Performance question - Menu scrolling, SMS scrolling - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, not sure if this should go in the General section...?
This is something that has bugged me from day one with the phone. Why does scrolling with the 'All Programs' menu, and SMS messages seem clunky? It just seems like it's running at a lower frame per second compared to the rest of the phone. Even touch sensitiviy is lagged too. Is this a FPS issue or is scrolling through the menus or SMS messages really taxing the CPU to where it causes it to chug?

Since its loading a lot of data, it chugs, assuming you are using the stock messaging app. Handcent and chompsms alleviate that problem.

But even if I load a message that has less then 10 messages it still hesitates.
Sent from my Droid Incredible using the XDA App

Don't know then
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

I've played with 3 Incredibles, including mine, and they all have this problem. I'm about 99% sure it is just poor coding on HTC's part, since there are other parts of the phone with similar scrolling animations that don't lag.

That's odd. I've had mine since 4 days before launch and i can only think of one time when it has lagged. That was while downloading a ROM from rom manager listening to music, and using veiwing flash content from one of the froyo roms i do notice what u r talking about but only n the htc music and messaging apps. When using the stock android messaging and music apps from skyraider 1.8 they seem to have 0 lag. Like the guy above said probably poor coding on htc's part. I wouldn't call that lag. Just clunky scrolling. If u want to experience lag put a live wallpaper on droid 1. That is lag
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

So then I'm assuming the messaging program that comes with our phone isn't the stock Android one?

Which Messaging app do you use?

I was just wondering what Messaging app do you guys use? I did a fresh install of Skyraider 3.5 and am now using the stock HTC app. I like how simple it is, but I don't like the profile pictures. Since I don't link my contacts, all the pictures are just stock gray and that kind of gets annoying. I've been a longtime Handcent user though.

I was a handcent user from the get go; however, with my phone it was laggy and would not pop up right away when i open it and saw delays, etc. In a nutshell it was sluggish.
That's when I tried chompsms. The 2 are as we all know, very similar. However, I have come to like chomp as it is faster on my phone and loads my convo's which are extremely lengthy very quickly and there is no delay.
I like both, however chomp works much better on my phone.
Handcent with Swiftkey. Haven't used anything other than Handcent and the stock messaging app, and I have no interest in switching to anything else.
I used to use handcent, now I pretty much just stick with the stock. No real reason, does what I need it to do, send SMS/MMS.
I use GO Sms. I like it more than Handcent. The problem is that it needs to work with the stock messaging app(which kinda sucks.)

I use handcent because it splits threads for me so I can send my 1000 character texts without a problem and anyone ccan get them.

I use stock with sms popup for the same reason I don't use Sense roms- I don't need 2 facebook apps, 2 twitter apps, 2 sms apps, etc.
I have always liked handcent.
Chomp here. Love it. No reason to change.

I use Handcent also, it has a lot of great features... But, lately I have noticed that it hasn't been playing my MMS videos or the sounds attached them (qcp) ? I am using cm7 mod build #17 with the stock kernal, all data has been wiped all cache wiped then flashed... any thoughts ?
Handcent, works perfect on stock rom / rooted.
Super fast and love the black background and the fact that it will give super long texts when it splits up into multiples on others stock app.
I do believe that's a rom issue.

Handcent!
INC. SR3.5, Lou #9, 40gb, 1800mah
Handcent just because it's so easily customizable.
I had always felt like my Handcent pop up messages were delayed. Phone would ring, screen turn on then a second or 2 later the popup would appear.
Since installing CM7 though, it has been instant, no delay between ring and message popup. Not sure if this was fixed in Handcent or not, but either way, CM7 is amazing
used handcent for awhile but now I just use the stock miui app
Stock with SMS Popup. Handcent makes me feel like im using an iPhone. If I wanted to use an iPhone I would of bought one.

Amen! It's amazing (dare is say...Incredible?) how long my battery lasts now that I am not using 2 apps that do the same general function as 1 app. Just plain stupid.
Stock HTC Messaging for me. On AOSP roms, I use Handcent. I haven't tried Chomp or GO SMS or any of the others.
I switch between the stock htc one and Go SMS

What negative effects have you seen from enabling Hardware accel?

