So we've got root access. Awesome. Everyone has been looking forward to installing apps to their SD card as well as other neat tricks.
Well, I haven't.
I hate to be the buzz killer but there is a fundamental flaw with the way apps are installed and uninstalled that means even moving them to a spacious SD card is not solving the problem.
Before I go rooting the phone and hacking as a way to eliminate some of the more annoying problems with Android, we need to first distinguish between bugs, technical limitations and poor implementation. Not allowing installs to the SD card out of the box is a technical limitation...Apps2sd creates a Linux partition on your SD but it's not ideal.
But that's neither here nor there. I'm not here to discuss the reletive merits of rooting or using apps2sd. What I want is the underlying code to work properly before I go hacking. It doesn't matter if we only have 100mb of space or 2GB for apps. If I install a 2mb app and them remove it I want the WHOLE 2mb back.
This morning news of the pre release alpha of Fennec (mobile Firefox) was announced. I attempted to install it but there was only 25mb of space on my phone. Apparently this is a BIG install and needed about 39mb. Anyway long story short, it didn't work. No matter how much space I cleared (up to 40.89mb at one point) it still told me I didn't have enough space.
So now I have a phone with 40mb of space and I had to clear out some unused apps to get there...I also cleared out my IM app, Nimbuzz, which I DO use. So I figure I'd install it again...but I'm thinking, it was big! Over 4mb installed. I figure I'll look for a smaller lighter app. I try Meego. Nice, small, but no Skype chat. So I uninstall and try Fring. Nice, has Skype...but no Facebook. The only one with the features I want is Nimbuzz. So I uninstall Fring. Two apps installed. Two apps removed. I look at my space. 35mb.
5mb has seemingly vanished into nothing!!! Meego was only about 500kb. Fring about 1.5mb. Where did all that space go?!?
I reset and there's no difference.
So to my experiment. I needed to verify the space suck bug.
Reset phone. I'm starting with 39.89mb.
Install Robo Defence Free. It's advertised as 1.25mb.
Reset phone. 38.02mb. I've used up 1.87mb with that install. According to App Manager Robo Defence is using up 1.41mb.
Uninstall Robo Defence. 38.18mb. Restart. final = 39.42mb.
In just one app install and removal, I've lost 0.47mb
Why? What has used that space?
Despite having 40mb of space this morning when attempting to install Fennec, I have since removed Nimbuzz, Shopper, Robo Defence, Poker, Layar, and Google Translate and I've not gotten back up to 40mb.
Can someone tell me what the hell is going on?

I hope someone can get to the bottom of it...
Try going to settings - applications - manage applications then hit menu and choose sort by size. This should show you the biggest space hog. My guess is that the browser and/or market caches are getting big as you're browsing for these apps. You can press on market and there will be a button to clear the cache, same for internet.

Have you tried to delete the cache and the data of the application before uninstalling it ?
Under settings/applications/manage applications when you choose an app you can see the size of the application but also the size of the data and the size of the cache. Maybe uninstalling an app don't remove at least the data and/or cache...

Enjoy your phone and dont quibble over 0.47MB when you have 32gb to play with. A massive thanks to Paul for getting us this root in the first place, we now have options to do anything we want with the phone.

But worring over small, irrelivant problems will just lower your enjoyment of this beast! Take a chill pill and enjoy that wee can now install apps on the sd card and are not limited to space

What about those of us who don't plan to root? I think the OP's point here was that this is an issue and rooting isn't really a solution for a lot of people.
Why would you not root? I dont see why you would not open your phone up to obvious advantages and extra app's, especially when these apps have the potential to extend battery life and volume levels, two of which we know with the Desire are pretty dire.

First installing to SD slows down your apps noticeably. It's not ideal. It's the best solution we have RIGHT NOW, but don't mistake that for being a good thing.
I'm not quibbling over 0.45mb. If you reread I LOST 5mb! That's enough space for a few apps, no?
My point being that up until now this clear bug (losing data that doesn't seem to be associated with an app so is therefore not counted in it's cache and is not cleared) has been ignored by throwing SD space at it. That's foolish.
Well i get just over 1.5 days battery life and volume is not too bad for me, but i would like the music volume to be louder Also the main thin gthe root would mean for me is that i could get the Nexus rom on to my Desire and hopefully get a quick update to Froyo Because lets face it, how long are we going to wait for HTC to update sense???

