my office, I have pretty bad cellular reception. I actually have to force roaming and connect to a different provider if I want to save battery.
(In fact, I think I just dropped 8% in about an hour of basically standby, because the signal is 0-1 bar here).
You made a lot of nice points there. I'm in the basement so depending on the spot I'm in the 3g AND the 2g vary. By my bed is the worst but my wifi isn't cooperating with my phone. Always timing out yet keeping the connection. My battery was better with wifi when it worked cause it's in the same room. I'm thinking of uninstalling setcpu first cause juice defender increases it's percentage when battery sucking app is uninstalled and vice versa. I am thinking about flashing a rom but I hear so many problems with these roms so not sure.

I get about 2-3 days of run time after using this method. I used to have 2 batteries and swap but not anymore. If you want to use more than 1 battery, then make sure that both are the SAME BRAND and the SAME CAPACITY (mah).
Can we petition Android to automatically wipe battery stats every time the battery cover is removed? Or, even after reboot would be good.
Quite a few people in this thread getting 1, 2, 2+ days of run time:

That is your problem, you don't have signal so the phone is constantly searching for one. You will never have good batery life. You need better signal. Get an Airave
What's airave? And my signal only goes out by my bed.i don't sleep much.

I think it will be easier if I get my wifi working than to buy this. I just uninstalled kik and pingchat also juice defender. Went to recovery with a full battery and wiped stats. [email protected]% so far.

LIES!! Battery stats don't get wiped, recalibrated, or other whimsical notions you have when swapping batteries.
I have three extended batteries, swap them out every 2 days and I don't get worse battery life with one battery over the other.
If your battery stats are being "recalibrated" when you swap your battery there is something wrong and it has nothing to do with android.
my battery just about lasts a day with small usage, when i click on whats using the power its 46% cell standby and 47% phone idle, 5% android system and 2% display is there anyway of bringing the cell standby and phone idle percentages down? or is this just the wildfire and battery which is supplied with it? got the phone brand new and been using it for less then 6 months?? thank you for any answers
Here's a little info I found earlier about an app called autostarts and also taskkillers, I've been using autostarts for a while now but just saw this today.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17236867
There's a few other things you can try to save a bit of battery life like calibrating your battery by wiping the stats from cwm when its just about flat then charging till full, never read a guide on this but I presume that's how it works (someone correct me if I'm wrong), there's a free app from the market I use called llama which can be setup to switch off wifi,GPS etc whenever the screen goes off or to use location to switch on wifi in a specific place etc......

My battery has been depleting at a very rapid rate and am wondering if it's normal or something I can do on my end to fix. For example, I made a phone call and left a voicemail and the battery went down about 3%. I was thinking of just buying a replacement battery, but if there is something I can do to try and fix the current one, I'm open to that.
Thanks!

Depending on your reception (and length of call/voicemail), that could be quite normal. There are other factors as well; is this a new phone? Have you recently flashed a new ROM, restored a backup or done a factory reset?

I just checked my phone since I posted the initial thread and it went down another 8%?! It definitely didn't used to be like this. The phone isn't new, it's about 14 months old. And yes I did recently root my phone and flash CM7 on it, but I thought it would have improved the battery life, not make it worse!
Let me know if any other info is needed, thanks!
Using the phone in the same location (like work or home) as you previously used the phone? Reception is often tied to location. I get rapid battery drain when in poor reception areas.
How long ago did you flash the ROM? You should cycle the battery from full charged (100%) to about 20% (but not empty) and repeat this a couple times in order to properly calibrate the battery meter. This needs to be done every time you flash a new ROM, in order for battery readings to be accurate. You can also clear the battery stats before you do this, to make sure any previous data is not screwing up the calibration.

As redpoint stated, you need to cycle a few times after flashing a new ROM.
Let's say your battery was at 60% when you flashed CM, the ROM is basically going to think that 60% is as full as it gets; after a few cycles, the ROM will "learn" your battery.
Additionally, there are so many tweaks one can do with CM that you can actually kill you battery faster if you max everything out (overclock all the way, turn on all the eyecandy, etc.)

