So I am a VERY inexperienced user with making roms. So I plan on using evo kitchen to cook up a rom for myself and others who wish to test it. I would like to know what the most preferred rom base is.

That will be a personal choice. If you ask me, it's Fresh, but that's really the only one I've used consistently. Somebody else will say DamageControl, or Baked Snack, or even the stock 2.2 ROM.
This is a hit or miss and it goes by the user, I have used them all!!! I prefer cm6 right now because with a few teaks it runs so smooth...but right now I'm running Baked Snack and its been flawless all day long!!!All the ROM's out are pretty stable right now so its all up to the user!!!
On that note, what's the attraction to cooking your own ROM? Is it so hard to just find the one that's close to your needs and add/remove the apps you like manually? Or is there more to it?
My main three are...
-- CM6
-- DC 3.5
-- Fresh 3.1.0.1

Nothing like that. I'm some what bored and this is my first android phone so I wanna put stuff together and eventually learn to make a rom without using a kitchen.

I've had a great time with DamageControl 3.5 ever since it's been released. CM6 has been fantastic as well. Decisions, decisions.....

Well that's valid. I climb mountains because they're there.
I've run every rom available since launch day (save the last three CM nightlies)and i'd say there are some seriously talented devs on EVO.
That said, Baked Snack is hands down the best 2.1 rom available. Bar none the best battery life of any rom out, stable and fast.
As far as Froyo, I was switching between roms daily, but once I flashed Calkulin's EViO 1.0.2 rom I was done messing around. By far my favorite of the 20 or so I have tried. Someone is going to have to come up with something pretty spectacular to get me to switch Cyanogen is a good bet once he quits screwing around with all this pre-alpha stuff LOL.

I have been using and loving my cm6 build, but now that 4g has been turned on in Columbus Ohio I am really wanting some 4g action until cm6 comes out with 4g. I would flash back to stock but I can't stand sense ui. I looked at the Roms wiki and was overwhelmed with the number of newcomers to the rom game. So is there another nonsense rom that is 4g capable and otherwise worthwhile? Thanks in advance.

As of now, there is no AOSP ROM with the ability to utilize Wimax.
Try flashing barnacles ROM, you pretty much won't even be able to tell you're running Sense. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824637
I've tried Fresh...

Damage Control...

and EvoNonSense...

Evo-NonSense is my keeper 9though it was just updated yesterday & I haven't flashed it yet.

I've been back and forth between Myns and Virus airborne series, currently on Myns and loving it.

+1 Yeah I really like Barnacles rom Frost. Its my rom I'm using now I really like CM the best but I'm in the same boat no 4G. I use my sling box on my phone which needs 4G. Please get 4g working on CM.
Hi everyone, I'm just trying to find a good rom that has 4g and fully operational. Love the warm 2.2 but don't know whats better to try.speed is key with battery perks.thanks for the help

I'm new to the whole rooting scene but from my understanding all sense based roms have functional 4g. I think cm7 now has 4g also. I've tried mikfroyo and am currently using koni's elite series II beta and both had functional 4g. Hope this helps and if I'm wrong on any of this some one please correct me.

Your running the best one if you like sense. CM7 4x is good if you want to run senseless
All sense roms will have working 4g. Cm7 is not fully functional but the 4g works OK. all other AOSP roms(not very common) wont have 4g for a while.
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
if you stick with the sense popular roms, mikfroyo, warm, etc, you are good to go. Ultimately it depends on what tweaks you like.
Try calkulin with battery saver mod
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yep. All Sense based ROMs will work with 4G enabled. CM7 natively doesn't have 4G but there is a version of CM7 called gginggerbread-6 in the development section that has working 4G.
As for battery life, it depends on your phone. You will have to test that yourself. Make sure you calibrate your battery properly and test it for a week. It is based on the ROM, kernel and overclock/underclock settings, and your usage. So its pretty daunting. My suggestion is once you find a good working kernel and ROM, stick with it for battery life.
If you aren't sure which ROMs to try, check out the poll in my signature for the most popular.
Thank you all so much for the help

