UNRooting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying to unroot and so far have thoroughly screwed things up. I've tried a few different things but i can't get a base unrooted ROM on the device.
i have currently
HBoot 0.79.0000
microp - 041f
radio-1.39.00.05.31
april 14 2010,15:41:34
can someone help with the proper files that i need to complete this unroot.
right now the device will only keep rebooting. i tried re-flshing my damage control 3.5 rom but its not working.
I think i need to get the device up and running before i can try any other unroot options. i can still get to the clockwork recoveryv2.0.1.3
thanks

I was able to get the device back up and running. It is still rooted. I got it back to its original root state by toastcfh.
I still can't get to non root state.
any help?

search the forums for "RUU" and go run that. it will bring you back to stock. there are tons of threads, please please search before posting.

I have tried 4 Ruu files. None work. They keep giving errors. I've read through many threads. The last change i can think of is to get the zip file from out of the ruu(s) but i dont know how to extract them. They extract as .cab files not .zip files.
Additionally
my image version is apparently 1.47.651.1
does anyone else have any suggestions?

when using the ruu.exe(s) i get to the sending signature phase and after a few seconds i get the error "Error[140]: Bootloader version error"

It's always going to have root. What you want is root access. If you don't have a root user, you won't have anything.

sorry to hear that, so what shipped rom did you try to install. from here?
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/
For about two weeks I've been reading on the forum trying to figure out how to go back to stock. I try everything and was getting error code from not connected to different boot loader. Then I finally figure it out. Try this and let me know if it work cause it work for me.
First go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835&highlight=Engineering+SPL and download all the files in the beginning post and follow the instruction all the way up into it ask you to
"- once booted into Android put the recovery.img linked above on the root of you sdcard"
Stop and don't do this part.
Now you want to use http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/ RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6_Radio_1.39.00.05.31_release_171253_signed.exe file to unroot and be back to an older ver. and completely stock. At this point of running the exe. file you shouldn't get any error code and should fully execute and install a unrooted stock rom. Remember to have the latest HTC drivers also. If you need help pm me I have all file needed if you can't find them but most of them are located on the link post. Sorry for the quick post.
thank you i will try
hey i cant get couple of the files, i need the first file and the last file. thank you

nice write up. after doing this did you happen to notice whether your pri was 1.34 or 1.40?
The PRI doesn't change. Don't know why but it doesn't install the latest 1.4ver.. Also soon as you go back to stock rom its a good ideal to do a factory reset in your settings. I hope this was helpful.
do you need to unroot to return your phone or what?
This worked for me
There is a signed shipped RUU update that will bring you back to stock on this site somewhere I don't remember exactly where i found it but you can do a google search for stock ruu rom htc evo and it should come up, after download connect you evo to the computer usb and select just charge, and then run the exe program ruu update, when i did it said that if failed the first time, and the phone was stuck, i just clicked exit to quit from the application, unplugged the phone from usb and the white bootloader screen should show, i then plugged the phone back into the computer and ran the program again and it picked up where it left off perfectly. After the update is done you can go to system update and get the ota update of 1.47 this will kill your root though, good luck
After the RUU it will still remain at bootloader 1.34_003 because the PRI 1.40_003 is not in the RUU. We will need to wait and hopefully it will come with the Froyo build. But take in account that with 1.40_003 you can not do custom roms.

[Q] RUU Not Working & HTC Devs Bootloader Unlock Not Working.

My phone will not update from any RUU & HTC Devs Unlock Bootloader also does not work.
I loaded a custom rom about a week ago and it locked my bootloader. Now I cannot do anything. My CWM Recovery has gone too. So I'm stuck.
I have managed somehow to load an old rom:
RUU_Marvel_HTC_Europe_1.33.401.2_Radio_47.10.35.3029H_7.46.35.08_release_185724_signed.
This is the only way I got my phone working again.
I have tried other Stock Roms more current via RUU, no luck.
I have tried other Stock Roms more current via Bootloader renaming to PG76IMG, no luck.
Therefore I cannot even update to current anything and what makes it worse is that CWM Recovery has gone. I found this great for Backing Up my phone and Restoring it after trying out Custom Roms.
Anyway, if any one can help me in any way possible and/or point me in the right direction, I would be most greatful.
Please help, if you can.

At the moment, I cannot change these because of what I've mentioned in my original post.
Make a goldcard (search on google) and the you will be able to install any ruu with a software number higher than yours.

