[Q] some apps laggy that should not be - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Hello,
first, sorry for my maybe bad englisch, i try my best and i hope thats the right forum!
so, i have problems with some apps. they shouldnt be laggy but they are.
after a factory reset, folder organizer was the first app i installed.
it runs very smooth, folders and icons show up immediately, everything's fine. but after installing some apps it becomes sluggish. folders are opening but icons show up to 2 seconds afterwards.
i uninstalled app by app to see if one of them is slowing down folder organizer.
at the end, folder organizer was the last app installed but there was no improvement -> still lagy. so its none of the apps i have installed.
has anyone an idea or a tip for me or am i the only one experiencing this issue?!
Galaxy S with JM5 (the same prob with JM2 and other firmwares)
greetings
WhatZitTooya

i think the problem is folder organiser itself. it's very sluggish. unless you keep opening the same folder, then i suppose it already cache it in memory then it open fast. but if you run other apps then come back to open it again, it become slow again.
i suggest you try App Organiser by the same developer. it is like lite version of Folder organiser but only organise apps -no bookmarks or contacts.
still slower than standard folders, but much faster than folder organiser when opening folders.

[Q] Installed app not appearing in program list

My roommate and I both have TP2's. We both have had trouble finding browsers that support flash. I found Iris browser, which works ok, and installed on my phone; unfortunately a short time later when I went to download it onto my roommates TP2 it was no longer available. So I sent the Iris files to his phone and installed them on his storage card under programs. Iris does not show up in the program list, but if I use file explorer to go to Iris files I can get to run from there. I guess I have two questions: First how can I get Iris to appear in the program list, hence shortcuts and second is there another browser out the that will support flash (we found Dorothty browser but have some issues with it). I'm sorry for such rudimentary questions as XDA has helped me a great deal. Thank you.
Try installing Iris browser from O Market. When I istalled it from O Market, it appears in start menu programs as normal.
Is it listed in your applications list? It should say "Torch Mobile Iris Browser" or something similar.

Excluding Folders from Gallery

I've tried the .nomedia method but that doesn't seem to work in ICS. Does anyone know how to prevent a folder from being shown in the Gallery app?
Thanks.
I'd be interested in a solution to this too, don't really want all my album art and images from games etc cluttering the gallery.
Either a method to exclude certain folders or one to only include certain ones would do.
Tried .nomedia as well for my icons folder... doesn't seem to work.
This is driving me nuts. I tried the .nomedia thing too before I found this post. This is such an oversight for the gallery app.. it's pulling all of the downloaded icons/images from my mail app..
i was having issues with gallery not displaying thumbs & even wouldn't open some files. i ended up looking for an alternative and found this:
QuickPic
it is working well and you can specify folders to include/exclude.
Thanks - just downloaded this as well. Should work until someone can find a fix to the .nomedia thing..
Does anyone know what the Scrapbook Photos folder is? I think it may have come from picasa or G+.. but mine is empty and cannot be deleted in the regular gallery.
after putting the .nomedia, try rebooting, or downloading "sdrescan" from the market (free). the android media scanner indexes your files, but its often slow and doesn't update unless the camera puts something there. chances are it just hadn't known there was a .nomedia sucks, they'll probably have a fix eventually

Unfortunately it seems that there are certain folders where .nomedia will never work. So far I've found this with the downloads folder. No amount of rescanning or rebooting will stop images in the downloads folder appearing in the gallery.
I found that creating a subfolder with a dot in front of it (ie, .stuff) inside the download folder, moving the images into this folder, then rescanning will work.
you guys are honestly just unlucky. .nomedia works perfect for me. i even have a .nomedia file in my music folder and it works.

It looked to me like Vaulty physically moves the selected files to a folder and renames them so they're 'protected' because when i tried it out (it did work) but the location where the files were was not empty in root explorer.

Been using this for a bit now. Seems to work really well.

I second QuickPic. I used to use it on my HTC Magic because it was too slow for the 3D galley and I've used it ever since. Very efficient, fast, and allows you to zoom in to 100%.
Why don't you guys just put a dot in front of whatever filer its in? So like if the folder was "Pix" then make it ".Pix"....
nomedia is working for me too
It seems that Gallery mostly respects hidden (.foldername) folders and the .nomedia flag, but some process is alerting the Gallery to new folders and files as they are created, and that process does NOT respect hidden folders or .nomedia.
If you believe your problem is solved with the nomedia app, I suggest you move a photo into your hidden and/or .nomedia-ed folder and see if Gallery does not show it afterwards.
The only workaround that I have found is to Force Stop the system app called "Media Storage", clear it's cache and reboot. When media storage runs again at startup you'll find .nomedia and hidden folders are treated correctly (i.e. ignored) again. Beware though, my ringtone and notification tones were reset and I suspect it was a side-effect of doing this.

