So I had my Evo rooted through Unrevoked 3 and attempted to use Unrevoked forever to gain full Root and NAND unlock. Well after 2 attempts, I get the S-Off up top but still can not flash unsigned ROMS such as Cyanogens CM6. I've searched up and down and can not figure this out for the life of me. Any help would be appreciated.
Use Toast's method for NAND unlock (it's part two of his two part method) and follow the steps to completion. After that, wipe and flash CM6. It's what I did. Worked perfectly. BTW, I think this should be posted in Q&A. So you know next time.
EDIT: Also, if you looked at the first 1-15 pages of the [Guide] How to root Froyo or w/e the thread it called, you would have found your solution. Look harder next time.

Or you can just flash the ENG bootloader using the package from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752832. If you've already done Unrevoked Forever, doing that should let you install Cyanogen.

Yeah. I used the OTA Froyo root that was just released and had tried flashing CM6 RC2 afterwards and got a message notifying me it couldn't be done. I spoke to jiqqaman and he suggest to start at part 2 of Toast's method. The reason for that is part 1 is the root, which you've already done, and the second is for NAND unlock, which you need. Also because Unrevoked isn't a true NAND unlocker. After you finish the steps Toast has, you can go ahead and wipe, flash, and reboot. Make sure to flash the latest radios as well. You can find those in another thread somewhere around here that says All Radios or something. Should check second or third page.
Unrevoked Forever is a NAND unlocker. It's just that Cyanogen checks for the ENG bootloader, which Unrevoked Forever doesn't supply. You can easily flash the ENG bootloader after you've done Unrevoked Forever and then not have to worry about trying to update your PRI.

this method didnt work for me. i was unrevoked forever, and flashed the .zip package and now i cant get my custom rom to boot from recovery, it kicks me back to hboot menu. where did i go wrong?

Don't kno what's goin on... but I've followed the directions word for word and it doesnt work for me. Maybe I should try reflashing unrevoked forever and then trying this again?
after you flash unrevoked forever, run toast's part 2 for everything to work right. meaning...
do unrevoked 3 then unrevoked forever
download the PC36IMG.zip that's in toast's part 2 root
put that on the root of your SD card
turn on the phone by holding volume down and power, select yes, and let it flash
once it finishes flashing then you'll be booted into a Sense pre-release test rom
download clockworkmod recovery and put that at the root of your sdcard, rename it to 'recovery.img', also put the flash_image file on toast's part 2 on your sdcard
adb shell to the phone, you should have root access, if not type in 'su'
type this in: 'cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image'
type this in: '/data/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img'
then type in this: 'mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/PC36IMG-eng.zip'
turn off the phone, and turn it back on holding the volume down and power buttons
choose recovery and then flash cm6
it's simple if you read through the other posts a bit more thoroughly.

You run it on your computer, plug in your phone, and follow the directions. You get full root and ClockworkMod recovery installed on your phone, as well as unrevoked forever. It's super easy.

Don't update through Sprint (ever). That's not how we roll around here. You're gonna want to root your phone as it is, then flash a custom ROM. You can tell which ones are based on the latest OTA on that wiki page; flashing one essentially "updates" you to that version. Personally, I recommend Fresh Evo 3.3.0.1 if you like Sense, or CyanogenMod v6.0.0 if you don't.
The biles guide was made a while ago, so it makes sense it is out of date. The best next one, that works, would be regaws method. There is even a mac guide using his method if you have a mac.

I've been wondering this as well. I ran the newest unrevoked3 and it gave me full NAND unlock and S-off but I'm not sure if it is permanent and if I should run forever as well.... would appreciate some input on this!