I cannot create a Goldcard.
I've searched and tried some methods and also looked at some videos too.
I just cannot get the methods to work for me.
I've been trying for a long time to create a Goldcard, about a six months. I get so frustrated I give up.
Can you suggest a particular method that you know works?.
Could you post the method you used and where you get an error?

SimpleGoldCard,
Step 3 Get CID. I chose MMC0, MMC1 and MMC2. No joy.
Unlockr Method.
Cannot get the CID code to reverse. It just doesn't want to know.
There's an app on the market called goldcard helper. Try that.

Thank you.
Tried it and managed to create the Goldcard.
I placed the Goldcard in my phone, tried to update the rom via RUU 2.13.401.2 and went upto 19% complete and then I received an ERROR 171 failed connection.
Basically I'm back to square one again.
I just do not know what else to try.
I am still searching for solutions but with no luck.
You used the goldcard.img file with the simple goldcard tool right ?
Open simple goldcard tool on your computer, skip the steps which are for the cid, click load goldcard img, navigate to the downloaded img, then click patch mmc, (i dont remember the exact process). Then your goldcard is ready.

I've done all that already and got the message "SD Card is now a Goldcard" or something like that.
As I said, back to square one.
There's a tutorial somewhere for that error in the general section. Search for it.

Return to stock 1.31.651.2 Sprint HTC One after root

OK, So after searching and Searching for a way to go back to complete stock after taking the latest 1.31 update and rooting my HTC One, and not being able to use any current RUU without having to gain S-off. I finally did it. I am 100% stock on an updated software version of 1.31.651.2.
So here is what I did and please feel free to step in and let me know if there was an easier way.
Step 1.
I unlocked my boot-loader to gain root privileges
Step 2.
I flashed TWRP
Step 3.
Created Nand Backup if something fails
Step 4.
I flashed SuperSU
OK, so that got me rooted. but I wanted to go back to stock after playing around with certain roms my phone started acting goofy.
this is the part where it gets a lil tricky.
in order for me to get back to stock on my One to the most current version of 1.31.651.2.
this is what I had done.I installed an app from the market called Rom toolbox lite(FREE) put REVONE in /data/local/temp
gained S-off. installed a stock RUU 1.29.651.7. Now the only problem is that I was S-off and my boot loader shows tampered and unlocked.so I used revone to remove tampered with the -t command and also wanted to lock the boot loader with the -l command. in order to get s-on. booted into the boot loader and selected fastboot and entered fastboot command, fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 to regain s-on.
ok so I am still technically rooted so in order to remove all root instances I ran again the RUU 1.29.651.7. all good so far. I double checked by booting into the boot loader to make sure I am s-on and locked along with no tampered flag. YES!!!!. so now I booted up my phone . skipped all setup processes. and went straight to the check for updates in the phone menu. I updated to the next most recent after the 1.29.651.7 and installed 1.29.651.10. I download and installed the update. again checking to see if there were any changes in the boot loader. NOPE STILL ALL GOOD,YESSSS!!!!
so now it rebooted and again went straight to the HTC update menu and ran a check for updates and it then downloaded the most recent update 1.31.651.2. Installed and I checked the bootloader and I AM NOW 100% STOCK and on the latest software version.

I was having the same issues when trying different Roms and screwed up my phone to the point where roms would boot but them restart over and over and over...no matter what rom i loaded and any kind of wiping i did.
so I also returned to stock locking the bootloader and flashing stock RUU as you mention. Just tried going from 1.29 to 1.31 with OTA last night and it wiped my phone and didn't upgrade. So i'm hoping it was just a hiccup and going to try again.
Hope it works this time.

Okay guys so everything you described is exactly where I'm at. I've tried a million ROMs, process, adb.exe (no devices), etc...... Anyway here's my scenario.... Exactly yours: got my phone, rooted it, had S-On. the phone ran it's updated to 1.31.651.2 so there are no RUUs for this. Any extra details to get me there?
Where should I start? Please let me know if you can help.

[Q] How do I go back to COMPLETE stock?

Beforehand I had an iPhone 5 and it was so easy, just click restore and ta-da. I'm just so stuck right now. I tried installing a Google Play edition rom that has been ported to the Verizon model. However when I installed it would just keep saying com.android.phone has stopped over and over and over again. So I read a tutorial on how to go back to stock, but the download link for the RUU was down. So I used another RUU online that didn't have the same MD5. I used it anyway and it successfully got me back to Sense. But I think it isn't complete stock because there is 8 GB taken up by 'other' when people are saying it's usually 6 GB or below. Also, when I try installing Rumrunner it does its thing and says it's completed. But, the bootloader still says locked. I have S-Off on the phone because I didn't completely follow the instructions by disabling S-OFF. I tried putting in the fastboot command to unlock bootloader becuase I have S-OFF, but it says I don't have permission. I also have installed the drivers without HTC sync. Someway to get back to complete out of the box stock or just getting an unlocked bootloader would be so awesome. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Did you not backup your stock ROM? If not that was not a good idea. If you have a custom recovery still installed (how you installed the gpe ROM) flash another ROM or restore your backup.

