Newest fresh radios/kernals and setting up Amon Ra Flash - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I followed the guide to root my phone that was titled "Idiot proof root quide" that can be found on the androidforums. I then installed fresh 0.3 and I've been running that for a while and had no desire to flash the new fresh roms. Well, now that fresh has released a ROM with froyo at its base I've decided to make the jump.
Yesterday I downloaded and installed the latest rom from fresh (3.1.0.1) but I was unaware that there were new radio updates and kernals to install. This is where I'm running into trouble. For some reason when I have 3.1.0.1 installed my phone wont stay connected to the computer. Once I plug the USB cord in it will ask me if I wan't to charge, disk drive, etc but then 2 seconds later it will disconnect. I've gone back to fresh 0.3 and it works fine.
SO, my questions are:
1. How do I install the latest radio for fresh (please help me with links, I've looked but have become easily frustrated)
2. How do I install the latest kernal with Amon Ra flash (it is my understanding that you need this to install the newest radio/kernal). I understand I need fastbook and the android SDK but I don't think I'm setting these two applications up correctly when I download them.
If you can direct me to any threads that will assist me I will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

another way you can try is putting the radios on before you flash the rom to fresh3. I would flash using AMon Ra just because there have been reports of clockwork not fully clearing cache/dalvik. The best way to do this in my opinion is if you have rom manager installed at the bottom you will find flash alternate recovery, use that then try clearing wiping everything and reflashing. If you put the radios on your sd card first jsut boot into froyo once then power down flash radio boot, power down flash wimax. boot.
then try and see if you usb is still having problems. If it is let us know.

Download the radios and kernels you want with your phone, then reboot into recovery. All of them flash like ROMs, just select the zip you want and flash it. Just don't wipe first.
I think the order would be kernel first, then radio, then WiMax if necessary. Always reboot at least between radio and WiMax, maybe after kernel as well.

No need a custom Kernel for now, the ROM has its own, if you want a Kernel anyways you can flash Netarchy's Revision 3.7.6c - Froyoized but it has a side effects with the camera pixels!

3 out of 5? lol

Wow, thank you for the quick responses guys/gals! So it seems that I was making this more difficult than it needs to be.
Summary of what I need to do:
1. Flash new kernel if I choose to but each ROM comes with a custom kernel.
2. Flash new radio update.
3. Flash Wimax update.
4. Flash fresh 3.1.0.1
Now, I hope this also solves my USB issue that I'm having which only occurs when I have 3.1.0.1 flashed. I'm going to take omegasun18's advice and see if that will correct my issue.

well i would do it ......
Fresh rom + radio, the reboot, wimax, then reboot again, then kernel, that's waht i did and have everything working no 30fps cap, wi fi tether and all the stuff (remember about the camera issue)
*edit* remember something, you have to left the custom kernel to the end, because as i told you before the rom has its own kernel and will overwrite any other you installed previously

So leave the kernel to the end? Does that kernel you recommended remove the 30fps cap?

yep make sure if you do a kernal you do it AFTER the rom. the radios shouldnt matteer since msot roms dont acctually change the radios when flashed. but i normaly start with the rom and work my way up but otherwise you have it.

What do I do now?

Okay, first timer here and I have a few questions. I just completed rooting my phone via Simple Root. My build number is now 1.17.651.1.
My questions are as follows:
1) Now that I am rooted, what installation files can I delete from my SD Card?
2) I see that I need to do a recovery flash, do I do this immediately? What one do you recommend?
3) After I do the flash, are there any others files I need to install before I do a custom rom?
4) Which custom rom do you recommend?
5) Am I leaving anything else out that I forgot?
Thank you so much in advance!

After you have rooted you can delete nearly anything you want, I wouldn't suggest doing it because I doubt you know what to do. But you do have the freedom to..
I would suggest you flash a recovery as soon as possible. It makes life easier. The two most common recovery are Amon Ra And clockwork.. I use amon Ra just because it had a better wipe feature but clockwork is used in rom manAger (look in to it).
After rooting you can look into upgrading your radio and your wimax and your kernal.
Custom roms are like sneakers, They all have different purpose and size. The most common ones are damagedcontrol and fresh. Do your research and experiment and find your sneaker. You can also just wait til the official stable cm6 comes out. For now I use fresh.
Try oUt some themes and different apps that are for rooted devices only. And there us always something neiw to do with your evo.

