I'm curious if others are seeing their EVO reboot with random use. It doesn't seem to be related to one specific application although it is hard to say if a background app is the cause. I will be using navigation or an Internet-based app, then the screen goes black and the phone reboots.
I originally thought it was due to rooting, but I'm seeing it on different ROMs. I've wiped the cache and data when flashing the new ROMs and I've tried running with limited apps loaded with my recent move to the OMJ ROM. Everything actually runs great with the exception of the reboots.
I'm posting the issue here since it doesn't seem to be ROM specific and I'm curious if it may be hardware related. Is there a tool that would allow me to easily catch a log of the potential error to seek further help? A point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I'm running stock 2.2 no root, and with gps on my phone reboots in the middle of 911 calls. (Thank God I wasn't calling about an immediate emergency) but it happened twice, once when I called and the other when they called me back. After turning off GPS, it worked fine. I thought this was a bug in 2.1 before update1, I didn't receive the problem until the 2.2 update.
adb logcat might see an error, but I'm not really sure.
Seeing it here. Not Rom or application specific.
try a factory reset.
That's scary news about the reboots during 911 calls. I can't say that I tested that as a trigger for the reboot and I hope I don't have to in the near future. However, it makes me curious if it is related to the phone's interaction with the Sprint network. In your case your 911 call may have been a direct trigger whereas my reboots are seem indirect while I'm using my data plan.
One reason for my reboot was due to me getting the Error Code 67 "Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect" when trying to tether (USB or hotspot). Rooting allowed me to tether using 3rd party apps, but there may be the underlying problem with my account.
I also should have mentioned that the reboots happen with GPS on as well as off. I typically have it off to save battery life. I've also done factory resets each time I've changed or updated my ROM.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions so far. I'll try logcat and continue to monitor the forum for advice. I'll also post back any answers I may find elsewhere.
Thanks again.
I had a reboot tonite, phone was just sitting on table off charger about 90% battery, and I heard the Sprint screen come on looked down and noticed phone was booting up....no idea why first time I've noticed this.
Stock froyo no root...unfortunately :'(

Correction... I meant to say that the reason I rooted (not rebooted) was to get tethering without running into the Error Code 67. I tried the various solutions posted for the Error Code 67, but nothing seemed to work. But I'm curious if this may be part of the underlying issue if my device reboots based on a faulty account configuration when using some aspect of the Sprint network.

The exact same thing happened to me last night. I sent a text, switched to my GMail and then boom. Error message about failure to send an SMS then reboot. Stock unrooted FroYo.
I had reboots only when using Undervolted kernels.
Seemed to be triggered by GPS + Phone call.
Yes, I was also having this problem. Definitely GPS related. Usually it would happen only if I was using the GPS for a long amount of time (navigating) - so I imagine it may be conflicting with cellular data if I received a txt while navigating or something. Who knows.
It was driving me crazy because A. I got lost and B. It started rebooting constantly and would randomly get caught in a boot-loop. I even had the problem after wiping EVERYTHING (even my SD) and reinstalling various ROMs (I tried 5 different ones).
The only solution I found in the end was to find the latest radio and wimax updates, wipe, re-install those - and then install the ROM again.
GPS may be a symptom, but not a cause for me since I typically have GPS off. I find that it typically happens when I'm using a networked based app, like the web browser. Following your post I turned on the GPS, started the navigation app and found that my EVO rebooted after the same amount of time I was experiencing with GPS off.
The more I think about it, it does feel like I just assume that it will reboot after a certain amount of time passes (regardless of app). GPS and Internet are two uses where I will have the screen on for more than just checking email and etc.
Your reply gave me hope and I wiped, reset and reinstalled today. All seemed well and then... auto-reboot. This is driving me nuts. I'm seriously considering reverting back to stock to see if that stops it.

Don't go back to stock. I did and it did not fix the rebooting problem. Now I have the rebooting problem and don't have root anymore. Out of the frying can and into the fire.
What's funny is that my phone went through a few days where it would randomly reboot, and this was before I rooted. When it rebooted for the second time in a meeting, I pulled the battery, and didn't put it back in until the meeting was over a few hours later. Don't know if that did anything, but it hasn't rebooted on its own since.

