[Q] Weather APK and TI uninstall - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm using Fresh 3.1.0.2 and I was wondering what I need to uninstall to remove weather from "accounts and sync." Also, would removing it affect Fancy widget's built in weather?
Also, if I uninstall the apps using TI backup, is there anything else I need to do, such as deleting the APKs w/ root explorer?
Thanks!

If you just want to keep it from syncing, you can just uncheck the box next to it. If you don't want to have it show up at all, you can just delete the apk from /system/app. I don't remember the exact name but it should have weather in the name. I don't think it breaks anything major, but then again, removing parts of Sense like that is kinda like playing roulette. Its all integrated, so you never know for sure until after you've done it. I recommend making a copy of it before you remove it as a backup. Then you just have to push the file exactly as its named back to the folder and reboot.
Here's the exact steps you can take:
From your computer:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
su
cd /system/app
ls
Note: You only need to run su if you have a $ instead of a # when you run adb shell. Otherwise, you can skip su.
This is where you can look for the necessary app. like I said, I don't remember the name, but a list will show up in your console.
Code:
exit
exit
Note: if you didn't have to use su before, exit only once, or you'll exit your command prompt/terminal
Now in your console:
Code:
adb pull /system/app/<name of weather apk> \backup\
adb shell rm /system/app/<name of weather apk>
If you are using linux, replace \backup\ to /backup/. You can also make this any directory you want to use to keep the backup file in.
To put the apk back later:
Code:
adb remount
adb push \backup\<name of weather apk> /system/app
If you have any questions about the steps, let me know.

How can you install APKs from other ROMs?

I have looked around quite a bit, and haven't really figured out the straight answer on this.
I have seen apks that can be downloaded of things like the clock or gallery app, and then I have seen custom roms that include things like the AOSP dialer, contact app, browser, etc. However in my small amount of trying, I couldn't install them on top of another ROM (or stock).
Is there an issue with signing them, or does it have to be done in recovery mode, or do I have to remove the existing stuff in something like Titanium backup and then install the other APKs, or would my only option be to learn the dark arts of rom cooking?
Edit: Answered thanks to mrchu001. Doing an "adb remount" and then issuing the install command from the shell worked.
I'm not sure if this works for ALL apks between roms, but when i flashed Fresh it didn't have the cooliris 3d gallery that DC has, so i opened the zip, and copied the APK from one rom to the other then flashed it. I'm sure there are some programs that just won't work even if you did it this way, but something to consider.
That works in most cases..
Just get the zip on your computer, open it extract the apk you want and adb install it to your connected device.
No luck with either method mentioned above. I'm sure I don't know what I'm doing... but I did an adb install <apk name> and got an error:
Code:
MacBook: tools laydros$ adb install CarDock.apk
1344 KB/s (238640 bytes in 0.173s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/CarDock.apk
Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_UNEXPECTED_EXCEPTION]
And I grabbed one of the base rooted roms, unzipped, added the CarDock and DeskClock apks to the system/app folder with everything else, and the ROM failed to load. I did the same clockwork rom manager install rom from SD card methods I have done before. I assume this means that the zip was not properly signed.
The apks I was testing were ones from bugless beast 0.4, any ideas?

it looks like you didnt direct your terminal correctly. i'm assuming you have the sdk on your computer btw. now try to upload the rom you want on your phone. plug it in. make sure usb debugging is set. make sure the apks you want to put on your phone are on your desktop. and try this:
Code:
cd ~/*where every your sdk is*/tools
./adb remount
./adb shell
./adb install ~/desktop/*apk name* /system/app
./adb shell reboot
maybe you already tried but just incase.. do you have the Unknown sources check box "Checked" under "Settings/application" menu? if not you need to to install apps not from the market..

The remount part did it, and then doing the install from adb shell. Thanks so much.
For the sake of anyone else that finds this, once you type adb shell, you are working from the phones shell instead of the one on your computer, so you would skip that command. I ended up moving the files to the sdcard, and then doing
Code:
cd ~/*where every your sdk is*/tools
./adb remount
./adb shell
(at this point you are at the phone's prompt)
install /sdcard/*apk name* /system/app
exit
(now you are back at the computer's prompt)
./adb shell reboot
Now I need to figure out what to install to get the phone/contacts working. Calendar and Mms applications were easy, but after installing several apks for the phone and contacts I just have a mess.
FroydVillain 1.0.0 install *.apk files in /system/app
Hi has anyone tried installing another apk file in FroydVillain 1.0. I follow the steps in the thread described i am able to issue adb shell commands and i have placed the apk files in the SD card as described. but i am getting an error as below that the file or dir is not found. tried several paths:
# install /mnt/sdcard/*.apk /system/app
install /mnt/sdcard/*.apk /system/app
install: can't stat '/mnt/sdcard/*.apk': No such file or directory
# install /sdcard/*.apk /system/app
install /sdcard/*.apk /system/app
install: can't stat '/sdcard/*.apk': No such file or directory
I use /mnt/sdcard path cause on Froyo the SDCARD folder is under /mnt.
any help solving this. i am trying to install some of the HTC Sense UI app to sys app. Like Stock.apk for test. and HTCAlbum.apk and others same result every time.
I have tried also AndroidCommander 0.7.9.6 updated for froyo. installing with it's install option button, and also from the console i run the shell command for install, successfully adds the apk in sys app folder but the apk is not installed, and asks for installation.
Thanks.

