My uncle sent me his TP2 that he no longer had any use for. The packaging, casing, serial numbers, etc. attest to the hardware being from US Cellular. Then I realized that the phone is running on Verizon's ROM [3.04.605.3, 2.23.00WV], with all its settings, extras and what have you. Thought nothing of it, thinking that seeing Verizon at startup and at the home screen was a minor inconvenience. Then I came across the following problems:
- it's full of Verizon's pre-loaded add-ons
- it wouldn't let me change Verizon's MMS and GPRS/EDGE settings into the ones I'm using
- there seems to be a mis-assignment of hardware QWERTY keyboard functions [i.e. ; : ? ! _ - =, etc.], such that the system would take "," as the my shortcut button. Judging from the carrier TP2 screenshots, the system is following Verizon's keyboard layout, and the hardware keyboard layout is indeed US Cellular's.
Thought of doing a hard reset, hoping that doing that'd bring back the original(?) US cellular shipped ROM. But wouldn't that just restore the default Verizon ROM settings?
Or is there a way for me to replace the ROM altogether with the standard HTC, non-network dependent one? Or would doing this just mess up the phone even more?
What do you think I should do?

Flash the stock ROM from US Cellular's website. You don't need any custom anything from this site to do that. This will set everything right for you. The stock ROM is normally located in the support section of most carriers' sites.
You can also get the stock ROM from:
http://shipped-roms.com/
Oh. But would doing this make my phone locked to US Cellular?
*re: keyboard - i was able to tweak the the registry keymap first while i contemplate ROM flashing. I got most of the rather problematic keys reassigned except for the ",/SYM" key.

Was the phone locked before? Changing the ROM doesn't change whether or not it's locked to a carrier. If it's locked now, it will be locked when you change the ROM. If it isn't locked now, then it won't be locked when you change the ROM.

I can't find anyone that has posted one yet, but I have made one for all you that have one and have the screwed alt key! The registry file is attached! It is not a hack at all. Just a registry export that worked!

edit//Cab added to post.
edit2//Also, just an FYI for everyone, the TMO keyboard has the GBP and Euro symbols on the hardware keyboard, it just wasn't put on the key itself. It is the same keys as the HTC version for them. alt+e = euro and alt+r = pound symbol.
edit3//Make sure HLKM\Software\Tegic\eT9\Ime\KeyboardLayouFiles shows et9.rhodium.wwe.txt. Otherwise, the layout will still be messed up.
I think this should get stickied for a few weeks
If necessary. I am sure it will stay alive for a bit since a lot of us have the TMO version.
To be fair though, you get some of the credit. Your suggestion in that other thread is what made me do it. It took me about 1 hour of poking around.
Can any onecab this up for easy install? That would rock, changing values to match though reg editor does not work!
Just use Task Manager to import it. It worked for me.

Welcome to the wonderful world of modding your phone
Thanks but you are the one who did it.
Thanks! I have never used/done that type of stuff. I am just happy to be able to contribute finally.
Wow, I posted about this problem today and now their is a fix to it. You guys work fast and I didn't even get a chance to get use to the ctrl key that sub for the alt key.
Good looks!!!
EDIT: Confirming that it works! ....don't forget to reset because it won't work if you don't.
so what exactly is the problem with the tmobile us alt key anyway? i just got my tp2 yesterday and haven't really noticed a problem with it?
This is only an issue for people with cooked roms.

WOW~~ that worked. sweet!!
thanks again!!
Well my Rom is stock but I'll be sure to remember this if I flash a new one.
This fixes the alt key, for sure. But what about the shortcuts on the arrows? Those are still incorrect, for me. Is this a separate problem? I assumed it should be related, due to the fact that the shortcuts on the unlocked devices are different than the T-Mobile shortcuts.

Yep, HSPL is out now. haha

Thanks Dave!
what exactly does this fix ?
my ctrl button doesn't function at all but I thought it's due to the PDAC hebrew support I have.
also FN+SYM doesn't ddo anything.
my TP2 is unbranded.

