[Q] Adapt old fm transmitter for Vibrant? - Vibrant Accessories

I have an old Ipod Touch fm transmitter that I am interested in adapting for my Vibrant. (Why? Because I am a skinflint and somewhat O-C.) It's a Newer Technologies Ipod accessory that worked pretty well by broadcasting to the car radio on an infrequently used channel like 87.6 or something. It plugs into the cigarette lighter on one end and has the stupid Ipod connector at the other end of the cable. So I'm thinking that 1st I would have to get some kind of female adapter for the proprietary Apple connector, and I guess also something to divide it up between the power input and the audio. Am I thinking about this correctly? Am I missing some kind of big incompatibility? Is this actually possible to accomplish?
And yes, I do need a real job!
Thanks for any (constructive) thoughts that may be offered.

USB FM Transmitter

My car doesn't have a tape player or an aux plug, so the only way to play music in my car is through a transmitter. Currently I have one for my iPod but I'd like to switch over to using it for my phone instead. Does anyone use one of these that can recommend a good one?
If im not mistaken but the usb ports on the evo have no audio going to it.
Just to let you know
i did a quick google search they are a ton of them that plug into the audio jack of the evo.
Doesn't the evo already have an fm transmitter in it..
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G.
yep it does, did somebody figure out how to exploit that and send music to a car radio, im gonna have to look around for that. it'll give me something to do!

Option 1 gives you more freedom to be wireless and mobile. But you have to keep it charged.
Option 2 means setting your phone somewhere is going to be awkward unless you have a windshield mount, in which case you're going to have 2 wires dangling off your phone/windshield while you drive. Pick your lesser of two evils, until someone releases an App that lets you transmit music straight to an FM signal from your phone itself (no 3rd party hardware required).
Last I read earlier this week...there is still discussion about whether it really is a transmitter. Then if it is...it is all broadcom and not open source drivers.
I just ordered one of these http://www.bestofferbuy.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&inc_subcat=1&search_in_description=1&categories_id=&keyword=3.5mm+Male+to+iPod%2FiPhone+2G%2F3G%2F3GS+Female+Adapter+Cable+-+Black+%2895CM-Length%29&x=0&y=0
I already had the fm transmitter from my iphone, so all i needed was a cheap little adapter. All it does is convert the ipod connecter to a 3.5 jack.
hope someone finds out how to exploit built in fm transmitter
Depending on where your auxiliary power plug is located...I like this concept. FM transmitter, phone holder & charges all in one. Seems like it gets very good reviews.

I bought that exact one from Target... and returned it the next day. Seems like EVERYTHING interferes, it doesn't let you go under FM88.1, the bass is horrifically BAD, and I get some really crappy signal distortion if my phone is charging while this is plugged in (WTF??)
What I ended up going with is a module that plugs into my XM receiver and gives me a 3.5mm TRS plug, which can either be plugged into my Zune or my phone (or anything...) without having to transmit that signal to a FM station... it's basically straight into the head unit. No more bass issues at all.
I know it isn't what the OP was looking for, but I was looking for something along the same path. I purchased a kit to add RCA inputs to my stock '03 cobra stereo and that worked wonderfully. I had a 3.5mm to rca cable plugged into it so I could listen to Pandora. I was reading about Bluetooth A2DP and was looking for a A2DP to RCA convertor. Found a nice little gem, the Motorola T605 hands free with A2DP. I'm going to order it next month and install it.

Fm transmitter?

Is there ever a possibility of hacking the evo's fm radio to become an fm transmitter?
Sorry if this is duplicate, searched around and didn't see anything else on it.

I highly doubt it. Taking a screen and making it into a camera is pretty much what your asking. Maybe you can buy a portable FM transmitter and somehow cram it into a external case that sticks out similar to the 3500mah battery.

no the hardware actually says its possible to transmit as well as recieve fm radio. now if someone could actually make it work....

radio transmitters and receivers aren't fundamentally that different. It's likely possible, but you would need to write it into the kernel.
I would love to see this happen and show it off to a friend that works with the Civil Defense.
No can do. A radio receiver, and transmitter do contain some of the same circuitry but are arranged differently. No software can change that. Plus the phone is not FCC type accepted for transmitting on the FM broadcast band.

The phone has an FM Radio Transceiver capable of both broadcasting and receiving. I believe the major reason why we haven't seen a transmitter mode, even HTC, is due to FCC licensing. I'm not too savy on the FCC's world, but I would imagine that the EVO's transmitter would fall under the same low-power group as those little iPod and other PMP FM transmitters that just plug in to the headphone jack.
Might be something to bring up with Cyanogen and some of the kernel devs, after they get the FM receiver working.
I'd like to see this... Bring it up to cyanogen...

Ah, what exactly do you guys want to transmit? Signal wouldn't get very far...
We've been through this before.

Some of us have cars which are too old to have an Auxilary input, but too new to have a tape deck.
Ha! I read some other posts, and realized that it would definitely be a handy feature. I resigned myself to burning CD's from my music collection, as it got annoying to connect my iPod to an FM transmitter. Extra wires, chargers, and so on.
Well, hopefully someone figures it out. Probably kill the battery though.

I would suggest a hardwired FM modulator to add an aux port. My wife's 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor didn't have one and the FM transmitters sounded crappy to me. Took me about an hour to hardwire a FM modulator in and now she essentially has an AUX port. It sounds much better than the transmitters since it's injecting it's FM frequency directly through your radio's antenna port.
Here's one pretty similar to what I installed - LINK
The drawback compared to a FM transmitter is that this is not portable.
Another possibility is to just purchase a new radio. Some car stereo's with aux inputs are cheaper than a new EVO.
I stopped using my FM transmitter with my iPod a long time ago because I hated the extra cables, and the transmission wasn't very good, though I tried several.

