This subject didn't come up in a MTS forum, so I hope I'm not screwing up by posting here about it.
I got barnacle to work on my MTS (who knew, skip the wpa_supplicant)...however I am recieving far under what I should be getting for 3g. Something like 115kbps total data transferred in 10 minutes of having it on. No page loaded at all and it dropped connection once.
Is it just finnicky software, difficulty compatibility? I know 3g is faster than that.
I'm running CM 6.1, rooted (obviously). If anyone can help (or suggest a more stable, more compatible program that will give me the proper speed...either way), I'd much appreciate it! Thanks!
I am having the exact same experience.
With the standard wi-fi tether app not working on the cyanogen roms I had to try barnacle. I used to get around 1.5mb/s down with wi-fi tether. With barnacle it works for about 30 seconds with a down speed of about 5 kb/s then cuts out and starts fluctuating between getting about .2 kb/s and 0 kb/s....essentially nothing at all.
I really wish I had some code knowledge so I could figure out why wi-fi tether worked perfectly on eugene's slidemeroot builds but won't work at all on cyanogen.

I'm taking a complete shot in the dark, as every day I pretty much double my overall knowledge of Android (I rooted my device about a week ago), but I'm willing to bet that Cyanogen's 6.1 is froyo and eugene's slidemeroot is eclair and maybe that's why Barnacle isn't working for us. I could be wrong though.
Before I rooted I used a tether app that worked fine the first time I used it. After that, it never connected again. So, based on my experience, I'm going to just throw it out there that maybe all wifi-tether apps are a little buggy, as they either don't work, only work for a short time or work in a limited capacity.

I've tried the stock rooted Froyo 2.2, Ava Froyo 2.2, and OMJ Froyo and the all work great (thanks everyone) but seems like Android WiFi Tether doesn't work on any of them. Is anyone experiencing this?
Actually WiFi Tether works but my laptop can't catch the signals whereas it does on OMJ 2.1fine.
same here
I unfortunately have to agree with you...wireless tethering just does not work yet with this new kernel. I have tried all the same HTC froyo roms as well... I can broadcast and my WiFi device can see it and try to connect but cannot get an ip address ..always 169... I hope this gets fixed soon
I don't use tethering that much anymore (now that I'm not in high school) but once I start college next month I'll need it more than ever, so idk if I should flash 2.2 yet. From everything I've read nobody's gotten it to work on any froyo roms yet.
first, q and a, not development, is where this should have been posted.
second, i'm on cm6 nightly 7/29, with the new radio and wimax flashed over it. i had no problem at all using the froyo hotspot (obviously not sprint's, bc no sprint packaged material is on the cm6 aosp release). it's not 4g, but it works. i tethered my ps3 with no issues at all.
im in same boat... once i head back to college i'm going to want to take advantage of the unlimited 4G... and without wifi tether thats going to suck.. hopefully someone can figure this out -
maybe someone will make a kernel with it enabled based on whatever in 2.1 that allows it ...?
does PDANET work? anyone who upgraded?
this is in wrong section but I used version 2_0_5-pre4 and it works fine. right now on Stock Froyo rooted but switching to Fresh 3.0 beta 2 in a few min
cyanogenmod's rom has working tethering. doesn't have 4g or sense, but wifi tether works, as does everything else.
werid
weird, still not working for me, I am going back to 2.1 OMJ for now, I need my free 4G WIFI TETHER DEVS!
I don't really care about tethering, but can you get any of the fps "fixed" kernels to work on any of the 2.2 roms?

Does the wireless tethering capability that comes stock with Froyo not work for you? Works fine for me in CM6.
Need some time?
The leak has only been released less than 2 days therefore obviously still have a lot of issue with old APP. just give the Developers sometime and I am certain they will come up with something. Beside the leaked 2.2 floating around is not really a final copy anyway so what's the point of working so hard on something that will be replace in a few days. Think all the Developers should just give themselves a beer, sit back relax to calm down their nerves so that their brains will be working at 100% when the final release come out.
Oh,

Didn't try that but does that work with 4G too? (if you didn't sign up for 4G?)

Can you give specifics of your setup? I tried the Evo-Froyo-2.2-Rooted-Stock-3.26.651.3-Deodexed ROM (with latest radio + wimax) but could not get version 2_0_5-pre4 to work. It starts wifi tethering BUT my laptop cannot find /discover it.
Thanks.

Me too.. yes sir.. it no work
he is probably on cm6. you cant really compare the two roms since sprint has its hand in locking up a native feature of the device for profit. we probably need the kernel tweaked by one of the devs in order to get this working.
Yeah, my laptop cannot see it either.

