Anyone else have the new CDMA version of the HTC Desire? I've had mine for a couple of days, and love it. I have noticed that this version seems to lack the FM radio that the GSM version came with.
Also, the CDMA version came with "Android 2.1 update 1" and has 720p video recording enabled.
Has anyone else noticed differences? Thoughts, etc?
Does yours take sim cards?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
cdma does not use sim cards, the uSCC desiire lacks FM radio and 256 mb of ram the GSm users have.

Just checked the specs from the htc site on the us cellular version. It only has 384 MB ram. CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was gonna get this phone when it comes to cellular south which will be the same CDMA version. I guess I may have to wait on the galaxy s that cell south will be getting.
I dunno. my us cell desire says it has 295mb of ram free right now in advanced task killer. good bit of stuff running too. maybe it does only have 384, but i would think i would have a lot less free than that considering my droid 1 was almost always at 15-20mb free with 256mb. and that was a vanilla rom. no htc sense.
I think it could be a typo on htc site.

That would be great if it was a typo. I just watched a youtube video on US celluar version and he said 512 ram. I really want this phone b/c the galaxy s that is coming out is just a little to big of a phone to me.
purezero: what does it say on your box?
if you watch this video you can see the box and it says 576mb ram which is what i thought it was gonna have.

Absolutely not. In fact it is the fastest stock android device I have ever used. And I have had or used almost all of the decent ones.
Just returned my Galaxy s (captivate) to att and switched to USCC last week to get the desire (way better service here).
Desire flat out kicks the galaxy's ass in everything except display. However, its still a very good display.
Not to mention I prefer the desires size a little more. Just a great phone.
ONLY bad thing about it is there wont be any damn developer support being on a small carrier.

Never thought to look there. haha.. It says 512 rom and 576 ram right on the back of the box
Glad to here that. Especially helps hearing this from someone who has used both the desire and galaxy s. The size is a big thing for me. The galaxy i think is just too big for me.
Awesome!!!! Now if Cellular south would just hurry up and release the thing.
Thanks purezero
Yes, I got the phone back on Friday. Love it. it has 512MB ROM and 576MB RAM. I'm on the phone waiting to speak with a USCC engineer for more info on potential 2.2 Froyo update. *fingers crossed*
I will also continue looking on the forums here. If anyone knows a thread that would be helpful in this and shorten my search, I would appreciate it. 1st post on the forums here. forums look like they have good potential for me.
Cheers!
Just got this as well.. LOVE IT!I can't do anything to slow it down and now that uscc has 3g roaming on vz and sprint, it is SICK. Now hopefully it can be rooted and custom roms will come out for it soon..
i just confirmed with the u s cellular engineer. we are going to get 2.2... however it's going to be at least a month before we see anything, most likely two. The good news is at least we now know It's coming.
BTW, i'm using the desire right now to turn my speech into text. it does a pretty good job, i only have to correct it once in a while.

Basically, do I get the Desire now and install Froyo when it's out, or do I wait for hardware designed to work with Froyo? Is the hardware in the Desire beefy enough?
+1 on that, i am on the same situation.
The Desire copes well with 2.1, it'll be plenty enough for Froyo. What might be a point to hold off from getting one now is the rather lacking availability in certain parts of the world right now. Plus, the Desire might come down a frew quid in price once the Supersonic and other 4G phones hit the market.
2.2 is designed for this current generation so yeah it's beefy enough, only problem is if you get an HTC handset, it will take longer to get 2.2 than a nexus one because HTC has to modify it.
If you have no problem with installing "unofficial" updates, you can get the Desire now and xda-developers will bring you the Froyo
If you don't want to do that, then the decision will be a tough one...

Of course... it just won't be an official release... that bothers some people... but I really like using the more customised roms xda developers release
Also... the Desire has a couple of benefits over the Nexus One... better screen (touch wise) + I prefer the hard buttons to the soft buttons on the N1
So sure you'll be waiting a little longer for a rom release... but you'll have a (slightly) nicer phone to use...