Here is my question on this. I just recieved my new phone today and I am planning on using this method to root my phone. Before I gave up my old phone I did a Nand backup which has all of my programs my "fresh rom" and ect. on it. Now on the old phone I used the Toast method and nand unlock to root my phone. Will I be able to just do a normal nand restore after I use the unrevoked3 to unlock my new phone? Or do I have to start all over? I checked on the sd card in the Nandroid backup is there. Thank you in advance

I read that the other day, but I kept reading posts stating to run unrevoked forever after unrevoked3 to make it permanent. Was a little confused... I guess unrevoked 3.21 includes unrevoked forever, lots of contradicting posts though.
one thing about that wiki that confuses me is when it talks about .ZIP ROMS, once i use unrevoked can I use Fresh's .ZIP?

Unrevoked 3 was pre-Unrevoked 3.21. That did not do Nand unlock and S-Off and required you to flash Unrevoked Forever to get Nand unlock and S-Off.

.zip ROMs are flashed via recovery. unrevoked should give you CWM recovery, and therefore you should be able to flash ROMs (including Fresh). Make sure you back up, and also wipe data, cache, and dalvik-cache before flashing. If you need help with that, here's a step-by-step:
Have full root with NAND unlock, by unrevoked 3.21 (recommended) or otherwise
Download the ROM you want in .zip format (Go for Fresh!)
Put the .zip into the root of your microSD card
Install Quick Boot from the Market
Use Quick Boot to enter recovery
Go to nandroid, then make a backup
Go to wipe, and wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik-cache
Select "Flash zip from SD card"
Select the one you downloaded
Let it run
Reboot your phone
Congratulations! You are now part of the cool kids club!
Alternately, purchase ROM Manager Premium which allows you to download, backup, wipe and flash all in one step from within Android and without interacting with recovery. $4.99 and totally worth it.

OK, but what about those of us that don't want a custom ROM? Is there any reliable way of getting from root 3.26 to root 3.29 without a data wipe?
As far as I can tell my best reliable option is:
1) Use Titanium Backup to backup all my apps/settings
2) Use unrevoked3 and the stock 3.29 ROM here to upgrade to 3.29 and regain root
3) Reinstall Titanium and restore my apps/settings
Is this correct, or is there an easier way?

S-off is unrevoked forever. So if it shows S-off in the boot loader then your good, u don't need to do anything else.

On another Evo which I've helped root, I just downloaded the new 3.29 rooted stock ROM, wiped cache/davlik cache, flash new ROM, reboot, then go back and flash the new radio/PRI stuff and it works without having to wipe phone data.

It is my understanding that as long as you have the same Recovery flashed (Clockwork or Amon RA) as you did on your old phone you should be able to copy the backups to your SD card (maintaining the same directory structure as they were before) and restore them without issue.
Okay, so I rooted my phone before 2.2. I'm going to try and root my friend's phone as well, but he's using 2.2 Android. Is the steps still the same? There's the unrevoked method. Is that the same as rooting and NAND unlocking? Will I have unrevoke and then do the rooting process?
Unrevoked is a one click full root and nand unlock. The one thing it does not give you that regular root does is engineering hboot .76, which is semi necessary. So run unrevoked 3.2.1 and flash the hboot that can be found in one of the first few pages of the dev section and it's like you just put in hours of work in 10 minutes. Btw, you can't root 2.2 the same as 2.1. Its much harder. That's why people use unrevoked.

Question on this. I rooted with the unrevoked method with 2.2 and when i type in cd /data/app-private into the terminal emulator on the phone i get nothing. Then when i try to verify nand in recovery nothing happens. I downloaded unrevoked3 and that's it no pc36img or anything. Did i miss a step? I'm on a Mac and i have 2.2. I

Unrevoked requires no setup on a Mac. U did it right. To verify nand, boot into boot loader and make sure it says s-off on the top line far right. That means you have system access. Now you need engineering .76 boot loader. Will post link if you cant find it.
Also, the command cd never gives you any output. Try flashing a splash screen to prove you have NAND (and to impress your friend) i will give you instructions if you ask nicely... Ha

^before you flash the rom from what i've learned. You want to perform all backups/nand backup before you flash roms because you need to do a complete wipe of the phone... cache, dalvik cache, and data... theres a specific wipe order i read either on here or AC. nandroid backup is supposed to be in the recovery menu. i can't access it because i haven't installed unrevoked forever and .76 bootloader. unrooting unrevoked and using a different method... :/

What is the best method for rooting? I used the Simple Root program to root mine, but I don't think that works on 2.2
Look in the Android Development section for rooting 2.2. It's not nearly as easy as simple root but the instructions are pretty clear and straightforward.

