[Q] Point of all these different ROMs? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't get it... Why are there so many ROMs? Shouldn't there just be a few based on certain core changes? Are most of the changes in the ROMs just based on the applications that are shipped with it?
I personally want a barebones install so I can install what I want and not have to worry about what other people like.
I'm just confused as to why there are so freaking many in the ROMs section. There should be a poll about which ROMs are the fastest that's constantly updating with their new releases.

Different ROMs focus on different things like performance, battery life, appearance and all kinds of other things there is nothing to complain about when you're offered a choice on these things

I'm not trying to complain, but it's a LOT to sift thru when you're new to the EVO. Why can't they all be combined into one super ROM (with great performance and battery life).

To provide choice.

And shouldn't they just make, like, a couple of different cars? One for highway, one for city, one for soccer practice . . . ?
Having options is why I like Android and Linux over, say, Apple. I like to play, I like to tweak, and I like freedom.
EDIT: I know it's a stretch, but I just love this:

You can always design your own... I am just happy for all the hard works these guys and gals put into this...Thanks

the definitive answere

hi all,
ive been part of this forum for a while and have took an avid interest in modding my diamond and filling it with cool apps & games
but...
i have tried lots and lots of roms and can not find anything to suit my needs as it were, and looking about there dont seem to be a decent list of pros and cons or special adaptions or mods
personally i would like a fast rom with a modded tf3d to be faster and can change tabs, semo decent battery, like 2 days with normal use. decent selection of apps and games and tools and the touch circle to be used in all apps to zoom, rotate or scroll things
if people could contribute the top ten roms with a list of pros and cons, not tech specs but real world usage speed, bugs, glitches, annoyances
hope this becomes useful at some point, will edit post when it needs to be updated
pretty tough to say just like that.. what ROMs have you tried? but basically if you know specifically what you want, the best thing is set up your settings and registry keys to be reinstalled using UC or Sashimi or something... then you find a base ROM that has the main stuff you want, and you put your tweaks on to get the perfect ROM
oouh, thats new.
ähm sorry, you are new, welcome.
i have a little problem to choose words for your question,
but you give a hard rule for human resources.
i love nice girls in ferrari. you too?
i love more girl than ferrari.
i love more more ferrari than girl.
i love beatle more than ferrari and/or girl.
what i write here...? i want say, that i definitiv change my oppinion during
writing this unorganized letters. what today is definitiv is tomorow definitv-old!
that what you want exists only in your brain. definitiv...
try page two and you will get a little bit feeling, for what the most people here posting. nokia is good.
I mean give us a really chance to give you a good answer
okokur, cheers mate for your umm, well not usre what it was really,
i was only trying to get a real world guide type thing to see how roms perform in real world activities, sorry if it came across as mis guided or poorly written, but i feel it would be useful to people looking for a decent starting point,
just a thought, thats all it was.......
*has a feeling this thread will be locked up soon*
For me, the AZTOR X2 Ultimate is still the best ROM using WM6.1.
TF3D is very fast, RAM consumption is at 50%, even by launching and closing apps as Opera, Tomtom, etc, the RAM level is around 50-60%.
The X2 is also stable as hell, and multilanguage.
Don't hesitate to try this ROM
yep, Aztor X2.
Always fall back to that one. Very nice with flip-it and landscape manila.
All you need there, speed, no bugs, good battery.
Anticipating that the thread will most likely close is an accurate prediction.
Discussions of this nature "Discussing Best Roms", is frowned upon.
All cooked Roms are great and should be treated as such.
Try the latest ROMs and be your own judge.
and for this reason

So many roms.. So confused!

ive looked at the rom section abit, and with all the many different roms, i have no clue what to pick. My first time even considering this so i guess i wouldve thought theird be like 3-4 major roms that are popular, but cant really tell whos using what.
Any suggestions?
most of the time, it is like that. But there came many new roms the past few weeks. later on when the devices gets less populair there will be some favorites.
For know I suggest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559776
And then the HERO rom. Not the light & sexy. It's very fast en it's stable. Also, it looks nice
The general rule I follow is:
Try them all.
But I will start with the threads that have the most posts on. Those are likely to be the most popular ones. I will spend a day with each and then pick the one I liked best.
Generally it depends on what you want. Some ROMs come packed with useful apps and stuff. Some come with mountains of useless crap. Some come with nothing.
Depends how much time you have to play with them.
only problem with "trying them all" is im not familiar or totally comfortable with rom flashing, as i dont want to 'brick' my phone.
If you have HardSPL and are just flashing regular ROMs, it is nearly impossible to truly brick your device. I've flashed well over 50 times on my trusty Kaiser, and haven't ever bricked it. So don't worry about that, flash away.