Having same issue and my theory is that its sd card related in my case at least... I think it might have to do with froyo netarchy based kernals found in most of the newer froyo roms combined with a slow sd card. (on hardware rev 2)... try flashing a 2.1 rom like fresh 1 or one of the 2.2 roms with an htc based kernal like the am evolution or cyanogen with snap5 or 7.11 (onyl 7based kernal ive tried so far, was panicking because i thought my evo was wrecked). those have both worked for me and i had that issue with 1.3 baked snack, fresh 3, evio and damage control. got random reboots when phone is totally idle, in use, charging or not. evio runs super smooth but the restarts...)
edit for spelling and update roms that gave me the reboot issue.
+1 for random reboots here... it is CERTAINLY more prevalent during GPS use, but I've gotten it without.
Fresh 3 + King BFS#4 got me in a bootloop requiring wipe reflash, standard baked snack 1.5+whatever kernel it comes with has been doing it.
I dig the battery life I was getting... but if undervolting is causing this... ugh.
I'm also getting the boot loop problem. Stock 2.2, all updates.
I've even done the hard reset.. twice!
I tried to follow it with LogCat, but reboot disconnects adb. I was thinking it was the SprintZone app. The P.O.S. app is doing all sorts of non-sense while booting, but eventually it'll reboot around the 11th time and freeze at the "htc EVO 4G" screen.
I wish we could get some resolve here D;
Random Reboots
Thanks for all the input and I'm sorry to hear that I'm not alone, but it is a bit comforting to know I'm not the only one that is frustrated.
I took gleax's advice and I dropped down to the stock 2.1 release found in the thread number 715915. (Sorry, the forum won't let me paste the link.)
I did the required wipes prior to installing the new ROM and I'm still seeing reboots. I now see the OTA update for Android 2.2 and I'm tempted to accept, then send the phone back to Sprint in the even this is a hardware issue. I'd prefer not to, but there doesn't seem to be a way to identify the issue and work towards a resolution. I've tried logcat, but the log seems to start clean after each reboot. That being the case, I don't know how to capture the log leading up to the reboot that would help identify the issue. Any suggestions on a logging tool and where to post to help several of us that are seeing this issue?
Gleax suggested this is may be SD related, so I bought a class 4 card in addition to dropping down to 2.1. I'll give that a shot and try another clean 2.1 install. I'll post the results here in the event they may help others. I'll likely give it a week before unrooting and seeking help from Sprint. I really need a usable device more than I need root access (although both would be ideal).
I had this problem on a very regular basis when I was running OTA 1.32, 2.1 android.. but since I rooted and went to SteelH's stock 2.2, no issues at all. Updated radios when I did that as well.
Hrm, I may have to try flashing to a stock build for awhile... it'll KILL me, but even fully wiping, new radios, cyanogen, still get crazy reboots.
I'm referring to the inability to sign in to Google Talk or download Market apps when connected via the Sprint network, as described here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815345
To summarize... When connected using Sprint 3G, I often get these problems
- Can't sign in to Google Talk (I get the message "Cannot connect to server, will retry shortly"
- Can't download or update apps (I get stuck on "Starting Download...")
- Other internet features work OK
- Switching to Wifi solves the problem
no problems at all for me
why is this here ?? should be in

BOOOOOO-YAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
lol......j/k.....I couldn't help it. To answer your question: No, I haven't. All my rom/kernel/software info is in the sig. I've had an update/download hang on "starting download" before, but I'll just cancel the download and restart it and that usually fixes the hiccup. If not, it's nothing a quick reboot won't fix. Try clearing the data and cache from the market app.
P.S. If switching to WiFi solves the issue, it could be poor reception that is causing the said problems to happen. I get very poor 3G reception in the building I work in, and many things have problems working when I'm not on WiFi.
I have this problem as well. If you do find a solution, let us know! I've had this problem for a while now but could not pinpoint when it began. I know I didn't have this problem on 2.1 though. Definitely not due to weak signal (Chicago).

Were you running 2.1 on the same device?
And, I'm guessing you were rooted both with 2.1 and 2.2, right?

+1 on the advice too
uninstalling the market update usually solves the problem for good. Ive noticed it on hybrid fr83/91 roms as well
rooted with fresh and kingkernel 10 and have had apps hanging after downloading and wont install/update...
I had those problems for a while a couple days ago. They said it was a network problem. It resolved after about 8 hours.
No problems here. Using 135 nightly.

Go under applications and clear data for vending...sometimes files get crossed. Will fix market problem
I don't have anything called vending in applications
this is a known problem and has been for months....
usually if you uninstall the market updagte the problem goes away for good.
also try a non hybrid rom thats not based on fr83/91
fresh, evervolv, cm, evo nonsense work
I've had this exact problem for a while now. Its incredibly annoying. What usually works for me is stopping both talk and market then clearing the date and doing the same with the HTC_checkin service.
This usually lets me download the app but not always. I haven't tried uninstalling market updates, will that remove any features like the search prediction and such?

