Any help would be aapreciated on this:
Anytime I rejected a call with text message, it is always sent as a MMS as against been sent as a text message (SMS) and since my plan does not include MMS usuage, I always get charged for the service.
I uses this functionality a lot as I normally reject calls with text messages anytime I am in a meeting.
I remember correctly that messages used to be sent as an SMS in 6.1 roms and few of 6.5 roms I have used sometimes ago.
Can anyone help on this?
Cheers
on my phone it doesn't even work. i configured it so when i reject a call my phone should send a sms, it never does. instead of that i receive a sms: you have 1 missed call.
no, i did not miss that call, i rejected it!
big difference.....

Mine does work but I will get charged as it would have been sent as a MMS message, it is annoying because I know it can be sent as a SMS message and for free.

same thing as in the other thread, no need to bump this and advertise an app, that is not even for this OS. post deleted.
Firstly, I would like to pay respect to the developers who mapped the hardware button for the camera app. Respect to you all. Starting this thread hoping those same geniuses would be able to solve this problem. Android generally has this crazy notion that if i want to send a long sms, it will be cheaper for me to send an mms. I get like unlimited sms but i gotta pay for each mms i send so everytime i need to send a long sms, it costs me money. plus, if the recipient does not have mms configured, its money lost from my side and nothing recieved on theirs. so is there any way to stop the native messaging app from converting sms to mms after 3 sms length.
currently using Handcent sms for long sms but its a pain and it crashes often.

uhm.
why would a long sms convert to a mms?
I've never seen this happen.
Have no idea why this happens. if i use "MyPhoneExplorer" to compose sms on pc and send them, this problem doesn't occur. tonight, i decided to send a long sms directly from my phone and i saw that it converts to mms. so decided to google it and it appears Xplay isn't the only phone with this problem. a quick browse on google shows that loads of device owners are frustrated by this. check it out on your stock device as mine is stock also. just bootloader unlocked and rooted ;-)
Yea, mine does the same, bootloader locked, and does it un-rooted and rooted.
Very annoying. You'd think sony ericsson would have made this an option.
But i did have this issue with 2.1 on my motorola milestone.
mine just gives me a notification saying it will send 2 SMS, it even counts down hoow many characters i have left until it adds another SMS to it (only when below 20 character left)

Its after lyk 4 or 5 sms's it turns it into a mms, i can confirm every android phone i have had (hero, desire, desire hd and xplay) have all done this, i resorted to sending half an sms then writing the other half n sending that lol

I just tested mine to 5 sms. All it does it countdown how many characters I have left for each sms, and then adds another sms.
Converting into an mms sounds like a cheap trick to make more money by some carriers.
I am with Vodafone Uk and they don't use this trick yet it seems, although thanks for this post because now I will be keeping an eye out for this.
Still don't see it as much of a problem though. Just send one sms at a time?
Happens often here (when going into 4th txt), I just break messages down not to get stung with a MMS charge.
It can be annoying as when breaking the message down you can get a reply from the other side before they have read the full message, which can cause confusion.

Try expressing your feelings to your GF one message at a time...
Have you tried writing the whole message, copy/cutting half of it, sending half then quickly pasting and sending the rest? Or email/call the person lol? It might just be me but my texts are pretty small.

Well the solution is to go with a network provider that doesn't adopt this cheap tactic.
Alternatively, telephone them and threaten legal action with demand for all lost money sent on mms.
Changing an sms into an mms can not possibly be legal.

It's not something the network controls, its a Android thing.
I guess it make sense to people in the states and how most contracts work over there.
It is annoying though.

Why does my Xperia Play not do it then?
What makes mine different, other than the network providers own software?
It has to be a network provider setup?
I can't imagine an android stock rom ever having this feature.

Ok just to make a few things clear. I noticed this problem on my Xplay which has a stock rom 2.3.2 and i got it sim-free. i have tried it with several different vendors, like vodafone UK, 3, O2 and international vendors in Pakistan as well. Also, i've tried composing a message with no sim in it and still have the same problem. So its a problem with the OS and not network related. Saw the same problem on a stock Galaxy S Sim-free.
So Devs, please find a solution to this if possible.

how can it be network providers?
I got my handset SIM free (generic UK rom) and have used a few networks. it does it on all of them. and reports of it being the same on other Android devices.
It is nothing to do with networks, it Android OS.
I have just installed stock 4.1.1 with stock kernel. I have a weird problem.
Problem: when going to SMS>new SMS> contact (numbers come in this format - 1-706-9919...first 3 digits of area code is missing) so I get error message not sent.
What's the fix?