Same here, re flashed so many times and never bricked!
Go and test them all!!
also depends what you're looking for in a different rom, speed? tf3d 2.5, a particular build of winmo? that will help you decide.

Ahm, no. General rule is: If your device is working and you need it to work, stay away from them all
All the ROMs here are result of hard work of pretty smart guys - some are working better than others and some are right from the beginning just thought to be 'experimental' ROMs. But I haven't seen a single one that works without any flaws.
I decided to play with ROMs on my older phones I don't use on a daily base anymore. My #1 phone stays as it is.

I usually agree, most roms have major issues.......... That said im on A.Z.T.O.R rom...... The only problem is a mms issue that easily fixed with adding a url in the settings........ i
not taking anything away from the others but this roms almost perfect... possibly perfect

[Q] Best ROM? — Looking for a comparison matrix

There seem to be quite an assortment of ROMs to choose from for my Desire Z.
I have had my phone for about 5 months, and am still running stock (SHAME!)
Which ROM would you recommend I load?
Also, is there a nice free backup utility you'd recommend I use to backup all my files and contacts?
Thanks for all suggestions,
Alec Taylor

Titanium Back-up.
And what do you use your phone for most of the time, or just try the various roms and see which one fits you.
This question gets asked once or twice a week. Just use the search function, and you will find many threads on this same subject.
There is no "best" ROM. Its like asking "What is the best car?". It depends on what you expect to use it for, features, personal tastes, looks, etc. And just because there is a popular choice, or somebody may give your their opinion of what they like best, doesn't mean that you will agree.
Saying one ROM is best or better compared to others, is belittling to the developers that work so hard to cook custom ROMs and post them here for us. They each have their own benefits in their own ways. So do yourself a favor, search and browse, read up on the features of the ROMs, then try a few out and make your own decision based on what works best for YOU.
As redpoint already stated, there is no such thing as a single, best rom.
However the thread My opinion in ROMs is a good place to start reading up on all the different roms currently in circulation. The op hasn't been updated since March 5th, but it still provides a nice overview over the differences and features of the roms.

Keeping in mind, that particular thread is just one person's opinion. And one I find far from unbiased. He admits for a couple ROMs that he only spend 10 to 30 minutes with them. Which is not even enough to let the ROM "settle in" and show it true performance, much less giving it a real chance.
A decent starting point as any, I suppose. Since he reviews a large number of the ROMs available. But definitely read other threads and get other opinions also.

Looking for a simple stable custom rom Recomendation.

Ok I've been using Jelly bomb for a while, its ok seems to have some cool features and performance tweak tools pre-installed.
But a lot of other stuff shoe horned it that just seems to be for aesthetics, and perhaps overlap, and confilict, stuff like pimp my rom always crashes, I was never able to get flash to work properly.
I'm considering going back to just the Vanilla Stock DeOdexed rooted, and building up from there.
The things I'm most interested in having are, performance tweaking tools, decent functional features like TORCH
WiFi Tether even USB Tether if someone has gotten it to work on the GN2.
I want Touch Wiz, I really like the stock S-Note I've bought Papyrus, and Autodesk, I still prefer S-note for some things.
I don't care about all the buttons re themed, in fact I don't want a total theme I'll figure that out if I cared that much.
I prefer the stock water/ink effect for the galaxy note lock screen.
I would like to make sure I have access to the hidden menu stuff, and multi window for all.
I would like some way of forcing connection optimization wizard off. It seems to always be checked on, when ever I look at it.
I find the fact that groups like Team Venum have so many projects, yet no comprehensive guide to their projects anywhere very confusing, I don't want to waste hours test driving every custom rom.
simple and seamless, with little Fan Fare, is what I want.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
You really should place this in Q and A. You will get more positive responses there. All phones respond to roms differently, you are best off trying and nandroiding until you find one you like. good luck.
Thanks and I really don't know they seem pretty hostile in there when people ask for recommendations not sure how or why a rom will behave wildly differently on the same device owned by a different person, unless Samsung has some HUGE QC issues, since this is the Galaxy note 2 thread shouldn't behavior be consistent?
Also I'm still confused about groups like Team Venum having a multitude of Roms.
Shouldn't A "TEAM" Be working on one MAIN rom
or if its working on Multiple roms, shouldn't they have a somewhat comprehensive thread, discussing the different roms and how they might best serve
a users needs?
Honestly I don't have time to keep up and read thousands of pages of threads dedicated to various Roms, that don't even seem to declare what the roms
strengths and weaknesses are, just a list of things changed, added and modified.