As noted by the thread title, this ONLY applies to the TMO (T-Mobile) US branded TP2. It applies to NO other branded or unbranded TP2 devices. It fixes the keyboard layout changes that were implemented on the TMOUS TP2. The Alt, ctrl, and a few other keys had some changes.
To fix your keyboard, flash back to the original rom, export the same reg key that is in the first post, and then apply that to the newly flashed rom.
I have tried all three cabs below with zero success! Yes, these cabs remap if that the letters on the hardware keyboard but do nothing for the top row and symbols in blue. I can live without remapping the OK key if thats such a feat but need all other keys at least to be mapped the way they are suppose to be, they way they look on the hardware keyboard. Im sure many other users here will agree with me on this and hopefully others will pitch in as well.
Just looking for a simple cab to install so when i flash a custom rom that i can have FULL use of my hardware keyboard on my att tilt2, no more and no less. I have no knowledge in this stuff or id do it myself rather then provide stickies of a cab that does only half the job!
Since half the keyboard is already remapped, i will start the donation/bounty at $10USD and will add more if this can be done quick. If there's multiple people in on creating this for the community then i will be sure everyone truly involved gets a fair share as well.
Im no techy, just an end user but don't see this task to be complete rocket science.
What the hell !!! The symbols in blue???? Those are controled with the funtion key (FN) on the keyboard.

Yes of course they are. Im saying not only to remap the keys in white but also the ones controlled by the FN key, the symbols in blue. I dont believe my description is hard to understand. Simply look at an att tilt2 hardware keyboard, now have it work as it should, thats it! Not asking for anything else, just for all the keys on the hardware keyboard to work as they do when you first turn it on using the stock rom. Need a cab so it will work on custom roms since were not here to run stock roms.
Dont really know how else i can spell it out? Maybe take a picture of the att tilt2 hardware keyboard and post it?
I use the first one you list and all of my Keys work fine on my AT&T Tilt 2.

Are you saying the top row works fine and every blue symbol key in conjuction with the FN key works fine as well? What rom are you running? Makes no sense to me. Making me think i have one bunk device since ive tested this with a fresh flash without installing anything else.

I put that second script, install the cab (MortScript) then run the script file. soft reset and your good.
Some applications are weird and they swap the keys back to the original TP2 settings, but its very rare. It seems to work fine for me other than that. OH and when trying to use the hardware keys when dialing for a phone call its not right.. But I don't really use that anyways.

What rom are u using including build? I used the mort pacakge just as u described after a fresh flash of nrgs latest rom of build 23518 on wm6.5.3 standard sense 2.1 and nothing bro! Only keys that work right for me are the letter keys, comma, period, and question mark. Well FN, shift are also mapped correctly as well. Every key on the top row is numbers 1-0 and the blue symbol keys are all over the place! This is killing me!
No, you dont need to explain. I understood your post and as you can see, i am on a custom rom with the tilt 2 and all my buttons work perfect, except for the OK key. I also use the first cab in your OP. As for dialing, as pointed out by a respose here, have no clue if mine works that way. I use the onscreen dialer.
Something must be wrong with your phone!!!!
Im using NRGZ's Leo Rom the 21885 version from 12/31.... It could be an issue with the 23518 builds. The OK button has never worked but dont really need it. I would try it on a 21885 build and if it doesnt work it sounds like device specific. You also could flash a Stock Rom back on then back to a Custom one sometimes some of the previous system files arent removed correctly I have heard.
I have an att tilt 2 as well, and after flashing any rom other then att my keyboard is all wrong also, mainly the top row, and the Fn keys. Its pretty funny though without a remap, my shift key works as the FN key, and my OK key works as a shift key, which I find funny. But attached is the cab I always have used every time, and every key with the exception of the OK key works, I have tested this 1,000,000 times. If this cab doesnt work (Which I think could be the third cab in your list but not sure), then you have a bad keyboard.
I have used this cab with, the stock EU rom, nrgz roms, valkyrie's roms, Arks roms.
I have remapped my keyboard layout easily by editing the keyboard txt-file....was no big problem....every row is listed in his file, and you can put in whatever letter/symbol you want....
little hijack
Sorry for hijacking the thread a little. I've got a dilemma here, I'm about to change my physical keyboard (in fact the whole casing) for the one that has tilt2 layout (or maybe just the casing leaving the old keyboard untouched). How do you Tilt2 guys manage without the "Ctrl" key?!!!

