Well, first of all, autokiller probably won't do much for you in Froyo, seeing as Froyo has some major memory enhancements. I'm not even sure if the file autokiller modifies still exists in Froyo. I'd imagine so, but I really don't know. All I know is, you really don't need autokiller at all.
Agreed.
I had Aaron La's Task Manager (a fantastic application management app by the way) set on auto-kill, etc and I my device ran much better uninhibited on both 2.1 and 2.2. I know it seems hard to believe but... that's the glory of Android...
Now I use Task Manager for install/maintain/uninstall purposes only.
I vastly prefer SystemPanel.
I used to be OCD about killing tasks, until I read more about how it actually worsens battery life
oh yeah, and the funny part is, Task killers won't even work in Froyo. They can stop apps, but the apps just pop back up into memory. All the OCD people out there are going to go nuts!
hi! like many of you i have been waiting for a clean aosp rom and it looks like we get some first taste of the forbidden fruit there. i found the following in the vibrant forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757000
remember it's for the vibrant and it's alpha (no radio & other things) but i guess it should work for the i9000 as well. it's just a start but finally things are happening . i will give it a try shortly
thanks to eugene, barak and possible others i don't know of!
just flashed it and played a little bit and here is my report:
* wlan works but is slower than stock
* calling works but 3g-data doesn't
* camera doesn't work
i didn't test:
* bluetooth
* gps
everything else seems to work and is quite smooth!
quadrant-score: 859, 875, 845
very nice work for an alpha version! i'm quite excited for what's to come
edit:
* after sync and reboot wlan seems to be as fast as normal...maybe my isp f***** up (again).
* after moving /data/data to /dbdata/data (dbdata is not used by this rom) this thing is FLYING!
* everything seems stable so far
i think i will keep this for now even if data is not working. awesome experience to have stock android (again)!
Very nice to see a asop on the way. Lets hope some I9000 dev have the time to adapt this for galaxy

after playing around with this i think there won't be a lot we have to change! just the kernel and the modules (i still use the JM2 kernel/zImage) and that's easy to adapt...

How did you install this asop rom?
I guess some files mods are needed? Build.prop etc?

nope. just flash the zip with clockwork over an existing firmware (in my case JM2). first boot will take a littel longer because of odex-ing.
Great to see some work on AOSP for the Galaxy S series. I've been surprised that no-one's done anything on it before, but confident that if the right people turned their minds to it they'd be able to get it running (even if all the drivers aren't sorted at first).
I don't really have a problem with TouchWiz, considering that I'm actually using LauncherPro and like the notification bar toggles etc. However, AOSP builds make me confident we'll see Gingerbread (and beyond?) because we won't have to depend on Samsung.
Wow, this is good news! I'm looking forward to having a stock Android. Although I want to try Sense more!
Im guessing once this becomes more stable, Sense is not far off?
wow, very good news.... when 3g-data will be fixed, surely i'll try this, even if i like touchwiz, i think that the sgs will be smoother without it....
hoping also in a AOSP FROYO ROM
report after ~17h use:
* gps doesn't work
* wlan works well and fast (i had 18-19mbit before with speedtest.net, same as my pc) but the driver seems to have some stability problems when it's idle for some time...
* short radio problem before, restart fixed it so radio probably is a little instable in the long run as well
quadrant scores of ~950 but linpack of only ~6.5MFLOPS? strange! everything is running very very fast and responsive (only fix aplied is: moved /data/data on /dbdata/data) and it boots faster. both definitely better than stock!
i am wondering why almost nobody seems to be interested in this. i had the feeling that more people wanted an aosp rom since we had a thread about that almost ever 2-3 days ...
I tried this asop for few hours: slower than best sgs rom's , no data connection, wifi slow, some app errors. Still not good enough for daily use but a very promising start.
Sounds really great, but I'm on JP3 right now and it seems to have less bugs than this :-/
This is only an alpha. I'll be more inclined to test when its in beta, as will many others I think. Especially as there are some troubles with core drivers.
Does this already run on a different file system (instead of RFS)? If not, will it be possible in the future to do so?