not so much "wildly" different, but kernels may have different effects on different devices, ie, some phones can take a higher overclock than others that will freeze up and or reboot. It's really more about nuances as most of the peeps are enthusiasts on this forum, a little means alot.
Try Mack's or Miijah's... they are both stellar.

Yay A recommendation Thanks, now I have something I can investigate.
I find the fact that groups like Team Venum have so many projects, yet no comprehensive guide to their projects anywhere very confusing, I don't want to waste hours test driving every custom rom.
i dont get the first part at all..if you dont wanna spend hours on here i advise you to not root your phone if your not willing to learn about how it works..trying out the roms is what its all about to see whats best for you not what someone else thinks is good for you..
I agree with what evolving is saying, they're not making a product to sell. This is they're past time and hobby, they don't have to make the roms if they don't want to. If you don't feel like trying them out then don't, stick with what you know or try a stock rom. I do know what you mean, some roms do feel bloated but again it's up to the user. I found my rom and I've tried just about all and I thank all the developers for creating so many to choose from.
Did I miss the download link to this rom since it's in development?

I clung to my OG4G until a month ago mostly because the roms I was using were so superb - Myn's Warm and Myn's Synergy. I finally got the Note 2, I rooted it right out of the box and have been tweaking things myself while searching for a good ROM.
Reading the First Posts were always fun (sarcasm) and informative enough for me to know their claims were insane and I really don't want Pacmen or Blobs showing up constantly, anyway... Then I hit on Goodness Noteworthy 1.07...
This is a GREAT ROM. Deodexed, slick, fast, good looking, and it includes a ton of nice tricks for tweaking things yourself. And d/l and flash the 3 Minit Add on.
Can't recommend it more highly.
Try Digi's ROM. Very stable. I believe the battery and 4g icons are themed the rest is pure Stock.

Digiblur is a nice, consistent rom; I use it with perseus kernel. It has all the Samsung nosense out if it yet retains the good stuff including hardwriting Samsung keyboard.
I have to close the thread (its run its course) and move it to Q and A. Please follow the rules... even I can't post questions in the development section... And yes not only am I a Moderator here but I'm the leader of that confusing team too...

[Q] help me choose a rom

Hi
First of all, I'm not asking for "what is the best rom ever made", since theree is none. I want to know generally, which roms are good for me.
I want battery life, on 3g. Now I am on SJB 6.0, but I am thinking of a gb rom (maybe I'm wrong ), but I am asking if someone has any experience...
So, what is your opinion? battery life on 3g?
You can't get your answer because every person around has a personal taste and looking for something different.
Going further. Telling that one ROM is better than another is quite disrespectful to developers. Most of them spent much time making their work for FREE and one guy can easily depreciate their work.
If you're looking for answer - try. It's easy and making it on your own is much funnier than looking for spoon feeding in every situations. Thinking is fun

Says all you need to know.
You have to try it out yourself. You use phone differently than we do, your battery life is not the same as for other users.
Different people have different requirements for different ROMs, so different people will also have different opinions and different results because of the different settings used and different apps installed.

I think I was mentioning something general, battery life on 3g.
And I was looking for experiences people had with ROMs, mostly GB or ICS or job (which was better for them), not suggestions.
Why do I have to say "Sent from my Xperia Arc S using Tapatalk"?

The general answer is that it is more or less the same, no major difference, that you will notice.
Just stay on stock kernel.