The only reason i bought the desire was because of the slightly more RAM and actual buttons instead of touchscreen buttons Sense isnt a real big must for me

Well, yeah! The Desire as it is does exactly what I want it to out the box. I had to cook my own ROM for my HD2 to get it working as I want but this just works!!
I prefer the eye candy of Sense, stock Android is boring and I hate using garish themes...if I feel the need to root it I will but as it is I have no need to

same here. I've two Desire, installed exactly the same apps and had a difference of 12 mb afterwards. I tried to delete every cache a.s.o, still a difference of 5 mb.. reboot .. nothing changed. Next day -> reboot again -> 2 mb difference? No clue what's exactly going on with the rom.
@sense: I bought the desire cause i thought it can't be worse than the nexus one cause if i don't like sense, just install launcher2 and deactivate it. What i did not know: HTC just removed some stock android applications and integrated their crappy apps, and in addition they implement some features i want to REMOVE, i do not want to see them anymore (f.e. flickr.. why flickr? this is android/google, i want a picasa button!, tweet, stocks a.s.o... no uninstall option).
I need root to get rid of the things i don´t like.
I did say sorry for it - he's the one coming back at me!!
I'll leave it now mate, my 2p though, I personally don't care about the memory - if it gets to a point when I do I'll hard reset and start again. Probably just needs the Android equivalent of a defrag!!
Have done two hard resets (not for this reason) and my memory was lower after each - something to do with the re-installing of the apps I surmise?

That's strange. After a hard reset it should have exactly the same memory each time. After all, that's the whole point of a hard reset.
And I must say that the issue raised by OP is very worrying. Installing and then uninstalling applications should give you back the exact same memory as you had before. I can accept residual files on the SD card, but the precious space on the internal flash should definately be fully reclaimed after an uninstall.
If not, there is a fundamental flaw somewhere. If anyone can shed more light on this issue, please do so!
Hi, Noob here. I have been wrestling with a "Low on Space" error for the last couple weeks. I understand it is a partition issue, and I'm hoping there is a ROM that will resolve the issue. The phone is rooted, but otherwise stock.
I have searched, but was not able to find a post that addresses this issue, even though it seems to be a common one. Maybe I just don't know the lingo.
Could someone point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe someone can chime in and explain the "partition issue," I'm wondering what that is and why it would be necessary.
Low on space, Google not syncing...
I've recently been getting the "low on space" error too which has been preventing my google accounts (gmail, contacts, calendar, music) from syncing... I'd remove apps, move apps to SD, clear cache and still get the error with no syncing. I thought Twitter was the culprit so I removed that app and then everything started syncing and the error went away. At that point I then added google music beta to sync and once that finished I got the error again and google wouldn't sync. I then cleared data on google music beta and now able to sync again. I'm guessing google music is the culprit, but I thought that would just be caching to the sd card... This is really frustrating since I cannot utilize google music beta right now.
I have plenty of space available as well:
SD: 8.5 free out of 15.5
Internal: 6.2 free out of 6.6
Phone memory: 302 free out of 748.

I am having the same Google sync issues as well, gdemore. It is not really a space issue, as I have plenty available:
SD: 5.2 free out of 7.5
Internal: 4.5 free out of 6.6
Phone memory: 407 free out of 748.
I have moved all apps to SD that I could, and use "1tap cache cleaner" from time to time.
I have gotten the "Low on Space" issue intermittently since the phone was new, but a reboot always made it go away until now.
Is the "Low on Space" error not a common problem on Droid Incredibles? After doing some Google searches, I thought it was. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Go to setting, applications, running and look at what apps are taking up space. Usually twitter, Google earth, Facebook. When you open so many images it caches them so you can review them with minimal loading time but at the cost of precious space. Anytime I get the error I clear data on these apps and it goes away for months, until I've viewed a ton of pictures again, hope this helps

Clear cache/dalvik, try freeing up some memory by killing a few apps.
Thanks KKellett & dmeadows. I have tried clearing cache, killing apps, clearing data, etc.... I still have the Low on Space error. I'm going to pick a ROM to flash, hoping that will resolve the issue. Maybe getting rid of the bloatware will help.
Given that I have so much space on the phone (see above), I was hoping for a solution that didn't require constant cache clearing/app killing/data clearing, etc. I was hoping some of the ROMs would allow the phone to use more available memory for cache space than is currently allotted. IMHO i shouldn't need to micro-manage apps/cache with so much memory available.
Check your data/data and system/app directories with root explorer and see if there isn't some stuff you can get rid of.

The "low on space" error comes when the \data\data partition, limited to 150 megabytes, becomes 90% full. Deodexed ROM's tend to take up more space in that partition than odexed ROM's. Sense takes up a considerable amount of space there, as do contacts. For instance, my daughter has thousands of Google and FB contacts, and they are taking up nearly half of the space.
There are two ways I have found to "fix" the problem.
1. Using Titanium Backup Pro, be sure to re-integrate any updated apps back into the ROM (that will take their data out of the partition); and
2. Purchase NotEnoughSpace, which enables you to create a partition outside of \data\data and move the bigger space hogs out of it. I run it regularly and keep at least 40 megabytes free in \data\data to avoid the problem.

