G2 Tethering to a Galaxy S tablet? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i really want a Galaxy Tablet..but i'm not too excited paying 399 and signing up for a 2 year contract with tmobile. So i would much rather buy it outright for 599. Question is...is it at all possible to tether my G2 to that Tablet via 3 party App? Would PDAnet work? Is there an app out there i can stream the G2 as a Wifi app and pick up on the tablet?

ATT rep. told me " You would be able to use WiFi with the Motorola ATRIX LapDock, if you do no want the DataPro 4GB plan you can have the 200MB plan."
As far as I get - regular mobile internet (like 200Mb plan) wouldn't work in dock mode
Anyone know of a way to get this deal to Canada? Bell is still charging $299 for theirs...
=(
There are plenty of threads about the webtop hack that will let you use your current plan. It's ridiculous that they classify this as a separate device when it's the same exact hardware.

but do they all work long term though? I know a couple of those hacks have been only short term or even non working now that AT&T has gotten some smarts about them.
Culd anyone supply me with a link about the webtop tethering hack? Im interested since I just ordered one.
holy crap! buying one for myself and the wife for christmas!
i just got one from att yesterday...seezh i guess i got to call and get my $50back .....btw does anyone know if there is such a thing as an extender that can be used from these lapdocks to newer phones just curious
Would anyone be willing to ship one to Canada? I could send the total cost for it plus the shipping and what ever you would charge to do this through PayPal or pay to email?
Also, if I lived in the U. S. I would buy a few snd sell them on eBay, not everyone knows about the price yet, could make a few bucks there! Just a thought ;-)

I was just told by a rep (for what its worth) that those of us grandfathered into the unlimited data plans, we can use this on WiFi only without risking losing our unlimited data...
That's cause the datapro plan changes your plan. Use the search button for the webtop hack. I think its in Android Development. Its long term, just like the entitlement check for tethering.

Queston for people using GN on AT&T

If you are using a Galaxy Nexus from Europe on AT&T, does AT&T recognize the phone as a smartphone and force you into a smartphone data plan or can you go for the cheaper "dumbphone" plan?

Dont tell 'em. If they ask tell them its an unlocked nokia n75 or something. They consider that a dumbphone and it was a great smartphone for it's time.

I had an Atrix previously, and they told me, when I called to update my IMEI, that they had to switch my plan to a non-smartphone plan - unlimited for $10 month. I went for it to try it out. Same speeds as with my Atrix.
Then reading another thread about how ATT throttles the non smartphone plan, and you have to call and pester them into hooking you up to a 4G smartphone plan to pump up the speed, I did that. Now it's up another $35 a month, and guess what. NO SPEED DIFFERENCE. I called and asked to be switched back, and they tried a bunch of different settings to keep pulling that $35 out of my wallet, but they just couldn't produce.
Long story short, take the non-smartphone unlimited.
Alright, thanks guys. I guess I am going to get the Galaxy Nexus instead of the SGS 2 now
I guess the question is, how do you go about it?
I'm on tmo right now, need to move to ATT for signal reasons....how do I get this dumbphone plan? I mean I don't wanna enter into a contract so I'll have to go into the store to order it...won't I have to show them my phone and then they'll just be like "uh...that's not a dumbphone?"
I'm using a dumbphone plan with my Vibrant right now. All you have to do is go into the store with a non-smartphone, get a sim, and then put it in your smartphone.

Im referring to a stock phone not rooted
Why not root your phone and tether? Not hard.
Use FoxFi if you don't want to root.. you'll have to download the apk HERE.
At&t won't let you download from the market.

They used to ban all tethering apps but maybe it's changed since the last time I tried.

