Is this dangerous... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just installed netarchy 4.1.9 over BS 1.8, and it could be under clocked o 125Mhz. Is it safe to have the Processor work at that speed when screen is off and the min value in setCPU.
Don't want to mess the love of my life.

Thread moved to Q&A.

first this is definatly the wrong forum for this. it should be in the Q&A area.
Development is a forum where developers can post there works and isnt intended for people to ask general questions. If you have a question on something someone developed and posted in the development forum it should be in that "projects" thread.
second. If you use the search you can find a TON of information on SetCPU profiles and what is ok and not and normally it is expected that you search some yourself before posting not only to help keep the forum clean but also its hard to expect others to keep answering the same questions for people who cant even be bothered to try and help themselves first. (think of XDA as a library of information)
Now to answer your questin.
yes it is safe, i will say however that the performance is very poor and most do nto like having it clocked that low because of this. most stick to 256 or above while the screen is off so that start up doesnt lag as baddly.

You can try, my phone doesn't like to be clocked that low and reboots, mine also doesn't like 1.267 and reboots. I usually don't overclock and I only underclock to 245.

My phone also dislikes being clocked that low and will lag considerably bad when trying to wake up, sometimes only recovering after changing the clock up to 256 and rebooting. Also I clock at 1.19 as my phone reboots itself above 1.2. Seems to be a common pattern if you look around I would follow that.

I remember reading somewhere that the voltage for 128 and 256 is the same, so there is really no point in clocking it that low. Basically, it takes the same battery to run at 128 as 256, and 128 seems to cause problems anyways.

128MHz is fine on my phone with the screen off, with absolutely no lag turning it on.

does undervolting the cpu make it go any slower?

Hi, I was just wondering if undervolting the CPU makes it any slower, I am using voltage control and set it on -75 milliamps, will that make the cpu any slower?
Thanks
I dont think slower, more like if you drop it to low, it will lock up and you'll get errors and corruption. If its running good, your prob fine. I don't know how low off hand you can go.
Ps.. your so going to get *****ed at. Wrong place for this question.

i could have sworn i put this in q and a.
Please move this to q and a, thanks
Answer is NO.
No need to move it, just let it die...
Moved to Q&A, and no; you either run a level of UV fine and normal, or your phone crashes

Why is this? Quadrant score

Hello. I have flashed the Synergy kernel for CM7 and I have CyanogenMod Self-Kang. I am overclocked to 1.8Ghz and have the lag free governor. Why is it that when I run a benchmark I get such low results? Take a look:
I've seen people getting around 5000 on this device! Is there a reason why it is under 4000?

Edit: OK thanks. I am not going to post anymore and I encourage other people not to (by not post I mean in this "Why is this" forum. I'm sorry I posted in the wrong place...
first, wrong forum. Should put this in Q&A
second, Quadrant results means nothing, my phone is giving me 3k and it doesn't lag what so ever.
I've never hit 5000 with my phone I'm always in between 3000-4400. Plus benchmark scores mean nothing. Even if the device is not hardware accelerated it will still be lag free. Not to mention this post should of been in the "General" section. It is not about development. Re-post your question in General, you might get more answers.
Yo just because 1 person got away with posting in the wrong forum yesterday does not mean you can ask questions here. This is why we have different sections in the first place. Follow the rules of the forum and do your research because if you did you would have found out that quadrant means nothing.

STOP USING QUADRANT!!!
Use a program that has been updated like Antutu.
Quadrant has not been updated in over a year. Let it die for the sake of human kind.

Quadrant really doesn't do a very good job of true benchmarking, and it's WAY too easy to fool it. Some very simple hacks can be done to artificially increase the score by a large amount. For example:
1. enabling stagefright by default in the build.prop can do this (on some stock roms.) This will make it so the h.264 encoding test will be falsely inflated.
2. Tricking the system into using a ramdisk for it's IO test instead of the actual nand. This one should be self explanitory.
3. On the old galaxy phones, that used rfs for the filesystem, if converted to EXT4 it would give a HUGE boost, but no real world performance difference. (Quandrant doesn't seem to read rfs correctly.)
And believe me, there are PLENTY of others. No to mention its not optimized for more than one core.
Benchmarks mean nothing. Real world usability does, unless it's just an e-peen thing, my benchmarks are better than yours type of thing. It's kind of like overclocking. I've NEVER seen the point in it (on a cell phone, not a pc.) You end up taking a risk of greatly reducing the lifespan of your cpu for 2-3 extra frames a second in games, drain more battery power, and again, in real world use you won't see a difference at all.
If you're trying to show off to others how cool your phone is, instead of showing them quad scores that mean nothing, why not let them USE it for a few minutes? That's what sold me on this phone when I bought it, using someone's for about 15 minutes
It could have been he was using performance governor and cleared out his ram. That would cause a height quadrant score.