Thanks for the tip and the background knowledge hgoldner! I'll give that a shot.
I've been getting the same warning as the OP for a week or so now...
Rooted DINC, but still on stock rom. "Appears to have" plenty of space available.
There is a fix, and no it is not deleting all your apps to get it to go away.
Basically for some real dumb reason HTC has given the data/data folder 150MB of storage space and when that gets close to full you will not be able to add anymore apps to your phone. So even if you have 5+GB of space left you are stuck.
But there is an app in the market called "NotEnoughSpace" that I was a little leary on trying at first but after getting it and seeing that it works great I wanted to share this with everyone.
I was able to move Google Earth's 16MB to the partition this app created and have it work, and freed up all that space in my data/data folder.
BTW INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
1) Create a partition (I made a 1GB one on the phone in emmc)
2) Pick an app taking up a lot of space (like Google Earth) the app will show you how much space each app takes up in the data/data folder so you will learn why you are having an issue.
3) Click to open up the app (Inside NotEnoughSpace of course) and click all the sub directories (most apps have 4-5) and move them ALL to the partition.
That's it. And you can always move everything back if you want. But just note that if you move the app itself OR don't move every sub directory the app wont work after a reboot. Took me a few tries and multiple reboots to figure this all out but now I am good to go and freed up much space.
I had mixed results using NotEnoughSpace while reflashing ROMs and restoring my apps with Titanium. I'm a bit nervous to use it with anything I don't mind a fresh install of.
I used to have this problem all the time but since I've started flashing ROMs it hasn't been an issue. When I was running stock I would just clear the app data for my browser, facebook, and dialer (this is your text messages), usually worked.
Clearing the data for my Dialer App did the trick. Haven't had any space errors since!
Used SMS Backup+ to keep them just in case ;-)

Without rooting you can delete apps. The lib files and to a lesser extent the data files fill up /data/data partition which has a total size of 149 mb (crazy low). Netflix has a 19.3 mb lib file and and Google Earth uses 16.61 mb. Also syncing facebook can take up a lot of space in data files.
If rooted I like link2sd which allows you to create a symbolic link for the larger files to the SD card. I am using about 70 mb of the /data/data partition only moving a few big files over to SD.
If I root my phone, do I need a new ROM or can I leave Sense UI on my phone? I'd really only being rooting to fix this issue. I'm not interested in playing with other things. I don't have much of a software/programming background, and I honestly don't want to mess with it.

I searched a good bit, but couldn't find the answer to this specific question. Will gaining root access get rid of the low memory error? I'd just ignore the error, except it keeps the gmail app from syncing. Sorry if it's a dumb question. I was hoping the 2.3 update would fix it, but it doesn't sound like it does, and now it's starting to sound like I may never get it! I may have to take the plunge and root....

Gaining root itself won't fix the error. However, many custom ROMs have it fixed. Not sure about the Sense ones, but the AOSP ones such as MIUI or CyanogenMod do.

I don't think moving apps to SD works. I had it with a ROM I used and it's not an actual case of low memory. A ROM with the fix does work. I'm using one of WildStang's and it's working great.
Moving apps to the SD card will help (not fix) the issue on 2.3 roms because the .lib files are now moved to the SD card from the /data/data folder (they weren't on 2.2).
Once you get close to the 150mb limit in the /data/data folder you will start seeing the notification (or a bunch of force closes on AOSP roms)
Also the app "not enough space" can alleviate the problem, or an automated cache cleaner.

You mentioned the bunch of force closes on AOSP roms, I had this problem a few times with MIUI and CM7 where out of nowhere it would force close everything and the phone was unusable. Is this related to cache? I read that it might be corrupted contacts that caused the issue.
Man, I can't figure it out this time. Had the DI for 18 months, and I've always been able to fix this - facebook, contacts, or just trace it back to the most recently installed app. This time I can't figure it out. It's so frustrating - 18 months ago and went ahead and spent the extra money to get (at the time) the most powerful phone I could find as far as memory, and got the 32g card to go with it, so I wouldn't have to worry about this. Now I've got plenty of memory, but my phone doesn't think so!
I'm scared to death to root. I'd love to start messing with ROMs, but I'm scared to brick it, I'd be screwed.

You should check out jermaine151's Stock+ version 2.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1260994. I can't personally vouch for it as he just released it and it's a little late to start reinstalling everything, but it looks promising.

I have been using it for about a week and no problems at all. Phone seems snappy and no annoying low space issue. It basically resizes the small partition to a bigger one. So no more low space notification.

My note 2's 2GB of RAM is ****ed up, some apps I don't know about them uses up all the RAM and it makes my phone ****ing slow. It's ****ing pissing me off.
It goes to 357MB then to 1.34GB.
Is there any way to fix this issue?

