Hello guys, this is my first post and I'm just wanting to say I've trawled these forums thoroughly, and found some fantastic guides which I am wanting to follow, but and I can't find out if it's alright to port Froyo to my Desire on Orange.
I got the Desire on Orange 4 weeks ago, and everything I own, whether it be a PC, PSP, old Sony Ericssons, even my Sky+ Box is modded, and I'd love to have my Desire work to it's full potential, and I think rooting and Froyo is definitely the way to go, and I despise, actually despise the Orange branding, it breaks my heart a little to have the Orange Logo on the back of the phone, but that's for another time!
I would like to port Froyo to my Desire, and as previously said it is on Orange, and I have read guides (not on XDA) which said it can be rather difficult(?) to do so, talking about Radio Bands and what not? Pretty confusing, and as this is my only desire, and rooting the phone makes the warranty void, I'd like to make sure if it's safe enough to do it on Orange.
Cheers for reading my rant and what not, and I hope there's someone here or around which can answer my questions .
It shouldn't be any different on Orange. Only thing that may happen is you lock your phone and you can either re-flash the correct radio or buy an unlock code.

Or you can be unlucky, like me, and certain newer radios don't let GPS work. But worth unlocking in the end anyway (8 quid on ebay).
Well, I don't mind if it's locked to Orange as that's what I'm using it on at the moment which is fine on my part! Well then, if it's the same on Orange, I'll give it a go. And I'm sure I can find the right radio for GPS to work properly, well hopefully anyway as I do use GPS quite a lot of the time anyway.
Thanks for the reply guys, I'll let you know how I get on!

Not quite, you've missunderstood or, more likely, I've miss-explained! It locks the phone so you can't use ANY simcard without putting in an unlock code. Don't ask me why it does it but it does.
should be ok
I'm on t-mobile UK and i just flashed to froyo without any problems. As far as i know, other than the logos, t-mobile is practically the same as orange, in that you can put an orange sim in a t-mobile and vice versa, and they should work. hope this helps.
If you want to flash froyo, most of the custom roms now use the new leaked radio. Being on Orange this radio will sim lock your handset so you will need to buy a sim unlock code.
You will also need a gold card to root, and I'd also suggest you use the riskfree guide on modaco.

So when you say simlock my handset, will that mean it's locked to all, or just to Orange when flashing a new Radio?
Already used the riskfree guide on modaco, worked perfectly, finally no more Orange Branding, shame that I couldn't get Orange Maps back as it was nice, and it's a part of my contract but nevermind

That wasn't the greatest idea you may have had before.
If they do turn it on, they will void your warranty. So, from what I've heard they will more than likely charge you full price for the replacement. ($600 or whatever it is now).
You really should have re-flashed your phone before sending it in... just pray they don't power it up.
(and if you bricked your phone from improperly flashing it, that's the risk you take from modding your phone, and you should have just taken one for the team.)
Good luck!
If you have not sent it in yet, re-flash with the Cingular ROM. Otherwise you will get a bill for $600.00

I agree with this, but the problem is, where is the original CINGULAR ROM? The "Cingular" ROM posted in the Wiki section of this site is actually an at&t branded ROM. The ROM that came on my 8525 purchased only a few weeks ago (and subsequent replacement) had a Cingular branded ROM (Cingy logo bootscreen, no anmiated boot, Cingy logo/background/icons on the Today Screen, etc.).
I was having issues with the backlighting on my phone so I took it up the Cingy store to have it exchanged. I tried everything I could do to keep the sales rep from booting up the phone, but he did and then couldn't understand how I got an at&t branded O/S on it. Luckily, one of the other sales reps said "Hey, look... We just got in a new Razr with the at&t badge and O/S!!". The sales rep I was dealing then said "Yeah, this guy's 8525 has an at&t O/S as well, but he bought his a couple weeks ago...". Needless to say, I played dumb and quickly made a mad dash for the door with my replacement handset before they could ask any further questions.
Anyway, it'd be nice if someone could find and post the Cingy branded ROM. Maybe it's already on the site somewhere and I just didn't see it...??

Well Cingular = AT&T now so as long as it was a released AT&T rom you are good, though I am guessing it wasn't. You can download the roms by going to www.cingular.com clicking on support (make sure 8525 is your phone) then click on HTC site link.
Once there select cingular as the carrier and 8525 as the model, click software/downloads
and click download.
Easy.

Here is the "official" cingular ROM currently released to the public .. straight from the HTC support website.
Now, whether you can simply run the RUU and re-install this over Black 2.0, I am not really sure ... others will have to weigh-in on that one.
Or goto htcamerica.net and all the carrier roms are on there too.
Allright,
as with the last poster, go to www.htcamerica.net and reflash. Because as a cingular representative, I can tell you that there is a 50/50 chance not in your favor that they'll deny your warranty exchange and send you a $600 phone bill.