Gallery not detecting new images?

I have kind of a weird bug with Gallery lately. Images saved to Downloads and Screenshots and Camera appear just fine, but I also have several folders for pictures, like a Wallpapers folder. But for some reason, when I move photos into those folders, Gallery never shows them. It refuses to change since the folders were created, basically.
I've cleared Gallery's cache and data and even deleted the cache in the /sdcard/Android folder, which has solved issues in the past with it. Not having any luck, any ideas?
Usually all that's needed to find any new media is to initiate a media rescan. A reboot will do that and there are free apps (e.g. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner&feature=search_result&hl=en) which can force a rescan, too.
Also make sure there is no ".nomedia" file in these directories.

Wow, I can't believe I overlooked something so obvious. I just installed that app and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
I think Quickpic also does this rescan, it always shows the media folders up to date...I find it generally faster and more reliable than stock galley, best of all its free and has no ads

Can Anyone Confirm?

I've been working with hiding images with .nomedia files for years, but at this point, I feel I have tried everything and I can't find a solution to my problem.
I have a bunch of epubs that are displaying coverart showing up in the Samsung default gallery app. I've tried adding the .nomedia files to the offending folders and wiping data for both gallery and media storage, but they continue to return. I've found on some tablet forums that they had had significant trouble, and the only way it would work would to be to make a new folder, put the .nomedia file in first, and then put the items into that folder. This also had no result.
I know some apps will selectively choose to ignore the .nomedia files. Is this default gallery app one of them? This is my first time using a Samsung phone with Touchwiz. I'm not sure what to do at this point, but I installed Quickpic, and they aren't showing up there. Rather not have to pass on the default app.
Thoughts?

Question [SOLVED] Screenshots Folder Disappears from Gallery App

I use the screenshot feature almost daily and it has been working fine until the other night. Suddenly, when I open the Gallery app, the Screenshots album shows no cover image, just a gray Gallery app icon, and then disappears within a split second. I cannot see or access it at all within the Gallery app, including from "All Albums" (though it is chosen to be on the front page). The folder and all the image files are still on my phone, as I can see them in My Folders and even open them from there in Gallery.
I thought maybe the folder got too many images in it, so I moved them to a different folder, but that didn’t work. I thought maybe the folder got corrupted, so I deleted it, but when I took another screenshot to have the phone create the folder again, it did not fix the problem. There was an update for my phone OS, so I updated, but that didn’t fix the problem.
Thanks for any help!
Try clearing the system cache...
I had the same problem, iirc it was solved during a flash/full wipe.
I also had a problem with every single image showing up... apart from the standard folders like screenshot.
With simple gallery at least, you can exclude folders. Or .nomedia

That's not solving it, it's nuking it. It may reoccur; always best to find to root cause. Only exceptions are after a major firmware upgrade, a boot loop, changes in hidden user settings, malware, etc. Poorly coded 3rd party apps can occasionally permanently alter hidden user settings if so it's important to not reload that app after a factory reset. Regardless back up all critical data now if it isn't...
There maybe a conflicting 3rd party app, try in safe mode. Try clearing the Gallery app data before a reset, maybe other Samsung system apps as well.
Play with it for at least a week or two before doing a factory reset for a minor issue like this.
Do some Google searches... you're likely not the only one that had this problem.

You're welcome. It's always worth a try and can clear bizarre behaviors. Zero risk. I do it about once every month or two as part of routine maintenance or if troubleshooting.
If you don't upgrade or update Android loads can be very long lived. One reason I advocate finding the root cause. This N10+'s last factory reset was in June 2020; still running fast and very stable. Zero malware on this load, still running on Pie.

Try in safe mode.
No apps were disabled using a Package Disabler or adb edits, right?
If global power management is active, turn it off.
Make sure all Samsung system apps have the permissions they need.
It's likely a settings issue... play with it. Androids wuv attention.