Foxfi doesnt show up in market for me on ATT, However verizon did get slapped by the FCC for blocking tethering apps because a deal they had with the FCC for the portion of networks they use, so maybe ATT will copy them since the two compainies copy eachother all the time anyway.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/...ettles-with-fcc-for-1/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter
I personally don't tether. But i know a lot of people that do, some pay for the service from att, some don't. if att is forced to cease blocking tether apps it would almost guarantee a severe enforcement of their policy on"illegal"tethering.
I also wanted to use Foxfi before I rooted, but I couldn't find it in the market. I'm now rooted, so I used the CWM " Tether and Cell Standby Fix" from the MODs section from this thread. It works fine, but I'd be nice if there was a home screen shortcut to enable/disable it quickly.
Hate to go off topic, but in my Captivate I use MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile market. This allow me to install Foxfi directly from the Android market from my rooted AT&T Captivate. I can not get MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile Market on the SGS3. Is there a replacement or fix for MarketAccess or a hack to emulate the T-Mobile Market from an AT&T SGS3?
So if i use foxfi att wont charge me for tethering right?
I have unlimited data on virgin in Canada but my plan does not include tethering and they charge a high rate per mb for tether usage, if i installed a custom rom that enabled tethering would they charge me? they dont when i use apps like clockworkmod tether
Recent at&t customer here, pardon my ignorance...but I'm on the 5gb plan and I thought that it included tethering? Is this not true for all the plans? Seems to me if you pay for 2gb 5gb or a million GB you should be able to use it however you please......
The 5gb plan on ATT does not include tethering unless you pay for it which is an extra $40/month last I checked. If you use tethering apps with ATT and you dont pay for the plan they will send you a test and email stating if you dont stop that they will add the tethering plan to your account automatically.
They are quick on catching you now too. Last time I tethered I used about 200mb of data and I got the email, took a week or so after to get it and yes they can detect you. There are ways to not be detected but they usually can.
About the guy saying you should be able to use it how you want is so true. Verizon just lost a class action lawsuit over this and now have to allow tether apps (which are not illegal) because we should beable to use our data and apps anyway we want without our carrier telling us how. We did buy our devices and pay for the service.
So maybe now other carriers will back off so they dont get sued. Because it was a nice chunk of change Verizon had to let go.
The 5GB plan does include tethering. Using the WiFi hotspot now mad posting this.

Unless they've changed their policy in the last two weeks the AT&T 5GB plan does NOT include tethering. I'm a ex-AT&T IT employee with their now defunct unlimited data plan still in effect as they cannot pull it from me. On my old old rooted and ROM'd Samsung Captivate i'd tether constantly without issue. Since I got the Galaxy S3 (a month ago & still stock) I tried it two weeks ago and the message came up telling me to call AT&T. I called and was told it's a $50 add-on data plan for hotspotting. Hell with that, FoxFi it is, let them tell me I can't do it. it's my data plan and it's unlimited no matter how I use it.

AT&T GoPhone

Hello all,
I recently changed over my OGP from AT&T postpaid to prepaid with the new $60 plan. The only issue I seem to be having is tethering. Does anyone know if Smartphone tethering is supported on the prepaid side? I would think data is data, and there would not be a restriction. Then again my wife reminds me that I get what I pay for.
Steve
Yes, according to ATT you should pay if you want tethering. .. but ,look around the forum and you will find the way to enable it on your phone... also, I doubt they'll notice unless you start passing your data limits...but you might not want to do that cause it costs an arm and a leg per Mb.
I used to have an old Unlimited for a NotSmart phone plan for $10/month and used tethering with no issues in my unlocked SGSII lol... Unfortunately, they discontinued that plan and after my contract was up I had to get a different plan...

Replacing my SGS3 with a Nexus 7

You read the title right, I want to replace my aging SGS3 with a Nexus 7 and use on my current unlimited ATT data plan. Is this possible? Will ATT notice? I know it's possible to make calls on the Nexus 7 with ease, I'm thinking If I'm on my unlimited data plan this shouldn't be a problem. I currently use about 20-30gbs a month streaming music while at work, don't make too many calls as it is. My only concern is will I be able to make the occasional calls over my data connection and will ATT notice I'm not using my minutes and have an issue with this.
My SGS3 will be traded in and go towards my Nexus 7 fund.

You cannot put a sim card in a N7. You would have to call up ATT and set up tethering, which will be an extra 10$ a month. You will have to have a smartphone in range to connect to its wireless hotspot. It is really not going to be worth it, as you will have to take your S3 everywhere you go. You could look into a N5 possibly.
Edit: If you have the mobile data N7 variant, you can call ATT and set up a data plan with it and cancel your smartphone data plan, but you would loose your unlimited.

I understand that you can move your "unlimited" plan to another smart phone, but not to a tablet or other device (LTE dongle).
Thanks, I figured it wouldn't work, I just wanted to reach out for a definite answer. I wasn't aware the N7 didn't take a Sim card. On Best Buy they have an unlocked version, does this matter?

N7 LTE does take a SIM card (Micro SIM to be precise)
The issue you'll run into is ATT will block your unlimited contract cause it will see you are on a tablet. It happened to me when I used my phone SIM in my Galaxy Tab...