I have a feeling one of the fine folks on this site will know here to get it if you can wait a little bit before sending it in. If not, I'd at least flash it down to the at&t/Cingy WM5 ROM. At least it will be their ROM and the correct WM release. You can play dumb like I did if they question you about it. Just say that's how it came from the store. If they push you on it, say something like, "First, I'm offend by your perveted comment!!! I have no idea what 'flashing' or this ROM you speak of is. Second, are you telling your store sold me a used phone?? Well then I either want a replacement ASAP of I want all charges refunded immediately!!". Push it back on them.
You should be fine putting the old version on. I worked for me at least...
Wow, I guess I'm sloooow to pull the trigger. Lot of answers already.
Yes, I know Cingular = at&t. However, that didn't keep the Cingular rep from questioning why/how I had an at&t branded ROM. I assume the phones with the at&t ROM will have the at&t brand/logo on the shell. Not a Cingular logo on the shell with the at&t ROM. I assume this would waive a red flag to the warranty repair folks...

Since I have never tried to downgrade my SPL, I am not really sure how to do it (though I bet the answer is on the wiki).

There is a STEP BY STEP Guide to down grade to WM5 (orig cingy) and then read more of the thread and it will tell you what you need to do to get the SPL back to orig cingy too. Same should go for IPL if you managed to upgrade that as well.
i debranded from orange rom and everything was fine i got an update so i did it now its saying network locked ?
Are you sim-locked to Orange?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yup but i got the first update and everything was the same now i got a another update and it has gone like this
Try to unlock your sim card and the message should not appear again. You can buy an unlock code directly from Orange or get one online from a reputable sim-unlocking site, even on eBay. It is possible that you flashed a generic rom that included one of the radio versions which causes this network message to appear. This only happens with Orange branded phones for some reason...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I guess the update was 1.21.405.2
Orange phones that have been de-branded seem to either have their WiFi broken or go to SIM Lock. The only way out of it is to buy an unlock code. (See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=693511)
The same happened to me -- although I know it would, and still wanted to de-brand. I just bought a code for £9 from: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300434867258#ht_1893wt_911 popped it in and it worked!
Yeah, it's not ideal but at least you have a de-branded and unlocked phone.
You see what you did there Faddy? You've been told on TWO previous posts SEARCH THE FORUM. In fact the answer to the two obvious questions you asked needed NO SEARCH AT ALL as the answers were recent enough they're still on the front page, but you decided beeing snarky and lazy was better.
Well you would have read peoples issues with the second update and would have avoided this. I have zero sympathy for you.
I have seen many posts by this member... makes you think, could he not have just noted all his queries in one post?

I have to agree with you lot that the OP is lazy and wants spoon fed!
That said, Faddys, if you flash an older radio this should unlock your sim for you again.
I'll let you do the searching to find which one
Edit: When you flash a radio, it goes through 2 reboots. DO NOT interrupt the flash, or remove the battery if you think it's taking too long. This will brick the handset.

Seems like it's the first thing everyone has done. Getting my replacement handset tomorrow. Wondering whether it's worth doing it. We've seen people have issues upgraded debranded versions - is this still an issue? Are the networks usually slow to propagate manufacturer updates to their users?

Essentially you make a goldcard which is super simple and takes about 10-15 minutes on a Windows machine and then flash with the generic ROM that can be found on the forum.

I was looking to do the same to save me some battery power. Sounds daft yes. I have an app called Startup Manager and I am sure that a few other people have too. You know that without root access you can't do it and I know that applications use like 60%+ of the battery at all times. I was wondering whether it would be worth rooting a brand new (2 days old) HTC Desire on Orange on contract so I can stop most of the applications on startup?
Hi,
just had a text conversation with a Vodafone support person called Beverly. I asked if she/they knew when 2.2 would be out for voda branded desires - the answer was
"There is no update about the release date or the Android 2.2 (Froyo)"
"Prior to releasing or approving any software update for customers who have bought a handset through Vodafone, we test it thoroughly to ensure it provides customers the best possible experience on our network. Our testing process begins as soon as we receive the software, which often happens once the manufacturer has already released the open market version of the software."
"During the review process, we report any issues with the software back to the manufacturer for them to address. Once the firmware is approved by Vodafone, we return it to the manufacturer and they will then distribute the software to customers through the appropriate channels."
And her last comment was
"We will release the firmware as soon as possible "
Basically don't hold your breath
My friend is stuck on 1.6 on Vodafone because they don't release updates. Basically sh it yourself.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've just called and had the same standard reply. I asked for my concerns to be 'flagged' and was told that every call about this is being collated and 'pushed upstairs'. So I suggest Voda customers ring on 191 and (nicely) make their point of view clear and then also ask for their comments to be flagged...
just debrand then update
i got pissed off waiting also last night.so took upon myself to debrand the phone..
made a goldcard=4 minutes or so
=downloaded wwe rom=4 minutes
debranding phone=10 minutes
switched on..checked for updates froyo was there
seriously very easy procedure..id do it if i was you
Same here - one of the easiest things i've ever done.
Make some backups and you lose nothing but your individual program settings for programs that you've downloaded.
Whole thing took me about an hour inc making and restoring backups (which took the most time)
i got it, dont understand why you didn't.
I have a desire from Vodaphone. It doesn't appear to be branded. I thought none of them were from vodaphone. Got the update yesterday.
How is your phone different. Is there a vodaphone insignia on the phone or proprietary software changes.
Just curious.