no, it does not repartition anything.
yes, if you repartition the nand and have a kernel with e.g. yaffs2 support.
should both be possible atm with some effort...
i'm really interested, although Wiz notification bar is handy (but i could manage with standard power control widget)...i'm not able to program or do other too technical stuff, but i'd be happy to check for bugs (when it'll become a little more usable,i'm on h3g and i absolutely need 3g )
yeah, they are working on it and will soon release the source on github. i use it for almost 2 days now and except the missing data it's working fine for me. really fast and sleek. i guess that we will soon have a beta version with most of the stuff working....i think it's just amazing that this rom is only about half the size of the samsung firmware even with gapps!
although i like stock android more 2 things i already miss are the notification bar and the movie player which can play so many more formats than the stock one, but thats a small price to pay.
Can't the .apk's be ripped and installed anyway? I'm looking forward to try this when data is working!
Is this 2.1 or 2.2?

it's 2.1
hm. the apps could probably be ported but it would be more complicated than installing the apk. they rely on libraries, the custom ui stuff and probably other apps like content providers etc. the only thing i REALLY want is the movie player! it's just very comfortable to just copy some movies/series onto the device before a train ride without the need to transcode

Interested, yea. As in "interesting to follow and see if it becomes functional." At the moment it's an alpha with no 3g data, wifi issues, bluetooth issues, no camera, and no GPS.
What more do you expect with it in its current state? Sheesh.
I noticed in the Advanced Task Manager that the bloatware apps I never use are always running. Amazon MP3, Google Voice, Sprint Football Live, etc.
I want to get rid of them to maximize battery life. I used to flash ROMs on my previous phone but the options for the Evo seem a lot more custom, with some not supporting certain standard phone features.
Is the best thing in my case to flash a ROM to get a clean task list (I want to keep all normal functions including Sense), and if so which one, or would it be better to delete all the stock apk's manually with Root Explorer?
Also I flashed the kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763 which I thought would boost my Fps2D rates above 30 but it hasn't made a difference.
Most of the custom ROMs are based off Sense, so the easy way to go would be to flash one and call it a day. Most of the bloatware will already be removed for you, and they all have performance tweaks as well. I use Fresh 3.2.0.0 as my daily driver and recommend it highly. Other good ones that I've tried are Evio, Virus, and Baked Snack.
Which kernel did you flash? I'm pretty sure that all of Netarchy's kernels have the fps uncapped so there might be something else going on. I hate to ask this, but are you sure you flashed it properly? Go to menu > settings > about phone > software information and make sure that your kernel version is the one you intended to flash.
Ok thanks. I guess my main concern was that some roms seemed to have a different UI in the screenshots.
How should I restore my apps, Titanium or nandroid?
It's just a skin over the SenseUI. All the Sense functionality is still there.
Nandroid doesn't restore your apps, it restores your entire system and returns your phone to the exact condition it was in when you made the nandroid.
Titanium is a great utility and makes it painless to to try out new ROMs. Back up your user apps and settings and then restore after you flash the new ROM.
I definitely want to keep everything as close to stock as possible without the bloatware. CM6 is out because it doesn't have Sense, so what's the second best? I am looking at about 8 options right now and the details seem like a lot to parse through, so I appreciate your insight.
If that's the case then maybe just keep the stock ROM and delete the bloatware. Titanium actually has a setting called Chuck Norris mode that lets you delete the bloatware. Just be sure to back it up before you delete it just in case you deleted something important. There are a couple threads here that have lists of .apks that are safe to remove, I suggest you do a search and find them so you know what is and isn't safe.
What did you figure out about the kernel and your fps?
Ok, thanks I'll give that a shot. I may end up trying CM6 anyway as I don't have 4G in my area and I'm curious to see what the alternative to Sense is.
You were right about the kernel. It was showing the stock kernel under software info, so I flashed netarchy's again and am up to 54 stdev 4 on Fps2D now. Thanks!

Do I want to know why you installed Google Voice yourself (Sprint doesn't ship it), but yet call it bloatware and don't simply remove it?
Exactly how do you expect GV to do what it does, and *not* be running? You don't *want* voicemail notifications?
As for the other apps, this is Android, not Windows. Just because something is in the task list doesn't mean it's consuming CPU cycles.

Thanks for this clarification, I was not aware of this distinction. My impression was that all tasks use up cycles. Is there more information about this somewhere?
On another note, the Fusion Froyo ROM looks like it might do just about what I'm looking for so I think I'll give that a shot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744368

There's a ton on info on the subject, but the most thorough write-up I've found can be read here. it as written before froyo, but it's even more true now.

very cool - that was one of the first apps I actually bought, and I would say that its a "must have" for folks that get into the nitty gritty of their phones or are trying to hunt down rougue apps. It's great not just for the battery monitor, either. I did a mini-write up for it just today in another thread here.