Ok, I know a few people say don't enable 2D GFX Hardware acceleration because it could cause problems in apps that don't support it yet...but what apps?
I haven't found a need to enable it at all (all my apps are great), but I keep seeing this *relentlessly* and nobody has managed to say what negative effects we've seen so far. Are there specific apps that have problems with this option? What happens in those apps?
Just curious because nobody's explained why they feel so strongly about it lol
What are the positive effects? I tested it and I didn't really notice a difference.
i tried to run some apps with this option on, and off. Cant realy see a difference. Maybe you will in the future or in other apps but i`m still looking out for it
I enabled it for a while and tapatalk crashed right away, and wouldn't reopen until I disabled it.

One change I see is in the new Facebook app. The side menu's animation is a lot smoother with hard acceleration forced. Twitter is smoother also.

Interesting. Any idea how the battery life performs with it on/off?
It's a developer tool. Don't use it.
It can cause some problems with some apps that aren't updated to support full hardware acceleration even though its just one line of code.
Be aware that you have to kill the app and start it fresh for the setting to 100% take effect. (go to task switcher and swipe it away)
It makes a massive difference with apps like Facebook and Twitter! I've have had no adverse effects.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Apps crash, that's the negative consequence.
somebody just said that its a developer tool don't use it ... seriously?
I have been using it from day one ... seeing smooth scrolling specially in Browser, facebook, twitter, Gmail. All menus scroll smooth as well.
So all in all it does make a difference.

Anyone else lag while playing games?

I'm sure someone is addicted to words with friends and scramble with friends like I am.
I'm running ilwt (the latest).
If I don't manually go to applications and force stop one or the other, while I'm playing them, it litterally lags the hell out of my phone!
Has anyone else ran into this? Is there anything I can do about it?
Starting to finally feel like my phone can't handle what I throw at it! I know, those games are memory hogs, but hey, what can I say.... I'm addicted.

Yeah, my wife's G2 having this problem among other things. I've been trying fix her lag and fc problems for months. Have you run into any solutions yet?
Have u guys tried using adw launcher when playing high demand game? My trick, download home manager and adw from market, whenever u wanna play game switch to adw,and kill ur stock home launcher..it takes less than a min to set up,but hey,u get hours of smooth gameplay hope I help..

Hey. I playing Hanging with Friends (same dev as WWF) and Scrabble simultaneously every day. Usually without a glitch. I do get the occassional force close, but otherwise they run well. I'm also using ILWT. I keep my phone pretty lite though. In fact, I think I run Hanging with Friends from my SD. Perhaps it's time for a full wipe?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA
I went to elitmodcm7 and took hanging with friends off lol. Every once in awhile I get a little lag, so I put a shortcut onscreen for running services and when it gets a little laggy, I just open it up and stop the ones using the most resources..

Slower After Sense 4.1

Hey guys,
Anyone else experiencing their phone to be slightly slower AT times then when on Sense 4.0? Just sometimes my home screen and other parts of the system will just feel generally slower. The camera seems slower and the 'Developer Options' are really glitch now true. Tell the screen to flash when there is an update and the whole system becomes unresponsive. Really can't understand it..

well, you are the first one from whom i have heard that after installing sense 4.1 your phone is slower...
mate 4.1 is lot faster than sense 4.0 and is locked at 60 fps
try factory reset once and check if these problems still exist
have been using sense 4.1 for more than 2 weeks now and just loving it
Actually it is away faster in the screen switching, it is extremly smooth. However the app drawer lags alittle.
But overall it's faster.

Try a factory reset or if your rooted with a custom recovery just format cache and dalvic cache. Then Give the phone 2 full charges from at least 20% in at least a 2 day span.
It could be a bad app or mod that is causing the issues. Usually it's never a bad ota update that slows the device. Also I recommend a backup program.

Not so great after all...
While I don't notice that my phone is any slower after the update to 4.1, the update hasn't solved my WiFi issue. Which I wasn't really expecting it to, but they did say it should even out the signal, it hasn't. I couldn't tell the difference about the 3D widget stacking or whatever on the stock launcher, 'nor could I notice a difference when opening the app drawer or swiping through homescreens.
That is not to say that the update didn't do anything. I know that benchmarks don't prove much of anything, some argue that they do. I don't really care too much for them, but out of curiosity sake, I ran some. Now, my phone is bone stock, I can't unlock the bootloader because my volume rocker cable is broken. So I'm not rooted, nothing. With Sense 4.0 and Android 4.0.3 I scored horribly, worse than the One X in the stats, at about 3900. I don't know what was going on, but I ran that twice and got the same result. Anyway, after the update to 4.1 and 4.0.4 I scored 5928 and that is with Apex Launcher and Holo Locker locked in memory.
Take from the benchmarks what you will! The 4.1 update does not work miracles, but it's a step in the right direction!