Most people will think you are crazy, most tilt2 people want the standard tp2 keyboard. but to your question: since the ok button doesnt work, I mapped "OK" using keyboard config to be a CTRL button

Is it the ATT keypad.dll? and you just open it with a text editor like notepad or something? I have been searching and it seems like that is what I should be looking for but I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance.
Sorry Deeznuts, but either you aren't explaining it right (which I think you are) or (more likely) there is something wrong. I have a Tilt 2\ATT and the keyboard fix cabs do work in every ROM I have installed. (With the exeption of only about three blue keys like the shortcut to mail or the internet.) There is either something wrong with your device or the ROM that you are using. I suggest you start over with a different ROM to test your keyboard, maybe use a stock ROM to be sure. There is also a prog called Rhodium Keyboard Control (RhodiumKbdControl_GSM.cab) that might be of use. Good luck.
I've been using the Tilt2HWKeyboard.cab and all the symbols and numbers work fine.
OK button does not work, sometimes it launches opera, other times i get error message with something about start.exe
FN+Left arrow (supposed to be calendar) Launches opera
FN+Down arrow (supposed to launch internet browser) does nothing
FN+Right arrow (supposed to turn on wifi) opens up comm manager.
I don't mind that those are off, but would prefer the OK button to work and also PTT button does not work at all.
I'm down to put in $10 as well to get a cab that has the full use of the HW keyboard + PTT button

I was looking at that text files, and it appears to be mapped correctly, but the top row is still messed up for me and the blue function keys are not correct either.
Can you post how you modified the text file please?
Mine works fine. I used instructions from a certain thread. I first installed the Tilt2HWKeyboard cab. I then installed a cab called SdkCerts. Then I installed a cab called RhodiumKbdControl_GSM.
$20 for 1 single step install at&t tilt2 keyboard ALL BUTTONS MUST WORK INCLUDING PTT AND OK BUTTON I DONT CARE IF IS A MORT SCRIPT A CAB OR XML
Hes NOT CRAZY lol
I have the same exact issue. ive tried different cabs to no change except . ? , still sont know where the hell at symbol is... I GOT 10 usd for a working cab or a soloution where every key works as should...besides a stock re flash!
What apps are you running bro? Im running the apr8 nrg rom too. idk! dont make sense to me. but even when i ran stock rom keys would switch to this configuratio noccasionally in txt msging!
i would close all the way out of txt and open it back up and keys back to normal. Im seriously about burned out on hunting fixes for these damned phones, stock and otherwise. Ive owned every HTC w a slide keyboard that att offered since 8125 (wizard)
and played hunt and fix on every single one. seriously, what other product would u pay 400 plus dollars for and then spennd countless hours searching for fixes just to make it work properly
I was checking what I have under \Windows in my device and discovered a "hidden" Voicemail visual app in Tilt2. Just run voicemail.exe (if you use a file explorer, just click on it) and you will get a nice voicemail UI. Under Menu you can reply, call back or fwd. I know that there is a voicemail app for Tmobile version of TP2, but I am sure ATT did not advertise such a feature for TILT2. How can one use this app, is it functional?
interesting would like to know too !
I havnt used the stock rom in quite some time... I wonder if someone can strip it out and make a cab
I'm using the EU Rom and there is nothing like that in my rom, might be an att app, I have the att rom, I'll dump it and see what I can find tomorrow.

I actually still run the stock AT&T rom and can make a cab if you tell me how to do it, never done it before . This voicemail app does not work with my voicemail no matter what i tried to do. I guess there need to be some registry changes to make it work with the phone.
i have this too in the Vodafone ROM....
I look at the ATT rom, I only found 1 voicemail.exe file, got to give me more info, like version, size, something cause I dont see it in the 6.5 2.1 rom I have, unless that one file is it.

I have this info in my signature, yes, i do run stock AT&T WM 6.5 with TF3d (2.1). I turned off UI though. And yes, there is just one file voicemail.exe and one file voicemail.bmp (these files are attached). If you open this app, its interface and menu are dimmed. I feel there are some registry settings that can be changed to make this app usable/workable. This is a reason why I opened this thread to bring this to the attention of experienced users at xda forum.