Oh, that's strange.
You are correct to say that none of the UK Voda Desires are branded - no markings on the phone and no splash screens or whatever. But the firmware number still seems to mark them out as Voda phones and that means they can only be updated by 'official' Voda updates, I believe.
Can anyone else shed some light on this?
No visible difference. It seems to have a vodafone 'scene' and a vodafone background. The main difference, and apparently the reason why it doesn't update is because the rom version is different to the official HTC rom. version 1.19... as opposed to 1.21 (i think).
I am going to wait a few days and then will probably go down the gold card etc route.
i went down the goldcard route, have it in when you Debrand to WWE 1.21 and LEAVE it in when you check for updates for FroYo and it works fine.
Even though on the Techradar site it stated Voda are gonna try and get it out to us as soon as possible its just not worth believing them as they are shi*e at these things.
nice
the only way you can tell if its vodafone is as someone already stated about it having the vodafone scene and i believe software version with 161.
in relation to the rooted question i dont think so..but whatever it means im happy as a pig in .... you can unroot etc regardless of how it goes
froyo is up and running though
only thing i had an issue was the sync for my contacts..but transferred my contacts from previous sync to outlook then tried sync again from outlook
besides that happy days

You just broke my heart. I'm following threads at the Vodafone forum too where people are reporting of an update...we were all assuming it was froyo (no one has completed the update yet).
It's not froyo...
I rooted my phone last night, contemplating whether to go for a modded ROM or the original.
Looks like i'll be debranding tonight and getting the 2.2 OTA that way (i will be trying custom ROMs first though)
i believe vodafone did buy a load of unbranded completly network free desires which customers have..then some have vodafone on..you can tell by the software number...and if it has the scene..but in relation to network branding at least vodafone left the splash screens etc alone..
my advice..sod vodafone..debrand..get froyo...though dont get overexcited its an anti climax..but two best things......save apps to sd..and 720p recording..oo and hotspt..but rarely using that me thinks
But seriously, I have a year-old review unit here and I don't use Sprint personally. So I can use it to play with Android distros, or as a very small tablet, or make it into a remote-control for my TV. What's the most amusement one can get from an off-the-air M8?
And is the Harmon-Kardon branding just advertising, or does it actually have better sound than other phones?

You can use it as a music player too. It's one of the best Android music phone.
Surely it would be well worth unlocking the phone, where else are you going to get such a top spec device for the small price of an unlock?
I paid a ton of money for this phone 12 months ago and it is still one of the best on the market.
@crazykas
Not s-off yet. I haven't found a method other than sunshine which is $25 and, from what I read, has a spotty reputation. A question: If I got it s-off, instead of that sim unlock (that article is in my list for the m8) should I change the CIM and (DIM?) so it thinks it's an ATT Developer phone? Would that let it use ATT?
EDIT: Now that I re-read this, the $25 isn't that much, and the worst that can happen is that I'm left with a brick that I didn't pay for! But do you know of any self S-off method?

I'm pretty happy with my current Galaxy S4, but it's great having a phone that I can load anything on to and not worry that if I brick it I'll be left without a phone or lose a couple of hundred dollars. For example, installing assorted versions of TWRP on this particular phone makes it hang permanently, power and display on, entering recovery. But it works with Clockwork Mod. Now I'm playing with CyanogenMod for the first time.

If you're using an S4, IMHO, you must upgrade to this phone. It's plenty fast (I bet miles better in performance than S4) for 2015. Only thing you'll miss is the pretty cool camera in your current phone.

Smelly feet! SunShine doesn't work with CyanogenMod; it asks for a stock rom. Fortunately, lots of stocks to choose from. Back to stock, run Sunshine, S-OFF, back to Cyanogen. Here goes...
EDIT: Well, I gave up. I've flashed four different ROMs and had startup hang at four different places. CyanogenMod works fine. Since I can't get back to stock (some idiot forgot to do a backup before flashing Cyanogen, no excuse, I've been in this business for decades) and Sunshine won't run under Cyanogen, no S-off.
If anyone can point me to a back-to-stock or a ROM that I can load with Clockwork or RUU, it would make me happy. I've got the Harmon Kardon Sprint model, which may be a problem. I've tried roms from Bad Seed, the ND8_STOCK_DEODEXED_ROOTED rom, Renovate_5.0, and cm-11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-m8 . I got so frustrated that I didn't keep page links for these, which I know I should put for reference. The only reason I want to go back to stock is that Sunshine seems to require it. I'm awfully glad that, as I've posted before, this is a don't-care device.
EDIT TWO: Anyone sick of my train-of-thought posting process can leave now. I left Renovate in its stuck mode for a while, and half an hour later it was on. Hurrah! Now to try Sunshine...
Update - it needed a recent RUU from HTC. Year-old firmware was slow with current ROMs and not compatible with TWRP at all. Recent RUU, good behavior. It's s-off, and I'll go for sim unlock tomorrow.
