Hi all, I just rooted my phone using Amon-ra and unrevoked -- latest one. I am trying to do a nand backup so I can flash a kernel onto my phone, but I cant find the option.
When I power into the bootloader, and navigate to recovery. It gives me a red yield sign with an exclamation point. When I press volume up and power, it takes me to the Android system recovery <3e>. I see options to reboot system now (reboots back to main screen), apply sdcard:update.zip (which gives me some error), wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition.
I downloaded Rom manager but thats only for clockwork recovery.
What am I doing wrong? What do i need to do?
Thanks for the guidance.
Android with the yellow exclamation is the stock recovery. What happens when you hold vol down & press power?
BTW, this is also Q&A material, not development.
If I push volume down and power, it takes me to the Hboot/Bootloader, whatever that screen is called, where you have option to fastboot, recovery, etc.
Sorry I didnt realize this was development. I have been reading a lot of threads on this so I assumed incorrectly. Please feel free to move it, or I can do it manually.
Thanks again

What do you see at the top of the HBoot screen? S-ON or S-OFF?
Also, what H-Boot version?
Sounds like your Unrevoked didn't take. reboot your phone and try again.

I was told Amon-RA recovery was the best. I followed the instructions step by step. Even saw the $ change to #. What went wrong? Is there no way for me to create a backup with flashing other things? I mean do I even have a rooted phone? I know the superuser app doesnt have anything in it. Its blank! But I have a superuser app.

I think you can do one of 2 things:
1. Redo Unrevoked. If you scroll down to Recovery in the Fastboot/Bootloader screen and it takes you to the stock recovery then it didn't flash recovery.
2. Boot into your phone and, making sure USB is turned on in Settings > Applications > Development, use this from Amon-Ra's post
via fastboot
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img to a location where fastboot can find it.
Boot your phone into fastboot mode
fastboot devices(press enter) (to make sure that fastboot "sees" your phone)
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img(press enter)
Ok just tried doing the above:
Copied that recovery.img file to my sdcard.
Restarted phone into Hboot
Phone checked for PCIMG -> wasnt there
Then went into Fastboot
the following are the options that i have: Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, and power down.
not sure what to do?

Are u able to navigate to recovery just through hboot with the volume buttons?
If not, if you've used adb before use the command
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Then from there, since you're S-OFF you can do a full wipe and restore a backup or flash a ROM, if you have those things on your sd
Let me know if there are any other problems
Select bootloader option in hboot and then you will see recovery and just hit the power button when you want to enter recovery.

Thanks for the replies, and No, I'm unable to navigate the HBOOT with the volume controls at this point.
Would the ADB allow me to reset and set it into recovery mode whilst its in HBOOT mode? This might be something I'll look into once I get home.

The easiest way to use adb that I've found is to look for leith51's guide to flashing a radio, they have an easy flash guide that includes a zip with adb and all drivers included, and a .bat file for an easy start.
Click start here.bat, then type "adb devices" to see if the phone is recognised (it will print your phone's serial number) then go ahead with "adb reboot recovery"
If you can't find it I'll send it to you when i'm home from work
Format your whole phone and try again
here you go, i had it bookmarked on my laptop

double click the Start Here.bat

Hello
I recently started the root process by unlocking my bootloader utilizing the HTCDev Method with S-On (HBOOT- 2.18.0001). Now I'm unlocked! The next step (I guess) is to flash a custom recovery which I'm having difficulty doing. Granted, there are several ways to install a custom recovery. I utilized two of those ways, 1) Through Bootloader and 2) via ROM Manager; both have proved unsuccessful for me.
The Bootloader way - -
I placed PC36IMG.zip on the root of my sd card.
Selected FastBoot
Got a response, "Main Version is older! Update Fail!" Do you want to reboot device?"
Via Rom Manager - -
Download "Rom Manager" from the Android market
Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Result, An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, can anyone help me install a custom recovery?