That basically makes sense. There was a time when PPC phones released through ATT had a blackberry connect option on all their stock roms. Presumably this was to make the transition easier for those migrating from bb. Wonder if anyone with a bb on att could add this service then throw their sim into the ppc and see if it works. I doubt we wil ever get it for free but i wonder..,
I have seen some wonderful cooked ROMs for TP2 devices in these forums and elsewhere, many of which with excellent appearance, performance and functionalities. Some cooks are even thoughtful enough to make both GSM and CDMA versions. However, my use of such has stumbled on the following very significant obstacle: the physical keyboard (aka "the main reason why people purchase this device in the first place").
I have identified at least three types of keyboard on TP2 devices depending on whether they are directly supplied by HTC or if they come from carriers such as Verizon or Sprint. Not only do the carrier devices not have a Ctrl key like the original one does, but they also differ regarding other key mappings. There are also differences between the keyboards in Verizon and Sprint phones as to the location of the comma, underline, other punctuation marks, special characters, and functions.
As I own a Sprint Version device, most ROMs I install tend to jumble up the functioning of the keyboards so that I end up pressing one key and getting a different symbol in response. Therefore, I am now using the WM 6.5 update issued by Verizon March 19th 2010, having upgraded Windows Mobile Office and Windows Live through the Microsoft Marketplace service.
I wish I could upgrade do WM 6.5.3 and also take advantage of some goodies provided in cooked ROMS, such as crapware removal, upgraded versions of pre-installed apps, improved interface, etc., but I don't want to scramble my keyboard. I also do not want to have to install keymapping software, for I am Brazilian and already use AEKmap to generate the special characters in the Portuguese language (á, à, ã, é, ê, ç, etc.), so i dont want do complicate matters in that department.
Anyone know where I can find good Sprint-keyboard-friendly customized ROMs? Or, perhaps, some other way of dealing with this issue?
Thx in advance.
Energy ROM has a function in Start>Tools called "Carrier Provisioning" which will automatically remap the keyboard for your TP2 version. Other cooks may have similar solutions.
But I'm not sure how you will get the Brazilian characters you're looking for. There is a Rhodium Keyboard Controller CAB (below) that works really well to remap keys, but I don't know if/how you can get the Brazilian characters.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554240
You're in the wrong forum to ask about Verizon/Sprint phones, since they're CDMA and this forum is about GSM ROMs. Check out either the Rhodium CDMA sub-forum, or (probably better) ppcgeeks.com which tends to have much better coverage for CDMA devices.

Thx for your response.
If there is such a function, I believe it would most definitely help me out. The Energy ROMs are precisely what I had in mind. Is this a new addition? I was reading the Energy forums and October last year there were still issues with Sprint phones.
Regarding the special characters I need, AEKmap works just fine. I just didn't wanto to have to include extra settings (create a third keyboard layout) to correct any jumbling from the ROM.

Given that I was not referring to a GSM x CDMA issue (I originally mentioned that this has already been addressed by developers), I though that the ROM forum would be the best choice.

I might have got it wrong. But I thought you have a Sprint phone (i.e. a CDMA TP2) and you want to get the keyboard working properly on it ? If so, then that's a CDMA ROM issue.
Not trying to be unhelpful here, quite the opposite - I'm suggesting you'd get much better help if you went to ppcgeeks.com and asked on this, because there would be a lot more people with CDMA TP2s there.
Hi
Yes i have searched the forum.
Please fully read the description of my problem before advising me to do something i already stated i have tried.
I have an unlocked GSM TPII.
ROM: Simplicity WWE ROM (date 03/27/2011) ver 5.2.29017 (29017.5.3.12) according to winmob phone info
No reg tweaks or anything else to account for the behaviour. Had phone a few months now with no real issues. Haven't installed any txt/typing related software recently.
Just out of the blue the other day my hardware keyboard starts acting weird.
The main alphabet keys are fine. But the top row number keys are only producing symbols ( NO I AM NOT IN SYMBOL MODE).
The symbols are not even the correct symbols for the corresponding number keys either.
As number inputs unshifted/or func keyed i get
[email protected] 2=_ 3=! 4=( 5=) 6=' 7=" 8=; 9=: 0=/
Shifting makes no difference at all
With Func key on i get
1=% 2=¢ 3=$ 4=& 5=* 6=1 7=2 8=3 9=# 0==(yes = )
Nothing seems to change this behaviour, checked every input and txt/type setting, rebooted a few times, still the same. Figuring it must be a reg setting.
Any help hugely appreciated as this is seriously messing with my txting.
Thanks in advance
Zeb
Seems you haven't gone drastic and flashed...
So either hard reset and go back to default on the ROM you're on, or go all out crazy and flash stock.
Certainly would rule it out... Sorry I don't have more specific advice.
Hi m8
Thanks for the prompt reply, was hoping to be able to avoid a full reset.
But hoohum .....
Just got cobaltcontroller, FPseCE, etc, etc all nicely installed and setup.
Oh well....
Any recommendations on a different ROM?? GSM as am in uk, simplicity wasn't my choice prev owner flashed it.
Hopefully someone else has reg fix or something
Thanks m8
