Im no expert at rooting or anything,(i haven't even rooted), but it could be cause you have a telstra model desire. Theres a rom with froyo+sense that works on the A8183 on whirlpool forums, so have a look there

The problem is I cant even get to the process of flashing another rom. I am trying to get root access to perform this step. I have already debranded it and got root access once before with the 0.75 boot loader. Now I cant with the 0.8 boot loader following the instructions to the letter...
I have an unbranded and unlocked Desire ( singapore import ), and still needed a Gold Card.
But i have heard of many people on forums saying that they had to try multiple brands of uSD card before they had a Gold Card that worked.
I used the rooting guide in the very first sticky post in this sub-forum using the live CD method, and it failed at the same point as you, but making a gold card fixed the problem.
My desire also has the .80 bootlader, but use the method provided by theunlockr.com and your home free
Have you tried unrEVOked 3?

Download THIS and follow the rooting instructions to root a phone on HBOOT 0.80 - the files are different to 0.75 (a quick read of the MCR root guide would've pointed this out)
Ok it's all good now. I had all the right programs etc but a third download of those tools from the alternate link seemed to work. The step 1 thing went twice as long the with the newly downloaded r6 tools.
I now have a recovery image and a 2.2 rom installed . Thanks for the unrevoked3 suggestion guys .

Lol. Because I was not awear of it. I just google'd debranding htc desire and all the manual stuff comes up so that's where I started..
i rooted my desire about 5-6 days ago i am running on the .80 bootloader and the 1.15 rom thru HTC, but now the issue im running into, and maybe someone can guide me on this is..... I can not get into recovery or flash a custom recovery image! should i just re-flash to stock, unroot, and go thru the Unrevoked3 process to get everything working... I want to be able to load custom roms either directly thru downloading them from the web and saving them to my sdcard or thru rom manager and i cant....
If I go into fastboot mode and then bootloader then recovery it pops up the HTC logo for 2-3sec then goes right back into fastboot mode.

try theunlockr.com and just search for how to root your HERO in one click. I have used that site to root my HTC Magic and my friends Magic, as well as my own HERO and my friends HERO. Very helpful.
(Im sorry to the admins if i am not allowed to post outside links)
What went wrong with the goldcard method? Thats a hardcore way of rooting so its strange for it not to work...
Double check your creation of the goldcard! I found the method at http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how-to-downgrade-your-htc-hero-so-it-can-be-rooted/ worked perfectly for me. Though I did have some trouble with RUUs, try a couple and see which one works for you. I forget which one worked for me in the end.
Aleks
Yeh i gotta say, my G2 on T-Mob was abit of a pain, but i managed to root it using the gold card method, using the stock MSD that came with the phone, i didnt even have to use a MSD>USB i just mounted it using the phone.
What OS are you using, i managed to do it on wXP, though if you are using Vista+ then MAKE SURE that you are using Run As Administrator!!! Else it will fail!
Edit:
I forgot to mention, i dont know why but it took 3 times for the root to actually take, i dont know why, the first 2 times, i rooted the phone, isntalled the WWE HTC Rom, then flashed a new bootloader all fine, then installed a custom rom, i think MoDaCo first (i cant remember i have flashed too much over the past week) but for some reason the SU wouldnt work, though i dont think this is what solved it, it was probbly me being stupid, but i flashed my bootloader again, and it finnaly worked, personally i would recomend RA's Rec Image link saved my a** a few time
Also the Howto in the Wiki of this site is good Link
I tried 3 different micro sd cards before i managed to get the goldcard to work. The card than came with did not work for me so id suggest trying it again with a different sd card. The one that finally did work for mine was a 16Gb Kingston one.
Goldcard works a treat
Just make sure you do it in the right order.
Do the SD Card hack and then downgrade to the HTC hero rom linked in the Gold card thread once thats installed then you can use flashrec.
The HTC Hero ROM downgrade is the most important if thats not done flashrec will just keep failing.
So
1) SD Card hack
2) HTC Hero ROM downgrade using the RRU on the Gold Card thread.
3) Install Flashrec (goto the flashrec thread linked at the bottom of the gold card isntructions)
4) Install Recovery ROM
5) Copy the ROM you want to your SD card.
6) load into boot loader (Hold down home while turning on and hold it until bootload starts)
7) Do a WIPE
8) Load new ROM from SD card.
hi guys thanks for all the suggestions,
with goldcard, am able to run through the whole process but at the end I can not flash new Recommended ROM
any suggestions
I had the same problem on the T Mobile G2....
First off the MSD card i was using caused problems, but the stock one that comes with the phone works fine.
Then i ran into problems flashing the rom that the tutorials provide. So i downloaded a whole bunch and it was trial and error until i found one that worked. It's strange how some people find it works as per the tutorial, and others have to try different RUU roms...
Good luck!
Hi, I am new to the andriod platform an i have just got a HTC Desire with Virgin Mobile, PLEASE BE GENTLE.....
It does not seem to be sim locked as i have tried an Orange sim in the phone and it works.
I have seen a Desire with Froyo on it and want to upgrade my phone.
After trying all the guides on various forums i still cannot upgrade and VM is not offering the update OTA.
when trying the Goldcard method I get error wrong bootloader, when trying with the OTA named update.zip using recovery it also throws up an error and exits.
What i have done now is rooted the phone using unrevoked3 method which has worked.
i want to have a stock 2.2 phone, not bothered about keeping the root, if i put the OTA update.zip on the sd card (or goldcard as i have created one) and flash using the clockworkmod recovery which is now on my phone will this work or should i update the radio first and will i be able to get OTA updates in future ???
my desire is:
Firmware 2.1-update1
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Software number 1.23.351.1
Bootloader 0.80.0000
when it boots it has the VM logo but apart from that there is no other branding on the phone.
Obviously i dont want to brick the phone, i have done lots of reading and i am still unsure of how i can get my phone updated.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help....
Your phone is rooted?
Simply download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
Which is a rooted but everything else is the same as stock 2.2. That way you'll have the option to use custom roms etc.
If you need step by step instructions to flashing as the guide on that page isn't so detailed let me know.