Bump for the awesomeness that is SystemMonitor. I hope people realize they shouldn't be using task killers or SetCPU as Android automatically modulates both of those to maximize battery life.
IMO the best option to further battery life is to use an awesome kernel. I personally prefer Netarchy 4.1.9.1 with HAVS for the familiarity, stability and voltage modulation, but the newest HTC kernel included with Fresh 3.2.0 is supposed to be even better. King's is also reported to be close to improving battery life as much as the newest HTC one does.
I know, that new kernel is supposed to be sick. I can't wait for more devs to start tearing it up in their own releases.

What apps are you running in the background? I used to have the same setup you have a little while back and I never had that problem! I don't recommend you use a task killer but go under settings/applications and running services and see what you got running.......you may have a lot of apps running at the same time like Skype, Game Emulators, any Navigation app, and things like that......you have to remember that some apps take up a lot of memory/ram and you can't run them at the same time with other ones.......
Also, try flashing a different kernal and see if you run into the same problem.......Just so you know, not all kernals are perfect and they have bugs depending on what hardware you have and what rom.....is a trial and error for me at least!..GOOD LUCK!!
Also, instead of a task manager, you can try Autostarts.

What will AUTOSTARTS do
Well I'm still having that problem, what can I do next, someone told that I could have bad hardware, if so how could someone know that they have bad hardware and how could.someone fix that, and could it be that I have a old recovery I'm running v1.8 right now, I just want my EVO back working right, can someone please help me who has had that problem.
so far i've tried mighty rom (fat and slow), energy rom(still fst and slow) and sharkie rom (reasonabhle but still not setup 100% and a bit slow).
all 3 have stability issues. requiring a reset at least once and often 2-3 times a week. itks very important that my phone does not lock up as i need the alarm and other things to work continuously.
any suggestions? so far i've only used windows 6.5.x roms as i like the start menu at the bottok. but would 6.5 or 6.1 be more stable?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144615
This ROM is available in two versions...wm6.5 and wm6.5.x....they're both as stable as all heck ...take your pick...I personally prefer 6.5 (21916)...but that's the case on anyones rom I'm using...I don't like the start key on the bottom...I like it on top, where it's supposed to be lol
The device will reboot itself after it starts up for the first time and it's suggested you restart twice afterwards....BUT...DON'T freak out after it restarts itself, it's a built in feature...also...you need to set your time in the windows settings not sense...and if you have any weather location issues, add your city, select it, and then remove it in the "remove locations" screen and you'll be good to go
Sergio76's Core Cell Evo
I recommend trying Sergio76's Core Cell Evo version 4.0 ROM. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=617142"
When you click on the download link, the file you want is "TP2 Core Cell Evo v4".
If you decide to install the ROM, click on the link in my signature and get the latest patch for this ROM. Follow the instructions provided on how to install the ROM and the patch and you will have the fastest ROM with the most stability and a lot of eye candy! Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
are there any differences between 6.5 and 6.5.x that affect speed or stability? or is it purely cosmetic?
what about 6.1?
6.5.x uses more ram

Would it be best to make a new thread in the CDMA section?

Yes. You need to post this request in the CDMA section.
I suggest Energy.RHODIUM.21916.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.DinikGlass.Jul.04. It has been extremely stable!! I have a custom made app for my job and it has always caused issues for me. With this version of NRG's rom I haven't had any issues!!
Love this ROM.
i'm trying the 21xxx build of titanium energy rom. It's a bit faster but still not snappy like my super oldschool nokia 2690. Anyway so far it has managed to freeze up once right after a phone call. If it freezes again i'll assume it's not the rom thats the issue. Though come to think of it it does seem to freeze up around the time someone calls
Could it perhaps have something to do with the phone part and not anything else? i'm running the latest sprint radio (2.32?) but before that was 1.96? and it still froze using that one. Also I do a task29 before each flash
I read a post somewhere suggesting that I force GSM and also the band as that may stop it freezing. But I can't seem to find a way to force 900mhz or 2100mhz?
Best asking in his thread for support on the ROM
Regards,
WC
