Droid 2.2(froyo) - wifi tether is it possible ? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, does it possible to upgrade to droid 2.2 and use or set wifi tether without rooted
I possible please let me know

Dude, you're all over the place.
No, without root you can't wifi tether on 2.2. But why on Earth would you flash a non-rooted ROM anyway? I think you just need a new ROM. Go back to your first thread (about the Android Market) and answer TheBiles' question. You don't need to start a new thread for every thought that pops into your head when you haven't even solved your first problem.

You know what, let's stop here. I just looked at your post history. You have 16 posts total, and 8 threads you've started since yesterday. FOUR of them are on the front page right now. You've started a new thread every time you have a question at the end of your previous thread. It's okay to just keep asking for help on one issue until you've solved it. It's less okay to make a new thread and bump other peoples' questions down the page (or onto the next page) of the forum.
Pick your favorite thread and stick with it.

before i update to black 2.5 i hope these programs will still work.any FeedBackplease

i really want to upgrade to wm 6.
my htc tytn does seem to run slugish with wm 5.(i have done some updates)
i use the USA cingular network
rom 1.18.255.3
radio 1.35.00.11
protocol ver 32.68.7020.10h
extrom ver 1.18.255.106.
i have done a lot of searching on the forum and have seen some programs have problems. some of these have fixes like slingbox.
i want to make sure that these programs will work after the black 2.5 upgrade. so far black 2.5 seems to be the main one people like.
here is a list of programs i am worried about.
any feed back would be great.
thanks
1.sling box. (will all ver of sling box work witht the patch? what made it stop working? would that effect any other programs?)
2.tomtom ver 6 (i really hope this works still)

If you actually took the time to read for a while you'd know that with any ROM some apps will be buggy, and then along comes some fixes. Stick with WM5. If you don't have time to investigate what you're getting into, don't waste your time flashing a new ROM unless you know before-hand that you're gonna run into problems. How about this. Try a ROM, add the apps you want. If you run into problems work through them like EVERYONE else, because your configuration wont be the same as someone else's, and IF YOU TOOK THE TIME TO READ THREADS you'd already know what apps are buggy with WM6, and the ones not listed you can add if you experience a problem. That's how the whole problem/fix thing works. Sorry. I'm just sick of these threads everyday from people wanting to know some magical setup or which ROM is TEH BESTEST cause they just want a finished product and don't care about the learning process. When you make the jump to flash your device, you become a "tester" like everyone else. It's not rocket science, but it's not finger paints either.

ronfin44,
i "READ" the posts i know there are bugs.(hence the question on the programs)
why would i risk a bricked phone or waste any extra time if some one else has already found out the needed info. most of the programs i asked about are some what common. it would not be so crazy to think there are a few people here that have tried and have some feed back.
based on the feed back i will decide if i want to go farther.
is it too much to come up with a risk analysis before committing to a project?
my god if asking for some feed back on a small list was such a sin why even have a forum.
"Risk annalysis". When you decide to do something like this there's a risk, but an app that may not be "buggy" for one, may be "buggy" for another. Try 2.5, load your apps, and see if everything runs fine. It's usually not the apps that cause problems but the development of the ROM, ie a ton of fixes that follow once one has been released. The apps with a history are posted ALL over this forum. If you haven't seen any of yours then why not try the ROM and see? It's not magic. If you run into a problem, post it and we'll help ya work it out. The forum gets cluttered with so many threads asking questions that could be answered by hanging around and doing a lot of reading and using the search feature. I know the search function isn't perfect, but it works.
Advice; load 2.5, load your apps. Good luck. If you run into some problems, check the 2.5 thread FIRST for an answer, if not, POST IN THAT THREAD about the problems you're having with THAT ROM and people will be happy to help. It just keeps the forum cleaner.
I can report that IM+ 4.3 works without crashes or any downtime, although it drains the battery like a mofo (didn't on WM5), it works 1000x better than it ever did on my 8125 with WM5.0.
Edit: other versons of im+ 4.9 ect. will crash / lock up your hermes on WM6.0 roms so be aware you MUST use 4.3 or higher.

Rooting?

Could anyone point me to the correct tutorial to root your HTC Touch Pro 2 ?
I'v been reading up on the android builds past few days. I'm totally new to this.
I got android to work with the project android build. And i want to use Whatsapp.
But it won't let me open Whatsapp. 3rd party task manager is killing it. So i guess its ATK ? But i can't just uninstall it trough settings>applications etc. Same trough android market. I read somewhere you'd have to root it then. But i don't know how. Any help would be appreciated alot !!!.
If i'm not suppose to post this, because i haven't looked or w/e, fine delete this. But i did look. And if been reading alot of topics and iv seen alot of flaming just because of asking a question. might have been a stupid one, but still, people just want some help. Why not help out ? We all start somewhere. And im starting right here. haha.
Oh and if im totally off map by saying rooting, let me know how i can get whatsapp to work. Iv seen it works for others so im just waiting to fix mine. haha.
Anyway, great job on the forum and great builds for TP2.
Peace,
from the spacestronaut.
It is already rooted. Next time spend some time reading

well you didnt search enough nor read enough...and i started by reading and searching (only 2 posts in first year as member)
Like i said before, i did search the past few days, and i did read, but its not like theres a topic out there called "TP2 rooting". Or "how to get rid of preinstalled apps". So cool it. And help me out. That would be greatly appreciated it. i knew i shouldn't expect a mature response...