I am in the same boat as OP. I managed to make my way through SimpleRoot. But I am having a heck of a time digging through the forums to figure out what to do next. I feel like kind of an idiot, but I have no idea how to set up my backup/recovery "amon ra" right? And then I'd like to install the rooted 1.47 build and update my radio and wimax. Any direction would be VERY appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. Mind pointing me in the right direction for the radio kernel and wimax?
I'm new to this too. Read up a lot first. Easy root looks to make it pretty easy, but I learned more doing it the hard way. Used the two part method in dev section, by toast I think, with adb, nand unlock and all. Helps to understand the odd file structure, and what different parts do. You have to try things too, and just hope you don't f up. Using cm6 now and its pretty cool. Have fun man.

What's wrong with Clockwork's wipe feature?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734564&highlight=clockwork
Also, as for flashing a recovery, if you install ROM Manager from the market, it will give you an option to flash either Clockwork or Amon RA. It will stay there even if you flash new ROMs later, though there's a quirk where a new ROM Manager install will ask you to flash recovery, but then if one is already there it won't really change it, it just needs to see it to believe it.
Installing new files won't make a difference if you switch ROMs. It wipes your data when you re-flash, so you'll lose it all anyway (unless you back up your apps with Titanium Backup or MyBackup). All you need is a recovery installed - and I actually recommend Clockwork, but only because I use it myself and I have no problems with it - and you can reboot into it, install a new ROM, and start playing. I've never flashed from ROM Manager, even though it gives the option, but I imagine it does the same thing, but runs it automatically after a recovery reboot.
Read the "favorite ROM" thread with the poll attached, lots of good ROM recommendations in there. I'll say it once more: I'm using Fresh 1.0.1 and netarchy's 3.7.3c kernel (Fresh-compatible version). It's so fast and smooth.
If you like your current setup but want to try a new ROM, use ROM Manager (or Clockwork as a recovery reboot) to do a Clockwork backup. That way you can return to your current state if you want to. It's basically a system image that you can restore.
Here's one helpful page to start with.
And have fun.
Back on fresh 0.5.3, clockwork was not doing a great job with the wipe, causing the boot to loop. I believe it wasn't completely wiping the dalik cache.

So i just did the 3 step root and im at the clockwork mod recovery screen
There is different stuff to choose and i have no clue what to select?
Can someone please direct me to what to do next this is my first android phone and i have no idea how to load a rom or what i should be doing next
thanks in advance
Well are you hoping to flash a custom ROM? If so, you'll need to download the ROM and copy it to the root of your SD card. Then when you boot to recovery, choose the options to wipe data, wipe cache, and then install a zip from SD. If you want to back up your phone, choose the Nandroid option.
You got pretty far without knowing how to complete your journey.
so if i click nandroid that will back up what my phone is set at now?
what is a good custom rom to use ?
I would like to have wifi tether but do not have 4g and probly wouldnt use it very often, i read something that there was a stock rooted rom? I also do not want to lose my camera?
Start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Evo_ROMs
Then just read up on the dev pages/threads for the popular ROMs. I use Fresh 1.0.1 with the netarchy 3.7.3c Fresh-compatible kernel (haven't switched to the new one that just came out today). Camera works great, wifi tether app is built-in. If you want that, download both (just search here), put them on your SD card, reboot to recovery, and flash the ROM, then the kernel. You don't have to flash a new kernel or even radio if you don't want to, but everything is installed the same. Usually reading a couple of pages for each ROM will tell you if there are an problems. Other options are the stock rooted ROM, DamageControl, Baked snack, or there are a couple of new ones for Froyo as well, but they have some features left out (like 4G, wifi, MMS . . . depends on the ROM).
Nandroid (or, inside Android, ROM Manager) will make a system image for you, saving everything exactly as it is. To restore, boot to recovery and choose the correct options for that. Should be pretty self-explanatory.
Always wipe data and cache before flashing, and it's a good idea to search Google for Cyanogen's recommendations for recalibrating your battery (it's on his wiki). Just don't flash a stock, non-rooted ROM or any OTA updates that Sprint tries to push on you. Always get something that the devs here say is safe for rooted phones.
Hope that clears some things up for you.

Safe way to change ROM

Currently have the Modaco R3 ROM which i installed a while ago but now looking to install the Modaco Froyo ROM.
When i first changed the ROM, it was done via this way, http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/
But i have now been told that i can safely do it via ROM manager. Is this correct?
Here is a link to it, http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...d-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/
I presume i just copy the ROM file to the SD and select it via ROM manager? Also is it ok if i untick WIPE DATA AND CACHE as i dont want to loose anything?
thanks
Think i may have found my answer, http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/07/how-to-upgrade-your-desire-to-stock-android-2-2-froyo/

If the ROM you want to install uses a higher version of the radio you have installed, you should also flash it in order to fully enjoy your new ROM without problems.
You can check which version of radio you have by turning on the HTC using the power and volume - buttons at the same time.
Thanks, all sorted now. Used ROM manager which was really easy.

