My EVO died. Sprint replaced it with a new one. I am trying to restore my old system. I had done a nand backup, copied it to my PC. I have now copied it back to my sdcard. Rerooted my new EVO (with simple root) and flashed recovery. When I try to restore the nand backup, I get the following from the recovery log:
Restore BCDS-20100809-1819 ?
Press Power to confirm,
any other key to abort.
Restoring : .
nandroid-mobile v2.2.1
Searching for backup directories, matching BCDS-20100809-1819, to delete or restore
or compress
Looking for the latest backup, will display other choices!
Error: no backups found
Error : run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via adb!
Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? I restored the whole /nandroid directory. In recovery, I get a phone with a red triangle with a red exclamation point overlayed. Also at bottom "Build : not set". Saw neither of these on my last EVO recovery. It is supposed to be amon-RA recovery.
Please help.
Figured it out. My serial number changed of course. Had to get a sub-directory under nandroid with the new serial number. Restored fine.
Still don't understand, I get a phone with a red triangle with a red exclamation point overlayed. Also at bottom "Build : not set". Saw neither of these on my last EVO recovery.

Anyone got Nanadroid working with Hero yet?
Need to take a back up on my device before I start playing around with it!
recovery.img with nandroid here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543571
Beat me to it - I did a successful Nandroid backup today before I rooted my Hero. So I guess if I need to I can restore that unrooted image. I used the recovery image in the rooting thread above xx
Hi Dayzee,
I'm pretty new to all this, su just to be on the safe side: does your method (linked above) allow me to make a full backup of everything I have in my phone now, and to restore that backup if / when I brick it trying to root it or install a different build?
Thanks in advance.

yes it will restore whatever you had when you made the backup inlcuding setting and just anything you can imagine.
i think that is what Nandroid does, but I've never had to restore from a backup so can't be sure - any thread or wiki on Nandroid will tell you.
The recovery image that you boot during the rooting process has Nandroid built in - when you get to the recovery console screen, scroll down to Nandroid back up and press the scroll wheel - away it goes, and then says back up completed - the file is then on your SD card in a folder called Nandroid and from the looks of the console, to restore, you'd just scroll to that option and press the scroll button.
If you're in doubt - do nowt - that's my moto. But good luck if you want to have a go

Thanks minogue, that's relieving. I'd like to start learning to make the most of my hero, but I'm quite afraid of breaking it, what with being so expensive and me having a monthly data fee for it and all.
Hi,
What is the image 'cm-hero-recovery.img' exactly?
Is it a particular Hero release? I presume this is the image of the rooted hero....but how does it compare to the unlocked HTC supplied Hero? Are there missing applications, widgets etc...?
Thanks
Phil
n00b question no. 1
I'm new to Android so I suspect you'll need to be patient with me, very patient. I'm trying to backup my device but I've been unsuccessful so far. This is what I'm doing:
1. Power down handset
2. Power handset back up(holding down back key) This brings up the Fastboot, I think, screen.
3. Plug in USB cable
4. Fire up CMD.exe
5. Enter "fastboot boot cm-hero-recovery.img" - this brings up Android system recovery screen.
6. but now when I select "[Alt+B]Nandroid v2.2 backup" it says performing backup for a second or so but results in: Error running nandroid backup. Backup not performed.
I tried removing the USB cable but that doesn't help. Any advice/ideas/anything, I'm desperate(not really, maybe a little: ). Thanks

hmmm, you need to have at least 152 MB + the size of your data partition free on your sdcard. If you have the space and still doesn't work, you can try to do a backup using command line from the recovery:
Code:
adb shell
nandroid-mobile.sh -b
ps. nandroid options:
Code:
nandroid-mobile v2.1
Usage: /sbin/nandroid-mobile.sh {-b|--backup|-r|--restore|-d|--delete|-u|--getupdate|--webget|--compress|--bzip2} [options]
At least one operation must be defined, try /sbin/nandroid-mobile.sh --help for more information
Not choices: Space! Thanks.
OK just did a backup works great Thank you all
In ROM Manager, after going to "Manage and Restore Backups", and select the file I want to restore, a window pops up with the message: "This does not seem to be a valid backup. The MD5 file is missing."
I'm not sure what is wrong. If it helps, I'm on an EVO and I didn't use the default name that ROM Manager generated and used my own. EDIT: I've also gone into Recovery > Nandroid > Restore and selected the desired backup. I then get the message: "MD5 mismatch!"
Thanks in Advance.
I've never used Rom Manager, but do you know what recovery you are using? I usually just boot into recovery and use the option to restore from there. When phone is off, hold volume down and power then use vol down to select recovery
I've been reading/searching everything I can get my hands on but I still have some questions to ask before I bite the bullet on a new ROM for my supersonic.
I've done the unrevoked root and fiddled around (of course did the nandroid backup as instructed). Subsequently I've installed setcpu and other root-requiring tools.
However, now I want to try cyanogenmod but I realize that in the event something goes wrong, even if I have done a nandroid backup, I won't know what to do. All writeups I've found involve using windows command line (fastboot.exe?).
So the short of my question is, how do I:
a) Restore to current setup
or
b) Restore to 100% stock
(I do have rom manager with clockwork recovery installed but don't know how they work (can't find a good write up.))