[Q] Overclock

Well i have a phone, and in that forum members says that Overclock the cpu shorts the motherboard life, is that true? and for those who are using Overclock, do u really feel something diferent with the performance of the tablet? or do u see something wrong with Overclock? like random reeboots or makes the tablet hot? Im thinking in OC or not my tab, so i wanna see the experience from other members, thx in advance. :good:

I cover this in the guide I wrote in general (which has been pushed down quite a ways) but anyways here goes another version.
Overclocking varies from device to device, even of the same model. Variances in tolerance is on a per chip basis, as long as they pass within a certain range they are sent out for production in devices. Overclocking in general is within means of the chip's abilities, if it isn't, you'll know it. Generally speaking, 1.4 GHz is perfectly fine on our devices. 1.5 GHz is also usually ok, but is the upper end of what the Tegra2 can usually tolerate. Few an go past 1.58 GHz, my old G2x's tegra2 could hit 1.7 GHz,but that's well beyond "normal" range.
Overclocking a device is the same as overclocking a PC, you need to be careful with it. Don't just ramp it to 65% overclock and expect it to run fine. Every chip is different. Do it in steps, and test each step before moving on. Test it in normal usage, test it in heavy usage, gaming, etc.
An overclocked device will certainly run hotter then normal, it's running faster, drawing more power, and that creates a hotter running core, no way around it. Keeping in mind there is no airflow in these things, that makes the biggest enemy to CPUs even more dangerous.Does it run so hot that it can shorten component life? Sure it can. Will you still have the device when it happens? I doubt it. Likely, we'll be on Tegra5 before it even begins to show signs of stress.
One of the nice things, though, is our CPUs range so much in speed according to load that just because your Max is 1.5 GHz, it doesn't always run there. Most times, it won't even be in the overclocked speeds. Does it run faster? Sure does. Benchmarks will raise nicely, and games that maybe got choppy before will smooth out, movies that couldn't play well will be fluid, the heavens will align, mankind will discover world peace and I'll win the lottery.
All that being said, I don't usually overclock, in fact I tend to underclock a little to 800MHz. Its usually sufficient to do normal tablet stuff, and I adjust the speed according to what I require. If my movie is lagging, I'll bump it up until it smooths out. Same for a game if it needs it.
In the end, its all personal choice, really. Just because you CAN overclock, doesn't mean you NEED to. IMO a well tuned governor will give as good a result as overclocking in normal usage, and a good I/O Scheduler will also help alot, without adding anymore heat or stress to your device.
TL;DNR:
Overclocking is fun. It causes more heat. It likely won't explode within the time you own it. Or your children. Your battery will suck.
thanks pio for the answer, thats what i needed to read, cuz usually when u talk about OC its like "yeah dude, OC its "tha greeeeeat doi it dude" or something like "dont do it!!! u will decrease your tablet life" and yes, i know that devices are way to diferent even if they are the same model, and also im agree with u, governors and I/O works better than OC but we dont have many for our device, i miss the smartass v2 governor,or the brazzilianwax too, but well, hope someone can port it for us someday.

overheating galaxy s2 hercules t989

hello. I have a galaxys s2 hercules t989 known as tmobile. the problem is that the cell overheats me much when I use it and when charging too. the same load power cycled only takes 2 days to load. heats up like an oven. someone will know the problem this past me and I can help?
I'm having the same problem, it's not as bad on stock roms as on custom roms not sure why.
I have the original jelly bean I 4.1 and I've put several original and custom rom and is still overheating. I think it is problem of romsfirst
You guys need to check CPU usage
Install CPU usage app and load the timeline (also press the second button to see system apps). You can see which which one is using the most CPU power and terminate it. If that fixes it, you can uninstall or disable that particular app.
ok. result will do that and post them. thanks

Custom ROMS + kernels may have overclocked GPU and CPU for a performance increase. This will cause your phone to get hot. Hot Hot...If you're stock, there is something running in the background as others have suggested. If it's a custom ROM, install something like Trickerster MOD and check to see what your CPU and GPU are set at...Anything over 1512 (CPU) and 266 (GPU) will cause increase in heat due to the processors running past their stock settings.
Governor
If your capable of changing the governor like CM or other Roms with custom Kernal's, find a setting that doesn't use a lot of juice all the time. I keep mine on Smartass or conservative if i'm not using it or charging it. I had the same issue before because I had it set to ondemand or performance. Hope that Helps

NOPE
I have the same problem but it isnt the battery thats heating up, if you take the back cover off, and feel the battery, it is not heating up. I did get this problem when i installed a custom rom, i had issues with that one including the battery life so i switched back to official jellybean 4.1.2 or whatever, and the battery is fine, does still get hot though but not as much, or maybe were all huluscinating

Over clocking???

Dear ppl of this fourm you kick butt. I was able to unlock and root my g power 2022. I'm a little nervous I can't get twrp back up working, I know it's out there I just want it more main stream.
Here's my question. Over clocking is it possible on this phone. The battery is great and at the end of a long day I'm well over 60% I'd love to turn the clock up on this phone. All the apps you see on ps don't do anything, they also say 2301 is the max mhz. Is it a locked CPU????
Thanks for your time guys and girls
Overclocking a phone is not advisable, because of the extremely limited cooling capacity.
Also, don't use profanity on XDA. Post edited.
I'm very sorry about that. Thanks for fixing it.
I did some bench marks of my phone and the temp bearly moved. I understand the heat that builds up during over clocking and also that mounting a water cooling solution is not possible. I just wondered if it was possible to move the cpu clock ???
Any other ideas on speeding it up??? I'm sure there is a ton I don't know about.
So I did find an app root booster. It's free for the basic over clocking and you can go extreme for a one time but. I am using the free version. And I picked up 6 points on 3d mark. The phone has been very stable all day. It's all preset stuff. Witch is probably better than trial and error.