Thanks for the reply , if i keep root i was thinking of trying this rom
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
i take it since my desire is rooted and i am on boot 0.80.000 i will just need to flash radio first , then flash the rom??
will it matter that my desire is possibly classed as branded and has the operators custom firmware on looking at the software number???
do i just rename the radio to update.zip and put on sd card and flash with clockworkmod , then do the same with the rom ???
should i use the goldcard when doing the above or will any sd card be ok??
thanks again for the advice....
Update....
Took the plunge and installed radio 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 and then the Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM [Market issue fixed].
All went well but the phone was running slow.
Did a factory reset and wipe in clockworkmod and reinstalled the rom.
restored my apps using mybackup , got contacts back off google account and all is good now.
I stupidly updated my Bell Desire Z to 1.84.666.2 the other day. Looking for a way to downgrade to a version that can be rooted.
Found this thread, but it's for a previous update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Love this phone but I really want to dump Bell's extra software and Sense.
Please, any helpful input is appreciated!
How far through that guide did you get, what error message? I did 1.84 -> 1.34 to get S-OFF & root.
Following the tutorial got me temp root access but was unable to boot the firmware. I suppose I need to make a goldcard but that tutorial has a few broken links. Anyone want to give me a resource that explains what is going on in that tutorial a little more deeply? I remember reading in a previous forum that 1.8 update could be rolled back.
I'm on a Bell DZ too...

You will need a goldcard if you don't already have SuperCID via gfree, and you can't find an earlier ROM/RUU that matches your CID.

I'm getting stuck at step 11. I get to the white bootloader screen and without doing anything the phone does and SD check, looks for PC10DIAG.zip, etc, then finds PC10IMG.zip and checks it. Then I get bumped out to the bootloader list of FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIMLOCK and IMAGE CRC.
It's unclear what to do from there. The tutorial says I'll get a prompt to update and restart, but I don't.
Also, the tutorial says I'll need a goldcard (which I created) but no where in the tutorial does it say what to do with it...
I got a goldcard using Gold Card Tool. Just do a google search of "easy goldcard".
I've managed to iron out that issue. I had made a mistake when making the goldcard.
Problem now is that when I get to step 11 the phone says "Model ID incorrect!" then "Update Fail!".
Any ideas?
Where are you getting your PC10IMG from?
From the guide I linked earlier. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
I downloaded the full RUU and renamed the extracted rom.zip.
I had goldcard issues (broken links) so I got the rom that matched my current region. I then did the temp root, modded the version info and let the phone try the update. Once I got it all sorted it worked as is said in the guide. I don't know if the goldcard tool worked or not, I think not as I wanted to change the Asian phone to WWE but had to go down to Asian 1.34 then go S-OFF and then go WWE. Maybe an extra step but it worked.
How do I find a rom that matches my current region?
The desire z was purchased from Bell Mobility in Canada and is now being used on Rogers.
This thread may be of help to you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029821
Thanks for that link! I basically did as the guy said and used the link to the 1.34.666.1 rom you linked in that thread. Only difference was I uploaded it to the SD and the issued the command adb reboot bootloader. This time no errors and the update worked!
So now I guess I just go ahead with a normal root of a 1.34.666.1 DZ?
Weird thing is the guy in that other thread said he got S-Off from doing this update... On my phone it's still S-On.
All you have done is put a rom on the phone that allows S-OFF, I can't see anyway you could get it in a stock rom?!

