Uk orange desire advice needed - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

high guys can you give me some advice, I have just got a desire on orange uk and now want to flash a generic rom to this phone as the orange firmware is shiiite.
So could some one let me know what steps are needed please, as I'm a bit confused as to what guides to follow and if unlocking is needed.
Thanks in advance guys and gals

No need to unlock it if you are staying on orange
I would suggest following this http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/
As the TUT on here is still for the r5 rooting process - you will have to make a goldcard
After this is all done you will be able to flash a generic rom or any rom on here

Newbie to android !

Hi guys, I just bought a HTC Hero off ebay and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
In the meantime I'm trying to read a lot about customizing my Hero (I previously own an ELF and I'm familiar to ROM flashing and stuff).
Now after reading a bit I'm starting to know a bit more, but there is so much information it's hard to get the full picture.
So here it's my situation: the phone comes from orange UK so will be branded. What I want to do is remove all the branding and then flash a nice working ROM.
Here are the steps I got, let me know if I forgot anything or if anything is unecessary (for instance do I need to unbrand befor flashing):
1 - install nandroid and make a backup
2 - Root
3 - unbrand
4 - flash (modaco's rom seems to be a hit)
thanks for your help
Geeum
seems to be correct
unbrand ?
Thanks. The question I have is: do I need to unbrand before installing modaco's ROM ? Or will the modaco ROM unbrand it anyway ?

It will unbrand anyway, it did with my Orange one.
What does that unbrand mean? That it will be sim lock free?
I'm no expert but I belive you root your phone which will put Nandroid on then you do the backup. Well thats what I did anyway.

the question: is my HTC Desire is locked version cuz it has the orange logo on the back side ?
My Desire is also Orange UK branded (black one, with the logo on the battery cover...) and it was locked. But I unlocked it and installed generic WWE ROM.

how 2 unlock ....n do i need 2 do that cuz my phone is working w any sim now...
If it works with any SIM already, then it's unlocked (mine was locked, so I had to unlock it).
In that case, your Desire is only branded. You see the orange logo when it boots up, right? If that doesn't bother you, then keep it. If it bothers you, then install generic ROM (you can find them in the Desire Android Development forum).

thanks a lot
you will still need a goldcard to install generic rom
i also got my phone unlocked through htcunlock website. now it just the branded one with orange. so this means that i need a goldcard to intall any rom on it? say for example i want to install Pays Desire ROM, i need goldcard to do so?
please help as i seriously want to install rom
thanks
The way I understand it, since you own branded phone, you still need to pass CID (sd card ID) check in order to install new rom, and you can do it with goldcard
Yes, I had to use goldcard on my branded desire to install a generic ROM.
tried with goldcard but after 45 attempts i gave up completely
You must be doing something wrong.
Would you share with us at what step you get stuck? Maybe someone can help...

yep, he forgot to root it first
no i didnt forgot to root. i tried each and every step over and over again, as told here in the forums and also at modaco... but wasnt able to. can someone please post a guide for doing the same? an easy one.... step by step guide with links to the required files.
you need to provide step by step details - what did you do, and where it stucked
I'd also like to put a generic HTC ROM on my Orange Desire.... I found flashing winmo phones easy... but I cant find any Andriod noob guides that really explain how to do it easily enough.... I dont even know what rooting is to be honest!

htc desire orange stuck

hi i have htc desire which is an slcd phone i came to know after rooting and using alpharev now its stuck on why so serious. I have made a gold card as well before i tried to root. So my quetion is how to restore the phone back to normal as there's no orange stock rom available regards
Orange don't have any roms on the net only way is to find someone with an orange one and ask then to dump the image...

Did alpharev go success full or are you stuck at step 3.
If your not stuck at step 3 and have not finished S-offing make sure you do not reboot or pull the battery and contact alpharev via irc chat.
@theghost1233, hi everything was done accordingly and it was success in 3rd step as well. so alpharev dint have no errors. Can you please tell me how to restore it back or any firmware you think i can use?
hi before rooting it was showing hboot version 0.75 and after rooting 0.93. can anyone tell what is the best way to do it?
Regards
If you've got a gold card I'd get the 2.29.405.2 PB99IMG.zip from shipped-roms.com and flash that to at least have a working phone
hi can you please tell me in a little more detail please thanks

@EddyOS, hi i have done what you've said and my phone is back to normal nice one mate. You are a star thanks again.

[Q] Unroot Help

Hey Guys,
I am wanting to unroot my desire back to 'out of the box' stock i have been reading all over the forum tutorials on how to achieve this.
My question is my phone was on Orange (contract) but now i use o2 (PAYG) sim so which RUU should i download from shipped-roms? The o2 RUU?
Conditions:
*Rooted with Unrevoked
* S-Off
*Using Redux Rom
*CWM-AlphaRev Recovery v2.5.1.8
I am a little out of my depth so some guidance would be much appreciated in what i need to be doing. Do i just download the RUU (Bravo?) and install it?
Thanks.
you could give this guide a try:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-unroot-the-htc-desire/
If the phone originally came with the Orange FW on it then you're stuck as there isn't an Orange RUU available. Best to use the stock WWE (unbranded) one. Here's a link, and you'll need a gold card to flash it:

Thanks for the help.

In the UK? Look for a HTC WWE RUU. A quick google search should help you =)
Be warned though, this will wipe all data, unroot you & (I think) return you to S-ON (unable to flash custom ROMs)

That would be perfect, and yes it's UK, it's my daughters phone so custom roms wouldn't be needed. I am guessing that it would need rooting first to get the Rom on, also I have read threads regarding radio's, goldcards etc, do I need to worry about that or will the ruu have everything I need?
Thanks for your response.

You wouldn't need to root your phone to run an RUU =)
