pptp vpn - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok the HTC EVO has the pptp vpn built in under setings>wireless networks now i have it all set up and it connects but when ever i try to access network things it wont do it. as a mater a fact its not even routing any traffic. any ideas???

because it's broken. there are a lot of posts about it. depends on the vpn config. but basically some people can't get it to work at all. some people can get it to work w/o encryption (like me). but it basically just doesn't work. i've heard of some custom roms that have it working. but i think they're the exception.
i set up an ssh server and use connectbot. it's certainly not perfect. but it's better than nothing.
i think it's a problem with android. there's an epic long bug report/feature request begging google to fix it.

I wish that they would intra grate sslvpn on to the android devices now i got that to work but only under cynogenmod and honsetly I do not like that rom at all. Its a problem with the tun.ko driver and froyo making it not work. I havne figured out a work around yet.

Is there an application that could replace the Android VPN?

I have tried every VPN client in the marketed only one that works well if you have the tun.ko module compiled for your kernel. Now that's what I have to do but no idea how. Openvpn works on cynagamod 6 but not on stock rooted

Last I heard, CM6 doesn't even work with OpenVPN either, and good luck finding a tun.ko for it.

CM6 with a snap kernel. All snap kernels have tun.ko built in. Enjoy

Different strokes for different folks. There is no need to bash a dev's work and the people who follow it. A simple "I don't like it," works just fine. Personally, CM6 isn't my thing either, but it's like guys who like humongously huge women. I don't get it, but if that's what they like, then so be it.

WiFi tether

Hi I was just wondering what the best settings were for the WiFi tether app in my evo.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Have you actually gotten this to work? Are you using the one with the green wifi looking icon? I have gotten my laptop to connect, but not actually share the internet.
Ya i can connect but the internet is not working that's my problem also.

I read something, somewhere, that we may need to update or add a kernel. I'm not sure though.
I have had the same problem, all I done was download a different version of wifi tether, been working great

Thank you...not to be a pain, but once I download it to my computer, what do I do? I think it has something to do with pushing...but I am awful with loading things onto my phone.
If you Google wireless tether for Android from your phones browser, then click the downloads link for the project hosting on Google code, you can download straight to your phone. There are a bunch of different versions and not all will work with all kernels. After downloading, your phone will ask if you want to install.I'm using the pre8 version with netarchy's 4.1.8 kernel on fresh 3.1.0.1 and it works fine.

Wifi tether app on aosp?

Has anyone been able to get the wireless tether for root users app to work with aosp? The stock tethering *works,* but has very limited functionality. I emailed the dev and he told me to try the latest version, available here. http://tinyurl.com/bj9lyv
This has a lot of new features including a profile for our device, but it still doesn't work for me.
Has anyone had any luck with this?

what aosp are u using, i have all of them in the link in my sig and all the kernels. if you dl a wireless tether app on an aosp with built in free wifi tether then you will mess up the built in wifi tether and the app will not work or the built in will slow down. you would have to wipe everything and reflash it again. then try the built in wifi tether and it should work perfect. if you have any questions feel free to ask them in the link in my sig
The built in works, it just doesn't have the functionality of the wireless tether app. I really would like to have it working .. I haven't tried the above method actually, sorry haven't had time

WiFi Tether

I am not a noob but I am totally stumped. I have an Evo 4g rooted with CM7 and I cant tether.I have never had this issue. I have always been able to terther yet on my boost design and sprint evo I cant. It connects and everything as normal but just says no internet access and I am stuck.
My set up on CM7 is the wifi tether 3.1 beta 14
Device Profile Evo 4g and routing fix which has never failed. I have done the same setup on numerous evos and it always works flawlessly with the built in hack and or the app for rooted users. I am completely stumped and have tried unistalling. Using 4 different apps and nothing. Regardless the nuilt in hack should work yet it doesnt. Is there anyone else with this issue? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks alot for your time.
I have had this problem and I changed my kernal and it worked then.