easy way is Evo sense based check
AOSP based - CM (more to follow)
Ports - TBD haha
Random question: How often do you flash between ROMs? On a daily basis?
Sent from my Evo using XDA App
I am testing the cyanogenmod 7 nightlies right now and i wait about every 3-4 builds (3-4 days). And sometimes back to unrevoked for a gps fix or update prl/profile.
At first, it seemed like every 2 or 3 days, but lately, I've been more content with finding a daily. I had Koni III for a month or so, then Giger for a week and now Mik's, which I bet I keep for a long time.
For a while, I would flash almost every new rom that came out...but then it got to a point where 4 out of 5 roms were all the same base, just themed a little, and a new apk here and there. So I ported my own and been with that/testing changes for a few weeks now.

Do you have a flashable zip I could get and test out?

If you mean my ROM... you can find it here....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072710
It's a hybrid ROM... sense based so all the flash of sense 1.0+sense 2.0 are there, but has shine of the customization options of cm7 baked into it

If you use WiFi, be sure to flash a custom sense kernel... people were having problems with WiFi on the stock kernel... there's a link to the netarchy's kernel page in my first post of my thread

I personally flash between ROMs when I see a ROM that has some features that look interesting, bug fixes, or when I get bored.
Also, from my experience of flashing ROMs, some features work better than others. I just make a back-up and switch between 2 or 3 ROMs depending on the circumstances and my need.
For example, one day, I wanted to play Super Mario Bros. 3 so I flashed over to a AOSP Rom - CM7 - so I could play the NES emulator with the Wii controller..
However, on CM7.0.3.1, my 4g crashes when tethering over wifi, but works perfect on usb tether mode. So with that, if I am wanting to tether wifi to watch a netflix movie on the tv, I flash over to either Warm2.2 or MikG 1.x.
I flash just about evening that comes out mostly to play with I'm on mikg v1.02 now and its working great.
And skyraider is a bad ass ROM I definitely have a backup of it thats what I usually run when I'm not near 4g but thats not to much now that 4g is working great even in my house if that ROM had 4g it would be perfect if you haven't tried it you should.

A friend of mine has asked me to root his phone and put a custom rom on there. As I have a HTC Glacier myself, I know nothing of the roms for the HTC Evo 4g. So I decided to ask the Evo 4g community directly what they feel is the best and most stable release to date?
Imo, synergy rls1.

In all honesty, the stock ROM is the most stable. HTC worked for a long time to make sure people would not have many issues with their software. As far as something that has some eye candy, try either KingsROM Alliance "The Breed" or Kinged Shooter E3D RLS 2.3. Stock is still my personal favorite as far as stability.
If you read the boards, you can see which ROMS people are having problems with and which ones are getting the best reviews, which leaves you with one real choice: MIUI

Yea I agree the best bet is to read around and see the bug tracker on a rom that may look promising to you. Honestly stock should be your most stable. Its what I put on peoples phones after I root it for them. Less calls that way.
Decks 1.2.1 AOSP, Tiamat 4.07, GPS fix_3, is also what I put on for those wanting a change from Sense roms. All no calls for issues with that rom...
MiUi is also pretty damn good, I run that on my sons phone for him
Is there a stock rom with the 4.53.651.1 update? I want voice search.

Quite sure if you look in the development section you will find one... Or do a search in google or development
MikG Sense ROM has been stable for me and looks great if you like the Sense interface.
Assuming you want most everything to work, including bluetooth:
AOSP based with 4G: CyanogenMod 7.1 RC1
AOSP based, no 4G: MIUI
Sense based with 4G: Shooter RLS 2.3 Odex
Sense based, no 4G: NocturnalRom Beta 3
Of course this is only my opinion. That is the great thing about custom ROMs, everyone has their own taste.
Synergy RLS1 non - godmode by myn is solid