Well that's the problem, XDAndroid is rooted - but don't expect every app that works on native Android phones to work on these - this isn't exactly an approved or sanctioned port.

im not using the XDandroid build, im using the project android build. And i read somewhere in order for whatsapp to be working you need to get rid of ATK by rooting your phone and then get rid of the app (ATK). So, some are saying it should be rooted. And it's not like no one is running whatsapp on a HTC android mod. it should be working. but i can't seem to get rid of ATK. iv read other could just get rid of it trough settings>applications but i can only delete the updates. Please some real anwsers instead of saying things i allready know.
Hey,
first of all welcome to the xda-developers forum...
like u and i guess everyone i hate answers like some of the ones you got..
i think a froum is made to ask questiuons however that might be about...
and it took me month back in my old htc kaiser days to get the whole android thing.
so when you want to install apps that are not from the store then u have to check one checkbox first.
ull find it under settings->applications-> and there should be a checkbox that says unsigned apps or untrusted apps...something like that.
normally this page should pop up if u click on a app that u have on the sd card...
i hope that is what u asked for...
and the phone is already rooted whatever build u are using
and if u have any questions but dont want to ask them in the forum cuz u might think that u get answers that dont suit ure question just pm me

I know how to install unsigned and untrusted apps. But now i want to get rid of it. haha. Anyway, i shoot you a message maybe tomorrow to explain more i guess. A mod can close this, as i proberly won't get a straight answers anyway.

Do you even know what you're talking about? ATK hasn't been included in any builds for a while, and what do you mean you're not using XDAndroid you're using the "project android build" - this makes me think you have NO clue what you're talking about. Please, prove me wrong.

Your right, i don't know, that's why im asking... smh at the ignorance at this forum.
hey,
ok now i got what ure asking...
so then it is important what method u are using? do you have a system.ext2 file that you load with haret?
or do you have a partioned sd card with the android system on a ext2 partition.
when you have the whole system in a system.ext2 file you would need to unpack it, delete the .apk of the app, and then pack it into a .ext2 file again...
when you have the second method that just browse into the folder system/apps/ and delete the file...
that should work for every normal app but it is not easy to do it...

Well you certainly answered my questions with a confidence only stupidity can be responsible for.
FYI, there's a difference between ignorance & stupidity. Ignorant people just don't know. Stupid people know, but are willingly ignorant. You have all the information available to, yet you insist on being ignorant.
It's OK to ask questions - but if it has been answered before, answering the same questions over and over again gets old. So some of us will respond a little less amicably than others - 9 times out of 10, this was because the OP didn't do their due diligence.

I just sent you a pm. i don't load anything, i start winmo, open up, project android, hit boot, android starts... that's all i do. i don't have a system.ext2 file on my sd. if this method is "wrong" or dated, let me know where to get the newest build. seems like that is the problem ?
hm...so you have to have some files that are behind that...
and i would think that you have a system.ext2 file somewhere...
should be in the andboot folder on your sd card.
but in builds that are used now here that task manager you want to get rid of isnt used anymore...so i would suggest just try the xdandroid build and kernels or the neopeek version which is very fast and you have all files on a spare partition on your sd card.
if you want to get started with the neopeek build just check neopeek.com and then the forum. there are all the build he has developed and instructions how to install. if u have any questions about that just let me know...
i guess art your point it would be the easiest to switch to another build

Listen, i understand your point of view. Iv been reading up on alot of threads in the Touch Pro 2 section. And i saw alot of normal questions being asked. And there was alot of flaming just because of those questions. That's disrespect in my opinion. Because you guys now, just point a newb to the right place. I mean it's not that hard... or is it ? Believe i do understand it though. But it doesnt hurt to be a bit more helpfull. Im willing to learn. I signed up because i wanted to participate and learn. That might not have been in my OP but im sure you understand by now, i do want to learn. And to be honest, alot of those frequently asked questions aren't in the provided tutorials or aren't easy findable. Wich makes it totally legit to ask a question. Forgive me for not reading 1000 pages of a thread. I only wanted a quick response to my question. A url to the right place to continue to search for a fix. and to learn. not to piss you guys off. Because it's allready been done about a million times. Again, i do understand your attitude, but give a new guy a chance to learn.