Check your parameters, set OC profiles in order to optimize energy consumption, also as said upper calibrate battery meter and then see how your battery holds, i don't think it's a physical defection because hardware is well made but you never know so do this and then we'll see.
download battery monitor widget from market and track the history and usage statistics, that will give you a starting point to trace the issue. as a reference, my DZ running miui and cm7 kernel is using roughly 26-29 mah with screen off

I'd suggest flashing a new kernel for better battery life if all else fails.
Currently I'm running EliteMod's kernel, U flash it just like you would a rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246682
I've been getting some bad battery life but not nearly as bad as you have.
I suggest fiddling with SetCPU or turning off all your usual wireless services like Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS
I bet the problem is that you got sync on! That NAILS AND KILLS BATTERY FAST!
Here you new gameplan.
Step 1: Download battery dr.
Step 2: Shut off all sync (manually sync when you need email updates etc.)
Step 3: buy 2 backup batteries from Ebay for cheap
Step 4: Shut off volume vibrate on keypress, shut off all animations, shut off volume noise on keypress, turn screen of from inactivity to 15 seconds.
That should help. Let me know your results.
I need to figure out exactly what's causing this battery drain. At 7PM my battery was at 100% after installing a new radio+kernel combo. I also calibrated my battery using a method I read in the Calkulin thread for his ROM. The method was as follows: After installing a new radio, rom or kernel charge the battery to 100% then physically take the battery out for 3 minutes. Boot into recovery then wipe the battery stats and dalvik cache 3 times each. Boot into Android then charge to 100%. Download a battery calibration tool use that and discharge. Anyway, I did all of this and was done by 7PM. After light use...listening to a few songs via google music...did a search using 3g...nothing too heavy. By 8:23 my battery was down to 76%. I thought this was pretty abnormal so I downloaded some extra battery tools and app watcher tools to see exactly was draining me so bad. Over the course of about 1:30 hours my battery dropped from 76% to 46%. I froze some non essential apps after checking up on them with watchdog (social hub, yahoo finance, tts service and accuweather). Decided to do a restart to see if that would help and my battery read 17%. I just noticed that it went up to 18% and it's holding steady but this is really weird...I honestly don't know what's going on and I could really use some assistance with this issue.
I forgot to post stats for the past few hours. Before I started the battery drain quest the Battery Monitor Widget said that the estimated was around -280mA. Over the course of a few hours it ranged from that to well over -600mA. After the restart it dropped to like -2mA but now it's back up in between the -400mA to -700mA range. It's slowly dropping as I type but there's no way that this is normal.
Sometimes when doing reboots messes up the battery reading. Its done that to me before. I have noticed that on ics when I flash a kernel and modem it takes me like a full day to get good battery. After I flash it my battery is pretty bad. Search for an appstore called bettery battery stats. Its on here at xda somewhere. Use that to see if your phone is sleeping properly or if an app is wakelocking your phone. Also it depends on who u ask but wiping battery stats does absoutley nothing for me. Its been said before that it doesn't work. Hope u get it straightened out.

thanks for the response. I've downloaded the battery stat app but I need to read up more on it to find out what the program is telling me. In your opinion what is good battery drain? I was on facebook for a second and it skyrocketed to high -600's but now it's down to about -90mA and dropping by just sitting in front of me.

Clearing battery stats does work to wipe any info the os has on the battery. Just check your battery graph in settings, boot to cwm, wipe battery stats, then look at that graph again.
I know you know your fair share of info, so no disrespect man...

I think he meant wiping does nothing to actually effect the life of the battery... Which, I agree. I've never seen any benefits when I've done it on my ET our my Moment.
Wiping just resets the OS's experience with the battery. Using your phone normally for 24 hours had the exact same effect.

things were looking up as far as battery life goes. i got rid of some programs that were hogging the cpu and i was almost to around 12 hours on a single charge with light use. however, i did a reboot at around 6pm and my battery read 45% before hand. after the reboot it read 10%. do you think it has something to do with the kernel? this is the second time a reboot has jacked up my battery.
Guys
I have been having the same problem and try lots of things but what I did not try and just found out is that my phone has a 1500mHa instead off a 1800mHa Sprint store made a mistake and placed the wrong battery inside my phone.
Maybe some of the problems you guys are having is due to that fact.
Besides opening the phone there are several app that will actually tell you which battery you have I.E. Battery Monitor
Hi guys, I bought 2 batteries so I could play longer (info here)
I charged one and replace my original battery. At that moment my original battery was at 70%. I put the new battery and with shock I see that the battery level was 70%, the same level that my original SE battery.
I think battery level got stuck somehow. Is there a way to fix it or is a battery problem?
ADDED: while I was writing this post, my battery went from 70% to 80% without been connected to a USB cable or charger... extrange.
I think it has something to do with the battery stats not being tuned to the new battery. I wish I had more info for you, like how to reset the stats, but I can't recall on how to do it, as I have yet to do so myself lol. I just remember reading about it here at xda....maybe under accessories section.

Ye its not your battery thats screwed anyway just let ur battery drain then charge it to 100% & wipe stats, u can do so by searching for battery calibration app on playstore. It comes with instructions and is simple. It just deletes a file for batterystats inside data/misc I think ( I havent had to do it in a long time ).
