Hi,
This may be a vague question, but it would be interesting to see what people have to say - perhaps with some contributions who have bought any First Gen Win Phone 7.
Given that specifications on paper & hardware mostly the same -
1. Is performance variable between differing handsets
2. What physical features of the handset make it appealing to you? With this regards, whats your ideal Win Mo 7 handset from the current available?
Ta
Hmmm for me I choose the display over storage space. For my omina7 there's only 8gb version. But the display when put aside with the other model convince me to get it.
Also the build quality of it is quite nice.
It was a breath of fresh air when the Omnia was officially announced, mainley because of its original design and super nice screen.
The hd7 on the other hand just seemed like another rush job from HTC, not really doing anything different from the hd2, evo, desirehd...
Though I have yet to play with a WP7 device in person, the Venue Pro is the phone for me. I had my heart set on the Mozart at first, but a couple things changed my mind.
- I'm sick of HTC cutting corners lately. Every blog/post I've seen about the Venue has been very positive about the device's build quality.
- I don't want a 4.3 inch screen. I've always wanted something a bit smaller. 4.1 is perfect, in my opinion.
- A portrait keyboard is good and bad. Good because one hand texting is very easy. Bad because it kind of ruins any emulation/gaming experience that could take advantage of a landscape keyboard.
- Removable storage. WP7 doesn't allow using the phones as a thumb drive. Problem solved on the Venue. Upgradable storage.
- AMOLED. This is strictly my opinion. I much prefer deeper blacks and more vibrant color over bleeding and washed out color. I loved my Nexus One's display.
- Huge factor here.. the stereo speakers! I've been told they sound great and not nearly as tinny as HTC's devices. Also, the volume can be maxed out without the slightest hint of crackling.
- Camera. I dunno if it'll be any good, but I can't stand the low quality crap HTC continues to use. I'm ready for something new.
* The size kind of worries me.
* The chrome trim looks cheap and is a fingerprint magnet.
Ive got an omnia 7 had it for 2 weeks and the only thing im dissapointed about is the 8GB storage. having said that i owned a touch diamond 2 for 18 months and lived 4GB so for me its an upgrade anyway, heres wha i think. in short, ( without having actually seen it in the flesh.
Dell Venue Pro depends if it has more than 8gb or an sd slot but mim now thinking this would be my choice if i wasnt so impatient to gte a wp7 device.
my list of things that make a good wp7 phone.
Super AMOLED screen - why? at first i didnt care about this `feature` until i put my omnia 7 up against a HTC HD7. it makes the HD7 screen look very poor indeed. once youve seen the difference in the flesh theres just no going back
NAND memory - looks like samsung has done a great job with this memory with tests proving that its faster than micro SD and performs better, if you can get a 16gb omnia would an awesome purchase.
4" Screen MINIMUM. one of the first things i wanted was a bigger screen than on my last phone, this will be especially useful when playing xbox live games such as rocket riot. on a smaller screen your thumbs will be covering up a lot of playable space.
Windows Live ID - if you havnt got one get one, WP7 integration is awesome, you can use email, zune and xbox live with this.

How is it solved on the Dell???
One of the main things that made me decide on an HD7 was the screen size as I use Sharepoint pretty much every day and having that extra size is great.
if the venue pro was on at&t I would get it...but since it's not I want the samsung focus...which is just as great a phone IMO
Interesting views. I had a look at some of the phones suggested and did think that the Dell Venue looks quite impressive. Perhaps too thick tbh.
I like my phones slim and light - the most lightest I found so far is SAMSUNG focus - any thoughts on that?!
Samsung Omnia 7 looks the smartest I think - but a bit of Iphone copying going on with the button!
Additionally, I like to have all buttons as hardware. Thats one thing I hated about my HTC HD.
For me the ideal WP7 phone:
* Storage (more than 16GB)
* NAND memory instead of poor SD cards
* battery life (should be more than 1 full day)
* hadware buttons (no sensitive buttons)
* S-AMOLED screen instead of bad S-LCD or LCD screen
* AND THE BEST: a slot for an additionnal SD Card
None of the current WP7 devices has a decent storage, except the LG and the Focus. I know it's a total deal-breaker for most people I know.
Regarding battery I'm becoming very tired of all these manufacturers that still cannot propose a decent battery lasting more than a couple of hours.

