Root before activation? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to do a search for this but couldn't find an answer specific to the EVO. My friend just received an EVO, can I root before he activates the device? I don't see it being a problem but just wanted to make sure. TIA.

Yup. I just did the same thing. The only thing you need to remember is that if it is using any internet sites (I had to use a Java site) you'll need to turn your wifi on.

sounds good. thanks for your reply.

[Q] can't find sprint hotspot app??

I'm really not a noob, but for the life of me, I can't find the sprint hotspot app on my phone. I've never used it before, but signed up for the wifi hotspot feature. Saw in settings wireless how to activate sharing via usb or bluetooth, but for the life of me, I can't find this app to share data over wifi. Am I missing something?

I'm on stock, not rooted. Didn't feel the need to root this phone. That's why I'm stumped not to find it. It's not a hidden app nor has it been disabled in the app manager.

I found it by doing a google search. It's there, but I can't find it in my app drawer nor can I add it to one of my home screens. Really weird. It works though when I do find it via google search and then turn it on. Still very weird. Thx

Very weird, but holding off doing a factory reset. It takes me days to get my phone back in order after a reset and I have a business trip starting on Friday.

Just a suggestion but if you root your phone which is not very difficult you can get wifi hotspot for free. I dont understand why we should pay for something that already comes with our phones.
I know I can, but I've rooted previous phones--HTC Hero and the Samsung Epic 4G. I had many issues with the Epic 4G after root that I didn't have before rooting. I like to play with the phones, but I don't like things going wrong. I don't have as much time to tinker with them to get them to work right. I could spend a whole weekend doing nothing but root and reflash different roms. Was fun, but a time suck!

Sprint - Wifi Tethering Working!

Guys, I don't know what happened but it's working on my Sprint G2. Someone help me figure out what I did. All I did just a min ago was enable it, got the error, then enabled it again. Bam, i'm connected. HOW? I played with some build.prop settings and something over in SQLite editor in com.providers.settings I think it was. The other thing, i'm stuck in 1X coverage. Maybe the entitlement check thing is trying and gives up before it gets a response, then just goes through?

Stock rooted. I played with build.prop and sqlite stuff last week but it didn't work. On a whim I just tried it and it's working.

I got mine to work too after editing that file with Sqlite, but it only worked once and with the built-in tethering. I couldn't get it to work correctly again after turning it off and on.

Hmmm, mine gives the error once or twice, then just starts working. I'm posting tethered right now. I managed to get it onto ehrpd and speed are pretty solid. I need to get my directional antenna hooked up to my Cell Booster so I can pick up the ecsrb tower instead of the halfass tower i'm on now!
EDIT: Of course I make this post and it stops working, lol. No idea why outta nowhere it works. It almost tells me it's using some kind of http authentication and if it can't connect it goes ahead and lets you use it.
EDIT2: After a reboot it works again. WTF is with this thing!
Ive been following threads on getting tethering for sprint working and I dont understand why we just dont keep it to one thread. Also, Im not sure anyone can figure out whats going on with how you got it working if you dont post the changes and edits you made to the files in detail. It might help more if others knew exactly what you did.

Can you post the lines you changed and the detail steps on what you do? What files did you modify in the android filesystem? I am sure this can be done easily but we need more description. The more information you can tell us how to replicate your situation, the better it is that we all can try this solution out and hammer out the kinks so that we get a working wifi tether for Sprint version.

Could be you are onto something, but until you provide that info it doesnt help you or anyone else figure it out.
Have you tried connecting wifi tether while data off or in airplane mode?
Maybe it's checking with Sprint before tethering. I dunno anything about this stuff. Just speculating.
Thanks for your work on this man.

Basically Sprint wifi tethering still doesn't work. There is no proof that it is working because we don't even know the method the OP used.

The OP doesn't even know what method he used, what a Jackass. Sorry guys, major software upgrade at work, been swampzilla'd. I know there's something else in sqlite editor, but it's not working. The best luck I had was when the phone was in 1x, then would switch to eHrpd after tethering was enabled. Build.prop and screenshot of what I added to settings.db\global in sqlite.
Ok, so we just dump a couple files and say have at it?
Dude.... step -by-step.... what EXACTLY did you edit and what changes did you make??
How many times do we need to ask the same question?
If you seriously dont know then say so and have a mod delete this thread cause right now its nonsense.

Seriously. If the OP cannot easily explain the changes he made to which file step by step then the mods should delete this thread to avoid confusion.
Yep you guys are right. Close the thread. Works if I launch hotspot from 1x coverage, then it stays on. Sorry I can't be of more help, but the last line in sqlite editor and the obvious "tether" lines that are easily searchable in build.prop.txt

T-Mobile Note 3 on ATT APN problem

I have been using a SM-N900T on the ATT network by changing the APN settings, and it has been working perfectly until today. I have no internet connection, but it shows full bars, and I can still call and text. I've tried restoring to a earlier NANDROID, and even went to an ATT store and had the guy (who happened to know exactly what I did and has done it himself for his phone) try to fix it, but nothing has worked.
I posted this in the AT&T section too, but no luck so far. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Had same issue when the tower had maintenance going on. Next time this happens, call att and ask if anything going on near you.

Same here both with AT&T and T-Mobile. All you need to do is call nearest store and ask if they're experiencing network problems.

Sprint LG G2 Tether/usb Not WIFI

Hi all just got a Sprint LG G2 and was bummed. Had Clockworkmod tether on my old HTC Design. It was not listed at play store. When to Clocks site and saw the LG LS980 listed. Used in 02/2014....thought hmmm, whats the worst that could happen? Delete it if it doesn't work ? Glad to say it worked fine and it does have Kitkat. Understand this is not a WIFI tether(as I'm sure you all know) but they will once again get my money. Hope this helps someone out
Not sure how CW works, but for another option Easy Tether works for USB and also bluetooth for tablet. My understanding is neither need root.

Easy tether has worked for me and my friends on many different phones and many not rooted. Just curious, did you follow the setup guide and also install the pc or tablet app to go along with it? Have to make sure the pc or tablet app is running along with the phone app.

Mobile Hotspot ?

Sorry if this is a noob question but is there a known way to get hotspot provisioning turned off for Note 4 Dev Ed? Thanks in advance!
What exactly are you asking?
I would like to use the mobile hotspot for free with my unlimited data
As far as I know it's unlocked. They no longer can charge for it. It's built in. I have used it. But I am not on unlimited data. If you can't use the pre-installed app then download on from the playstore.

Have been unable to connect since last night. It appears Verizon rolled out a silent update disabling it on multiple devices. Read the most recent FoxFi reviews in the Play Store for several other accounts of this. Anyone else know of a solution?

Verizon threw in a silent update last night. All of us unlimited data users got screwed. If you look at the reviews for the app, everyone from our carrier is having the same problem. I've been looking for another app to change to that will do that same thing. No luck so far. Sucks, since I've been using Foxfi for years and it always worked like a champ.