You don't have to select fastboot.
Just put the recovery on your sd card, not in any folders.
make sure it's named pc36img.zip
Boot to recovery (Hold Volume down and power until hboot shows up)
It'll scan, find the file and ask you to update, hit yes
I advise this recovery: PC36IMG_ra-supersonic-4.3-smelkus-tmdirt2.zip
http://d-h.st/tbF
Don't use ROM Manager for flashing alternate recoveries, btw. It's based on Clockwork Mod, which isn't a good recovery for the EVO
Ok. Will try later tonight and will let you know the outcome.

Install latest 3g compatible android os Gb or Ics? 2.Flash a better recovery...one that works. 3. Flash a nice metro rom cyanogen or like that.
Ive read so many posts in different forums and couldn't find a case quite like mine or a up to date link.If someone could help me with recovery I think I can make due. Any other help is greatly appreciated

I followed your advice step by step and nothing happened. I'm in HBOOT settings and it just stays on the white screen with HBOOT and FASTBOOT highlighted in Blue.
I put the img file on my sd card (no folders) and renamed it (pc36img.zip).

You have to get the .img of your recovery and place it where you have your android sdk aka adb and fast boot and place them in the same directory. Then power down to the boot loader on your phone then using the volume keys select fast boot. Plug your phone into your PC. In a command prompt navigate to where your fastboot file is and type fast boot flash recovery (name of recovery image).img

Thanks, but here's the thing... 1. I've tried flashing other roms/recoveries on this phone via the recovery thats there now and the zip file is never in the folder where it should be (downloads) when I go to choose the file to flash its never there just some other unrelated zip. 2. The root or metrodroid v2.2/kernel that's there now took away all file managing apps (think free/stock files app) I can't even use appsaver to l load it...because theres no way to manage the files...yay! And 3. Theres no data/mms...I plan on flashing the fix along with a custom rom/kernel...it's the recovery! Please help thanks in advance.

You have to extract the recovery image out of the pc36img.zip file
Sent from my EVO 4G using xda app-developers app
Windows hides file extensions for known file types. What this means is that there is a hidden .zip at the end of your pc36img.zip so windows actually sees the file as pc36img.zip.zip
take the .zip you can see off of the file and try again - or I suppose you could change the command to reflect the extra .zip, but thats not really the "right" way to do it.
And if you are tyring to flash it directly with the phone that wont work either for two reasons 1) your phone does not recognize a file named.zip.zip also 2) if you are unlocked but s-on you cant flash that way, it needs to be done with fastboot. My phone is unlocked s-on and flashing the recovery was the hardest step to figure out because most guys decide to go full s-off and dont realize what the issue is...
It looks like you already got fastboot working so try this. Rename the recovery to "recovery.img" then the fastboot command would be
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
or if you dont rename the recovery file:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery (whatever the filename is)
you may also have to tell window to show file extensions for known file types, not sure how to do that in win 7, but im sure google does.
Same way you do it in every version of Windows.
Control Panel/Folder Options
OP, what software version are you on? If you're on version 5.07, the custom recoveries written for the older version (4.56, I think) won't work. Captain Throwback actually wrote two newer recoveries for the newer software version. I had the same problem with the error "Main Version is Older", until I flashed the new recovery. Also, I was UNLOCKED S-ON Hboot 2.18 and flashed the recovery through the bootloader without any issues. The new recoveries should be in the guide for rooting with Hboot 2.18. Just place the recovery file on the root of your SD card, make sure it's named PC36IMG.zip, then enter the bootloader. When it asks if you want to update, press the corresponding key for 'yes', and the new recovery will be installed.