when you boot into recovery create a new clockwork back...
wipe system/data/davlik cache
flash cyanogogen
flash gapps if you want them
then reboot phone (will boot into cm6)
no at any point in tim you want to go back to the back you made.
power off phone
reboot into boot loader while holding vol down and power
chose recovery
should boot into clockwork mod recovery
wipe system/data/davlik cache
choose backup/restore
chose your restore you made earlier.
let it do its thing and reboot phone
easy money its breeze
Backup your Nandroid to your Mac
I'd advise backing up your Nandroid to your desktop as follows:
Plug your data cable into your Evo.
Plug it into your Mac.
Depending on the ROM you're on, you should have a USB icon show up in your notification bar on your Evo. (That's the bar at the top of your home screen.)
Pull the notification bar down.
Click on the line that says, "Charge only."
Choose "Disk drive," then "Done."
Your phone will show up as a Volume on your desktop.
Double click on it.
A Finder window will open showing the contents of your microSD card.
You want to find the Nandroid and copy it to someplace on your Mac.
I have only used Clockwork Recovery once. The Nandroid is either in a folder named "Nandroid" or it's in a folder called "Backup(s)." You will have two Nandroids, one you made originally when you rooted, and the current one. I'd save both.
I'd also suggest you start using Amon RA for your recovery. It does a better job of wiping Cache and Dalvik and has the ability to backup your Wimax keys. (It doesn't often happen that you lose your Wimax keys, but if you do, it often means replacing your Evo.)
Now, when you're ready to eject your Evo, right click on the Volume on your desktop (mine is called "NO NAME") and eject it.
THEN, go back to your Evo, pull down the notification bar and click on the line that says, "Disk drive."
Click on "Charge only," then "Done."
NOW you can safely unplug your Evo from your Mac.
With clockwork your backups will be located in /clockwork/backup id you intend to back it up to your Mac
How big (MB/GB) should the backup be?

I've tried this and also the automated method from rom manager and nothing works. If I go into recovery it shows fastboot (says nothing about clockwork nor about nandroid). It does give a momentary run down of green text that makes it look like it's trying to locate some files but says they're not present and forces me back to the screen before I can read it all...
Any ideas?
Looks like something was wrong with permissions or clockwork. I reflashed clockwork, forgot and re-allowed rom manager and now it appears to be backing up properly.
Thanks to those who posted up!
I'm trying to restore a desktop full backup I created using adb backup. When I type in adb restore backup.ab, The full restore screen pops up on the tablet, I type in the passwords, select restore my backup. A toast message appears restore starting, then a few seconds letter another toast message restored ended. Ive tried it with no passwords, and a password in only one field, same message every time. How can get my backup to restore successfully?
Tab is rooted with stock ICS.
i followed a guide from techbeasts.com
using ODIN to push "CF-Auto-Root-konawifi-konawifixx-gtn5110"
then with ODIN i pushed "RECOVERY_GT-N5110-CivZ_rev1.1-PhilZ_5-ODIN.tar"
then i downloaded a rom and through the CWM recovery i chose "clean for new rom" or something along those lines
trying to install several different roms keeps giving me a "status 7". i tried multiple recovery versions of CWM, and 1 TWRP.
now the backup i MOVED to an external SD wont flash back, it gives me a md5 mismatch error.
please help!!!
right before i get the "status 7" error it says:
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
i was able to get my old back up to work when i went to restore.
THIS IS WHY ITS IMPORTANT TO BACK UP YOUR RESTORE FILE TO AN *EXTERNAL SD CARD*
i broke in to the back up file and cleaned out the "nandroid.md5" with a text editor, tried the restore and it worked!
