I am on a rooted Froyo EVO. I had installed a transparent Google Search widget. The search button worked perfectly. The Big G issued an update to the Google Search app, and it was failing to install. I used Titanium Backup to uninstall my custom widget/app, and I was then able to install the new goodness from Google. Everything was great until I tried to press the Search key. It no longer works. So I checked my /system/usr/keylayout/supersonic-keypad.kl file, and everything looks like the default (I did a diff between my file and a stock file I found on here). At this point I am baffled. Any suggestions?
*To be clear, the short tap is broken - not the long tap*
Hmm mine isn't working at all now that I try to use it
Logie, did you have a custom search widget installed before the update, or was it the stock widget?
Mine doesnt work either. Not that I use it though.

You need to do a little bit of cp magic. I had this problem a while back, and this worked for me:
adb shell cp /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1.apk /system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk

When I hold down the search button it brings up voice commands but a quick tap does nothing...this bugs me because I hide a lot of my apps with launcher pro and access them with Google search. I tried to flash a fix but it didn't work...I found a few threads on how to fix it but my sdk is being a real jerk and not letting me into adb shell...does anyone have the exact code to fix it in terminal emulator? Any help would be greatly appreciated...TIA guys.

Have you tried the CapacitiveButtons zip in Calkulin's ROM thread? It is in the first post. He disables it in his ROM and that zip fixes it.

How did you fix it?
Im running fresh's Newest rom, and i flashed a file that deleted a ton of stuff on the phone. Didnt nandroid backup, and it deleted the com.android.googlesearchbox.apk.
Now short press on the search button deos nothing.
No fixes seem to work either.

I reflashed rom and reflashed caulks default capacitive search button zip. You may need to get that Google searchbox.apk back before anything will work though.
Open your mind, Quaid.
I'm sure you guys have noticed that Hulu claims our platform isn't supported. I was wondering if anyone has tried this technique yet to get Hulu to believe the flash player is installed on a windows box? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794512
I haven't tried it yet, but I know by default I cannot uninstall the Flash 10.1 build that was included on the phone in order to install the fixed apk...
I pretty much decided that since HSPA+ doesn't cover the WHOLE of my city yet then I won't bother with data heavy sites like Hulu on my phone for now.

hence the need for a flash build that reports itself as a desktop. The browser will report as a desktop if you do the debug trick, but flash itself is still reporting itself as an android phone.
The link I posted at the top had an apk with a custom build of flash that reports as a desktop, but I can't get it to install on my phone.

what i tried. used temp root, then got root in adb shell. rm system flash player, then cp new flash to system/app. installed hulu.apk, still same not supported error. also did the about:debug, same prob
whats wierd is after i rm flash, it still shows under manage apps. can it be installed somewhere else as well?
also how could i rm the cache of the stock player?

instead of removing flash using adb, maybe try using Titanium? Sounded like some people on other phones had success that way. I haven't messed around with temp root yet so I can't try it myself.

sure. its a little tricky, lol. read entire first post here, temp root, its been updated: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797042
as you read you only do stage 1 once (not needed if you have done temp root already)
then before you do stage 2, open titanium, it will say it doesnt have root, thats ok, exit out of it.
complete stage 2, do NOT exit term (sometimes it works if you do, most time not)
long press home to bring up recent apps. click on titanum. most likely will say no root, thats ok.
hit menu and reload titanum, boom superuser request. grant it and your in there for this session!
good luck, have fun, hope this helps...
Thanks man I'll try when I get home.

Try installing terminal emulator, then typing the following inbterminal emulator.
Su
Chmod 666 /data/data/com.Android.contacts/files/*
Reboot
And see if that helps.

If im not wrong its supposed to be:-
su
chmod 666 /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files/*
Hope that helps!
you should use lower case letters, cause it matters int that case (so like 'chmod').

Update broke Market and all of my third-party keyboards (pretty much everything I had to manually put in system/app. Root, however, was not broken.
For good measure, though, I reverted to stock and re-rooted. Re-installed Market and G-Apps framework. No cigar. Market and keyboards are still broken and FC on launch.

Did you use Titanium Backup to convert Market and Keyboards to system apps? Alternatively move them (from /data) into /system/app and set the appropriate permissions/ownership.

Since the update, I'm getting constant force closes from market when installing apps/opening market. Worked before. Anyone got an idea?
I uninstalled and removed vending.apk from system/apps, I reinstalled it, ensured permissions were solid. Clear data/cache just to be safe.
SuperOneClick/ZergRush confirmed working over here as a re-root method. Market and G-apps confirmed working after re-install, fixing permissions (via root explorer for me) and restarting.

I do recall in terminal emulator I used to be able to "su" and then "reboot recovery", straight to recovery I would go. Maybe my memory is foggy and perhaps it was my nexus one and G2 that did it and not this phone. I think at one point it worked on this device, now It just returns "sh: reboot: not found" . Was this perhaps something that changed from GB/ICS? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks

Nope it works great. I just checked it on my ICS build
In order for it it work there has to be the reboot binary in sbin and xbin. If reboot isn't working in terminal check those direcotories and make sure there is a reboot. If it isn't there. Find a ROM that has it and copy the file into both directories and set permissions. Not sure right off what the permissions are but look at the permissions of a file already in there and set the new file to the same.
cool thanks for the info. ill look and see but if memory serves me correct it hasn't worked on any custom ics that ive ran yet. i still cant remember if blazer on GB did it or not.

It is something being removed, rather than added, as it works in stock ICS (and GB) using the ODIN OneClicks.

cool thanks for the heads up mr. hub. just throwing this out there but i can recall a time back when i would flash most custom roms there was a t.emu that showed in sayyy titanium backup but couldnt be run. i would generally download a 2nd t.emu from the play store like the one in the pic and the reboot commands worked. im currently on frankenstein ego rom and upon fresh flash there is no t.emu showing in titanium backup. Like previous times i just grabbed it from play store and it was a "no go". could that be the issue of what is being taken away?
just wanted to throw this pic up because this is deff different than the "root" response i used to get.

Do this..
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 /system
ln -s /sbin/recovery /system/bin/reboot
mount -o remount,ro /system
reboot recovery
Or something like that..

thanks chris, that did it. anybody have any thoughts on that 2nd pic i posted? with the "whoami" it used to always return "root" up until about the same time i noticed the reboot issue. i guess that one confuses me because i tuped "su" and the superuser allow/deny popped up and i clicked allow as isual. so with knowing that it seems odd to me that "whoami" returns "unknown". is that the same issue that was stopping the reboot command? sorry guys, i know its not real important it just helps me understand a little better about how things work.