Well, for me, I'll be able to just take my SD card out and plug it into my computer. Copy whatever files I need to quickly and then slide it back into the phone.

this actually isn't the case. once a microSD card goes into a windows phone, it becomes unreadable by any other product as it turns it into a form of uniformity with it's current onbuilt memory so that the OS only sees 1 storage unit. Hence why a hard reset is required when you put in a different microSD card.
if you wish to have files accessible, use your PC and Windows Live Mesh (available through Essentials 2011, downloadable through Windows Update), and then just set up directories on your computer to auto sync to skydrive, and then when you need the file on the phone, it will download it off skydrive.

Crap, you're right. I forgot. Keep reading the VP has removable storage, but it would still have to hard reset. Thanks for the reminder.

I could forgo the SD card slot if there was an option for 32 GB with NAND memory.

Isn't Microsoft's solution to all of this SkyDrive? Your thumbdrive is in the cloud and it holds 25gb. You an access the files from your computer or phone. It should work well with the exception of using a school or work computer where the site is blocked.

Wow... that looks like a genuinely decent replacement for the Rhodium. As far as the exterior hardware goes, I would definitely love something like that to replace the Rhodium! The milled aluminum/white ABS plastic body, combined with the rounded sides and sharp edges immediately make me think of one of the new MacBooks. If that existed right now and would get a WM7 upgrade, I would definitely consider purchasing it (as long as it isn't powered by a Qualcomm MSM7xxx)
haha, I should have added some specs shouldnt I?
If I had my way:
Windows Phone 7 Series
GSM & CDMA versions available
1GB RAM
16GB Storage (stupid WP7S wont support memory cards ¬_¬)
Snapdragon 1.5GhZ processor (at least)
4" AMOLED screen
High quality Stereo Speakers
Front 2 mp camera
Back 5 mp camera
(If I was going to do real photography, I would use a camera, not a cameraphone so I dont think anything larger than 5mp is really needed)
GPRS/HSDPA etc
WIFI/Bluetooth (no wimax, because seriously.. whos gonna need it?)
3.5mm Headphone jack
Dedicated camera button on the side (the on-screen one is annoying)
Also as an afterthought I would have removed the notification LEDs
and placed them internally near the top, so the HTC logo glows when you have a text / have wifi on / new message etc
wow, the very bottom two corner picture looks like a DS Lite..it was cool until I saw that
whatever the TP3 may be, I just want it to run WP7S better than any phone in the market when it releases, and available at T-Mobile w/ a price point like the HD2 release
I like your version of the TP3! Looks nice.
Scott
Make it the same size/weight as the Diamond (including slide out keyboard)
battery life the same as a Nokia 1100 (or perhaps a Ford Anglia)
1GB RAM plus built in 16GB storage
"N" internet speeds guaranteed
And a request, a Personal Microwave Generator to heat up the cups of coffee that go cold whilst playing.

awesome design, we should send this to htc and maybe...just maybe....they might throw out whatever prototype tp3 they have and replace it with this one =) love the white body
just 3 points:
1) i take it on one corner will be the stylus housing?
2) perhaps a flash for the camera? i miss the "torch" function...which can actually be offset by lighting up your screen....but it's kinda nifty
3) kudos on the storage capacity spec of 16gb....or maybe we can bump this to 32

lol I like how your 2 points became 3
my response:
1) there wouldnt be a stylus because lets face it Windows Phone 7 doesnt really need one and also it would be a capacitive screen anyway, so it would have to be some kinda funky stylus or a sausage
2) If they included a flash it would have to be a real decent one because ive never seen a cameraphone flash which has been any help
3) lol i dont want to push my luck

no wm7. android or bust. wm7 is so restrictive, you dont want it.
Besides faster processor and more memory - A Track Ball!!!
Yeah that looks awesome!!
Something with the HD2's massive screen and 1GHz processor would be awesome. Plus a good/big hardware keyboard. I also hope there is a decent graphics chip, as that would really enhance performance.
I would be thrilled if there was an Android option too.. but judging by HD2/Supersonic it looks like Android may lag behind in release.
And yeah, trackball (or some sort of joystick/d-pad) is one of those excellent overlooked features (very grateful to have one on my Nexus One).