The Supersonic is the HTC Evo, but it and other 4G phones won't affect the price of the Desire because:
a) It is a CDMA device, so it's essentially a US only device.
b) It uses WiMAX for 4G - I don't expect any European cellular operators will use WiMAX for their 4G networks, they will use LTE. As far as I'm aware, the only European WiMAX deployments are for wireless internet solutions.
c) Since you use the term quid, I assume you are in the UK - currently none of the networks have given any firm dates for rolling out 4G networks. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we're looking at 2012+.

Dave

The Desire is a new phone and will easily handle Froyo. It's a great phone and I would recommend it 100% now. What's the point of waiting, the hardware is excellent and will remain so for a while. Buy it now and enjoy!

To my knowledge, 4G will not be widely available in Europe until 2011 or 2012.
@Vlad You can hold out till then if you want , but it depends on when 4G is gonna be available in your country.
Hi @ all
I know it wont be a 100% reliable news but I thought it would interest some of you.
A friend of mine ordered a HTC Desire at Sunrise (Swiss Operator). She was told that the delivery will be postponed to the beginning of August due to the fact that the device will be delivered with version 2.2 of Android aka Froyo.
That would mean that we could possibly get the official Froyo by the end of July for unbranded devices.
Hope the staff at Sunrise is reliable and the info is right!!!
We will know more in about one month.
Sorry if the news has already been posted before.

Interesting
Well, HTC Customer Service reps got the date wrong for this. So I doubt that a network service provider rep has that much information.
I have a feeling your friend couldn't get a Desire because of the same problem that the Droid Incredible is facing. HTC has a shortage of AMOLED screens.
See here. http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/veri...le-shortage-due-to-amoled-production-shortage
Also, see here for a (probably) more realistic time table direct from HTC PR guy. http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-says-expect-froyo-version-sense-ui-christmas

Thanks für your reply.
I am aware of the shortage of AMOLED displays and the recent PR statement of HTC. I dont pretend my info is right, only wanted to share what I heard. Nevertheless I think August could be possible. The PR guy said that all newer devices (Desire, Legend, etc.) will get Froyo by Christmas. The HTC Desire being their top end device at the moment in Europe I assume it will get the update first. And I am quite sure that they wont provide the update to all devices at the same time. So lets hope for it to be true .

There's no timetable there at all - it just says that they'll be finished with Froyo updates before Xmas. Well, August is before Xmas, as is September, October, November and most of December!
What we do know is that HTC have gone on record to say that they are expecting the first updates to roll out in Q3, but we don't know which devices will get it first.

Dave

Lets hope it's true and the Desire gets 2.2 in August before the other phones, but i must admit that 2.1 is great and i have no issues with it so am happy to wait whenever it comes out.
It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect. I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas.

I think this is cos they want to prevent what happened with the 2.1 Update for the HTC Hero (more than a half year between announcement and shipment, at least in europe).
Better to make promises they can hold. So the Christmas announcement makes completly sense to me.

But as far as roms are concerned, I see it is not worth using them since simple stuff such as video recording do not work.

The only thing they have said is that they will be done BEFORE Christmas, that could be any time not precisely Christmas, it just gives them a window to allow for things to go wrong.
Another hint the update is not far of (statement from Eric Lin, global PR and online community Manager of HTC):
"I don't think you're going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it's a less severe change. Switching from 2.1 to 2.2, they made a lot of tweaks, but they didn't make any gigantic changes, so it should be a much swifter process".

Is there any possible way to get a forum for the CDMA Desire? I just switched from Verizon to US Cellular and this its driving me insane. The Mesmerize has it's own forum and that's not as important as this. At least the Fascinate and Mesmerize are both CDMA. Please I'd even be willing to do the work to help make it. And before anybody here decides to say something stupid like just get a Mesmerize, if that's what I wanted I would have. Keep those comments to yourself. I had a Fascinate, I wanted to go back to HTC.