Well, if you're trying to delete system apps -- you won't be able to delete them from Estrong. I believe Root Explorer will allow you to delete those files, but its a paid app.
I would just advice you to delete whatever apks you don't want from terminal/shell.
Just plug your phone in and open terminal/command prompt and type:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app
ls -- lists all the apps on your phone, find what you want to remove
rm AppName.apk
rm AppName.odex (not all apks will have odex files), so don't worry if you get an error message
Example:
rm Mail.apk
When you're done, type:
exit
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the answer. I didn't know that I couldn't delete apps with estrong. Though I find it easier to delete apps within android than going into terminal and executing the commands myself. Thanks for the heads up though.

Sure no problem.
I must be an idiot. Everyone keeps saying just type adb shell in a command prompt window. I just get errors saying ADB is not a recognized command. What gives?
It is in the sdk/tools directory.
Got it, I'm in. But now I'm getting read-only file system as I attempt to delete APK's.
Alternately, you can delete apps in one-click with Titanium Backup (which every rooted phone should have, IMO).
adb remount. Got it. Removed a few things I wanted gone after fresh 0.5.3.

[OOPS!] bootloop due to adb push /data/app/<file>.apk, can not delete :(

Hello guys,
I probably did a stupid thing. I could'nt install an apk and figured that I could just push it to my android and see what happens. I didn;t think I would get in a bootloop though .
I had astrid.apk, it's modified so it is transparant. I could not install it in Android.
What i did:
Reboot in recovery
Did the fake flash to start Clockwork mod
Connect the Android to my pc with an USB cable
adb push astrid.apk /data/app
I read that about 1.2MB was written so I guess that went right.
Did I forget a / ?
Is the map app overwritten?
Well, next thing I did was a reboot and now I'm stuck in a bootloop.
I tried to delete the file (rm /data/app/astrid.apk, rm -r /data/app/astrid.apk). But it could not find file or directory.
I did this from the shell i starten with adb shell. And I tried it with adb shell rm ...
Did I screw up that /data/app map? What to do now?
edit:
I can do cd data. But when I do cd app (when in /data) then it says "you can't cd to app"...
it's adb shell, and while you are in there, press cd /data/app. while in the data folder, press 'ls' to list all entries. usually apk's have different names and stuff. look for the app and then press rm /data/app/... .apk
Make sure you are in recovery and have system mounted.

edit:
I think I have overwritten the whole app map with the file astrid.apk, d*mn.
"adb push astrid.apk /data/app"
I would say, just wipe and start over..
This is how I usually do the stuff:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /data/app
ls
look for app to remove
rm ....apk
I am no pro, wipe is easy!
I made a complete nandroid backup this afternoon, I just did a partial restore, "data" and everything works fine again!
Thanks for helping. Lesson learned:
Linux != Windows (a whole map is easily overwritten with a file).
I doubt that you have overwritten a folder with a file. But good that everything is ok now.

The new YouTube.apk just needs to be placed in '/system/app'. What I did was remove the original YouTube.apk and put the new one in its place and voila. Here is the method adapted for Windows (I think it's all right for Windows). This is also assuming you rooted with a one click root that included the remount script and that you have adb on your computer (the one click rooter should have adb included with it).
1. in the cmd prompt, go to the folder where you have adb and type:
Code:
adb.exe shell
2. inside shell:
Code:
$ su
# remount rw
# mkdir /sdcard/backup
# cp /system/app/YouTube.apk /sdcard/backup
# rm /system/app/YouTube.apk
# exit
$ exit
3. now in the cmd prompt again:
Code:
adb.exe push \path\to\YouTube.apk /system/app
4. Reboot the phone.

ok i get to remount rw but the when i type in the nect code it says
mkdir falied for /sdcard/backup read-only filesystem
I install it using terminal emulator.
All I do is type
Su
#rm /system/app/YouTube.apk
#cp /sdcard/DirectoryWithTheYoutubeApp/YouTube.apk /
system/app
Or after you rm, just use the "My Files" app and go on your sdcard and click YouTube.apk and it'll install and work fine. But remember to sign out of youtube before you close it by going to your page and clicking sign out or else it'll keep force closing after you start it up.
I hope I helped...

LOL BUT THANKS FOR THE HELP ALL OF U!!!!!! U GUYS ROCK!!!! N SO DOES THE NEW UTUBE APP .....BTW I UNDERSTAND UR NOT SUPPOSED TO SIGN IN TO IT RIGHT???
I just uninstalled the original, put the modded youtube.apk in the SDX backup folder and installed (restored) it with SDX stock app remover. Simple, fast and no typing required.
Glad you got it worked out though.

Glad it's working! Having the SD card mounted while trying to adb is a common mistake and always a good first troubleshooting check.

[Q] Can't delete anything in system/app: Help appreciated!

What's up XDA?
I've been messing around with my Xperia Play and i successfully got it rooted. My next task is to get all the annoying icons and processes that are running in the background deleted to make my phone run like a champ (Also i just like the clean appearance of only the applications that i use in my menu, perhaps OCD).
With that said i have tried a few different ways to get my system folder writeable but nothing seems to work as I am unable to delete anything in that folder.
My questions are the following:
1) How to delete files out of this folder.
2) Is there a way to do this via computer so i don't have to mess around with an explorer application on my phone.
Thanks for the help thus far everyone!

You can delete system apps with adb. Here are some commands you may find useful:
"adb remount" - This will remount /system/ as R/W.
"ls /system/app/" This will list all the .apk's in /system/app/
"rm /system/app/***.apk" - this will delete the specified .apk file.
Thanks for the help.
I was able to get the abd to list out all the files in the apps folder but when i type adb remount it gives me an error saying "remount failed: Operation not permitted"
Any tips?

It's because you do not have insecure adb. Download and install this .apk. after install run it, and your device will reboot. You now have insecure adb and can remount /system/. also once installed you can uninstall app