I guess if your whole issue is ATK, then just use a newer build. I don't think ATK has been included in any of the 2.2 builds, but it hasn't been in a build for a while. So I'm guessing your build is old if you still have ATK on there.

its a double-edged sword this kinda thing, because its easy for both sides it is just tedious and requires an abnormal amount of patience which some of us (like myself) have little of to begin with
also there are times, like this, that a noob cant simply be pointed in the right direction
all that said i agree with nick, just use xdandroid for tp2 especially since that is what the people around here are most accustomed to
So I am new with the Android world.
I got Blazn up and running, but that's all where I am at lol.
So i see all those extra information that I am not knowledgeable about (not ignorant so people don't start flaming) , so I am going to call myself a NOOB when it comes to Android and learning bit by bit everyday.
So long story short, You guys got WhatsApp up and running properly?
Because I heard back in the 2.1 eclair , WhatsApp was not working correctly.
If working, what alterations have you guys done to make it run (if any needed).

[Q] Unlocking the New HTC EVO android 2.2

I know, I know, I know...
I am a member of a few different forums for other things and there is always a neb that comes on and asks a question that has been beat to death.
I have heard that God kills a kitten ever time someone post a thread before doing a search on what you are trying to get answered. So for my sake, God's sake and that poor kitten sake, I did read through a lot of post before I had the sack to post this question
I am posting this question because there seems to be a lot of different answers to a lot of different questions, so, I was hoping for very direct answers to these questions that I know have been asked plenty of times...
Here it goes...
I have purchased the HTE EVO w/ android 2.2 and I have had it for about 2 weeks.
I want to root my phone, which is my first ever smart phone.
This is what I would like to happen...
1) I want to be able to have the restore point so that I can flash my phone back to stock so that if something happens the warranty will still be good.
* Does this save on my home pc or sdcard? Or Both?
I have read that you need to download here not there(ruu...clockworks/rom manager)...no here not there...If you download anything but this you will not be able to get it back to the stock setting and Sprint will know you have rooted the phone...The whole thing started to get a little confusing.
I am a very simple person so I am hoping for a very simple answer, if there is one.
1) How do I root my HTC EVO that has the android 2.2?
2) How do I make sure that I can have a recovery point incase I mess it up (brick, etc...)
3) How do I make sure that I can flash my phone back to the original settings just incase I have to send it in to be fixed for some reason, which rom manager lets me do this?
4) Is it legal to do this?
5) What might be the biggest no-no to do before, during and after you root your phone?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
MOD Edit:
Moved to Evo 4 Area
Cheers,
M_T_M
PS: The kitten does not suffer though

Why would you bother with a closed thread...? It's obviously going to have outdated/bad info.
The sticky's are there for a reason... they have the most up-to-date info.
Still having some issues with urs so was looking for a different one!
My biggest concern is on the lock screen it Says Voice Stream not Tmobile. I hope it doesn't have me as roaming

What issues? Post in the thread of the build you're running. No need for a new thread... I know you already posted in the GB thread, I recommend starting with FroYo, mainly because it's more updated than the GB build. Less things are broken in FroYo basically .
Anyhoo, for GSM we display whatever the tower broadcasts. If your provider hasn't updated the towers, we can't do anything about it. VoiceStream no longer exists as a company, so I think you're fine lol.

Google Play/Market wont work

Anyone knows how do i get Google Play/Market to work on my phone.
I get a message that i have to create an account.
Here's my story.
Flashed 7.1 for the very first time on my Desire and worked like a charm until i started on Google Apps.
I downloaded the version CyanogenMod 9 on the SD card and installed.
On the first attempt i did not get any Google Application except for the Google Play/Market.
I could not use it because it kept on throwing Sever Error. I installed Market Enabler as a fix but uninstalled it because it did not figure out how to use it.
I then hard rebooted the phone, cleared Dalvik Cache and re-installed the CyanogenMod 9 (Google Application package again). I did not get any lock screen but this time it installed Facebook and Twitter. There was no Google e-mail available so i could not use market again.
The third time i used CyanogenMod7. Installation was painless but as soon as the phone shows the lock screen it went back to the loading screen with Android icon.
The fourth time i tried CyanogenMod9 again but this time i only got Google Play/Market.
I used 5 presious hours yesterday and had to roll back to the original ROM because i could not get the Market to work.
Reply in the right section and you might get a decent reply, this is development only. you need to put it in Q/A section or in the thread for the rom you used.
Wrong section. Reported.
Don't post here anymore - it's no use bumping this to the top of the forum, only annoying.
As for you, OP - you're an I-D-I-D-O-T-H.

A little respect wouldn't go amiss. (as your here to 'help' as your sig says). The poster above you said all that needed to be said.
Erm - if I was going to infract the OP for posting in the wrong section, I would definitely infract the rest of you for flaming.
This is very simple: report the post. Do not reply. Do not flame. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. Let me deal with 'training' the user to post in the correct forums - that's my job.
To the OP, some guidelines:
1. do not post in Development.
2. if you have to ask, 'should this go in development?' the answer is almost always no.
3. when in doubt, see rule 2, and post it in General. If it belongs in Development, it'll get moved.
Posting in Development is like true love - when it happens, you'll know!
A bit lame but I hope that helps.
Who the hells Erm?
kite edit: just my personal take on "um" or "uh".
Back on topic!