Unrevoked 3, the newest version, does unlock NAND. I use that method and it worked well and required only few clicks. I also rooted using the old method, Unrevoked 3 worked just as well and I am Nand unlocked.

Apparently not. I used Unrevoked 3 last night to root my Evo and when I tried to install BusyBox it gave me a failed message saying something along the lines of "....or you are not NAND unlocked" If I'm missing something please let me know. Im ready to flash Fresh3.3 but I dont want to make any moves until I'm absolutely sure I've done everything right

Just so we have this straight. I've already flashed Unrevoked. I have S-Off and Super User and all of that.
You're saying to reflash, Reboot, check and make sure everything is cool.
Then run Unrevoked Forever BEFORE or AFTER runnin AmonRa? In the unrevoked menu I can choose my own recovery shouldn't I just do it there?

This. I was about to say the same thing. UnrEVOked 3.21 does 3 things: Root, NAND unlock and S-OFF all in a nice little executable. Once you get that wonderful "Done" on unrevoked's application you are done and can flash away any custom ROM.
I used the old 2 part root method and MY evo has been rooted since June. Now my friend wants his rooted. He has also done all the ota updates. If I do unrevoked 3.21, will I be able to unroot if he ever needs to take his phone back to Sprint ??? I've read a bunch of mixed results.

I've seen lots of info saying that a EVO 4G that came with 2.2 can't be rooted but based on what I'm seeing here that looks to be outdate info? Are you guys saying that unrevoked 3.21 is meant to be used on a EVO that comes with 2.2 or one that was already rooted?? Might be a dumb question but nothing out there clearly states this...

Hello, was wondering if I could get some help. I followed the instructions posted in the development thread. I am Rooting for the first time. I ran unrevoked3. then I flashed unrevoked forever from cwm. all of a sudden, I cant get into recovery. It just takes me to the bootloader. Should I reflash unrevoked3? I was reading in some threads that unrevoked forever is no longer needed and is built into unrevoked 3. Is this true?

If you flash it through hboot rename it to PB31IMG.zip. But you can just use ROM Manager to flash it too. I just never use RM, so I do everything the old fashioned way.
I think BrettApple is reffering to fashing a radio. If your device is indeed reading S-OFF at top, you have root access. Navigating to recovery option in HBoot should bring you to clwm. You could also try updating clwm with rom mangager see if that works.

I'm confused. I thought in order to be rooted you have to be S-off? If that is the case how can I flash any rom I want? I also have AMON 2.3 recovery flashed as well...

The original Unrevoked 3.1 came out and could root the EVO before they released Unrevoked Forever. I think all you need to do is go check out the Unrevoked Forever site (http://www.unrevoked.com/forever) and you should be able to S-OFF your rooted EVO so that the bootloader will be able to apply the PC36IMG.zip files.

Thank you so much! I am now S-off by running the Unrevoked Forever.Zip file. Flashing radios now. Thanks again! I assume that I'll have to flash a Sense ROM to update profile after I flash the radios?

Wrong. S off is just the security setting. It has no correlation with being rooted. You can be rooted and still be s on like the op.
S off only enables the hboot to flash unsigned/unofficial images to the partitions. S off also allows the system to be written to while android is booted.
The unrevoked forever instructions even state you need to be rooted and have a custom recovery in order to set s off.

Very good post. There is alot of misconception about this. Glad someone cleared it up