I downloaded a couple of other gallery apps to see if they saw the album/folder. One from Google did, but another from Google (the pre-installed one that I'd long-ago disabled) did not, and two other apps did. Only one had the ability to change the app cover pic, but that didn't affect the Gallery app from Samsung. So, I made the decision to Clear Data for the app even though I'd have to set up the albums again and lose everything in the Trash folder (I do sometimes undelete pics, especially, uhm, racy ones to share again before deleting them again ). I didn’t have to sign back in and it kept my sync settings with OneDrive, thankfully. Most importantly, it FIXED the problem with the screenshot folder! I just tried taking a random screenshot to make sure it would still work after and it did. Phew! It was annoying to set my albums on the first page up again (choose them and drag them in the order I want them in/most importance, like Snapseed and Screenshots in the top row with Camera and the Camera album from my previous phone) and lose the Trash, but worth it.
Thank you for the help!

Yay! Now you feel like an ace So much more rewarding than arbitrary doing a factory reset.
The question remains what caused it to happen.
If it reoccures try to remember the events before it manifested itself that may have caused it.
A scripted malware jpeg from a download can cause hell, damaging other files in the same folder. Deleting that jpeg will stop the damage. The trigger is opening the jpeg to view it; it will then damage other files in that folder. Some can be repaired easily if it just changed the file type suffix, other files have deeper damage. I hate these critters.
All downloads* especially jpegs and pngs should go to the download folder first. Open them there first before transferring anywhere else. Look for changes in other files in that folder.
May be the only way to spot these vermin. Antivirus apps may not ID them...
*Scan with online Virustotal any file that may warrant it before installing or moving out of the download folder. If there's any doubt, delete the file. Downloads are a known malware vector... delete any files you didn't download. Police the download folder daily. Scanning with Malwarebytes may tag infected files there too.

I only have screenshots in that folder, only sometimes moving some out to organize them (ex. relationship memes from Instagram in one folder, regular memes stay in the screenshots folder, random things I need to save to refer to go in a random-screenshots folder, house ideas go in another folder, etc.), never moving anything into it. Downloads are in the Downloads (with or without the "s", I forget which is the current one) folder, may or may not be moved or deleted depending on their use. I have an anti-virus app that runs all the time, tells me when anything installs (because it scans it), etc.

You really don't need antivirus running real time if using Android 9 or higher... unless you do stupid things. Android 9 is very robust and secure if used right. I run a logging firewall always, this is more useful than antivirus. Any app that doesn't require internet access to work is blocked.
I scan every couple weeks with free Malwarebytes and Trojan Scanner, that's it. In 3 years Malwarebytes tagged one trojan preloader that slipped through the Samsung browser. I would've spotted it anyway as I police the download folder almost daily. Almost all malware is user installed or downloaded.

That's just how it works, it runs all the time. Been using it for many years. Comes with my plan for my PC anti-virus program. Also has features to find a lost/stolen phone with a pic if someone tries to use it, tells you what apps have certain features like ads or access, etc. And tells you if anything installs (like, did you know Facebook updates itself multiple times a day?).

Did it ever find any serious Android malware like a trojan preloader?
FB, WhatsApp, any social media, sales apps are either package blocked if bloatware or never installed. The firewall prevents any updating mischief. Even and especially Samsung updates are blocked.

You see why I said what I said?
Real time antivirus slows the Android and wastes valuable resources in doing so.
Manually scanning downloads and apps to be side loaded with online Virustotal yields better results and uses far less resources.

It does scan apps before installing them if they are not from trusted sources, and scans updates/new installs as well. You can also manually scan all apps and all files. Among other features (which apps use which permissions, etc.). Definitely not slowing my phone at all. Even auto-updates downloading and installing doesn't slow this phone, unlike my previous one. I don't even notice anything installed until I see the anti-virus notification that an app updated, so was scanned.
The Screenshots album disappeared again this afternoon, ugh! At least I know how to fix it, but spending time to choose the front-page albums and put them in the order I need them in isn't something I wanted to do again. I don't know if the size of the folder/album is what is causing the problem or not, so I moved all but 32 of the latest screenshot images to a new album. Here's hoping it won't happen again! (And yes, I did a scan of my phone after, and no viruses.)

Duration of unused files in My Files is set to what? Double all Gallery settings.
Virustotal gives better oversight to make an informed decision. OTA upgrades and auto updates can and do break things. Samsung's will run well without them.
Just because a virus scan finds nothing it doesn't mean there is nothing. If it's an undetected scripted jpeg it's going to be a whole lot of "fun".