Typically flashing a stock rom should revert you back to S-ON and lock the bootloader.

what i would suggest is to flash back the RUU, and then use the recovery instead of flashing another rom.
i had issues before with just flashing the RUU and expecting it to work like stock, but once i recovered the phone using the RUU's recovery (stock recovery), everything was honky dory.

Updater Bug: Unable to restart to recovery

Hello,
I wanted to install the newest nightly update. But when I tap "Install" it says "Unable to restart to recovery". Ive got a few questions here:
What causes this and why doesnt the errormessage explain itself?
Can I apply the update myself somehow (Where is it located and how can I apply it)?
Greetings,
Ravior
Honestly, if you don't know how to get to recovery then I highly suggest you stay away from modding android phones.

Did I say anything about that? You assumed that and simply insulted me.
Of course I know how to get there. I did that several times for installing and trying out stuff. But how should I know that I can simply go there and apply the update by selecting it and chosing install. I asked for that information and you didnt gave it to me, instead you where insultive. Had a bad day or what?
can you boot in Recovery via adb (adb reboot recovery)
Have same issue. The other day I tried to go from viperone 3.5, s off, unlocked/rooted, twrp installed 3.0.
After the installation attempt using clean install, got stuck in a bootloop. Finally was able to install a stock rom 5.0 using ruu. S off, unlocked
Now I cannot log into recovery.. I get that splsh screen with red waning text below but the top section in red says cannot load recovery. I tried a few reasons over the last few days, trying fastboot/adb but can not load twrp. Tried everything from 2.8xxx to 3.xxx.
cid is 11111111.
Also tried some other ruu's but says its not for my device, but it is. Unlocked, m9, hima
scratching my head here, I must be missing something

If had read anything to do with installing ANY rom it will have detailed instructions on how to install it, usually it will tell you how to get to recovery too. Even if it doesn't tell you how to get to recovery it is a google search away.
Spoon feeding is a no-no. You must try to solve issues yourself before asking and refer to the forum for "obtuse" issues.
As for the detailed output of why it failed, usually you get some sort of error code or phrase as to why. If not then you have to start looking into logcat. You will notice that it failed to boot to recovery so manually doing it will resolve that, then you just follow whatever guide you were using after that step..
I understand that things can get overwhelming when flashing devices but it is all part of the learning curve and knowing how to navigate your device is essential before even considering changing anything.
Further more, I didn't insult you. I didn't intend to. It was an honest opinion because if you don't do the basics you WILL "become a cropper", you'll probably brick your device.
Back to basics is my advice before you proceed to mess with ANY device.

Yup, missing the cid is supercid. No longer valid. Cid and mid must match the firmware you're trying to install.
The bigger issue is not being able to get to recovery at all... Will it go to download mode?.
Obviously you've read flippy's thread and sneakyghosts thread?

Yes those threads brought me back from a soft brick....
I remember back when I first rooted and installed viper there has to be a way to change the cid, isnt there?
Thanks btw

No honestly, I re read everything and t is right there, no question and it is appreciated. I was just concentrating on how to get back to a version of TWRP. Finally I was able to do that and still unlocked, S Off and have a TWRP 2.7 but every time I try to go higher I get the cannot boot recovery in the red letters. My bottom line was to install a 7.1.x rom. That is what caused all my original issue, tried to update into 7.1.1 RR Rom and everything crashed. I used a RUU you have in that thread (THANK YOU) and was able to get out of bootloop on RR bootanimation. I am running on stock 5.x, rooted as well.
Is there anyway to still move forward? Do I need to change the CID to match the firmware I choose within the device choices?
Thanks for all your earlier posts and it has become invaluable and thanks for any advice going forward.: good:
TWRP versions above 3.x require your M9 to be at least using firmware 3.x. The same applies to android 6/7 based roms. Either restore the correct CID for your SKU, flash the latest available 3.x RUU for that SKU and then install all missing updates via the software update function of the stock rom or restore the correct CID and look for a full-wipe firmware pack in Sneakyghost's firmware thread (located in the development section). Be aware that his packs don't contain a rom but that shouldn't be a problem at all if you want to install RR, anyway.