[Q] I just rooted my evo and need help updating because im new to this stuff

Hello and sorry for the inconvenience. I'm new to rooting and updating my evo. I have 2.2 android version since i rooted my evo and i rooted it with unrevoked 3. Now i keep getting updates from my phone but cant install them because im rooted. I was wondering how can i update my evo to the latest android version which is 2. something and how can i also update the latest fota version that's 3.70.
I don't know if i need to install a new ROM or get the update online. Your help would be grateful and thanks in advance.
You have to flash updated roms to keep your phone updated...thats the only way AFAIK
Any custom rom will get rid of the update notifications, and all are based on the newest OTA by now. I think the only 2.3 gingerbread rom is the CM7 nightly, which is very stable and very nice
Before you flash a new rom you will want to make sure you have one of the custom recoveries, RA for example is what i use for my flashing.
What Radio and software are you running?
software 2.2 and what do you mean by radio, basebad or kernel
Have you checked your phone to be sure you have S- off? There is a Rom in the developers section that has the latest OTA 3.70... but I do concur with the guys above in that you need to flash a custom Rom.
Go to the market and download Rom Manager. By using unrevoked I believe you now have clockworkmod as your custom recovery. And I'm pretty sure it would b version 2.6.0.1 which is the good one. By using Rom Manager you can flash a custom Rom directly through the app. My favorite is by far Cyanogen 6.1.2. The only downside is 4g isn't currently working. But the upsides by far outway that issue.

thanks and as we speak im doing a nandroid back up and want to know out of
myn's and calk's
which one is the best and if both of them work with 4g and i wanted to know if i do a nandroid backup will all my apps and contacts be deleted?
Both are good ROMs but every time I go try out a new ROM, I always go back to Calk's. I like it best but that's just my personal opinion. Once you feel comfortable flashing try them all out. I would reccomend using titanium back up to back up all of your apps though so when you flas a new ROM you can easily recover all your apps.
thanks and will it erase all my contact when i flash a new rom?? cause i already did an nandroid backup. and i want to download calks. SO whats my next step here. does calk work with 4g since i have htc evo 4g. sorry because im an amateur and dont know that much about this
Yes your contacts will be erased but once you log back in with your google acct they will resync. Yes, Calk's Rom supports 4G.
Download Calk's format all (not necessary but just something I personally use) & install it to root of the SD card
http://www.mediafire.com/?ikylelx99c49133
Same with the ROM, DL it to SD card root
reboot into recovery (vol down & power)
Factory wipe
Wipe Dalvik
Install zip from SD Card
Calk's format all
EViO v1.8
After it's done installing the phone will appear to hang a the splash screen This is normal for a first boot after a flash just let it do it's thing. It will eventually come up, I promise.
Enjoy your new ROM
one more thing and sorry to bother you how can i make sure all my contacts are with my gmail account