You should now be able to follow this guide to get S-OFF (as above, I don't see how flashing a stock ROM would do this automatically): http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
So after downgrading I had S-ON. But I just finished the rest of the rooting process in the guide I linked in my original post and got root!
What a process. That must have taken 12 hours or more. I should really post a new guide with more complete info.
Thanks for the help guys!
Now that I have root and S-Off downgrading from 1.84.666.2 to 1.34.666.1 using the processes DVDWSN did. Now I thought I could go back to 1.84.666.2 using OTA like I upgraded the first time. But when I try to do OTA, I get the message I do not have any new version. What gives?
If you are trying to downgrade do not touch OTA updates lol. Anyways, what you want to do is temp root your phone so you can 'spoof' the radio version the an old one thereby allowing you to flash a radio that can be manipulated. If you aren't sure what to do then try following this guide.
Hey,
I've been trying to root my HTC Desire, which led me to Unrevoked (instructions from rootmydroid.co.uk).
I've installed and uninstalled HTC Sync, enabled USB Debugging, allowed Unknown Sources, etc.
Using both the latest version of Unrevoked 3.32 and older 3.21 - the software reports "Internal error: Couldn't find misc".
I was then told to use a custom recovery image, which I downloaded and used with Unrevoked (both versions), where it all went well until it stopped at the recovery image screen and appeared to be doing nothing. After reboot, still no root.
Hopefully you guys can help me out.
Chris
installed the hboot drivers from unrevoked?
actually - do a search on the forum - I am 99% sure someone had the 'misc' error before and there's a fix for it...
Just spent an hour researching and as I went to post it I got a white screen, losing my post. Stupid phone, I'll use the app in future.
Basically, I couple posts say that downgrading the HBOOT worked for them. A couple others recommend following the manual DIY guide, though being new to this I'd probably avoid that.
I should probably point out I have an Orange branded Desire. One post said that previously these phones needed to pay for a 'gold card' to get rooted, but wasn't sure if this was still the case.
So, just wanted to ask afresh on advise for steps to take to do this.
Gold card probably needed then as branded

I implemented the gold card successfully. Using Unrevoked3, it goes well until "running root...", "this was a triumph", "Internal error: failed to unlock NAND flash?". (The older Unrevoked 2.2 still returns the misc error).
I have installed Unrevoked's HBOOT drivers & restarted PC, installed and uninstalled HTC Sync... to no avail.
Any help appreciated.

I followed the guide, but I'm getting "adb not recognized as an internal or external command" repeatedly. Do I need the Android SDK installed or something (it doesn't say that).
I reaplied to you an android forums. But matDroid is correct. And yes you need adb set up. See the adb faq in my Sig. It gives you the minimum effort method to achieve this
Thanks, I got adb working after isntalling Android SDK quite some time ago, just haven't updated this thread since.
As I mentioned on Android Forums, the downgrade didn't go well (similar to this photo).
I then tried installing a couple RUU's, which I'm told were the wrong ones, leaving me with the HTC logo and 4 /!\
Installing a stock RUU has brought it back to life.
I'll continue trying to root soon.
Unrevoked 3 program gets stuck at "Waiting for root...”
I have been trying to root my device for last 3 days .I have done enough research and gone through various forms .
Following the guide ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145035 ) successfully got my device S-OFF using Revolutionary .
In step 2 : according to guide downloaded and tried
“RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_Radio_13.45.55.24_3 .35.15.31_release_130814_signed_2”
Got stucked with non-working touchscreen.
Again downloaded and tried “RUU_Buzz_Froyo_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.24.707.1_Radio_13.5 5.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_161113_signed”
Now touchscreen is working but it is showing android 2.2.1 again .So what's the point of downgrading ?
Run Unrevoked and it is unable to gaining root.
It shows :
Running preboot seq….
Waiting for reboot…..
Running root…
Waiting for root…..( I have waited for 20 mints but it keeps saying this)
[ USB debugging is enabled
Usb drivers are installed
Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone. ]
After all this mind boggling i have reached here :
Android 2.2.1
Revolutionary
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.01.1002
MI CROP-0622
RADIO 3.35.20.10
Should I use different version of unrevoked ? 3.31 ? here..( http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how...evoked-method/ )
But again in guide “androidybloidy” says in step 3 :”Download the test version of unrevoked (here). Let me repeat, DO NOT USE UNREVOKED 3.32 as it will lead to CID errors or to be precise this error
"Validation error, backup CID is missing".”
What to do now ? Do I need to downgrade to 2.1 éclair to use revoked ? Do I need to download Éclair RUU for India ? If “yes” where can I get the download link ? Some forums say I don’t need to if I have already got S-OFF.I am totally lost.
Now I feel like tearing my hair out.
Any ideas ? How can get around it?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I wanted to try the method suggested by “3xeno” on #83
http://joel5121.blogspot.com/2011/06...-tutorial.html
but under “clockwork recovery” the link to “fastboot tool “ redirects to http://htcdev.com/ and there is no tool like “fastboot tool” on that page.Again the download link to “recovery for wildfire”in step 4 is broken.
What should I do ?
Should I follow this ? : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1130044
Is there a way out ?
feel like throwing my HTC out the window:confused:
SOLVED
Finally installed ClockworkMod recovery and Rooted the device.
are you trying to put a custom rom on the phone or just root it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12188132&postcount=15 follow this guide to put a custom recovery on it, follow method 2.
now, if your going to flash a custom rom just do this from your new recovery and your new rom will have been pre rooted. (well, it should be ) if not then im pretty sure that there is a flashable superuser zip that will give you root once you`ve s-offed but i cant remember where i saw it but i think tht would be youe best bet without having to downgrade again.
how did you make it work cause im having the same problem
yeah if you said its working how did you make it work :was it using the non-test version or did u try something else
