Hi all, lurker turned poster here. I've been looking around but i can't seem to find a straight answer to this.
If i were to go through the process of doing full root and NAND unlock, to install a custom ROM and test, can i return to a true "stock" setup, specifically re-locked NAND so that my EVO can be returned under warranty? I know that RUU returns me to stock kernel and ROM, but I can't find anything about the NAND. I'd prefer not to go any further with testing any custom ROMs without knowing that I can return my EVO. Thanks in advance!
Yes flashing thee stock rru and you are back to stock.our just install the latest update and presto no more root or nand.
Ifly
EVO fully rooted fresh
First, I understand this is a total noob question... and I'm SURE the answer is here somewhere, but I'm having a rough time digging through all these threads to find exactly what I'm looking for.
I rooted my Evo with unrEVOked3. This is an original Evo from release day.
Android 2.2 - 3.29.651.5 stock rom.
Supersonic EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.97.0000
I would like the latest update but obviously cannot install it with root.
From what I have gathered reading through all of these threads is that I need to backup with Titanium 1st. I have tried installing this and it says it could not aquire root privileges.
Do I need to have busybox installed 1st?
Where do I go from here?
I am trying to get my phone back to stock but keep my apps and settings..
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
1st of all TB won't work on stock you need su privileges. Also you need to be on a rooted rom & use the problems button in the bottom right of TB to install busybox. I suggest using mybackup pro if you plan to go back to stock unroot
Flash a rooted 3.70 rom..
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
Do I need to backup 1st with Titanuim?
This is what you need to do.

I followed directions in above link and didn't lose any data. You can do a nandroid and TB backups just in case.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I only rooted with unrevoked3.. should I run unrevoked forever also?
That's what I did. Read up on it if you have questions.
Well... I finally did it. Thank you everyone for your help.
It's definately not rocket science, but for someone who does not have a lot of experience with this, the thought of possibly bricking your phone can cause some anxiety.
I ended up backing up the things that I wanted to save with Titanuim Backup. Then I installed the rooted ROM and radio updates located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
For those of you that are new to this.. Once you download these, you need to rename the zip files to "update" and place them on the root of your SD card. (do these one at a time and I installed the ROM 1st) Then shut down your phone and turn it back on with the "volume-down" key pressed.
I did notice that after restoring some things with Titanuim, that it took a couple resets for certain items to restore. (eg. previous text messages)
After I use "two steps to unroot evo" do I need to flash a stock rom? I'm a bit confused. Thanks in advance for the help.
PS I've been flashing a couple times a week since release date. Today I got out of the car and dropped my evo, shattering the screen . Should I just declare the evo stolen and pay 100 or will they fix the screen for free?
you can unroot fairly easily. just flash the unrevoked s-on tool from recovery (which i assume you have done) and then run a stock pc36img.zip. this will totally unroot you. nothing else to do. if you need links to something just ask.
Hello all, after reading todays news about HTC giving up efforts to update the desire, I have decided to update on my own.
The trouble is, my desire is a POS. I am not able to do the unrevoked way because my desire will just go into a reboot loop.
Is there an alternate way of doing it?
I assume that I must be rooted to get this firmware on?
Do I really need this s-off thing? I do not plan to stay rooted. Once i load the new firmware i will unroot.
Thank.
Ok, firstly POS? Secondly, what firmware?
When your rooted you can't simply just unroot. To unroot you have to flash an RUU, which in turn wipes all the data off your phone and updates everything back to manufacturer stock. I don't see what your trying to achieve here.
I am only rooting to get the new ruu. So, I assume that it will then be unrooted no?
POS is piece of sh..
I have the stock 2.2 fm.
You don't need to root to use an RUU. You can happily flash an RUU all day. The current RUU is Android 2.2, software number 2.49.405.5.
Hi Everyone
I've just received my Desire back from HTC repair. They've put the original Orange RUU back on my phone, so before I root and start flashing roms again, I'm wondering if there's a way I can extract the Orange rom so people here can use it if they have to return their phone under warranty?
I'm a complete beginner at this stuff though, so if someone wants to help out you'll have to talk me through it step by step!
Someone posted a nandroid backup of the Orange rom. It's an old version but still. I don't see the point though because the WWE RUU from HTC is more up to date anyway. You can post your nandroid backup though.
I know the WWE is more up to date, I'm just thinking an actual Orange RUU would be useful for people who need to return their phone to "out of the box" state if they need to unroot and return their phone.
About 2 weeks ago I needed an Orange UK ruu but had to take my chances with the stock WWE rom, luckily I got away with it but if there's a way we can somehow extract one then that'd be helpful for anyone in the same position.

^ Exactly!
Hold out hope, give it a couple of days and maybe someone else will know what to do.
In the mean time, root your phone and S-OFF (I think you need to S-OFF to create a NAND backup) when you root, flash the RA-recovery 2.0.1 as that can do NAND backups whereas the CWM that comes with unrevoked doesn't.
I would love a Orange UK RUU. I can't find any on the internet so definitely try and get it

Just a quick question before I do that, I thought that if I root then all I'd be able to create is a backup of a rooted rom? Which wouldn't be any good for returning to "out of box state"? Remember, I'm 100% Noob so I may be wrong!
Also, what gets backed up when I do a nand? Shall I perform a factory reset first and then do it? Don't want any of my apps, email, ebay or google account backed up and passed on to everyone who uses my backup! I'm willing to give back to the community but I ain't that generous!

I'm entirely unsure. I think there's a way to unroot afterwards for anyone who uses your backup, and I think, yes, it'd be best to do a factory reset before the NAND (can use titanium for your own backup, though, so you can reinstall after the NAND and be back where you were)
Okay...
I used unrevoked to root. Performed a factory reset. Made up a fake google account so I could download rom manager, installed clockwork mod and created a Nand backup from there.
It's 448 MB in size, is that normal? Seems pretty large! In the backup folder there's something called sd-ext.img that is 130mb and another called data.img at 21mb, will that have saved information about my device or apps? Can I delete them or will that cause problems for anyone using my Nand to restore?
All I'm basically asking is, is my personal info, contacts, photos, sms, emails etc safely clear?
If all is good to go does anyone know a good place to upload and host for others to easily download it from? And do I need to upload the whole folder or is there just one specific img that people need?
Edit: Do I need to upload the whole folder or is there just one specific img file that people need?
You're not going to believe this... It's started boot-looping again!
I performed the Nandroid backup, rebooted, it stuck on the HTC logo, I removed the battery to get the SD card out so I could extract the Nand backup, put the battery back in and now can't get any further than HTC logo before it restarts and gets stuck on HTC logo over and over again!
What have I done wrong now? I'm not having much luck with this!
Edit: Had a quick read and found this was quite common when combining unrevoked and rom manager for backups. I restored from the backup I just made and all is working again now, I hope!
ahhh you could've gone 1 step further and posted an unrooted ROM!
you should've S-OFF'd with AlpharevX without setting up the entire phone etc. then made a nand backup of the unrooted ROM. Ahh well lol, I'm on Vodafone anway

Damn! If only you'd told me that a few hours earlier!
Well, it's too late now, I've already rooted. Is there a way to unroot and then create another backup?
Can anyone tell me which of the files in the backup I need to upload please? Do I need to upload all of them or can I delete sd-ext.img and data.img?
Or if there's a way to unroot and create a backup of an unrooted rom then let me know how to do it please!