I am very serious, I found it to be very smooth to begin with on 4.0... I didn't have my screens filled with lots of widgets or shortcuts though. That might make a difference. I haven't tried using a livewallpaper yet either. I do notice that Recent Apps seems to be a lot smoother, but with the stock launcher, I don't see much. The app drawer might be quicker to open than before.

Most certainly are right started off with a One X, got rid of it due to all the WiFi problems and other things coming to light, then picked up another one because the GS3 is so boring, but now I have both.
What I will say is what I am experiencing is not all the time every second, its just sometimes.. I'll have a quick go resetting and messing about, thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm experiencing the same after my ota - its great that the menu bar has gone but the home screen and recent apps just feel a bit sluggish.
For example, when opening recent apps, the current app will appear but other apps to the left of it appear after a slight delay. Swiping home screens is definitely more sluggish here; before ota it was a bit jerky (when swiping, home screen would occasionally jump from one position to another, but in general they followed finger location exactly), but now they lag slightly behind my finger, and instead of jumping positions they pause for a moment and then continue to move smoothly. I think this could be caused by the business calendar app though, it usually only happens on that page...
The problem with the launcher closing when a few apps are open is still just as bad as it was before (and still takes about 15-20 seconds to load the launcher again, which does seem a bit excessive...)
But despite the complaining above, it's really not the end of the world and I don't think it's worth bothering to do a factory reset and see if it works although I'm gradually growing to hate sense and might build up the courage to root and flash some experimental roms soon...

Hi,
Had the same problem. Turns out at least on my device after update to 2.17 the dev option "Don't keep activities" was ticked.
I know it wasn't before.
Wonder if it was a battery saving measure. Anyway made my phone sluggish so I turned it off, all back to normal.
Cheers

Anyone else dissapointed with Jellybean official update?

I count 4 to 6 stutters, or frame drops on EVERY individual vertical swipe. It happens in third party apps, in settings, in tapatalk, virtually anywhere where there is vertical scrolling. I can reproduce it on Rogers, Bell and Telus official ROM's with a clean wipe each time and even a format from the stock recovery which deletes all non-stock folders on /sdcard. It happens even if the app I am scrolling vertically in is the only one open.
Sure, everything else is smooth-er, but I spend most of my time on this phone swiping vertically, on tapatalk, facebook etc. For my usage, it feels just like 4.0.4. I'm scrolling a $500 device at 2 frames per second. Do you know what year this is?
They call it butter but it feels more like a dull blade scraping on oakwood.

the update is pretty lame IMO. I have 2 games that are now almost unplayable, I hate the grey background in the notification bar, the home button doesnt "wake up" the phone in the app it was before, the zooming on the side in the browser is really annoying, and the list goes on.
The only benefit I can see is Touchwiz is a little bit snappier, thats it.
Anyone knows how to go back ?

Mine is pretty snappy and smooth. I do not have the framing problem at all. In fact the scrolling has gotten much smoother. The battery problem has been solved with the cell standby and with regards to the waking up the phone with the home button, mine brings me back to the app, but I have read on other threads that some are having issues. I upgraded via Kies, but I doubt it would make a difference.
I know my friend was having issues until he did a factory reset, and everything got fixed.
The "home button wake returns to home" issue is a real deal breaker for me. Not worth the minor improvements IMHO (and I would classify the performance improvements as minor at best). Back to ICS for the time being. Pretty disappointed...
I'm quite happy with it. I like the new widgets for favorite contacts and Google Now is quite nice too.
My contacts didn't work since flashing AT&TJB ROM,never was smooth kind of jerky.LTE was great but I switched to new AT&T Black Jelly and it runs great!

Maybe it's an app you have that isn't compatible with Jelly Bean. There were some pretty major changes. I had bad lag, until I realized it was the negative brightness overlay from Lux. Why don't you find other people with the lag and compare app lists?
And, my home button to wake up brings me back to whatever app I was in.
Of course you can go back.......look in the development threads for the stock ICS ROM. What website do you think you're at?