New Gingerbread Update Question

Okay, Please don't say, "USE THE SEARCH" because i have.. and i've read through countless and countless number's of pointless posts and i'm still really confused..
I am currently rooted and running stock rom with nerarchy's kernal
I want to update to the new gingerbread that was released, but i do not want to lose my root, i know the thread in the android development is just the regular OTA copy of the gingerbread update and that i will lose my root if i use that, but i'm sure by now someone has rooted the update, so can someone point me to the link of the new ROOTED gingerbread update?
Also i see there is a new radio and kernal .. so can someone give me complete instructions on how to fully install the new rooted update, and how to flash the radios/kernals after i flash the new gingerbread rom?
Do i just boot into my clockwork recovery (or do i need to use amron ra?) and then flash zip from sd and then flash the rooted gingerbread update like i would any other rom? Then after i flash that, just flash the radio the exact same way as i flashed the update? do i need to do a full wipe or just the delvik and regular cache? And also the kernal, do i need to flash that seperately or does that get included when i flash the .zip of the gingerbread stock rom?
I'm really confused as you can see, so if anyone could give me full step by step directions for finding, downloading and fully installing from start to finish everything that i need to download and flash and how to do it CORRECTLY i would be greatly appreciative..
Please note that i AM currently rooted and running a custom kernal, and i have previously flashed MIUI and MYN'S rom Before so i DO know how to flash things.
Thank you in advance to whoever finds the time to help me!
Basically just need pointed to all the correct Rooted downloads,
OK, the ROM, is simple. Download it, put it on your SD Card, reboot to recovery, wipe everything, and flash it, then let it reboot and you're good.
I use Amon Ra, so I'm not familiar with Clockwork, but I think the wipe process is not as complete with that recovery, so you MAY want to search for Calkukin's Wipe All.
The RADIOS, are not much different, and again I'm coming from Amon Ra, but in the Dev section, near the middle of the page ,look for the Calkukin's Thread for updated radios, wimax, PRI, etc and d/l the combo zip.
Put that on your SDCard, reboot to recovery, no need to wipe, and flash it.
I prefer to use a flashable zip file over a pc36img.zip for radios.
HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART!!!!
When it flashes, it will ask you to reboot pretty quickly, do that, and it will go to a black screen wit ha green circle/arrow and sit there for a few minutes.
Do not touch it. Do not pull the battery, do nothing.
Then it will reboot back to recovery. When you get the menu option to reboot your phone, after it formats cache, reboot, and it will take an few extra minutes to boot up, but then you're good.
Possibly clockwork mod may be slightly different, but in a nutshell, that's it.
You didn't post any links to where i can download the new ROOTED version of the OTA gingerbread update that came out on June 4th
I need a link to the ROOTED gingerbread stock ROM
and a link to the new Kernals and Radios..
and you're saying to just flash the updated rom like any other rom? full wipe then flash... and after i flash the rom, not to reboot, but to immediately flash the kernal and then the radio also ?
and after i flash the radio last, wait for it to finish and it will take me back to recovery after a few minutes, and then to reboot?

after you install the rom, select the option "reboot now." after that you will need to boot back into recovery mode and flash the kernel and reboot again. then go into hboot and flash your radios. make sure the radio zip is named PC36IMG so that your phone will auto detect the file and install it.

I then flash the radio and wait a few minutes for it to finish and reboot again.. correct? did i miss anything here? because i'm going to follow what i just said verbatim, so if anythere there is wrong or missing a step please let me know..
Do i need to flash a kernal at any point? or just the rom and radio?
The rom has the kernel with it after you reboot after you flashed tge rom just flash the combo and you should be good to go. If you want to flash a new kernel make sure you have a compatible gingerbread one.

You are correct on everything you posted.
Just remember the radios part is crucial you do not pull the battery.
When you flash it, it will tell you to use the menu to reboot. So reboot, and it will go to a black screen wit ha green circle with an arrow in it. This will sit there for a few minutes. Don't worry about how long, because this is the critical point. Just let it sit, then it will reboot and go back to recovery.
It will say formatting cache...
When the menu pops up that you can use to reboot the phone, do that. Reboot to system and it will take a little longer than normal to boot up, because your caches were formatted.
IF something goes wrong, and it won't but just in case, don't do anything before coming here and reporting what is happening.
I'm not trying to sound overly dramatic, but this is where people make mistakes.
I've flashed radios several times no problem, as have many of us.
Remember patience is key!
that's correct. your decision on the kernel and radio.

bump, before i flash this can someone verify this for me?
Here is my understanding in steps
1.) Boot into recovery and do a FULL wipe
2.) Select option to flash zip from sd card
3.) flash the gingerbread-update-rom.zip
4.) After flash finishes reboot and fully run the rom
5.) reboot into recovery again

wow im really impressed theres no flaming here haha.. yeah that about it.. on a side note you really should make a backup before you do this....
You said "Wow i'm really suprised theres no flaming here"
Yet i dont understand why there would be flaming?
Why would someone talk **** and flame me because i'm trying to learn and be 100% completely sure of what i'm doing before i attempt to flash something to my very very expensive phone?
At least i'm taking steps to go above and beyond rather than just half-reading something and thinking i'm smarter than everyone else and bricking my phone for good.
If someone is seriously trying to learn and feel safe and secure in what they're doing why would someone flame them?
Just my opinion... The only time someone should be flamed is when they are given links to pages where they can find their answers and they just want someone to flat out walk them through it and hold their hand rather than search and find the answers themselves...
There's no flaming here because he wasn't asking the typical overly repeated questions.
And when it comes to flashing a new radio, knowing that bad things can happen, it's important that a first timer know everything involved. The steps, the issues that can occur, etc.

Are these the properly named files to use?
For gingerbread-update-rom.zip I would use: supersonic_4.22.651.2_deodexed_060511-signed-.zip
For radio.zip I would use EVO_Radio_2.15.00.05.02_WiMAX_27243_PRI_2.15_003
???
Here's the links to the files you want.
The ROM:

The Radios, flashable version in Recovery which I like better than the PC36IMG version:
