When I connect my phone to Zune it shows how much space each type of files take.
So my music is 7.81GB, pictures 126MB, Videos 130 MB, 2.03GB free space and I have 4GB reserved space.
What is that reserved space?
Also it still does no add up as all that goes to 14GB so whare is my ast 2GB?
There's an option in the Zune client to keep a certain amount of your memory free. That'll be what the 4GB is. The idea is that by keeping a certain amount free you have some to use while your away from your computer (downloading/updating apps OTA etc).
Lowering it to 1GB would probably be sensible. It's worth keeping some memory, but 4GB is excessive.
If you only have an 8GB phone then 4GB is way to much.
Lower it to 1gb - 2gb as then you have more space for other things.

Ok found it and found something interesting. Default is 5%. I have made a factory reset and installed all the same apps as I had before. What I did not do is install a lotof apps and then uninstall them. Reserved space is now 2.5GB. I think some apps do not clean their files after uninstall....

16GB and still to much. I think I will try and upgrade my HD7 to fast 32GB soon.
is there a way of lowering without factory reset?

Open the zune software-->Phone->view sync options-->Reserved space-->move slider
That doesn't do anything. On my phone, the reserved space shows at over 3 GB (on my 8 GB Focus). But in the reserved space setting, I have it lowered to 1%. Last time I checked, 1% of 8 GB was NOT 3 GB.
That "Reserved Space" is also any space used up by apps. I wouldn't be surprised if other stuff (i.e. map cache, emails, ie history) were using the space as well.

16gb is equal to about 14.8gb on any memory card, its the whole bits vs bytes thing.

They do, you're right.
That's why you need a decent amount of reserved space.
I still laugh that people have 16GB phones and want to fill it up with 10GB music.
8GB of which they will probably hardly listen to.
OK, I just read a couple of explanations from MS reps about the topic, and now it all makes sense. The "reserved space" setting and the corresponding display in Zune are only loosely coupled.
The setting indicates how much memory, over and above the amount already used by your installed apps and the OS, to keep "hidden" from Zune, so that people who choose to automatically sync their music collection to their phone won't be left without any room for anything else.
The display shows how much memory you are currently using, PLUS the reserved percentage.
So, for people who don't automatically sync music/videos to their phones, the setting is (mostly) meaningless.
There is still one curiosity, though. Even with the setting at 0%, the free space reported by Zune is almost a gigabyte lower than the available storage reported in settings->about on my phone. Not sure why that is.
I dont really get this.
Most content on my phone should be music, allthough I have not filled it, I have 32 albums on it, not much.
Now it says I have 2,5gb Music, 175mb videos, 25mb pictures, and 3,5GB!!! Reserved space from other computers blabla, what?!
There is no way I have apps and stuff that is 3,5 GB, I cant even buy apps in the Marketplace.
I read that demystifying article on Zune homepage and im just tired and dont understand anything of it, if you have to write a ****ing book of how users use the space on the phone then something is wrong.
What is taking up the space on my phone? How do I check that?
There is an issue there. I can confirm that if I install Assasigns creed, earthworm jim, monopoly, rise of glory and the harvest directly after hard reset it takes away about 2.3GB of space. Then if I uninstall them I do not get 2.3GB back I get about 1GB.
Couple that with fact that after hard reset some apps automatically reinstall even if I did uninstall them before and you end up with plenty of wasted space.
In regards of plenty music. All my albums are 320kbits, 48khz, 24but so one music album is about 300 to 400mb. Sorry but 10GB is maybe 25 albums.
I dont have that bitrate on my albums. I have checked and 95% is between 80-120mb in size. Thats about 2,5 - 3,5 gb music on my phone. Its a mess really and I hate not knowing what the hell is taking up all the space.
Hi Folks
I had the same issues. To solve this problem,go to zune settings on the computer. There are settings for automatic syncronisation of data like Video,Music,Pictures and podcasts.I had first, all settings turned on.Than i saw that i dont have much space on Handy, because it says space reserved for computer usage bla bla.
Now the fix:
turn off auto sync of data like videos or music. After this you have more space on the phone.
In my case:I have 1,7 gigs music and 2 gigs of vids on the Handy. With the settings standing on autosync,Zune reserves 1,7+2 Gigs on the Handy that you cant use.So i turned this of and i can now use full space of my handy.
Try it out,it works.
Greets Quentin
Where is that option?
I have allready set my Sync Opyions to "Manual".
If I look on "Sync Groups" It says...
Music=296 Songs (2555mb)
Videos=7 Videos (175mb)
Pictures=214 Pics (25mb)
Podcasts=0
Thats barely 3gb, and my phone is FULL?!
HELP.
I have manual sync in Zune, Reserved space set to 0 (zero) 800 MB of Music, 20 MB od Pictures and 8GB phone is full! The rest is reserved space which is set to zero and I dont have any games at all. So..WTF?

do you install all your programs on your phone or your storage card. most programs will work fine if they are installed on the storage card.

I would first delete all old text, mms, emails, call list, missed call list , then go into the deleted item folders for each one of those and delete those also, because when you delete messages( sms, mms, email ) they move to the deleted items folders. check my documents for old files /stuff you don't need anymore, move any pics , music , from device to storage card. Second you can use sktools to autoclean the phone's cache's and cookies, it removes bad shortcuts and temp folders. Now I'm not saying you'll get mayor space, but those things help quite a bit.
Also reinstall programs to SD card the only things you want on device mem is startup programs "so programs that launch on bootup" & i'd do the same with media player to take load off storage card.

Cool, thanks for the replies. I'd say just about the only media players installed on the device are what came with the ROM. I cleared out all of the old MMS messages and texts. I don't really do email on the phone because I don't have internet on my plan. I do need to check that though. I've used my wifi to get email before I'm sure...yay sktools lol
Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before.
I reently removed a number of old apps etc from my device to free up some space etc.
I've now noticed that the storage memory numbers have gone through the roof, sitting at 214.84mb used, 58.78 free. It was much lower before.
Does this thing have a recycle bin like Windows that needs emptying? And if so, how?
Thanks guys
Mike.
Nope, there is no Recycle Bin or Trash Can in WM. Did you use the "Remove Programs" option in Settings>System to remove the apps?
Have you soft reset after removing the apps?
trash
Hi
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I did use the remove programs function to remove them. It seems to have grown after doing that.
I don't have that many programs on the device, but don't understand why the storage space is so small. I keep all my music/videos/pictures etc on the storage card.
Is it possible to check for email attachements etc?
Thanks
Mike
I would do a soft reset first, it's likely that WinMo isn't calculating your free storage space correctly. If that doesn't work, you can also search for large files and possibly find the reason why there is so much memory being used.
There is a program called "Search" in WinMo. Change the "Type" to "Larger than 64 KB" and leave the "Search for:" field blank. This will pull up every single file on your phone (and storage card) that is larger than 64KB in size.
You could also try some cleaning tools like SKTools or MemMaid to find the pesky files. Don't forget to clear up your Internet browsing history too.
Hope this helps!
You can try Treesize mobile, this will let you see all files and the amount of memory they take up.
Another program is memmaid to clean up after uninstallations.
Thanks guys. I didn't even think about ie history! That cleared up loads.
I had a look at the file search but it did't find anything remarkable, except maybe that when you set an mp3 as a ringtone it moves it to the main memory aswell, rather than just using the copy on the storage card.
Lots of GPS trackings also got cleaned out!
I'll track down this memmaid program and give it a whirl. I was also a bit harsher on clearing old programs out and that's helped too. And email attachements.
Up to 111mb storage free and 88mb program free. I can feel the weight difference already!
Thanks again!

Hi everyone!
Even though the holidays have passed, we're really stoked to give you guys one more present -- a new experimental release! Under the wrapping you'll find a bunch of new toys, including a brand new Camera Upload feature. Here are the release notes:
• Automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
• 500MB of free space on first photo uploaded automatically
• Upload files of any size (no more 180 MB limit!)
• Support for resuming file uploads when there are network issues
• Various performance improvements & bug fixes
During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 5GB total (including the initial 500MB space).
[Update: this space is not separate from 5GB given for uploading on our desktop clients. Uploading from either desktop clients or Android app will count towards the same 5GB free space.]
Grab the APK directly from here:

This is for PCs and MACs: (original thread)
Another day another build. We're trying to snipe all the most common bugs. Keep plugging in those cameras!
During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total. [Update: To clarify, you can get up to 5GB of free space with this feature, if you count the initial 500MB space for the first photo import].

Other small fixes
1.3 Features

Windows: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox 1.3.12.exe
Mac OS X: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox 1.3.12.dmg

Linux x86: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/dropbox-lnx.x86-1.3.12.tar.gz
Notes:
Clients 1.3.5 and earlier had an auto-update bug. Please install this version so that your client will stay up to date!
The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux.
For Android devices, it's best to use "Connect as Disk Drive". HTC Sync will not work.
To import from iPhone, make sure to unlock your phone and enter your passcode before importing, otherwise it will claim to find no photos.
If importing from your iPhone on Mac gives an import error, try hard resetting it--hold down the power and the home button for 5 seconds. This will reboot the phone; it shouldn't change your settings or delete data.
On Windows, this feature relies on Autoplay. Please enable Autoplay to use this feature if you have disabled it.
On XP and Vista, it relies on the Windows Image Acquisition Service. If this service is not started, please start the service and reinstall Dropbox to use this feature. On WIndows Server, you may have to install the Desktop Experience feature.
On Windows 7, newer devices that rely on Device Stage (in the Control Panel) will not show Dropbox as an import option until you select "Change Program" for the default.
The Galaxy Nexus takes a lot of time to connect on OS X because it likes to pretend that every image on the device is a photograph. We now estimate how long it's going to take and show you that in the progress bar but it's usually in the order of minutes. We're working to see if this can be improved.
As usual, we strongly recommend making a backup of your Dropbox before upgrading to this build as we'll need a few weeks to be certain of its stability. We will rapidly release new builds as necessary to snipe the most common issues as they arise.
"For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus"
Do you have to leave them forever, or in time can you delete them and still retain the free 500mb?
I used the DT app and uploaded 600mb of photos... no additional "500 mb" yet rewarded and normally they are instant on that like they were when I sync'd my first photos from my Prime. So, not sure what the angle is?