Is there some car audio manufacturer that actually makes nice stock-looking radios with features like BT, equalizer, and aux-in, without having to have 20 blinking LEDs or looking like it was part of a boombox from the 90s?

Cardock

I'm looking for some suggestions on a cardock. I want something that plugs into the lighter and perhaps had the functionality of my old iPhone Belkin, the Radio transmitter. Does such a thing exist yet? I guess i could get a new car stereo with an aux-in but which would be more costly at this point?
i haven't seen anything like this yet but from my experience, i HATE fm transmitters. i would rather spend the money on a new headunit with an aux input...just my .02

LOD for the E4GT ?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get an LOD for the Epic 4G Touch?
In case you have no idea what this means, here's your lesson in audiophile gear for the day:
Line Out Dock (a.k.a. LOD), n.: a cable commonly used on audio devices which creates a "line out" similar to a headphone jack but with no volume control and often better analog signal quality. This is useful in that it allows a user to bypass the headphone jack of a device and run the audio signal straight into an external amplifier. This is often done when an audiophile-type individual has headphones which benefit from a audio source with greater output power than a portable device typically provides.
Examples of LOD's:
Apple iPod/iPhone
Sansa Fuze

Samsung HM3700 Stereo bluetooth headset
I bought the Samsung HM3700 Stereo bluetooth headset which comes with one. I am sure Monoprice.com has one or even Ebay; but if it's worth 24.99 to yah you can buy the headset.
Sort of what I'm after, but not really. I don't want a dock, I want a cable. This is for portable listening on the go with an amp.
Thanks!

Not sure I see what you're talking about; our just looks like a bluetooth headset to me.
The pinout for micro usb is the same across phones, right? If so, this should work.

Wow...if this works...
Does it mean I can listen to pandora on my phone and stream it through this LOD into my cars aux ports for superior sound quality?!

That is quite interesting and just might work.
What remains to be seen is whether or not that provides superior sound quality to the headphone jack. It just occurred to me that the Samsung car dock (which I have) is essentially the same thing as that USB micro to 3.5mm jack plug unless the phone has software which can recognize the difference. In this case, volume would still be controlled via the phone. I might have to test and see if I can hear a difference in sound quality, but I doubt it (or at least doubt that the dock will be better.)
I have both the official samsung desk dock, and car dock. They both have 3.5mm audio line out. Isn't that what you're asking for? I didn't know it had a "fancy" term though..
Edit: Maybe it's not exactly what you're asking for. I think you're hoping to get line level straight out of the DAC, which I don't think is possible with the SGSII. The audio dock line out is around the same quality as the headphone jack (as far as my "non audiophile" ears can tell) and it's certainly volume-controlled by software. Anyhow, some of the new custom ROMs out have beats audio and dspmanager built-in, which go a long way into tweaking the way audio exits the device. You may want to look into that.
Yeah the desk dock is still less portable than I'm looking for. I have DSP Manager on my phone and it helps to some extent. Guess I'm just stuck with the headphone jack. Thanks!
im pretty sure you need usb-host first, i think a usb dac has been used back on the nook color w/cm7 but then you lose portability and all that.

Skullcandy Crushers (Wired) modding

So, I've had this idea for a while, and I managed to build a semi-working prototype of them. Basically, I'm looking to convert them into something that can be used both wired and wireless via bluetooth. I know they have a wireless version of these headphones, but I already have the wired ones, and I prefer the look of the wired ones more. My prototype consisted of some cheap BT earbuds that I took the electronics out of and soldered wires from where the earbud speakers were soldered to where the 3.5mm jack was connected (i know that they probably shouldn't be directly on them and should probably have a diode or something to prevent signal from going out the port, but I'm never going to be using the wired and wireless at the same time so not much point, plus, it was a prototype). Anyway, in my attempts to turn it into a more permanent solution inside the cups, I managed to fry the board for the cheap BT earbuds. So the project went on the shelf (figuratively) for a while. Now, I'd like to actually get this done as I'm getting an Android Wear 2.0 device soon. Suggestions on a micro form factor bluetooth audio receiver? Also, another thing is that the headphones themselves use a 1.5V AA battery to power the bass stuff, would it be possible to use the existing battery compartment for powering the chip, perhaps using a similar size Li-Po battery that is 5 volts that is run in series to both the headphones board (down volted to 1.5v) and the BT chip? I'm also looking for some advice on how to control the power to the BT chip without having to open the things up as it requires a screwdriver. button poking through the side of the cup? or a switch under an earmuff? Basically looking for part idea and other suggestions.
It's nice to see someone skullcandys as most headphones that get nodded are the expensive kinds, I like the style and simplicity of Skullcandy so I'll chime in.
Bluetooth: as for the circuitry I haven't been able to find a standalone board for purchase, you could try one of those cheap "make any headphones Bluetooth" adapter and re use the guts. Also I've seen a few that use 16ohm drivers instead of 32 so that could cause issues
Charging: since you're using the crusher amplified one, thats gonna be tricky. From the Bluetooth headphones I've torn apart, they usually have a charging ic that matches the battery's may(i.e. 800mah or so). You might have to make another circuit like a micro USB to a multi battery charger ic but that also poses it's own issues with the bass circuit and the Bluetooth board circuit so it would be a gamble. Kinda makes it seem like you'll need a Bluetooth headphones, with built in haptic feedback as a donor to work.
Switches/buttons: you'll probably have to get crafty with a Dremel and some switches. I've though of doing this and Drew up some plans where I just mount buttons through the plastic and wire it to whatever it needs connection to. I haven't found adequate buttons for this though.
Honestly I hate to say it as I love a good project where you get what you want from making it. But the crusher wireless sound like a better fool proof option.