To fix your problem you're going to have to tell us some more about your phone and what you've done.
Is it rooted? If so, what rom and kernel are you running?
Did you try to simply reboot the phone? (Also a good idea to cold boot it, meaning to shut it off, remove the battery, put it back in and boot up).
It's doesn't help what so ever to force close apps that are not misbehaving. The Android system manages this perfectly fine. Only force close an app if there is something wrong with it.
What apps have you installed? Some of them might be taking up alot of RAM and running in the background.
I was nice to you, now please do the same to us.

I restart my phone couple of times if the number exceeded.
I have 39 apps downloaded from Google Play.
I was angry because it annoys crap out of me so pardon me.

Okay.
If your phone is running slowly and you're not rooted, then it is 99% sure an app problem.
It could be a hardware flaw in your phone, but my guess is app related (If your phone was as slow as it is now, when you got it, it is probably hardware related).
Try uninstalling any unneeded apps, like various tools you downloaded once to try it out, games you dont really play, etc etc.
Try to clear your cache. There are several apps out there that can do it (Some require root, and can clear more caches than non-root ones can, just try a non-root cache cleaner).
After doing that, do a cold boot as i refered to in my last post and see if it is better.
If not, try and go into Settings, Applications, Running Applications and see if there are any major apps that you installed yourself (not the ones that came with the phone) running and try to uninstall the ones taking up the most power, then do a cold boot again and see if it improved.
If nothing works, try and post a list of the apps you have installed on your phone that you installed yourself.

I don't think its hardware related. When I got first my Note 2 it was suprisingly fast. So it's probably the apps.
I've cleared all my caches, deleted a lot of unneeded apps and also done the cold boot after that I navigated to Settings>Applications manager> running apps.
I noticed samsung's keyboard took 55mb of ram, google service 20mb. maps 32mb. play store 10mb. settings 39mb 0_0. Those apps that came with the phone took a lot of ram. why is that? is there anyway to decrease the number?
You can use Titanium Backup to freeze or unintstall any apps that aren't needed by the OS. This will prevent them from ever starting up again.
Is the used up ram actually causing you problems? As I understand it android will make use of the ram to help switch apps quicker. So if its high its not a problem.

there are apps out there that tells you which apps uses the most cpu cycles. i can't recommend one as i don't use them, but might help you pinpoint your problem-app.

So you want more Ram han? Here is a very simple trick
Go to developer option
Select limit background processes and then select 4 processes...
You will see ram will fall below 1 gb

As far as I know, it makes my phone laggy when the number is high and the animation when you open a folder seems slow and also for notifications
I've had my 8 for several months but now it's starting to slow down. I have done everything except a factory reset (because thats just a pain in the ass) but it is still slow. Short of the reset does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I assume your battery drain is normal, or has not changed since the slowness has happened.
You have not stated if you rooted or custom ROM has been installed.
I found a few apps will do this time to time... depending on when they update. I always monitor my apps so troubling apps are always reverted back to their previous version.
You can use security 360 to monitor your tablet... It is a very good antivirus with some nice built in features. One is memory speed up and usage.
Basically it lets you know what apps are running in background, and releases them to speed up the tablet. I like it because it is like having 3 or 4 apps all into one and does not hog memory.
You can search the Q&A for battery drain if you have issues with battery as well ... there are many threads, so at least one will help. The lengthy threads have some good info near the end... as I try to help using simple methods that work with stock ROMs.

If not rooted, do so and you can eliminate apps that you don't use and that suck up RAM. You can as well move programs to an SD Card to increase the memory available.
Additionally, rooted or not you can go in and clean out the cache of all your apps. They build up over time.

Went to Best Buy and talked to the Samsung rep and he had the answer! First, get rid of SPB launcher then use Clean Sweep (in the store) to get rid of bloatware. Fast as Hell now! App only works on non-rooted I think. But it DOES work! Thanks for the help!

SPB launcher??? It must have been rooted. I have a mostly stock ROM... never had speed issues, but it is all in the choice of apps I install.
Given that many apps are developer driven, and from my experience with developers here on the forum, makes me cautious about installing apps. I install only what I need and does the job cleanly. Sometimes the best apps are buggy when being updated to run 4.4.x, as I seen that a lot since Xmas. Though May has been a good start for the year... many apps have been sorted out, but still iffy as there are thousands of apps to choose from.
I places a thread, and an answer to battery, and apps disabling in a simple and minimalistic method. If anyone is interested, they can search for posts by me... they are within this year.

You should not have needed to uninstall SPB unless you already had a whole bunch of apps. I have 200+ Apps with no issues.
Also Clean Sweep is a nice app, but you can do this already without the added app. Open you Google search, look at the bottom left hand tab, open it and you can do the same thing.

Nope. Not rooted and the launcher worked fine but apparently it slowed the system down. Now it's smokin'.