I was having the problem with Fresh too. I just installed the new stock deodexed 3.30.651.2 ROM, and I'm STILL experiencing the issue. Very annoying!
a friend and i are having the same problem except she never has a problem connecting to gchat. but when shes not signed in it she's not able to download apps from the market place.
me on the other hand there are times when i cant sign on gtalk at all, i'd either have to restart the phone or switch to wifi like the op said. oh and i'm also unable to download apps when i'm not signed in gchat.
this gets especially annoying when i'm in a middle of a conversation in gchat and i lose connection and cant log back on! and i hate using 3rd party messengers since there arent any good ones out! but trillian is starting to creep up on me.
oh i'm also rooted with fresh
Hello all, Im brand new to the forums and just recently was shown the wonders of rooting and messing with my phone by a coworker. I am amazed to see all the stuff this thing can do that Tmobile didnt bother doing for me! I recently went from CM6 to CM7 then upgraded to RC2 and somewhere in there I lost GPS all together and Gmail stopped sending my emails. No matter what I do GPS will not work. It shows that it is on everywhere I look for not in the status bar. I can find my location using wireless but its not nearly accurate enough for me. I read somewhere on the forums that uploading to the newest radio will help the GPS but the link it gave me showed it being posted in mid January and I figured there had to be something newer than that . I am also uninstalling and reinstalling Gmail to see if that solves my problems with it now and I will edit this if that changes. Ive read a few places where people were talking about getting an FM radio on the MT3G and most of the time it was said that it is not possible, it isnt right? Any info or advice you pros can give me will be greatly appreciated by this noob! Thanks guys!
EDIT: Looks like I should have taken my own advice and reloaded Gmail before asking about it, I can now send emails!
As for your GPS, once you get the newest radio flashed, go out door to a place with clear sky (as in no buildings hovering over your head). I thought my GPS didn't work either, then I stepped out and turned it on. Bam. Works perfectly fine.

download TuneIn from market
I got the radio downloaded and I finally have GPS!! I had read about downloading the newest radio before but the only one I saw was from January and I was hoping to find a newer one or a different fix. The only issue I have with the GPS now is the blue arrow that shows your position keeps going sideways :-/, another issue to research. As far as the FM radio goes, Ive see apps like that before but the reason I asked about an FM radio was to pick up the broadcasts from the TV's at the gym. Thanks for the post though.
Yea,my gps takes long to lock on outside, then when I'm driving or stopped at a red light it always reroutes, when I'm moving the arrow goes sideways and moves along so I can't really know where I'm going might a bug or sumthang.

Anybody figure out the problem with the navigation? I've got the same problem with the blue arrow being all funky. Makes google maps unusable.
Anybody else also know why this CM7 RC4 is killing my battery life?
I just updated my radio to the newest one and it's still got the same problem.
I did the radio too but Im still having problems. Im on nightly 36 now, but Ive tried 33 and RC1-4 without any luck. I heard someone say 32 works but ive also heard people say all of them works for them so im not sure.
my google maps gps is pointing to the wrong direction too. And get a long time to pinpoint my location.
cm7 and newest radio installed.
The guy who introduced me to all of this rooting stuff suggested I do a backup through titanium and then a full wipe before reinstalling CM7. I' not comfortable enough with all this yet to do it on my own so I have to wait until I work with him again. Mybe someone with more experience (or atleast confidence haha) would want to give this a shot and let us all know? I feel like it could work because there are so few of us having this problem and those that aren't have nothing different (in hardware or software) from the rest of us, so a wipe and reinstall could work...right??