I didn't know we were allowed to post pr0n in the forums, but whatever!
These renders do a great job of putting a visual form on the same fantasy that many of us here have had...an HD2 with just that extra few mm of thickness, and the mid-waist split that could only mean one thing; a dancepad for the thumbs (aka "hardware keyboard")
Well Cris, when HTC finally wizens up and decides to officially release this monster, we'll remember where the design first saw the light of day!
I am wondering if any manufacturers are going to be different anytime soon? I am hoping that by July we will see a little "fragmentation" i.e. we have tegra 2 phone with 32GB data and a SAMOLED screen.
Or is chassis 1 very, very strict, that we are only going to see specs x.
well MS has set all minimum specs, but I'm guessing that for things like CPU, MS should define what manufacturers can use as they're all too scared to just put any chip in without causing damage to the WP image. Most of the variations at present can really come from the camera, on board memory (and sd slot), and the screen type. Everything else you'll find to be quite similar at this stage, but hopefully MS defines the other 2 chassis type so that more variations can come about.
Meh, its annoying that the closest to what I want is a slider.
I plan on never having a slider again after seeing pretty much every person who owned a slider(including me) have it break. Conditions don't seem to suit sliders much.
16GB, 4" AMOLED screen, SD slot and audio quality coming out of the phone that is just as good the the Zune HD's.
Omnia 7 just misses it by no SD slot, 16GB almost impossible to get in SA, and the audio out seems to have missed all the low bass?!
I use quality headphones + an amp, or I plug my phone into my speaker system or my car. I will notice those frequencies...
Though one thing I do not care for, definately goes to speaker quality, neer really cared about that.
Agree! if just ONE manufacture put their whole effort into 1 of their WP7 phones, it would wipe the floor with the competition and give us all an obvious choice when it comes to selecting a wp7 phone. instead, the choice is difficult and they are technically no better than the 18 month old HD2 if just one of these new phones had for example a front facing camera, 32gb nand memory or more... ive no doubt it would be everyones pick.
I think the Samsung Omnia is the best device, however its a shame that it only comes with 8GB memory and no way to expand it.

It's AMOLED without "Super". AFAIK, only Samsung phones have S-AMOLED display.
The chassis only stated minimums... The OEMS aren't building more expensive devices because they don't have to. When the OS has picked up and is selling more, then you'll see the superphones (The first Android phone was not an Evo)

Sorry my mistake.[Fixed] I was just reading up on the difference and the super looks a fair bit better again.
What would you like to see in the next HTC Phone? Choose? And also post what you would like to see and have.
Good hardware. I.e., a camera sensor that doesn't suck, use of NAND rather than SD card for storage, screens which doesn't look washed out.
HTC has a lot of stepping up to do for me to consider another device from them. I was pretty happy with my HD2, but the HD7 I initially picked up went back to the store real quick. In the end I ended up with the Omnia 7 from Samsung instead.
Hardware
I switched for the first time from HTC, couldn't accept the Surround. Get rid of that rediculous speaker setup and replace it with their great keyboard. At least a 4.3" screen equal to the Super AMOLED of the Samsung Focus, maximum amount of internal memory (32GB would be fine with me), HDMI port.
I would vote for 32GB+ NAND flash for sure, all other things aren't important as far as I'm concerned.
More importantly, I'd like to see more than one next HTC WP7 phone (just as Samsung phones, and phones from other OEMs).
Because at this point of time, sales numbers for the next few quarters will determine the fate of WP7. And without phones you won't get those numbers. None of the OEMs is or will be capable of making just one phone that'll drive the OS forward.
No matter how much MS will talk about "sales aren't important" and "we're in it for the long haul", they are facing lots of pressure from investors, this isn't the time of XBox launch. Unlike many, I don't think that the launch was a failure (getting 2% of smartphone sales is awesome with so few devices and on half the carriers), but MS will need to ramp it up aggressively, and it can't be done by ads alone no matter how much they spend.
That there are no leaks with MWC looming is troubling.
Tegra 2, lots of NAND, 4" SLCD.