Everyone with an Evo on Sprint is "signed up" for 4G. It may not be available where you are at, but you are paying for it and "signed up" for it.
i ended up purchasing pdanet for tethering. was only 18.95. to be honest this phone is great, but we all know the battery's shortcomings. im ok with killing 2 birds with one stone by tethering usb and charging the phone at the same time . Any solution is cheaper than sprint's recurring tethering charge.
Does pdanet allow tethering over 4g in a 2.2 rom? If so, what speeds are you getting?
for those of you looking for a stable wifi tethering app for your newely rooted mytouch slide, and espically if you are on CM6.1 RC2... this works perfectly, ive been useing it for several days without issue...
just thought id share the tidbit to ya all
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
I've been using the same since RC2 (I am now on the latest nightly, but still working).
just so everyone knows, i posted this cuz after a few hours of looking and total fustration, the forms here didnt lead me to a good tether app, so i did some leg work of my own, figured id save everyone time, no credit owed to me.... just being a good CM'er
i know this wasn't the case in the past..
but is there a way to run wifi in infastructure mode? or at least fake it so i can connect to kindle3?
running CM6.1 RC2
thanks.
mangle
try barnacle for the kindle but the one he just posted is a good working one.
these wifi apps create basically an ad-hoc connection, i know theres a way to connect to a pc and then create a hotspot useing the wife then basically bridge the connections, i had to go through it when i had an ipod touch..... its a silly long process but idk if thatd help
I use wireless tether 2.0.5-pre15 with no problems on the latest cm6 nightly, but it's an ad-hoc connection. Need an infrastructure connection for the Nook Color, as well.
I've tried many ROMS and CM7 is my favorite so far. However, the functionality for Wireless Tether is random...sometimes it works, and other times I get a limited connectivity / cannot obtain an IP error.
I can flash back to other ROMS like Virtuous, Skyraider's 3.5 and Athena 1.2, even CM6.1 and have no problem with Wireless Tether connecting right away.
Anyone else have this problem?
I'm on build 35, Slayher's stock kernel.
Mine takes a good 3 minutes for it to fully connect, but once it connects it works fine. maybe you're not waiting long enough?
I've used the other program you talk about once, i think that one connects right away..

I have found that opening the program, closing and re-opening works every time. A hassle but Gingerbread is worth it.
Ahhh....thanks for the help!
Changing from channel 1 to channel 6 works too!
This may or may not belong in the Questions thread, but I just wanted to share my personal observations and wanted to see if anyone else have the same issues recently.
Let me preface by saying I'm currently on MIUI 2.5.25, and previously have been on AOKP or CM9. Starting late last week, I noticed my Wimax speeds plummeted greatly (from about 6-9mb/s avg down to less than 1mb/s). I flashed back to the other aosp roms I've been running and the slow speeds still persisted.
Out of curiosity (and thanks to the CM9 team's magical temporary stock GB rom), I did the temporary boot to stock EL29. Magically, my Wimax now wasn't just back to normal, but speeds seemed a little better than before, now avg about 8-11mb/s! So I tried flashing to a full rom (I chose Caulk's EL29 rom), and yup, speeds were still super fast. HOWEVER, when I tried to tether with Sprint's hacked hotspot app, it seemed like my speeds were capped at about 1.4 mb/s or slower...no matter how fast I was pulling on the phone itself (usb tethering via pdanet yields full speeds).
Well I figured it must be a lack of source code thing and I miss AOSP roms so much that I figured I'd learned to deal with the slower 4G speeds...BUT ... starting just tonight, I noticed my 4G suddenly turned off by itself. I figured eh, problems with connections, so I turned it back on and let it connect to sprint, which it did. Issue was, I couldn't get online and none of my apps could connect to data. Internet worked fine all day but now it was just dead...Tried temporary EL29 rom again, and Wimax is still faster than ever...
With that said...anyone else seem to have these issue? Has Sprint figured out some type of way to throttle/block non-stock 4G data?

The reason you are not getting the same speeds is because on a sense rom with the hacked sprint hotspot, it only works with 3g. So when you turn on the hacked sprint hotspot, the phone turns off 4g and turns on 3g. On cm7, the hacked hotspot works with 4g and 3g. To get wimax tether on a sense rom, you could try http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Hello! So I have some questions. All help is greeeeatly appreciated.
I installed CM10. Wifi Tether wouldn't work. Log would say Fail when trying to set adhoc. Barnacle wouldn't even detect that I was rooted. Super User wouldn't pop up for it. The native tethering would turn on but devices couldn't connect. The one time my laptop did connect it was with limited connectivity.
So I decided to go back to FC09 2.3.6. Wifi tether... works. But it's crazy slow. Ping stays around 150-175 which is ok, but the speeds. I'm updating Guild Wars 2 and I see the speed hover around 1KB/s to 5KB/s and then it'll jump up to 30KB/s and back down. And then it'll peak around 80KB/s and drop back down. Is this supposed to happen?
I came from an EVO 3D and it's speed was very consistent so I've gotten used to that, but I broke it. Plus the Epic 4g has much better development, even now. And the speeds seem consistent on the Epic 4g itself as well, just not when tethering.
Also... if there's any ideas on how to get it functioning properly on CM10 I'd realllllllly love that. Thank you!!!