my issue is that when i text first 3 digits of a contact is missing and it only shows middle 3 digits and last 4 ..so message "sent fail" comes because its not a complete number.
Ever find a fix to this?
I just upgraded to 4.1.1 from 4.0.4 & am having the same problem.
My txting worx fine as I can receive sms and reply to them successfully, I can also send them fine if I select text from a contact card, the only time it doesn't work is when using the messaging app for a new msg & typing/selecting the contact from the list that comes up as you type, it shows the proper contact but omits the area code in the number & then doesn't send the msg

THe FIX is to go to your contacts.. and take off the 1 in front of all your numbers.
The problem is that your numbers are set up like this 1 (234) 567-8910.. it should be like this (234) 567-8910
Omit the 1 and everything will be fine.
Enjoy.
Well taking out the 1 works for the sms, but then if I take out the 1 & its a long distance number I get the message saying "please dial 1 before completing this long distance call" when I try to call that contact, so now it's either a problem with sms or with calling.
Isn't there an option to have it automatically dial 1 b4 a call? Or any other workarounds?
No fix yet... I went back to ICS. Someone on rootzwiki mentioned to add smsc number for your network provider pressing *#*#4636#*#* ... Or insert sim in non android phone which would fix it.
None worked for me

How about putting the full code, including the country code, in? So in the UK, it would be something like

In general, for the purposes of being able to receive texts on multiple devices, there are alternative texting apps that can be set up to forward texts to another number. Some built-in texting apps have the option already built in.

On the stock ROM, there's no forwarding option. You'd have to install another app to do it.
Stop texts from breaking up, How?
Every time I get a long text message it's broken up into multiple messages, it's annoying because sometimes they dont all come in at the same time, or they do and i think i have a **** ton of msgs lol. It's the same on the stock messaging app and google's messaging app. Is there a setting somewhere that I've missed? It's happened with incoming msgs from iphones and android phones on different carriers.

There is little you can do, it is the carrier of the sender that is doing it. Many carriers limit the number of characters you can have per text. So if they go over it gets broken into multiple text messages. It is not an issue on your end.
I also hate this.. When I had att I didn't have this problem..
Wasn't there an option to send messages bigger then a # of characters through MMS instead of using normal split SMS?

Yes I think there is. This is for sending messages though. When receiving a message it depends on how the senders app sends it.

Easy fix, just make hangouts your default SMS app...
Otherwise you're at the mercy of the carrier.

Just a guess, but I'd say it's likely due to being Google's app and having tighter integration with the framework than carrier based bloat.

Yeah hangouts works great. Only problem I have is you can't send or receive mms while on wifi calling.

Just tried this sending myself a very long text via Wi-Fi on Sprint messaging app; it does work to combine the messages without converting to MMS.
Like others have said variables may limit results. My wife is also on my Sprint account using an iPhone 5 and her messages to me split from what I can see; don't know if hers from me split or not. Cross platform texting hasn't been reliable.
Have you tried the setting?

Initially failed to Motorola Photon Q. Had found the setting and enabled it and rebooted the phone; split the long message into 4 out-of-order texts. Did the System settings/System update/Update Profile on both phones and it works both ways. Sent the same text to to the iPhone 5 and it split. I've asked my wife to update her profile but she's busy; will try again later.
On my phone, had to defrost Samsung DM Service and reinstall Sprint Zone and let it update and opt out of EUL anonymous data sharing, agree to terms before I could update the profile.
BTW, combining the long text and sending a short text after that may have the shorter message arriving first. I actually sent an inquiry after getting notification that the long text test message had been forwarded back to me. The notice and inquiry went through before I got the combined message sent first.
I don't know if it happened to me or not.. never pay attention to it....gotta test later to see if if it's the same problem
How long is long. . I tested by sending to myself. But don't know if it is long enough.
My test text message consists of 80 words which was splitting into 4 text messages. Seems to be working between two different Android phones but still unknown if profile update will get it working cross-platform to/from iPhone. The Sprint iPhone 5 on the account seems to frequently have inability to sync texts with Android over Wi-Fi. Sometimes, it's just texting in general that the iPhone 5 loses.
For testing, just kept using the same message forwarded until it was received by both phones without the split.
May be wrong but sending it to yourself may only be an indication your phone can combine. It takes the profile update to tell Sprint you wish to use the combining method which appears to be an exception to every phone. Being on Gingerbread and CM for a long time, this is the first time I've seen the combining feature. About time! Hope it continues to work without frequent profile updates then broke again/update again.
This doesn't make sense. .i sent to my wife iPhone.. she received one full message but when she sent to me using the same text message it broke up to 4...wth

Did you perform the profile update on both phones? Does the Sprint iPhone have the combine text option for texts?
I haven't tried the profile update and retest with the iPhone 5 yet. Haven't seen the the settings menu on the iPhone 5, either. I think that phone is still on iOS7; afraid the update would result in early upgrade.
Not on the iPhone just the note 4
Open the stock messaging app and go to text message settings and make sure auto combination is checked.