Agreed. During the initial launch we knew about pretty much every phone that was going to be released by this point. The only thing I've seen this time around is that Asus phone.
As for what I'd want in the next phone, physical buttons and half-decent build quality.
Microsoft knows that it has a major uphill battle. Most phone sales are due to word of mouth (a friend has one and loves/hates it) over TV ads. Windows Mobile had a bad rap when compared to Android and the iPhoney, due to its lack of upgrades.
Microsoft needs to blow the lid off this, work with providers to make KICK ASS phones that people want for fair prices.
As for HTC phones, anything over a 4.3" display is getting a little too big (don't people keep their phones in their pockets ?)for a phone. This is getting into the tablet area but, if there is NO QWERTY keyboard, the display MUST be at least 4"
Fast, "great quality, good sized display", modern tech (DLNA, FM, A-GPS, NFC...etc), QWERTY keyboard with a small form factor. If HTC has it, great, if someone else, maybe then it's for me.
I was loyal to HTC for a while but, I have had some crappy phones, so I am open to try others to see how good they are.

The great thing about WP7 is that it doesn't really matter (shhh, don't tell OEMs). It makes a huge difference. My Mozart is the first HTC phone I've had that doesn't need a new ROM. It's marvellous what no OEM software does to a phone.

To the OP:
You should change the QuadBand World Phone to Pentaband 3G. That's what should become the new standard for high end phones at this point.
I want dual core processor, 1gb RAM, better camera sensor/software and a hardware keyboard in a device with a 4" SLCD. Maybe one with LTE support
Problem HTC?
1. higher class of hardware (screen, speaker...)
2. a real IO port for using external addons (TV-out, IR remote control, bio sensors...)
Let's see, we have:
1) Samsung Focus S announced by AT&T
2) Samsung Focus Flash announced by AT&T
3) Samsung Omnia 7 S (made up name) leaked by the FCC
All these seem to sport Super AMOLED screens which is great. We do need information on availability and storage options but the Focus S sounds very promising. Today I'm much more likely to buy a Samsung Mango phone over a HTC.

Focus or go home, pretty much. It's the best device confirmed to be coming out now.
4.3" SA+ screen @ WVGA is a lot more bearable than 4.7" SLCD @ WVGA. 1.4 GHz almost as good as 1.5. It has a 32 GB Option IIRC. Samsung tends to use NAND in their phones, so I'm hoping for that. Decent cameras, and the sound and cell radio are almost guaranteed to be better than HTC devices.
Too bad AT&T axed Unlimited Data. That's a showstopper for me, and I'm guessing lots of other people.

Super excited for the Focus S, assuming at least 24 GB will be available. Now, let's see what else will be coming out around that time...
@N8ter where did you get that 32GB info? Storage hasn't been mentioned. I hope it's a Worldwide phone unlike the first Focus.

It's heresay. I have seen it mentioned by a few people at different sites. Sorry. That's why I put the "IIRC" part It's questionable.
If it has no 32GB option it'll be dead to me.
I'll buy a new iPod instead. Really, this is getting ridiculous.
I wonder if the new iPhone will have a 4" screen...
I spent about 2 grand on phones in 2010-2011. I'll be frugal for the next few years, so whatever phone I get in the next 1-3 months well... I'll just take a contract out cause I won't be giving anything else a try.
They better knock this **** out of the ballpark. Really, they're running out of chances and it's not like the issue of low storage in the devices wasn't a hot topic following the release of the 1st gen WP7 devices...
Though it voids the warranty WP7 are not hard to upgrade the memory. i'm being alittle hypocritical pointing this out, consdiering I bought a 32gb DVP when I could saved $100 getting a cheaper one with lower storage and upgrading. Prior to the DVP comingto AT&T I also got an HTC surround over the LG b/c of storage, though I prefer physical keyboards.
It depends on what WP7 device you have. It's not easy to upgrade the storage on an HD7. There is no user-accessible SD Card Slot. You literally have to open some of these phones up to get at those slots. Lots of devices have tape inside that clearly indicates if teh phone has been opened up. Some of them have stuff in the screws that makes it obvious if you even stuck a screwdriver in them, nevermind opened it up, and they'll void your warranty if that's been tampered with (they won't even touch it, they'll just say you're on your own - I know people this has happened to).
That's like saying it's not hard to remove the battery from an iPhone, in many cases.
$100 to go from 15 to 32G when you can be absolutely assured that it will work correctly is worth it. Many of us would have paid that, but we didn't get the choice - at all.
The DVP didn't have a 32G option until many months after it was released. For the first 6 months or so all Dell Had were 8 and 16 GB options.
Plus that device only has 256MB RAM, IIRC, which is a showstopper for me. Not to mention the camera on it is beyond terrible.
No. The DVP has 512 but the early tmo ones had a bug where the system only read half of the memory.
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
This time around I'm a little undecided. I'm leaning towards the Focus S, but I would consider the Titan too. I would like to have a physical keyboard as well, but it seems all of the Mango devices aren't available with that option. I guess I might hold out for a little while, but I would like to upgrade before the end of the year.