Hey guys.
Couldn't find any other posts so I'm hoping I'm not breaking any rules.
Yes, I'm a n00b. Was handed down an old Desire Z still using Froyo and decided to install Cyanogenmod.
My attempted install didn't get past rooting for reasons unbeknownst to me. I used CM's guide: Installing CM for Vision. I got stuck at Rooting the Desire Z.
I followed it to the letter and made it to step 10. Upon reboot the phone reaches "HTC - quietly brilliant" and sounds it's little jingle. Goes black after a while and plays the jingle/logo again. And again. And again. I have to remove the battery to get it quiet again. I can make it to HBOOT and the screen displays (beware verbosity):

I believe the guide I followed installed a custom recovery image. Clockwork Recovery? Accessing RECOVERY results in a quick buzz with HTC logo and a prompt return to FASTBOOT. FACTORY RESET yields the same result. SIMLOCK comes up with "SD init fail !!! Process done, reboot device?" SYSTEM INFO comes up with what the title hints. I'll list if need be. IMAGE CRC comes up with checksums:
hboot: 0x2A125CF4
boot: 0xF7629548
recovery: 0x3921C16D
system: 0xD5CE705B
That's about as far as I can get from concise.
I've downloaded an RUU for it, have the Android SDK and Odin.
I'm not sure if the RUU will fix anything or how to install it. So my question is, how do I get my phone booting again?
Any feedback would be very appreciated.
you used THIS GUIDE? step ten is to check if gfree worked, did it? you didnt need to reboot first to check
anyway looking at your current spl i believe you should be fine, just flash a custom recovery in fastboot - download from CM SITE and check md5

Wait i think i am beginning to get you. Pls answer these questions
1. When you boot into bootloader and then select recovery, does it vibrate and gives you a black screen?
2. When you turn it off and connect it to a computer via usb, does the charging light come on and shows up as QHSUSB_DLOAD on your computer?
3. When you try flashing ruu, via placing the ***IMG.zip on your sdcard and boot to bootloader, does it detect the ruu, asks you weather you want to flash. And after pressing volume up for yes, its looks as if its flashing but after rebooting stays the same?
4. Or when you try to flash the system.img via fastboot, does it gets stuck flashing?
1) yes, it vibrates and then 7 vibrations (after 2~3 secs) and then a black screen, and hitting the power button wont reboot the phone
2) yes, and even when it is on and on black screen it gives it to me
3) yes
3) no, never tried it

Lol..you are in serious trouble.
You might be wondering how i knew all that.
Cause it happened to my old Desire HD(Still didnt know weather it was a DHD or Inspire 4G.
It turned out it was emmc problem.
You should think of getting a new device or getting a new motherboard as that was what i did.
I followed an unbrick thread here.
It never worked for me. But you could try.
I remember i installed a wrong QHSUSB_DLOAD drivers which kind of corrupted the bootloader.
So watch out what drivers you use. There might be a possiblity, your might work.

When i try to boot it into recovery, all i get is a red triangle and an exclamation mark "!". Now, how do i get about this problem?

Easy fix pal you have tried to flash a recovery or an update by adding a file named pc49img.zip to your bootloader. This method does not work for unlocked bootloader, only security off bootloaders (s-off).
You should download a pc49img.zip of clockworkmod (cwm) recovery which available in the development section, or in the stickied thread containing all the roms and recoverys. Download version 5.0.2.0 or 5.0.2.8.
so extract that zip file into your fastboot directory (the one you used to flash the unlock_token.bin you got from htc to unlock the bootloader) and make sure you delete any pc49img.zip files from your sdcard.
Then boot into bootloader. Use the power button to select fastboot on the device and connect it via usb to the computer. Lastly you should have a file called recovery.img in your fastboot directory after extracting your downloaded cwm zip file. If not, wrong download, try another
So, open a command prompt in the fastboot folder and issue these commands.
Fastboot getvar all
(if you dont get any information back then there is a connection issue and continuing will fail)(also dont post the information here as its device sensitive )
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now use your volume buttons to select recovery and hit power to select. The guides i have written to downgrade the hboot of this device can explain the new controls for the recovery so have a read at them, then install any rom of your choosing AFTER making a nandroid backup
Always nice to help out someone helping out an OAP