+1 I havent changed the kernel myself. I have to wait. But I too also would like to know what kernel c.robb used.
I did a little testing. My ROM is SensuASOP 1.1. The kernels I've tried are Mason-G 0.15r4, 0.14, and Tiamat 4.1. On all of them my laptop will connect, but not get an IP. I would love to stay on an AOSP ROM, but I'm gonna have to reflash to Sense just so tethering works.

It always has worked for me on a Sense ROM, just not on AOSP; CM7, Deck's Reloaded, etc. I use tethering regularly at work, so I switched over to the Shooter Sense 3.0 ROM last night and updated the kernel to Underground 0.8. No problems with tethering there.
On AOSP, my devices will connect to the wifi but not get a DHCP address. Dummy me forgot to test using a static IP before I reflashed.
FIXED!!
I found out how to get Wifi Tether working on an AOSP ROM!
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=974&q=no IP address
Use the NexusOne Device-Profile, and the netd (master) Setup-Method. Tested and working on my Evo running Deck's Reloaded. :good:

Good Job! i appreciate your effort in getting that figured out.

OpenVPN?

Is there any way I can get openVPN support on the gNex (Specifically the Verizon one). Are there any mods or something out there? I can't seem to find any ROMs that support it.
EDIT: I know I tried out a ROM a while ago that supported it, but I can't seem to remember which one it was
Try search Openvpn settings and Openvpn installer on the market...

Nooooooo.... you don't even need root to use it anymore. This works so much better than the root alternatives, been using OpenVPN on my phones since I was using a nexus one. after trying pretty much every single possible solution, I found this one to be drastically more stable than anything else, plus you can use it on a totally stock phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDIxMiwiZGUuYmxpbmt0Lm9wZW52cG4iXQ..
The root solutions (even my my galaxy nexus) did weird things to my connection and overall stability of the phone itself, usually requiring a reboot to flush the DNS cache or whatever.
For the last month or so, I have been using l2tp/ipsec/psk instead, seems to be miles ahead of openvpn in terms of a "headache-free" experience. I was also suprised to find out that tmobile does not block l2tp/ipsec (at least for me anyways)...of course its also a giant pain in the rear to set up properly.
You need to install openvpn from market:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schaeuffelhut.android.openvpn
and the tun.ko modules (rooted device?):

[Q] Easytether not working on CM 10.1

I use a USB tether app called Easytether. It's my sole means of internet for my computer and it isn't working with CM. Can anybody help me get this working or explain why it won't work? I tried checking Tethering in the pull down menu but it stays off. Went in to settings to try to check it, still a no go. Uninstalled Easytether thinking maybe then I'd be able to enable tethering, no go. Reinstalled Easytether, tried it again, still no good. I don't have a wireless card for my desktop, so I really need this working.
This app worked flawlessly on stock and on non-AOSP ROMs.
its most likely because asop has different drivers then the stock roms so it prob doesnt support those drivers yet. try going on the irc and see if they might be able to do anything about it.
I haven't used that particular app, or CM on this phone, so I can't offer any ideas as to why it's not working for you. I would recommend WiFi Tether for Root Users from the Play Store. I've never had a problem with it...

I don't have a wireless card. This app ran me a one time fee of $10 as well, so I'd like to get it working again haha.
So you need to tether via usb. Gotcha. I had that working a while back, lemme check a few things out & I'll let you know if I figure out a working solution.

I've been talking with Shelnutt2 and Artlan, they're trying to get it resolved. The built in tethering for CM 10.1 isn't working on the LS970 currently either. I'm sure they'll have it resolved shortly.
PDANet seems to be working for me via usb, so you could always try that out. No guarantees it will work on Cm (I'm running lifeless), but I don't see why it wouldn't.

Easytether worked for me on Lifeless as well, but we're going from stock based ROMs to AOSP. I'm still having issues getting this running. Going to check in IRC and see if the Devs can help. Built in tethering on CM also isn't working for me.