Every time i have an issue with a ROM, i always full wipe and reflash and then restore my necessary apps through Titanium. It usually does the trick.
Full wipe involves data/factory reset, cache partition, and dalvik cache, all in cwm recovery menu correct? Is there anything else that needs to be wiped before flashing a new rom?
Before I get n00b bashed, I did "Search this thread" for the answer... (and other forums) Maybe I am just too n00b? Anyway, here goes.
Given kudos on this ROM already (Syndicate Rom: Frozen...anything is better than stock Froyo, but this is just AMAZING). But I was having some troubles with receiving incoming calls. Caller always got "All circuits busy" Or "cannot complete call as dialed".
Soooo, I wiped and reflashed. Tried to make a call (before restoring titanium backups) it worked, but my girl was still having troubles calling me...
So I restored most of my titanium backup (stuff that mattered?) and when trying to call out, I get "com.android.phone stopped working" and had to forcibly close it. So, I specifically restored phone 1.0 and contacts and all that from my titanium Backup, and still got the same issue. I am currently backing up stuff to my computer off the phone, going to format the card and do a fresh flash and see if that helps.
Thing to note, my account IS linked with Google Voice. Could that be an issue? And if not, is anyone else having this issue? Seriously the ONLY problem I am having with this rom. Thanks, guys!
Edit. Wipe and reflash did not help, however the phone is running MUCH better! Still not getting phone calls, though. Data works, MMS, etc, spotty 3G acceptance, though. Starting to get a bit aggravating. ANY help would be GRAND.
*sigh* think I got it. Flashed a different modem (EC03?) and it did not work, then flashed BACK to EC05 (AFTER the fresh flash) and it seems to have rectified the issue. HUGE thanks to QBKING77 (if that is his name on here) for the AWESOME video tuts and great linking to the site. I will update if call status changes. But I would still be interested in knowing if anyone else was having the same issues?

the only thing I could think of is did you "freeze" any apps in titanium LOL yes I froze the wrong thing once and got the same error's I think it was the voice mail stuff seeing i went to gvoice didn't think I needed it but I did.
Nope. All apps were left unfrozen, just because I am too n00b for that chit, lol.
However, I flashed the EC05, and all incoming calls (90%) seem to be coming to me. Odd part is, it SHOULD be going to my voicemail if it cannot be dialed. I am thinkin Sprint is to blame, and I need to have it out with them.
*sigh*
Oh well, everything else is tits... Just waiting EAGERLY for 1.2... Chompin at the bit and all that!
Might get bored tonight and flash back to stock... see if I have the same problem.
Question. Let's say I want to "image" my phone the way it is right now (kinda like Norton Ghost used to do?) Flash back to stock, yadda yadda... Is there a way to RESTORE my phone as is (every byte) back with clockwork? Or is that what Nandroid does? Because if I flash back to Stock, play for a bit (see if it is sprint's fault) and want to flash back, I will have to reconvert back to EXT4... using clockwork 3.0, should I just use the .zip (.img?) that nandroid creates instead of the base ROM?
If any of that makes sense, kudos will be given for a clear answer, lol
just loaded Emerald Envy 2.0....
Absolutely love the ROM, but I can no longer receive calls. I've tried the wipe (x3), re-downloaded the ROM, no joy. no combination that I can think of. Have tried all the latest modems (EC05/EF02), no joy.
I did notice that the phone log does log that a call was received, but it never rings or brings up the phone application.
I also tried flashing the Genocide 1.1 kernal. no joy.
I'm about to go back to my Midnight ROM that I Nandroid'd earlier today before I started down this road. Really hope I don't have to, i'm hooked on this ROM!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My errors seem to be different than yours. Mine would not show up in my call log at all, nor would the calls go to voicemail. Are your callers able to leave messages?
Mine turned out to be a sprint/phone issue. Their networks have been all kinds of crappy in my area since january. Sucks, but all I could do was call, complain, and get credits.
My new epic seems to be working fine, and sprint seems to have fixed their issues in my area. I was running 1.2 up until last night with no issues callin/receiving. I only updated to the latest GB leak because it is hella stable and netflix works. Just seems to have some 3d issues. But I do not game much on here.
Keep troubleshooting, and give 1.2 a whirl. While your problem is not ROM related, I am very confident your experience (and battery) will be much better.
Oh. And call Sprint. Complain and whine. You will get credit on your bill. Lol.

2 Questions, I just flashed the new rooted OTA gingerbread update and it went through flawlessly and is running great.
But it seems now that when i go on my Home PC and view the android market, that it no longer "finds" my phone .. It keeps telling me that there are no Android devices associated with my account.. I definitely logged into my google account when after i flashed the new update as my market is working all all my contacts were restored... anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?
and my other question is
How vitally important is it for me to flash the NEW RADIO that came out with this new gingerbread release? From what i've read flashing a radio can (though very rarely) cause you to lose your WiMax keys or cause alot of problems in general, and my phone seems to be running awesome right now... what exactly do i gain with this new radio update? just a possible better phone connection?
Possible being the key word....
if everything is good, then don't mess with it. What's the old saying, Don't Fix it, if it ain't broke?
I haven't run into your market issue personally, but there's a "don't see your android device?" link on the market site that takes you to this: https://market.android.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=1141080
No idea how helpful it'll be, but who knows.
As for the radios, they're not vital at all. I flashed the latest for myself because I'm pretty comfortable with it, but it's not gonna break anything if you don't.