Supposedly it has lower specs so that it is priced competitively, makes total sense to me since they're already releasing the Focus S with SAMOLED+ and a 4.3" screen.
Jesus, these announcements are going to turn me into a WP7 hater soon.
Just what's wrong with these OEMs? Why in the world do they equate high end with oversized screens?
I'm don't want to go any bigger than 4", but 8GB of storage and PenTile? Screw it.

There's a pretty easy to follow guide to change the HD7's SD Card without voiding warranty. Don't have to take out the screw with the void warranty sticker on it & can move the tape out of the way pretty easily. That being said, never done it, because of the compatibility issues with SD Cards & WP7.
Well, I went to the AT&T store today with every intention of picking up a Samsung Focus S. However, when I went to the store, I actually liked the Flash better than the S. I truly thought the smaller size would be a turn off, but I actually had the opposite reaction. So, I bought one.
I have to say, the only real bummer for me is the 8GB of memory. Realistically though, it's not an issue anymore. I have had a Zune pass since the original Focus was released and there is plenty of space to sync the 3-4 playlists I listen to regularly. There was a point in time where I thought I had to have all 40GB of my music available, just in case. That just isn't the reality for me any longer. I have all the music I need synced and I still have over 4GB of space left. This should be plenty of space for the foreseeable future.
The camera is more than good enough for my use and the screen is outstanding as well. I have never been a fan of these huge screens that are being used on new devices. I feel like I have been forced to buy them in order to get the other high-end features. They may be great for media but they make the devices rather cumbersome overall. I compared the size to my iPhone 4 (work phone) and they are essentially the same. The Flash has a bigger display yet the overall size is nearly identical.
For the price point the Flash sits at, it is an amazing deal by any standard.

I am glad you found a device that suits your needs! The Focus Flash is def good value for the price. I too have Zunepass and only sync my playlists so storage isn't that high up my list.
Nice I've pre-ordered the European version (Omnia W) since it was pretty much dirt cheap with my existing contract. It basically has the same hardware as the Focus S and space shouldn't be that bothersome now that they've released the Spotify app.

Hehe...that's how I feel about the Flash. I love the look of it. If it weren't for the limited storage, I'd be getting one myself. I may still do it anyway. But by the time I'm eligible for my upgrade, the 3rd gen. hardware will be out. Will be interesting seeing what that brings.
Yeah, I will be eligible around May of next year. Hopefully we we see some great devices in round three.

I just saw that iTunes Match went live and for an annual fee. I think the more and more I see these cloud-based programs charging fees for things we all have been using for free with internal storage, the more willing I am to separate my music from my smartphone by using an MP3 player exclusively for music listening instead of letting it be combined with my phone. And as long as smartphone memory capacity continues to drop like it is on WP7, that will be my solution instead of chaining myself to a fee-based system from the cloud.
Knocking media storage capacity out and just using the internal storage of the latest WP7 phones for apps, games and data like SMS, emails, notes and all of the other information data will allow me to settle for an 8GB to 16GB phone.
It's a shame to have to separate anything from a smartphone, which is meant to be a convergence device, but I won't cater to a fee-based system, no matter how hard MS or Apple tries to funnel people to it with ever smaller internal memory. If MS is determined to reduce the internal memory of future phones to the point that even data such as pictures and apps are in danger, I will just go to an alternate source for tech and help let this debacle backfire on them.