If there's a forum for each of the samsung galaxy S phones, those are the same phones just on different networks right? correct me if im wrong. That being the case, im sure there can be a BravoC forum. Everyday it feels like im looking at a forum for a phone i don't own. Which is half true.
I'm in a quandary and I wanted to find out where people are going after the Desire. For me it is pretty much the perfect phone, this is down to build quality and developer support.
I don't know if i can move to a phone that doesn't have as much support, what will i do without all my flashing?!
Anyway, the SGSII is plastic and the Sensation isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination (it isn't the 'new Desire' in terms of changing the game).

What's the lead time on that? Are we expecting it this year? That will also depend on manufacturer for me too... can't deal with plastic phones!
This might be some sort of sacrilege but I would to see an Android device with the same design ethos as the iPhone 4.
HTC Sensation looks closest but I'm done with Sense.
Galaxy S2 would edge it for me at the moment though.

Hi All,
I have the chance to get a Sensation tomorrow for free
I currently use the DHD and think the phone is awesome. Has anyone here had experience with both? I just wondered if the Sensation actually compares to the DHD or if it has any problems etc.
The main thing I can see immediately is the Sensation still doesn't have full root where as my DHD has boot unlocked and full root access so I swap my roms around quite often. Hopefully this will come soon to the sensation.
Anyway, if people who have already defected or played with both could let me know whether I'll feel impressed if I do get the Sensation please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks!
never mind,... only searched the DHD forums... just found this on the sensation forums.
same question sorry!

I think you should go for sensation as i dont think its gonna take too long for the developers on xda to root it. hope for the best
Moreover its better to have latest hardware to be future proof as the mobile hardware is improving drastically with cellphones having dual core processors and 1gb ram
For free? Seriously? Then why you're still asking this question? Just go for it already. You're the 2nd person i've met who gets sensation for free.

Thanks for the replies everyone even though this is a double post
Sounds fairly unanimous to me, guess I'll have to pick it up
sensation definitely
I wouldn't go for the Sensation just yet, because I don't see any direct benefits from it, except for the higher resolution screen and the dual-core CPU. It is even a downgrade in some terms, since it's flash memory is smaller than DHD's. 1080p recording isn't a big of a deal, since the camera quality is just as bad as with all the other HTC devices. If you are after the fancy Sense 3.0 stuff, you can have it on your DHD with custom ROMs already. Plus, the high res is relatively new and there are still apps on the market you will have issues with. Thus, I would wait (and I will ) for the next flagship device, when the high res stuff is well established and there are no compatibility issues etc.
BUT, if you can get it for free and can live without root for some time, it's a different story, of course. Since its value is higher than that of DHD, I would probably go for it, but only to sell it later and get the next, proper flagship device
Funnily enough svyat that was my initial thought on the matter but you seem fairly certain this won't be HTC's flagship device. I don't really follow this stuff as much as I used to, do you know something I don't?? Do HTC have something else hidden away that they are going to sneak out anytime soon?
Cheers.

Flagship phones only remain so for around 6 months, so continually clamouring after the latest-and-greatest is futile. If your Sensation is 'free' on a new 18/24 month contract, I'd be inclined to wait and see what HTC announce in the next couple of months...

It definitely is their current flagship device.

Not really, but eventually there will be another flagship device anyway.

Wrong. I need to have the best flagship device at all times

+1. My criteria for a device is a) Android, b) good spec, c) "supported" by xda-developers
For the last point, read ROMs and the knowledge base.
All the same, if anyone wants to give me a Sensation, I won't refuse
Well... ok, maybe I should qualify my statement.
Continually clamouring after the latest-and-greatest is futile if you haven't got pocket-loads of disposable income. If you have, then go for it....
Since getting married and having children, such care-free days of unbridled tech-spending are long gone....
senstation is faster
sensation in better
Listen it's already confirmed Att will be releasing the htc holiday across the seas. It's estimated the name here in the us would be the Inspire HD. Jus like the mytouch series and the vibrant series. This phone is expected to be packed and quad core probably with the latest dual core chipset by the time it's released, be the best an latest. Wait till the htc holiday, it will be out this year around the 4th quarter of the year.

You can also sell your current device and use the proceeds to buy the next best thing.