You have to use the camera upload option to automatically sync pics and videos.
You can delete them afterwards. I just made several 10 minute videos and the uploaded and i get my 5GB.

I got a total of 5GB total, you get 500MB for the first upload and 4,5GB for every 500MB of photo+video you upload.

Read post #1... you should be able to upload via desk or phone and earn the extras
So far, only vids and photos uploaded from my phone or tablet are earning the 500mb extras, desktop is not getting it done as claimed
UPDATE: I just did the Google Adwords method last night until this morning. I have been meaning to do it since I read about it month ago, but this whole thing prompted me to go for it. In 12 hours I spent $10 and got over 30 signups and maxed out my allotted free "referral" space - I only needed 27. So on a Free account, I now have just over 15gb of storage.

1. Install the beta client from the link above onto your desktop (I did not uninstall previous version, they recommend backing up your Dropbox folder)
2. Connect some kind of portable storage with pictures on it
3. In the auto run menu select dropbox picture import (or whatever its called)
It will create a folder called "Camera Uploads" inside of the Dropbox folder.
You will get 500mb instantly, and another 500mb for every 500mb of pictures you have up to 3gb. So Im not sure if you need 2.5gb of pictures, or 3.
May take a while....
You wont get all the space right away, but in 500mb chunks as the pics upload.
The source device of the pictures doesn't need to stay plugged in the whole time, as long as the import dialog completed, you can remove the device.
All i had on hand was an external HDD, and Dropbox didn't find pictures on it right away, so I made a folder called DCIM and put the pictures in there. Unplug, replug, good to go.
A workaround for actually uploading that many pictures and movies is listed in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520930
Read the quoted instructions under "Dropbox beta testing =3GB". I'm at 26.88GB of storage between the initial 2GB, the 3GB from the Sense apk, an edu e-mail address with maxed referrals at 16GB, the 2GB code that I posted earlier ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545972 ), 3GB from the camera upload trick, and 256MB from getting started ( https://www.dropbox.com/gs ) and 640MB from spamming about dropbox ( https://www.dropbox.com/free ).
Some good news from http://blog.dropbox.com:
If you’ve got a free account, you can invite up to 32 people for a whopping total of 16 GB of extra space.
Pro accounts now earn 1 GB per referral, for a total of 32 GB of extra space.
Have you already invited a bunch of people?
Don’t worry. Within a few days, you’ll get full credit for every referral that’s already been completed. Boom!
Keep in mind that accounts with edu email addresses linked, remain capped at 500mb/referral. Wish this went up like the regular accounts.
Does anyone know what is the usable internal storage of International Samsung Note 8? I have read from Internet (can't remember where) that it is impossible to move videos, music and document onto microSD. Is this true for non-root Note 8 device?

I dont see how that can be true? We had someone on here who had heard the same thing from some forum. The only thing that cant be stored on the microSD on a non rooted device is apps and apps data. All other documents and files can be stored where you like. If that wasnt the case, there would be no point included a microSD slot with the device.
Whether or not files purchased through Android applications can be transferred or not is dependant on the individual app. If an app will only allow music (for examples) to be played from a specific folder or not I can not say as I purchase my music on my laptop and transfer it to my microSD as and when I need to.
My girlfriend bought an album with play music. The file names are generic. ie song 207 making it difficult to identify what track is what song when looking at it in a file explorer. As such we are just going to avoid the play store for music in future as neither of us use it as a media player.

I'm also wondering, because setting schows me internal memory with 9,78 GB not something like 16 GB ?
Regards Taifun
well, after putting about 160 programs on this thing, I still have over 5 gigs of space available on my internal card; with the low price of external sd cards now, (I think I paid less than 20 dollars for 32 gig card) there is no reason to not get one, and store all your media, documents, etc on the external card, insted of filling up your internal storage.
You never have 16 gigs "available" on your internal card, since the system files take up alot of space, plus cache, and data from files still use that space. Supposedly, Samsung is releasing some firmware that will allow you to put your apps on the external SD once again, but that was always problematic on their devices, so it still remains to be seen if that will work properly once they do...
Here again, no need to make a big deal about space, just get an external SD card, and put everything else on it..
